Noteworthy Events of the 1965-1966 Season
1. Powell reigns supreme in Class AA—Big Horn Basin teams stepped up during the 1965-66 hoops season and staged an all-BHB final for all the marbles. Cheyenne Central was the darling of the pollsters by the end of the regular season, dropping two games to Colorado teams in December and skating through its South region schedule undefeated. No. 2 Powell lost only one regular-season game in Worland, but finished atop the north region by two games over runner-up Sheridan. In South regional play, Central was upset by Casper Natrona in the championship, a double-overtime classic. Powell breezed through the North region, easily capturing the No. 1 seed. This meant a potential semifinal meeting between the top two teams as they were in the same portion of the state tourney bracket. That’s just what happened, as both schools won their openers on Thursday. That Friday match-up was close as expected, with Powell winning by two over Central. The finale matched the Panthers against Worland and the Warriors fell short by only three points. It was Powell’s first state basketball championship.
2. Class AA all-state tourney selections—
Cheyenne Central—Percy Johnson; Dwight James
Cody—Ron Meeker
Casper Natrona—John Whiston
Powell—Dave Jackson; Dennis Havig; Barry Iverson
Rock Springs—Ernie Dunn
Worland—Glenn Patterson; Mickey Beaver
3. Campbell County takes Class A bragging rights—Much like Campbell County’s under-the-radar run to its first state championship during the 1957-58 season, the Camels’ successful 1965-66 season surprised many throughout the state. Defending champion Green River sat in the catbird seat, according to UPI and Associated Press polls, followed by Lovell. Gillette did appear on the polls—something that hadn’t happened at all for the Camels’ previous championship—rated at No. 8 or No. 9 above Absaraka Conference foes St. Mary’s or Douglas. Green River, Lovell, University Prep and Campbell County all won their respective district tourneys. All four teams won their state tourney openers in Laramie against No. 2 seeds, setting up Lovell/Campbell County and Green River/UPrep semifinals. The pollsters were proven incorrect as the Camels won by double digits over the No. 2 Bulldogs and the Buckaroos toppled the No. 1 Wolves in overtime. On Saturday, Campbell County bested University Prep by five for its second state hoops championship.

Campbell County—Toby Johnson; Ev Desmarteau
Douglas—Tim Stark
Evanston—Russell Cox
Green River—Stan Dodds
Lovell—Don Black; Ralph Winland
St. Mary’s—Mike McDill
University Prep—Larry Larsen; Duane Diehl
5. Albin makes it two in a row—The WHSAA pared down the Class B bracket to eight—from 16 the year before (it’ll be back to 16 the next season)—but it made little difference to the Albin Wildcats. However, No. 1-ranked Albin certainly had no easy path to repeat. No. 2 Guernsey-Sunrise tied for regular-season bragging rights with Albin, each taking home-court wins over the other. Moorcroft took the Powder River Conference top spot by a game over Midwest. Dubois (south) and Byron (north) were the cream of the Big Horn Basin while Mt. View reigned by two games over Lyman in the SW. District tourney time provided a number of upsets. In the NE, Moorcroft was the No. 1 seed while Upton surprised Midwest for the No. 2 spot. Both Dubois and Byron were ousted in NW district play, replaced by No. 1 seed Pavillion and No. 2 Cowley. Mt. View did take the SW district title, but Big Piney surprised Lyman for the No. 2 seed. The biggest shock of all was Huntley’s upset of Guernsey-Sunrise in SE district play. Albin finished with the No. 1 seed while Huntley visited Laramie as the No. 2 seed. Albin stormed through the state tourney bracket, winning three straight for the repeat championship, the closest being a five-point margin over Big Piney in the semis.

Albin—Mike Brown; Terry Anderson
Big Piney—Cary Hays
Cowley—Keith Lewis
Huntley—Dennis Schliske
Moorcroft—Harvey Donner
Mt. View—Brad Jacobsen; Ron Micheli
Pavillion—John Smith

7. Burns captures Class C trophy—The Burns Broncs had a decent regular season, finishing third at 12-4 compared to league champions LaGrange and Veteran’s records of 15-1. The SE district tourney in Torrington pretty much played out that same way as LaGrange and Veteran battled for the district championship while Burns and Chugwater vied for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. Ten Sleep was the best of the NW/NE teams while Snake River was tops in the SW. At the conclusion of SE district play, Veteran was the No. 1 seed (ranked No. 3 in the B/C polls, highest of all Class C teams) LaGrange was No. 2, Burns No. 3 and Chugwater No. 4. Medicine Bow surprised Snake River for the No. 1 spot in the SW while Ten Sleep (No. 6 in the B/C polls) stood as the No. 1 seed from the NE/NW and Arvada at No. 2. On Thursday of the state tourney, Ten Sleep defeated Chugwater while the other three SE district teams all won: Veteran, Burns and LaGrange. In the semis, LaGrange edged Ten Sleep in overtime and it took overtime as well for Burns to top Veteran, both games being decided by a point. The Broncs won out over Longhorns for their first state tourney title on Saturday.

