Noteworthy Events of the 1972-1973 Season
1. Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes—Things stood pretty much the same as the 1971-72 season. The only team switching classification was St. Mary’s in Cheyenne, which dropped from Class A to Class B play. Saratoga opted back into a full Texas Trail Conference schedule, having played an independent slate of games, more or less, the year before. Farson-Eden again played a Class B schedule against SW teams instead of a South region Class C schedule. The Pronghorns fared well—going 4-6 against Class B teams from Sublette and Uinta counties—but couldn’t get noticed by the Class C pollsters, ignored all season long. Their revenge would occur at state tourney time where the Class C bracket would include six teams, two more than the year before. Play in the 12-team Class B bracket was slightly altered, as well, where opening-day losers would exit the tourney and quarterfinal losers would play for consolation honors.
2. Another Blizzard at State Tourney Time—Mid-March is always a risky time to schedule a statewide tournament, and for the second time in four years, the tourney was delayed by inclement weather. This particular winter storm hit the southeast corner of the state the hardest and delayed several teams’ arrivals in Laramie. Wednesday was supposed to open the 12-team Class B bracket with four games, but none were played. On Thursday, Upton defeated Big Piney, the only game contested all day in any classification. With the arrival of the final three teams—Guernsey-Sunrise, Albin and Huntley—things finally got going on Friday. The delay necessitated Sunday play as it did in 1970.
3. A Tiger Triptych—It wasn’t quite as easy as it was the previous two years, but Spiro Varras and his Rock Springs Tigers won their third consecutive state title. The Tigers started with a moribund December—finishing the month at 1-3—awaiting the return of several players who were recovering from the wear and tear of autumn’s football season. A loss in Powell in mid-January was their final loss, and the healthier Tigers reeled off 14 straight to take the school’s 12th championship banner. Competition in the East region came from Cheyenne Central, the two Casper high schools, and Laramie, which hung one of the December losses on the Tigers. Those four teams were ranked at season’s end around No. 2 Rock Springs—the Indians No. 1, Kelly Walsh No. 3, Natrona and the Plainsmen Nos. 4 and 5, depending on the poll. At state, the east won three of the four openers and the Tigers—having avenged their regular-season loss to Laramie—faced Casper Natrona while Central played Kelly Walsh. The two top-rated teams both won and on Sunday, Rock Springs defeated Cheyenne Central by three for the three-peat.

5. Buffalo Bison Bag Back-to-Back Banners—The Class A hoops title outcome was anybody’s guess as no team really stood out as the frontrunner. Best in the SE was Torrington, which was ranked No. 1 in one poll and No. 3 in the other (an indication of Class A parity). The Trailblazers won the Absaraka Conference and took the SE district championship final over No. 5 Wheatland. In the SW, Evanston and Star Valley tied for the conference top spot, but only the Braves made the grade in the final polls, ranked almost the opposite of Torrington, No. 4 and No. 1. However, Evanston atoned for the pollsters’ slight by winning the SW district tourney over Star Valley. Thermopolis was the best of the trio of Big Horn Basin schools, ranked No. 4 or No. 2, while Buffalo was top dog in the NE, polling at No. 2 or No. 3. Buffalo edged out Thermopolis of the NE/NW district final. At state, Absaraka Conference schools Buffalo and Torrington and SW schools Evanston and Star Valley all won their openers. In the semis, Buffalo easily handled Evanston and Torrington breezed by Star Valley. Wheatland came back from its first-day loss to take consolation honors, matching its place in the final polls. Star Valley avenged its SW district loss to Evanston to capture third. Buffalo took the Class A championship trophy with a narrow win over runners-up Torrington. It was the school’s second (consecutive) state hoops title.

