Noteworthy Events of the 1966-1967 Season
1. Central adds another championship—Class AA was expanded to two eight-team regions at the expense of the Class A teams of the Big Horn Basin. The southern region was again composed of the two Cheyenne schools, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs and Casper Natrona. Riverton and Lander were sent south to replace Torrington—moved to Class A—and fill out the eight-team bracket. Up north, Lovell, Greybull and Thermopolis were designated as new Class AA teams, joining Cody, Powell, Worland, Casper Kelly Walsh and Sheridan. (The remaining BHB Class A team from the previous year, Basin, was moved to the Class B ranks.) Defending state champion Powell took regular-season honors by a game over Cody in the northern region while Rock Springs took southern region bragging rights, topping Cheyenne Central by one. Things shook out similarly at tourney time. Powell captured the northern regional in Sheridan besting Lovell in the finals. Rock Springs brought home the bacon in the south, edging Central by four. Two weekends later in Laramie, Central and Sheridan were surprise finalists, as the Indians handled Powell in the semis, whilst Sheridan had upset Rock Springs in Thursday’s opener. Central captured the championship trophy with a 49-42 win over Sheridan, Coach Jim Storey’s fourth and final one.

3. UPrep’s final tourney title—With the Big Horn Basin teams playing Class AA ball, the 14 remaining Class A teams saw a shift in power to the Absaraka Conference, which would claim state championships in five of the next seven years. University Prep swept SE district and Absaraka Conference bragging rights, losing only one game. The best team in the NE district was Campbell County. The defending champion Camels were perfect against NE district teams but lost twice to the Prepsters during the regular season. Gillette hosted the NE district tourney and easily won games over Newcastle and Douglas (twice) for the No. 1 NE seed. Prep hosted as well in the SE district, but was upset by Lusk in the opener. Luckily, with the BHB teams reclassified, the SE sent three to the state tourney and University Prep won two eliminator games for the No. 3 seed. Lusk and Torrington took the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively. Parity reigned in the SW district as host Kemmerer surprised the regular-season favorites, first second-seed Star Valley and then regular-season champs Green River in the district finale. At state, only Kemmerer managed an opening-round win versus Absaraka Conference competition. The semis featured the Rangers versus Douglas while Campbell County faced University Prep. Douglas dispatched Kemmerer by double digits while Prep topped the Camels by seven. The Douglas/UPrep final was a laugher, at 68-37 win for the Buckaroos, also Coach Lloyd McCullough’s fourth and final championship.

5. Shoshoni takes it all in a revamped Class B—Two major changes were installed for Class B. First, the state tourney bracket was again 16 teams, eight more than the 1965-66 state tourney. Second, the NW was also divided into two districts with each district sending three teams. The NE and SW districts also sent three teams apiece. The SE district, with the largest remaining group of Class B teams, sent four teams to complete the bigger state tourney bracket. Best in the NE? Moorcroft, with the regular season and NE district championships. How about the SE? Glenrock, which matched Moorcroft’s feat. In the SW? Mt. View, regular season and district champs. Big Horn Basin North? Class B newcomer Basin, both regular season and district champs. Big Horn Basin South? Shoshoni, accomplishing the same as the other four schools. At the state tourney in Laramie, the first of the five district winners to stumble was Basin. The Bobcats dropped their opener to defending champion Albin while the other four teams won. On Thursday, Moorcroft and Mt. View were next to exit the championship, the Wolves losing to Glenrock while the Buffalos lost to Shoshoni. In Friday’s semis, Glenrock lost in overtime to fellow Texas Trail rival Guernsey. Shoshoni bested BHB’s Burlington in the other. On the final day, Shoshoni easily handled Guernsey in the championship, winning 61-46. It was the Wranglers’ sixth state title, putting the school one ahead of Cowley and LaGrange for small school supremacy at the time.