12. Wyoming Department of Education versus small schools—Actually, most of the turmoil took place during the spring and summer of 1965 when the Wyoming State Department of Education performed reviews of several small Goshen County high schools. The reviews came about as the small schools complained about the Huntley school district sending school buses into the Hawk Springs and Yoder school districts to take kids to the Huntley school. The review turned out bad for the small Class C schools as five were not accredited: Veteran, Hawk Springs, Yoder, Ft. Laramie and LaGrange. This led to several changes, including the formation of Goshen Hole High School starting in the 1966-67 school year and Ft. Laramie joining with the Lingle schools at a later date. Class C, in particular, was eventually altered quite a bit because of this, but not during the course of the 1965-66 season.
13. Whistle Concert—On a December day in Laramie, the Worland Warriors and Laramie Plainsmen played a tight one-point game with the hosts holding onto a 72-71 lead at the final buzzer. A total of 61 fouls were called, and Boomerang sports writer Jim Joslyn wrote an article hinting at the referees’ uber-enthusiasm entitled “Laramie Wins Whistle Concert.” Laramie lost five players, three of them starters, with the 37 fouls called on the Plainsmen. Worland was whistled 24 times and lost one man by fouls. Worland shot 31 of 56 from the charity stripe while Laramie managed 16 of 35 attempts.
14. Tragedy strikes Thermopolis—The week of NW district tourney play was a subdued affair due to the death of Thermopolis star player Doug Livingston in a car accident south of Cody. The accident in which three young people perished was on a Monday, essentially kids ditching school. Livingston was the driver of the car and was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled, as were three other occupants. Playing with heavy hearts sans their top scorer, Thermopolis still managed to take the No. 2 seed at the NW district tourney that weekend, qualifying for state. Doug Livingston was named to the first team of the Associated Press Class A all-state team, a posthumous honor for the late Bobcat junior.
15. Lynda Bird takes in a game—President Lyndon Johnson’s daughter Lynda took in an Evanston Red Devils basketball game during a winter ski vacation to southwest Wyoming/Utah ski country. The 21-year-old eldest daughter of the 36th president of the United States stayed with the Arnold Eastman family in Evanston. She had met Brent Eastman during the summer when he had been employed as a Park Service guide in Jackson. He and his family had invited Lynda to Evanston for a few days of skiing and recreation. Eastman’s brother Dale was a starter for the Red Devils and Miss Johnson and her traveling party took in the late December game between Lander and Evanston. Possibly Lynda’s attendance spurred on the Red Devils as Evanston won 64-60, improving their season record to 1-6.
16. Hanna and Saratoga end their SW district play—Both Hanna and Saratoga announced that beginning in the 1966-67 season, the Miners and the Panthers would compete in the Texas Trail Conference, aligning the two teams with SE district competition.
17. McPherren scoring records—Big Ed McPherren’s presence in Class C basketball was quite apparent as the Ten Sleep senior put up scoring marks that exist to this very day, a state-record 68 points versus Clearmont. He put up 53 in district tourney play, and equaled or topped 40 points three other times. His season mark for points (800) as well as his career scoring mark (2,041) stood for almost a quarter century, all accomplished without the benefit of the 3-point field goal.
Sheridan sportswriter Walt Harris attended the Ten Sleep/Clearmont blowout—final score 122-38—and was somewhat critical of Joe Daniel, the Ten Sleep coach, who left his starters in for all but the final seconds of the game. The 6-foot, 6-inch McPherren sat for only the final 20 seconds of the game. Harris wrote about the undermanned hosts, “The Panthers who are small (no player over 5-10) and inexperienced were no match for the taller and veteran Pioneers. Despite the fact that they held a commanding 62-10 lead at intermission the Pioneers regulars played most of the final half.” McPherren finished with 27 field goals and 12 free throws. [Maybe a bigger accomplishment was the 20 points scored by the Panthers’ Mike Sanders, a hen’s tooth rarity to have a 20-point scorer when the team scores less than 40 points.]
18. Just a pup—A note from the Wheatland paper, “Lusk Junior High placed second in the Wheatland Junior High tournament played in Wheatland Friday and Saturday… The overall team play of the Tiger Cubs was outstanding, but the size of 6’7½” 13 year old [8th grader] Paul Kruse of Lusk was the talk of the tournament.” ‘Tall’ Paul would figure in more newsprint down the road as he aged and continued to grow past 7 feet tall.
19. You always shoot 100% at the wrong basket—Chris Kelly of Greybull posted a four-point play in a game versus Powell. According to an Associated Press release, “The Greybull sophomore took the ball after a jump against Powell and dribbled in to score. But he went the wrong way and scored two points in Powell’s basket. On the drive, he was fouled after the shot. So Kelly walked to his end of the court and hit two free throws to complete the four-point play—two for Powell and two for Greybull.”