7. Another Texas Trail champ—Ho Hum it’s Huntley—Pollsters primarily focused on two Class B schools that had long winning streaks. One was Dubois in the NW, which polished off 14 straight Ws until the Rams lost in mid-February at Cowley, finishing the regular season at 17-1. The other was Tongue River, which ran the table on the regular season, a nifty 18-0 mark. At the season’s end, both polls had Tongue ranked No. 1 and Dubois at No. 2. Texas Trail teams that were ranked included league champion Albin at No. 3, Huntley No. 4 or No. 5, and Glenrock No. 4 (UPI only). One other BHB team received some pollster affection and that was Cowley at No. 5 (AP only). District play included a couple of surprises. In SE district play, Glenrock upset Albin for the No. 1 SE seed while Huntley and Guernsey claimed the Nos. 3 and 4 spots respectively via coin flip. The NE district provided another surprise when host Moorcroft knocked Tongue River from the undefeated ranks in the championship. Dubois held to form with a win over Wind River to take the top seed from the NW district, while in the SW, Mt. View captured district bragging rights. Once state tourney play eventually began in the 12-team bracket, Texas Trail teams shined. All four of the SE teams made it to the semis, where Glenrock topped Guernsey-Sunrise and Huntley eked by Albin. Huntley was playing its best ball of the season, and its stellar run through Class B opposition included wins over the Nos. 1-, 2- and 3-ranked teams in the polls. Their final eight-point win over No. 4 Glenrock brought the Cardinals their first state championship.

9. Rattling the Class C ranks—Of the 11 Class C teams, pollsters seemed to favor slightly the teams from the North region. At season’s end both polls were in agreement: Burlington was No. 1, Snake River No. 2, Medicine Bow No. 3, Kaycee No. 4 and Manderson-Hyattville No. 5. Burlington and Kaycee had both been ranked No. 1 during the season with Manderson-Hyattville usually included within the top five. Burlington managed to win the North region regular-season title but was upset by Kaycee in the regional finale. Snake River took the South region regular-season conference title and the regional. Both region winners received byes in the new six-team Class C state tourney bracket. Burlington managed to qualify for the semis with a win over Farson-Eden. Encampment surprised Manderson in the other opener to also qualify. Semifinal winners were Snake River (over Burlington) and Encampment (over Kaycee). On the final day of play, Farson-Eden took consolation honors (take that, pollsters!), Burlington bested Kaycee for third place and Snake River took its first state championship with a win over conference rival Encampment.

14. Wild Weather—LaGrange had an interesting trip to Carbon County for games with Hanna and Saratoga. The Longhorns were delayed about five hours, trying to get to their Friday game with Hanna as blizzard conditions made travel impossible. The LaGrange pep club and sponsor spent the night in at the Medicine Bow gym and the Friday game was postponed. The team somehow made it to Saratoga on Friday to spend the night. Saturday, LaGrange played the Panthers and lost 53-34. On Sunday, prior to its return home, LaGrange stopped in Hanna to make up the postponed Friday game. This time the Longhorns played better, but still losing 70-65. The Pine Bluffs paper made no mention of the LaGrange pep clubs’ fate and whether they ever saw any hoops being played that stormy mid-January weekend.
15. Prep’s Final Fling—The 1972-73 basketball season marked the last year of play for the University Preparatory high school in Laramie. The Buckaroos won the first Wyoming state championship in 1918 under the coaching/tutelage of Milward Simpson. (Simpson is more famous as the 23rd governor of Wyoming, U.S. Senator, and father to Pete and Alan Simpson than for his coaching prowess.) University Prep only had that one state title for almost four decades. Lloyd McCullough was hired in 1955, and a year later, the Prepsters won the school’s second state hoops title. Coach McCullough continued as coach for the next 19 years through the school’s final season. During that time, University Prep was the scourge of both the Class B and Class A ranks, winning two championships in the smaller classification and two against larger schools. The most memorable UPrep team might be the 1961 state champions that finished the year 26-0. Coach McCullough was selected with the inaugural class of coaches into the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984.