7. New school Goshen Hole dominates Class C—The Goshen Hole Spartans made a most impressive debut as a new consolidated high school, running the table on the entire season, posting a 23-0 mark. Most stellar was their domination of the opposition, as only two teams managed to get within 20 points of them, an 18-point win over Cheyenne Central’s JV and a 13-point victory versus Ten Sleep in the Class C state tourney semis. Racehorse hoops was the standard as the Spartans rang up 100+ points six times—including 134 points versus a Nebraska school— and scored 90 points or above four other times. Conference rival Carpenter had some luck against Goshen Hole as the school managed to draw slots on the opposite side of the bracket during district and state tourney play, which enabled the Coyotes to finish second in both events. Ten Sleep managed to defeat Medicine Bow for third place while Burns copped consolation honors. The 1966-67 edition of the Goshen Hole Spartans makes the short list of best small school quintets to ever grace the hardwood in Wyoming prep hoops history, certainly at or near the top of the list.

12. Goshen Hole tragedy—A grueling train-car crash at the Main Street crossing in Lingle took the lives of two brothers, Terry and Larry Teeters. On their way home from the district track meet to change clothes to attend their end-of-the-year athletic banquet, the boys were hit by an oncoming Chicago, Burlington and Quincy train. Both boys died at the accident. Terry was to have graduated four days later and had just qualified for the state track meet in the throwing events. Larry was a junior, an AP all-state basketball player like his older brother.
13. Discipline Costs Laramie—It was a disappointing finish to the Laramie season as head coach Bob Cook had to discipline several players prior to the district tourney. Playing without some of his starters, the Plainsmen gave Casper Natrona and host team Rawlins a run for their money but lost both games to be eliminated on Friday of the three-day tourney. It was a bittersweet end for Laramie as the Plainsmen were ranked at No. 4 or 5 depending on the poll prior to district play. Coach Cook stepped down at season’s end to become commissioner of the WHSAA.
14. Clearmont’s Iron Five—Clearmont coach Herbert Arndt called his team the “Iron Five” before even playing their first game as he only started the season with five players. Luckily, as the season progressed, he found two more players to add to the roster. The Panthers finished the season with a 1-12 mark, winning over a JV team from Big Horn.

Northeast
Of the three NE Class AA teams, Casper Kelly Walsh had the best regular season, finishing in the middle of the north region standings. Sheridan was a notch behind them. In the south region, Casper Natrona tied with Rawlins and Cheyenne East with only two regular-season wins. Both Casper teams were eliminated in regional tourney play winning their openers, losing in the semis and dropping Saturday-morning eliminator games. Sheridan surprised somewhat, maybe benefitting as the host team in the north regional. The Broncs lost their opener but then stormed back with two strong wins to qualify for the No. 3 or 4 seed. It turned out to be the No. 4 seed, as they dropped their final regional game to Cody. In Laramie, Sheridan excelled, ousting No. 1 south seed Rock Springs by two points. The Broncs won their semifinal game and then squared off against Cheyenne Central in the championship finale. Sheridan lost by seven and took home the runners-up trophy.
For the four Class A teams, Campbell County had the strongest season, finishing with a perfect mark against the other three and in second place within the Absaraka Conference. Buffalo and Douglas finished the regular season tied for second. Newcastle’s year was forgettable, with only one victory versus Class A competition. Things played out similarly at the NE district tourney in Gillette as the hosts defeated Newcastle and Douglas two times for the No. 1 NE seed. The Bearcats easily defeated Buffalo in the opener but couldn’t solve the Camels for the third and fourth straight times that season. At state, both Gillette and Douglas won their openers. In the semis Douglas won over Kemmerer while Gillette lost to University Prep. Gillette played Kemmerer for third place and lost by a single point. Douglas was no match for the Prepsters in the state championship contest and the Bearcats’ wait for their first state hoops banner was extended.