Northeast
With the inaugural year of Casper Kelly Walsh, the WHSAA split the two Oil City high schools, sending Natrona to the AA South region while KW replaced the Mustangs in the northern tier of Class AA schools. Natrona tied for second in the South regular season while Sheridan did the same in the North. For regional play, the Mustangs surprised everybody with the championship, wresting away the top spot from Cheyenne Central in a double-overtime nail-biter. The going was tougher in the North, where both Kelly Walsh and Sheridan were eliminated from state tourney consideration by Big Horn Basin schools. A green KW crew would have to wait until the next season to notch its first victory. At state, Natrona made the semifinals but lost in overtime, then lost again on Saturday for a chance at third-place honors.
In Class A, Campbell County put together a solid season, taking the Absaraka Conference title, NE regular-season title, district honors and eventually the state title while posting a 22-2 mark. Although the losses were ugly road blemishes in Douglas and Class B Midwest, Gillette won with balanced scoring and no true dominant players. Douglas played the Camels twice at NE district play in Newcastle, coming close in the first game, but losing by double digits in the second. At state, the Bearcats went 0-2 losing to two SE schools. Campbell County bested two Big Horn Basin schools to make the finals, where the Camels faced Absaraka Conference foe University Prep. The game was close, and Gillette managed to win by five for its second state basketball championship.
Class B NE bragging rights went to Moorcroft, as the Wolves took the Powder River Conference championship by one game over Midwest, while Upton and Sundance tied for third. At the NE district tourney in Newcastle, those four teams made the semifinals with Upton winning over Midwest and Moorcroft topping Sundance. In the district final, Moorcroft took the No. 1 seed with a close win over Upton. In Laramie, neither team could find a W, although Moorcroft lost by only a point in its opener to Big Piney. Both the Wolves and Bobcats were through by Friday, exiting state tourney play with 0-2 marks.
Arvada was the best of the three NE district teams but couldn’t hold a candle to the NW entrant, Ten Sleep. The Pioneers had defeated Arvada by almost 20 points during the regular season and had hung 128 points on an undermanned Clearmont team as well. In Class C district play in Newcastle, Ten Sleep continued its mastery of the NE, outscoring Kaycee by 21 points and averaging over 93 points in two games against No. 2 seed Arvada. In Laramie, Arvada managed to stay all three days, winning on Friday after dropping its opener. The Pirates lost in the consolation finals to Chugwater on their final day.
Ten Sleep exited Laramie with the same 1-2 mark, winning its Thursday game then losing in the semis and third-place game.