16. Say Hello to Wyoming Indian—With the departure of one dynastic hoops power in University Prep, it’s only fitting to witness the birth of another, as the 1972-73 school year marked Wyoming Indian High School’s first year. The school wasn’t sanctioned by the WHSAA—those bureaucratic hoops to jump through weren’t ironed out until the 1974-75 school year—but the Chiefs scheduled a slate of games against Class C schools—Burlington, Farson-Eden, Deaver-Frannie and Medicine Bow—as well as a number of Fremont County junior varsities. Their record wasn’t stellar, 2-11, but several surnames show up that will reappear in decades/generations to come: Sage, Antelope and Moss. Things at WIHS will improve soon enough, it’s safe to say.
17. Scheduling Issues in SW Class C—With the possibility of Medicine Bow being moved to Class B play in 1973-74, Encampment joining the Class B Texas Trail, and a consideration of Rock River students being bussed to classes in Laramie, South region Class C schools were decidedly nervous about finding enough games for the following year. Add to that Farson-Eden’s insistence upon playing a SW Class B schedule the past two years and it’s easy to see what the coaches were concerned about for scheduling full slates of games. We’ll see what the 1973-74 season will bring to the smaller teams.
18. And Working O-O-O-Overtime—Kemmerer and Jackson sweated through four extra overtimes at the SW district tourney in Evanston, the longest overtime game during postseason to that date. The ballgame had plenty at stake in that the loser was eliminated. The two schools were evenly matched, having traded road losses at each school and had tied for the third, fourth and fifth placings in the SW district (with Green River). The game was tied in regulation at 57 all and at the end of three overtimes it was still tied at 62 apiece. The winning basket was scored by Kemmerer’s Steve Dover—the other four Ranger starters had fouled out—with 2 seconds left in the fourth extra period, a 67-66 Kemmerer win. Bronc coach Paul Kraft and Ranger mentor Al Bozner—close friends—shook hands after the marathon game. Kraft commented, “(Bozner) said he liked to win such marvelous games as that one, but he hated to have his good friend—me—lose one like that.”
19. Lingle Coach—Dogger coach Tom Rogers certainly kept things interesting for the Lingle fans during the season. During an early February game in Veteran—a 85-72 win over Goshen Hole—the Lingle paper reported the following: “Due to fouls Coach Rogers found himself recruiting a player from the stands to finish out the game.” A week later in Glenrock—won by the Herders 51-47—Lingle forfeited the game by walking off in the waning seconds. A Glenrock high school reporter reported it thusly, “…a game was forfeited to Glenrock with two minutes remaining in the contest. The game, a key conference battle, was forfeited…when the Lingle coach, unhappy with the refereeing, got up and walked out of the gym with his team following close behind.” Never a dull moment…
20. Illnesses—Several teams had game cancelled due to illnesses during the season as a nasty flu bug circulated through several schools. This poses a question in determining season records, should such happenings be totally ignored or should the games be counted as forfeits, particularly when the opponent is healthy? Lusk had one such weekend where it was unable to play two games due to school-wide illnesses. Buffalo was one of those opponents and doesn’t count that particular game within its record at all. University Prep was the other and does count the un-played game as victory. Midwest was another school that had the misfortune of a flu outbreak. That particular weekend, the Oilers were to play Sundance and Tongue River. Both opponents do count the games as wins and Midwest counts them as losses. So I’m making a call about Lusk’s season and adding two more losses to it, in spite of Buffalo’s largesse. The Tigers are 4-14 at season’s end and Buffalo is 20-3.
21. Appeals—Two games received plenty of ink about contested endings and appeals were filed with the WHSAA to render Solomon-like decisions. A 51-49 loss by Lander in Riverton was protested by Lander Coach Tom Massey. The dispute occurred late in the game when a Lander player tried to inbound a ball and hit a practice basket that overhung the playing floor. Officials called the pass a turnover and awarded the ball to Riverton with 2 seconds remaining in the game. The protest was disallowed by the WHSAA but did order Riverton coaches and officials to meet with schools visiting Riverton before each game to discuss court rules.