The seven NE Class B teams staged quite the regular season, with five of them—Midwest, Moorcroft, Sundance, Tongue River and Upton—separated by only two games in the standings at the end of regular-season play. Moorcroft was atop the standings, with Tongue River and Upton a game behind the Wolves but a game ahead of Sundance and Midwest. The NE district semifinals in Gillette had Moorcroft facing outlier Hulett (which had shocked Midwest the day before) in one game and Upton paired against Tongue River. Winners of the semis were Moorcroft and Upton, and the Wolves took the No. 1 seed the following day. Midwest recovered from the opening loss and stormed back through consolation play to cop the No. 3 seed, ousting Big Horn, Tongue River and Sundance along the way. At state, both Moorcroft and Upton lasted two days, winning their openers and dropping the quarterfinal games, exiting Laramie with 1-1 marks. No. 3 seed Midwest lasted all four days, dropping its opener but winning two consolation games to qualify for the consolation championship. Byron proved too strong, however and the Oilers left town with a 2-2 mark.
Class C Arvada breezed through the regular season, posting a perfect mark against Clearmont and Kaycee. Clearmont was just lucky enough to field a team for the entire season as the Panthers fought number problems, fielding only seven players for the season. Kaycee finished second with two losses to Arvada and two wins over Clearmont. With Ten Sleep again added into the NE/NW regional in Gillette, the Pioneers stormed into the finals with wins over Kaycee and Arvada. Kaycee and Arvada met in an eliminator and Kaycee surprised Arvada with an easy win and had to face Ten Sleep one more time for the No. 1 seed. The Pioneers won again, topping the Buckaroos by double digits. At state, both teams lasted all three days. Ten Sleep ended up with the third-place trophy after playing Goshen Hole to within 13 points in the semis (the closest any team got to the Spartans all season long.) Kaycee lost its opener but won on Friday and squared off with Burns for the consolation trophy. The Buckaroos came up short by six and exited the Gem City with a 1-2 record.

Rat Droppings***I’ve a regular season listed of 19 games, which was illegal at the time by WHSAA rules. The maximum regular season could be 18 games. 1966-1967 SE District
The close of the 1966-67 season marked another Class AA state championship for the Cheyenne Central Indians, Coach Jim Storey’s fourth and final one. It was a bit of a surprise, given that Central was 0-3 against Rock Springs through regular season and regional play, finishing second to the Tigers in both categories. Laramie was a notch below the top two teams, but figured to qualify for state nonetheless. The Plainsmen’s chances were torpedoed for disciplinary reasons as four starters were kicked off the team just days before the regional. Cheyenne East stepped into the void—as did Lander—with a Saturday-morning win and then copping the third seed from Lander in the regional nightcap. At state, East was there all three days, winning its opener and losing the next two. Central, maybe benefitting from Rock Springs’ opening-round loss to Sheridan, defeated two Big Horn Basin teams to qualify for the finals. Their semifinal win was an impressive one over top-ranked, defending champion Powell. Central defeated Sheridan for its 14th state hoops championship on the tourney’s final day.
In the Class A ranks, it was considered anybody’s tourney to take, both at the three districts and state tourneys. The Big Horn Basin teams had been removed from the Class A picture entirely, with Greybull, Lovell and Thermopolis being added to the Class AA ranks and Basin being dropped to Class B. University Prep finished atop the SE district standings but was upset in the SE district opener by a young Lusk team. Prep came back with two wins to take the No. 3 seed while Lusk took the district championship from Torrington. The Trailblazers underachieved during the regular season with only three wins, but upset St. Mary’s and Wheatland to make the district finals. At state, district champ Lusk was the first to exit on Friday, losing to Douglas and Torrington. By virtue of their win over Lusk, Torrington played Green River for consolation honors on Saturday, losing by only two points. Prep caught fire and took the Class A championship, toppling Absaraka Conference foes Gillette and Douglas in the semis and finals. It was University Prep’s fourth state championship, Coach Lloyd McCullough’s fourth and final one, as well.