Southeast
With the opening of the new Casper Kelly Walsh High School, both North and South regions of Class AA now had seven teams apiece. Casper Natrona was moved from the North into the South and fared well, tying with Laramie for second place. Cheyenne Central breezed through the regular season unscathed, save for two road losses to Colorado schools. In south region play at Torrington, Central squared off against Natrona in the finals and the Mustangs delivered the first in-state loss to the Indians, a double-overtime thriller. With the Mustangs taking the region championship and SW teams Rock Springs and Rawlins taking third and fourth seeds, Cheyenne Central was the only true SE team at state. The Indians fared well in Laramie, dropping a two-point game to eventual champion Powell and capturing third place over Natrona.
Class A St. Mary’s took the SE regular season title by one game over University Prep and as hosts of the SE district tourney were expected to do likewise. University Prep—a non-visitor to the state tourney the year before—sought to correct that blemish from the get-go. The Buckaroos stunned St. Mary’s for the SE district championship, winning by double digits. St. Mary’s defeated Lusk on Saturday to claim the No. 2 seed for the state tourney in Laramie, however. At Laramie, St. Mary’s dropped its opener, a five-point loss to Green River. In consolation play, the Gaels excelled, easily besting Douglas on Friday and Thermopolis on Saturday for the trophy. Both victories were by more than 20 points. University Prep won Thursday’s opener, then eked out a win over defending champ Green River in overtime. In the championship finale, the Buckaroos lost to Campbell County, losing by five points to become runners-up.
Guernsey-Sunrise and Albin tied for regular-season honors in the Class B Texas Trail Conference. Each team had hung a road loss on the other en route to 11-1 marks. Huntley was the only other team in the league to have a +.500 season, a 7-5 record heading into SE district play at Torrington. To reach the finals, Albin easily topped Pine Bluffs while Huntley surprised Guernsey-Sunrise in a shocker, winning by nine. The Class B state tourney bracket was pared to eight (from 16 the prior year) so only two teams from the SE would continue on in state tourney play. Albin took the No. 1 seed with a relatively easy W over Huntley on Saturday. At state, Huntley lost its opener, a two-point squeaker to Mt. View. The Cardinals won on Friday and lost to Cowley on Saturday in the consolation final. Albin continued its unbeaten streak as the Wildcats won over Cowley on Thursday, Big Piney on Friday and took home all the bacon on Saturday with a decisive win over Mt. View, the Wildcats’ second consecutive state title.
Class C LaGrange and Veteran staged a tight regular-season battle, tying for first place with 15-1 marks. Each team’s loss was a road loss to the other. It was expected that the two teams would meet in the finals of the SE district tourney in Torrington, and the Longhorns and Eagles didn’t disappoint. LaGrange bested Burns in the semis while Veteran did likewise to Chugwater. Veteran left Torrington with the championship, as the Eagles topped LaGrange by three to take the No. 1 seed. Burns defeated Chugwater in the battle to determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds. Prognosticators had LaGrange and Veteran squaring off in the state championship, but another SE team had a say in the outcome. At state, only Chugwater of the four SE teams lost its opener. The Buffaloes came back with a vengeance to easily cop consolation honors. In a memorable Class C semifinal, both games went to one-point overtime wins. LaGrange defeated Ten Sleep while Burns upset Veteran. On Saturday, Veteran took third place with an easy W over Ten Sleep. Burns upset the applecart again by thumping LaGrange by eight points, the Broncs’ first-ever state championship.

1965-1966 NW District
The Class AA Big Horn Basin schools showed the big-city schools around Wyoming what it was all about, landing both spots in the AA finals. Powell shined during the regular season, losing only once in 12 conference games. Sheridan finished second to the Panthers, a game ahead of Worland. Worland hosted the northern regional, which found Powell facing Riverton in one semifinal while the hosts faced Sheridan. Powell and Worland both won to set up the championship finale. Riverton and Cody won Saturday eliminators to face off for the No. 3 and 4 seeds, which was won by the Broncs. Powell bested Worland by 12 for the regional championship. At state, Riverton went 0-2, eliminated on Friday. Cody lasted all three days, losing in the consolation championship. Worland and Powell excelled, winning their openers and their semifinal games on their way to the state championship game. Powell won a close game by three points over Worland and with it Class AA bragging rights.
Of the five Class A Big Horn Basin teams, Lovell had the best season, posting only one loss in eight conference games. Thermopolis finished in second, a game ahead of third-place finishers Greybull and St. Stephens. Doormat Basin, winless in the BHB, faced Greybull in a district play-in game and won in overtime, ending the Buffaloes’ season a tad prematurely. St. Stephens lost to Thermopolis in round one while Basin bowed to the host Bulldogs. Lovell took NW district honors the following night with a decisive win over Thermopolis. At state, both Lovell and Thermopolis posted 1-2 records. The Bobcats, after losing their opener, won on Friday to advance to the consolation finals where they lost to St. Mary’s. The Bulldogs won their opener but then lost to eventual champion Campbell County in the semis. Green River kept Lovell from the third-place trophy on Saturday.
Four Class B Big Horn Basin teams had the best chances to go to the state tourney. Dubois topped the South circuit with a 13-1 record. Byron’s 12-3 mark was best in the North followed by Burlington and Cowley with 11-4 marks. Pavillion was the best of the rest with an even .500 result (7-7). At the NW district gathering in Shoshoni, Pavillion faced Shoshoni in one semifinal while Dubois squared off with Cowley in the other. Burlington and Byron had been sent to consolation play by Pavillion and Shoshoni, respectively. Pavillion polished off the hosts to make the finals while Cowley stunned Dubois. In Saturday’s finale, Pavillion whupped Cowley by 19 points for district bragging rights. Two weekends later in Laramie, both teams lasted all three days. Pavillion won its opener, then lost the next two games to SW schools, exiting Laramie with a 1-2 record. Cowley had better luck, losing to defending champion Albin on Thursday but rebounding with two wins over Moorcroft and Huntley to bag consolation honors.
Class C Ten Sleep again played a (mostly) Class B schedule versus the Big Horn Basin schools, one of five to finish the season above the .500 mark. At the NE/NW district tourney in Newcastle, the Pioneers dominated the NE competition, defeating Kaycee in the opener then topping Arvada twice en route to the championship. At state, Ten Sleep won its opener with ease over Chugwater then dropped an overtime semifinal game to LaGrange on Friday, losing by one. Facing Veteran in the third-place game, the Pioneers lost by double digits, ending their stay in Laramie with a 1-2 mark.