Another appeal was filed by Dubois coach John McDougall when his team lost in Cowley by a 54-51 margin, the Rams’ only regular-season loss. In the waning minutes of the game, a double foul was called. Instead of calling a jump ball, the referees allowed both teams to shoot 1-and-1 free throws. Cowley made both of its charity tosses and Dubois missed. The WHSAA said the officials would be “corrected and censured” for their call and one point would be taken away from Cowley. Final score: Cowley 53, Dubois 51.

Northeast
Of the three NE Class A teams, the year was more memorable for Douglas and Buffalo, less so for Newcastle. The Dogies only managed two Absaraka Conference wins, finishing at the bottom of the conference. Douglas was sub-.500 as well, only a game above Newcastle in the final standings. Buffalo was more successful, dropping only two conference games, both to league champ Torrington. The three teams were again partnered with the three Big Horn Basin teams for the regional: Greybull, Lovell and host Thermopolis. Buffalo was ranked No. 2 or No. 3, depending on the poll, while Thermopolis was rated No. 4 or No. 2, and both teams received an opening-round bye. In the semis, Buffalo faced Lovell while Thermopolis encountered Douglas. Both ranked teams won with double-digit victories, setting up the Bison/Bobcats championship final. Douglas secured the No. 3 seed with two Saturday eliminator wins, the first over Lovell and their second tourney encounter with Newcastle. Buffalo won the top seed with a narrow win over Thermopolis. At state, Douglas went 0-2, losing to Evanston and Wheatland. Buffalo copped its second state championship in a row, winning the opener against Wheatland, the semi versus Evanston and the finale against Torrington, avenging the two regular-season losses to the Trailblazers. It was the school’s second hoops state championship trophy.
Class B Tongue River sailed through the regular season undefeated, racking up 18 consecutive wins. The Eagles were the only school in Wyoming to post a perfect regular season, big school or small. Finishing two games in back of the Eagles was Moorcroft, while three teams—Sundance, Hulett and Upton—hovered at or near .500 play in the Powder River conference. For the district tourney in Moorcroft, the hosts, Sundance, Tongue River and Upton all qualified for the semifinals with Moorcroft facing Sundance and Upton duking it out with Tongue River. As expected, Moorcroft and Tongue River won their way into the championship tilt. Moorcroft finally defeated Tongue River in close game, winning by four and ending the Eagles’ 20-game win streak, eerily similar to Big Horn’s run at perfection in the 1970-71 season when the Rams lost to Byron in district tourney play. Upton surprised with two Saturday wins to garner the No. 3 seed and a trip to Laramie. At state, Upton won Thursday’s opener—the only game played that first day in the weather-delayed tourney—then lost two games to exit the Gem City with a 1-2 mark. Moorcroft also rang up a 1-2 state tourney record, losing close games against Guernsey-Sunrise and Dubois but eliminating Upton. As the No. 2 seed, Tongue River unfortunately drew Huntley—the eventual champion—and saw their stay in Laramie end with an 0-1 mark. Still, Tongue River’s season was stellar, ending with a 20-2 record, winning at better than a 90% clip.

In the AA East, it was the usual dogfight as five of the seven teams posted records of .500 or better. Cheyenne Central took conference bragging rights by one game over Kelly Walsh and three games over Natrona, which earned the co-host Indians a first-round bye for the regional. The biggest game of the opening round of tourney play was the Sheridan/Laramie clash. The Plainsmen had dropped home and away games to the Broncs, but the third time was the charm as No. 5-ranked Laramie posted a double-digit win. Laramie faced top-ranked Central in one semi while the two Casper schools—No. 3 and No. 4 in the polls—did likewise in the other. Central and Natrona advanced to the championship final while Laramie and Kelly Walsh qualified for state by winning Saturday morning eliminators. Central eked out a one-point W over Natrona while Kelly Walsh ended a state tourney drought, taking the No. 3 seed over Laramie. At state, three of the four qualifiers won their openers over West region squads. Laramie didn’t, playing and losing to eventual champion Rock Springs. Central won over Kelly Walsh in the semis while Natrona lost to Rock Springs. On Sunday, Laramie took consolation honors over Powell, Kelly Walsh topped Natrona for third place and Cheyenne Central lost by three to Rock Springs for second place, all in all an excellent showing by the East foursome of teams.