With an expanded Class B bracket set at 16 teams, four Texas Trail teams qualified for the Big Dance in Laramie. Two-time defending state champion Albin was considered as a team to take it all as the Wildcats finished second by a game to Glenrock during the regular season. Guernsey-Sunrise had received plenty of love from pollsters during the regular season, as well. At tourney time, Albin sat No. 3, Glenrock No. 5, and Guernsey No. 7 in one B/C poll. Two of the three made it to the semifinals in Torrington as Albin faced Lingle and Glenrock took on Glendo. Both ranked teams won to set up an Albin/Glenrock district finale that Glenrock easily won. Guernsey-Sunrise took a more circuitous path to state, losing its district opener, then winning over Lingle and Pine Bluffs to take the No. 3 seed. Bluffs was the No. 4 seed. At state, a Texas Trail team did make the finals. It was Guernsey-Sunrise, which lost to Shoshoni in the grand finale. Pine Bluffs was two losses and done, as was Albin, although the Wildcats managed to win their opener before exiting on Thursday with a loss to Guernsey-Sunrise. Glenrock was able to stay all four days, winning into the semis before losing to Guernsey-Sunrise. In Saturday’s third-place game, the Herders dropped a close game, losing by four to Burlington.
With the closing of Hawk Springs, Veteran and Yoder high schools and the creation of the Goshen Hole high school, the brand-new Spartans romped through the regular season, district play and the state tourney to post a 23-0 mark. No team managed to lose to them by single digits as their closest game was at state tourney, a 13-point win over Ten Sleep. Historically, the Goshen Hole crew has to rank among the top ten teams ever assembled over the 100-plus years of Wyoming Prep hoops. But which team took second? you might ask. That team came from the SE district, as well. In regular season play, Burns—defending state champs—finished second to Goshen Hole. Carpenter finished third as only the top three teams could post a mark over .500. At district play in Torrington, Goshen Hole faced Ft. Laramie, while Burns and Carpenter were lucky enough to be away from Goshen Hole in the tourney bracket. Of course, the Spartans won, as did the Coyotes. Burns, relegated to Saturday morning eliminators, won two to take the No. 3 seed, bestowing a No. 4 seed to Chugwater. At state, Chugwater faced Goshen Hole in the opener then exited on Friday with a loss to Burns. Burns qualified for the consolation championship, besting Kaycee to finish with a 2-1 mark in Laramie. Carpenter took two pants-wetter games from SW teams Rock River (by four) and Medicine Bow (by one). Carpenter then finished the season losing to Goshen Hole and claiming the runners-up trophy.

Northwest
As befitting the defending AA champions, Powell was ranked at or near the top of the polls all season long, and the Panthers finished at No. 1 heading into the postseason. Park County nemesis Cody was the only team to hang a loss on Powell; in fact, the Broncs solved them twice during the regular season both home and away. With host Sheridan and Casper Kelly Walsh added to the north regional in Sheridan—less the two Fremont County Big Horn Basin teams Lander and Riverton—Powell cruised through the tourney, winning two laughers and edging Lovell in the finale by seven. Cody took the third seed with a win over Sheridan. At state, Cody dropped its opener to eventual champion Cheyenne Central (as did Lovell) but proceeded to take consolation honors with two wins, the final one a measure of revenge against Lovell, which had defeated the Broncs in regional play. Powell faced Cheyenne Central in the semis and suffered a nine-point loss to the championship-bound Indians. The Panthers bounced back to cop third-place honors, besting Cheyenne East easily. Lander, banished to the south region along with Riverton, did remarkably well against teams that were missing from their regular-season schedule. The Tigers managed to exit Rawlins with the No. 4 seed, defeating Riverton and Rawlins while losing to Rock Springs and Cheyenne East. Riverton was done in Rawlins after Friday, dropping its second game to Cheyenne East. At state, Lander drew top-ranked Powell in the opener—which the Tigers lost—then faced Big Horn Basin runners-up Cody. Lander lost that game as well, exiting the Gem City with an 0-2 mark.