Rat Droppings***I found these two scores in the Worland paper. I’m not totally sure it’s prep competition or not. The article went on to say that WII was 6-0 after these two wins. I believe Lookout Mountain was a boys school not unlike WII.

Southwest
It was a so-so season for the two Class AA teams from the SW. Both Rock Springs and Rawlins underachieved during the regular season, finishing fourth and sixth respectively out of the seven-team region. However, both teams managed to qualify for the state tourney again, in spite of their tepid showings during the early winter months. At the regional tourney in Torrington, both teams upset defending champion Laramie, Rawlins in the opener and then Rock Springs in a Saturday morning eliminator. The Outlaws dispatched Cheyenne East in the other eliminator and the two SW teams battled for the No. 3 and 4 seeds with the Tigers winning easily. At state, Rawlins was two and done losing to eventual champ Powell and Cody. Rock Springs lost their opener to another Big Horn Basin team—Worland—but then took consolation honors with two wins over Riverton and Cody.
Green River, as defending Class A champion, received the most love from pollsters during the year. Many saw a Green River/Lovell battle for the state championship, but that was not to be. However, the regular season in the SW played out with the Wolves going undefeated versus their counterparts. It was anyone’s guess which other team would accompany Green River to Laramie as Evanston, Kemmerer and Star Valley all took turns defeating each other and ended February play in a three-way tie. At the SW district in Green River, Kemmerer got the bad luck of the draw and was ousted by Green River in the semis while Star Valley lost to Evanston in the other. Evanston lost to the hosts in the championship and then qualified the next day with another win over Star Valley. At state, Evanston was two and done, losing to two Big Horn Basin teams. Green River lasted all three days, winning its opener, losing an OT game in the semis and copping the third-place trophy over Lovell the final day.
Class B was the domain of the Mountain View Buffalos as they took regular-season play by two games over neighboring Lyman. Big Piney and Saratoga tied for third place, a game ahead of Hanna. In the SW district semis, Mt. View squared off against Big Piney while Saratoga and Lyman did likewise. The winners were Mt. View (in OT) and Lyman. The two Uinta County schools routinely faced one another during district play, and this season was no different, albeit during the finals. Mt. View won handily, taking the season series 2-1. Lyman had to play Big Piney in a challenge game on Monday in Green River (the two schools had split home wins) and Big Piney made it to state for the fourth straight season with a close win. At state, the two SW schools excelled, with Big Piney taking third place and Mt. View making the championship finals, losing to repeat champ Albin.
The five SW Class C schools were grouped a bit tighter than years before at the end of regular season play. Snake River won the conference title over Medicine Bow and Encampment by a single game. Host Medicine Bow defeated Encampment in one district semifinal while Snake River polished off Farson-Eden in the other. Medicine Bow and Snake River had traded home wins during the regular season and the Wranglers took the title. Snake River had to defeat Farson-Eden the final day to qualify for state and did so for the second time in SW district play and fourth time overall over the Pronghorns. At state, neither Medicine Bow nor Snake River managed to win a game, exiting Laramie with 0-2 marks.