The two of the four Class A teams from the SE contended for Absaraka Conference bragging rights all season long with Torrington capturing the regular-season crown by a game over NE foe Buffalo and two games over a resurgent Wheatland team. The Bulldogs managed to post an early February win over the Trailblazers, which meant the two teams tied for the top SE tourney seedings with 5-1 marks. No. 5 in both polls, Wheatland—by virtue of a coin flip—was declared the top seed, although Torrington was top-ranked in the UPI poll (and No. 3 in the AP.) Wheatland topped Lusk in the opener while tourney host Torrington bested University Prep. The two teams played for the championship on Friday and the Trailblazers won easily over the Bulldogs. Wheatland qualified for state on Saturday with ease, defeating University Prep in the that school’s last-ever basketball game. In Laramie, Torrington lived up to its lofty ranking, making the finals against defending champion Buffalo, ranked No. 2 or No. 3, depending on the poll. Although the Trailblazers defeated Buffalo twice during Absaraka Conference play, they came up four points short in the championship finale. Wheatland, losers to Buffalo in the opener, came through with two subsequent wins to cop consolation honors.
The Class B Texas Trail Conference was again loaded for bear and six teams racked up double digit win totals in conference play. Albin sported the best record with a 17-1 mark, topping fellow east portion foe Huntley by three games. Glenrock won the west portion of the conference with a 14-3 mark. Those three teams were guaranteed places in the SE B tourney in Torrington. The other 10 teams had to play loser-out games with the five winners advancing to tourney play while the five losing teams saw an abrupt end to their seasons. The five winning teams were defending Class B champion Burns, Guernsey-Sunrise, Pine Bluffs, Hanna-Elk Mountain and Saratoga. The trio of top seeds did well in the quarterfinals, joining Guernsey-Sunrise for the semis. Albin played Guernsey-Sunrise while Glenrock and Huntley squared off. Albin and Glenrock made the championship finals with easy wins. Glenrock took the championship with a seven-point win over Albin. Huntley and Guernsey-Sunrise also made state with Saturday morning eliminator wins. A coin flip gave Huntley the No. 3 SE seed and Guernsey-Sunrise the No. 4 SE seed. Pollsters were reluctant to rank any Texas Trail team ahead of undefeated Tongue River or almost-as-successful Dubois. At state tourney time, Albin was ranked No. 3 in both polls, Huntley Nos. 4 or 5, and Glenrock at No. 5 in one, unranked in the other. The four teams did well in Laramie in spite of their area being hit the hardest by a springtime blizzard, delaying their arrival in Laramie; in fact, all four teams made the semifinals with Glenrock facing Guernsey-Sunrise while Huntley battled Albin. The Herders handily defeated the Vikings while giant killer Huntley—the Cardinals had dispatched No. 1 Tongue River in the opener and No. 2 Dubois in the quarterfinal—toppled No. 3 Albin in a two-point pants wetter, 48-46. Albin rebounded on Sunday, easily taking Guernsey-Sunrise for third place. Huntley posted the school’s first state title with a seven-point victory over Glenrock.
Class C Chugwater is documented within the SW Wyoming data as the Buffaloes played mostly games against SW opponents.