It was a revamped Class B as six Big Horn Basin teams made the trip to Laramie: three from the north and three from the south. The state tourney bracket was expanded again to 16 teams to accommodate the state’s most crowded classification. In the north, Class B newcomer Basin and Burlington staged a furious regular-season battle with the Bobcats finishing atop the league, one game ahead of the Huskies. Shoshoni in the south had an easier time of it, finishing the regular season undefeated in conference pairings. Morton was second, a game ahead of Pavillion. District play in Byron shook out similar to the regular season with Basin winning over Burlington for the title and the hosts copping the third seed over Cowley. Ditto the south district in Morton, where Shoshoni clinched the title over the hosts and Pavillion defeated Meeteetse for the third spot. At state, the Big Horn Basin shined, taking three of the four trophies. Byron lost its opener but won the next three to exit Albany County with consolation honors. Burlington made it to the semifinals but lost a close one to Shoshoni. The Huskies atoned for the loss on Saturday winning third place. Basin left Laramie on Friday, eliminated by Byron. Morton and Pavillion were done by late Thursday, dropping two in a row. Shoshoni, however, took the title with four wins, three by double digits, the Wranglers’ sixth state championship.
Class C outlier Ten Sleep finished fourth in regular-season play against the Class B competition from the Big Horn Basin schools. Again, the Pioneers played in the NE/NW regional in Gillette and the NE schools were no match. Ten Sleep easily defeated Kaycee in the opener, Arvada in the semis and Kaycee again in the finals to lay claim to the No. 1 NE/NW seed. At state, Ten Sleep had the bad luck to face powerhouse Goshen Hole in the semis and lost by 13. Those 13 points seem like a lot, but it was the closest any team got to the Spartans all season long. On Saturday, Ten Sleep earned the third-place trophy with a five-point win over Medicine Bow.

Southwest
Of the two SW Class AA teams, Rock Springs had the better season over Rawlins. The Tigers finished first in the southern region, defeated the eventual champion Cheyenne Central three times during the season and copped first place in the regional championship as well. No doubt their tepid two and done showing at the state tourney in Laramie was a huge disappointment as No. 4 seed Sheridan upset Rock Springs in the opener and Lovell sent them packing on Friday. Still, it was a better season than SW partner Rawlins, which finished tied for last in the region and as hosts, ousted in a Saturday morning eliminator for state tourney consideration by Lander, a Big Horn Basin outlier/addition to the regional.
Class A Green River breezed through the season with only one conference loss and entered district play in Kemmerer unranked and unappreciated among the pollsters. Apparently, home cooking was the perfect tonic for the hosts as the Rangers upset Star Valley in the semis and then did the same to the favored Wolves in the championship. Star Valley bounced back to eliminate Evanston and Jackson to nab the No. 3 seed. At state, Star Valley was two and done, losing to Green River in the semis of consolation play. Green River took consolation honors on Saturday with a two-point win over Torrington. Red-hot Kemmerer fared best in Laramie, winning its opener, losing to Douglas on Friday and besting Campbell County on Saturday to grab third-place honors.
With the exodus of Hanna and Saratoga to the Texas Trail Conference, only five teams battled in Class B SW district play in Kemmerer, but three proceeded to the state tourney since the bracket there involved 16 teams. Mt. View was undefeated during conference play but had a tough time capturing first place at district. Longtime nemesis/rival Lyman played the Buffalos to one point in the semis and Pinedale hung close, losing by just five points in the final. Lyman avenged two regular-season losses to Big Piney in the fight for the No. 3 seed, topping the Punchers by three. At state, only Lyman lasted three days (of four) as Pinedale was zero for two while Mt. View went 1-1, losing on the second day. The Eagles dropped their opener to eventual state champ Shoshoni, defeated Pine Bluffs on Thursday and lost a close one to Midwest on Friday.
Medicine Bow had an undefeated season in conference play, finishing well ahead of runners-up Rock River and Encampment. The Wranglers were also hosts of the district tourney and took the top seed with easy wins over Farson and Rock River. Rock River then ousted Encampment for the No. 2 seed and the short bus trip to Laramie for state. Rock River dropped its opener to Carpenter and exited tourney play the next day with a loss to Kaycee. Medicine Bow won its Thursday game and just missed making the finals as the Wranglers lost by one point to Carpenter. On Saturday, Medicine Bow lost to Ten Sleep in the fight for the third-place trophy.