The Class AA Big Horn Basin teams finally hung a loss on Rock Springs during the regular season, something that they hadn’t done since the Tigers joined the conference during the 1970-71 season. That Tiger conference win streak reached 34 games until a trip to Powell in mid-January finally signaled defeat for the Sweetwater County team, a nine-point loss to the Panthers. Fremont County teams Riverton and Lander had close losses to the Tigers as well during the season, so many thought the regional tourney in Rock Springs might somehow be different. As was the norm for BHB tourney play, an upset occurred in round one when Worland bested Lander. For the semis, the hosts faced Worland while Riverton and Powell squared off. Powell easily handled Riverton, and Rock Springs did likewise. Riverton and Rawlins took Saturday morning eliminators to qualify for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, the Wolverines easily taking third. Rock Springs breezed by Powell in the regional championship, avenging their only BHB loss in spades. At state, Rawlins’ and Riverton’s stays were the shortest, as both teams dropped their opener and consolation semifinal games. Powell remained all four days, dropping its opener, winning over Rawlins, and then losing to Laramie in the consolation championship. Rock Springs, ranked No. 2 in both polls, accomplished the three-peat, the Tigers’ third straight championship and the school’s 12th hoops title. The team won their games by six, five and three points against three east region teams.
Thermopolis had the best season of the NW Class A teams, sweeping regular season games from Lovell and Greybull. The Bobcats were ranked No. 2 in one poll at the regular season’s end, No. 4 in the other. The three Big Horn Basin teams were again lumped with the three NE teams when it came to tourney time. Thermopolis was also the host school for the NE/NW district tourney. Buffalo and Thermopolis earned first-round byes and then defeated Lovell and Douglas in the semis, setting up a finale of the two top seeds. The No. 3 (or No. 2) Thundering Herd outlasted the hosts by four points to take the district championship. Greybull was eliminated in a Saturday morning eliminator as was Lovell, so the sole BHB representative at the Class A tourney was Thermopolis. Two losses to SW Class A schools ended the Bobcats’ stay in the Gem City.
Dubois took regular-season honors for BHB Class B play by three games over Cowley, racking up an impressive 17-1 mark. The Rams were top-ranked much of the season but ended up at No. 2 behind undefeated Tongue River in the final polls. Three teams—Wind River, Byron and Shoshoni—all hovered at or around .500 and battled for the No. 3 seed from the NW come tourney time. The district tourney was in Basin, and first-round winners Wind River, Cowley and Shoshoni joined bye recipient Dubois in the semis. Dubois won by four over Shoshoni while Wind River eked out a two-point win over Cowley. Cowley dispatched Byron and Shoshoni in Saturday morning eliminators to bag the No. 3 seed. Dubois easily bested Wind River for the district championship. However, Cowley and Wind River both lost their initial games at the state tourney and because the consolation bracket only included quarterfinal losers, their stay in Albany County was over. Enjoying an opening-round bye, Dubois lost its quarterfinal game to eventual champion Huntley but then bounced back with two wins to take the consolation trophy.
The five teams of the Class C North region were the “haves”—Burlington, Kaycee and Manderson-Hyattville—and the “have-nots”—Deaver-Frannie and Ten Sleep. Burlington finished atop the conference with a 7-1 mark, one game ahead of Kaycee and two in front of M-H. Both polls voted the Huskies to the top spot at the regular season’s end while the Buckaroos and Demons were ranked Nos. 4 and 5. The regional was in Worland, where M-H faced Kaycee in the semis while Burlington played Ten Sleep. The winners were Burlington in a romp and Kaycee in a close one. Manderson-Hyattville took the No. 3 seed, eliminating Deaver and Ten Sleep in consolation play. Kaycee surprised Burlington in a tight game for the regional championship, winning by four. At state, Manderson-Hyattville lost to Encampment and Farson-Eden to exit the tourney at 0-2. Burlington won its opener but lost in the semis to eventual champ Snake River. The Huskies rebounded with a win over Kaycee to bag the third-place trophy. Kaycee received a bye for the opening round in the six-team bracket, then lost to Encampment in the semis and then to conference foe Burlington.

Rat Droppings***Rock Springs’ loss in Utah to Ogden had the Tigers scoring only 21 points in a slow-down sort of game. The Rat’s not totally sure, but he’s almost convinced that their total is the lowest amount of points scored in a loss by an eventual state champion—post-WWII era—although he needs to triple-check a number of dusty files to be sure. Coach Varras was the reason for the stall as he felt his Tigers couldn’t run with Ogden in the previous night’s loss.

Evanston and Star Valley battled it out for supremacy in the Class A SW with the two teams exchanging road losses during the regular season. Star Valley received kudos from the pollsters, ranking No. 1 in one poll, No. 4 in the other. Oddly, Evanston was ignored by both polls at season’s end. Green River, Kemmerer and Jackson saw little success within conference play and ended up in a three-way tie for third place. Since the SW was sending three teams to the state tourney, the biggest question surrounding SW district play in Evanston was which of the bottom three teams would join top two teams in Laramie. Evanston received the bye for first round and faced Green River in the semis along with the Kemmerer/Star Valley pairing. Not surprisingly, the top two favorites won, setting up a Red Devils/Braves final, which was won by the hosts. The fight for the No. 3 seed was classic, with Kemmerer needing four overtimes to eliminate Jackson and then dropping the deciding game to Green River. At state, all three teams represented the SW well. Green River lost its opener, then surprised Thermopolis to make the consolation finals, where the Wolves lost by 10 to Wheatland. Star Valley and Evanston both won their openers, then lost in the semis. The two teams met for the fourth time of the season in the third-place game, where Star Valley avenged its district tourney loss.
The five Class B teams of the SW staged a typical season, where the top teams could defeat each other and the also-rans could not be discounted on any weekend. Cokeville captured conference regular-season honors by a game over Lyman and Mt. View. Class C Farson-Eden competed within the conference, facing four of the five teams, and managed four wins against the bigger schools. At the tourney in Evanston, Cokeville received the bye and faced Big Piney in the semis while county foes Lyman and Mt. View did likewise. Cokeville and Mt. View both won to set up the championship finale, which the Buffalos won. Moved to elimination play, Cokeville lost to Big Piney, which had eliminated Lyman earlier in the day. The red-hot Punchers had punched their ticket to Laramie. Big Piney lost its opener to Upton and because the 12-team bracket had no consolation play for first-round losers, its stay was shortened to that loss to the Bobcats. After earning a first-round bye, Mt. View lost to No. 3 Albin, then dropped its next game in consolation play, exiting Albany County with an 0-2 mark.
The six Class C teams in the South region were tough for the pollsters to decipher during the season. For one, the aforementioned Farson-Eden eschewed playing a Class C regular-season slate of games for the second year in a row, so there was no data about how the Pronghorns would fare against similar-sized schools. Snake River tore through the regular season undefeated against the other four teams, two games ahead of Medicine Bow. Pollsters had the Rattlers at No. 2 and the Wranglers at No. 3 come regional tourney time in Rawlins. Snake River and Medicine Bow both benefitted from first-round byes and met Farson and Encampment, respectively, in the semifinals. Snake River breezed by the Pronghorns while Medicine Bow was upset by Encampment, setting up a Rattlers/Tigers battle for the regional championship. Farson-Eden bounced Medicine Bow from the tourney, then defeated Chugwater for the No. 3 South seed. Snake River easily handled Encampment for the No. 1 seed. In Laramie, Snake River received a bye in the six-team bracket. Unranked Encampment bested No. 5 ranked Manderson-Hyattville in the opener, No. 3 Kaycee in the semis and fell to No. 2 Snake River for the season’s fourth time in the championship. Snake River took the school’s first state hoops title with a semifinal win over Burlington and the finals win over the Tigers.
