Noteworthy Events of the 1964-1965 Season
1. A Laramie repeat—It was back-to-back state titles for the Laramie as the Plainsmen posted a two-loss season en route to the state title banner. Rival Cheyenne Central had an off year but did manage to hang one loss on Laramie, again in the regional championship game. Up north, Sheridan had an offensive juggernaut, an attack that could easily rack up 90 or 100 points. As north regional champs, the Broncs were expected to challenge for the title, but the two teams met in the state tourney semifinals due to Laramie’s regional loss. Laramie put the clamps on Sheridan, holding the Broncs to their lowest point total of the year. One night later the Plainsmen easily defeated Cinderella Rawlins for their second consecutive title.

3. Green River takes the Class A banner—The Green River Wolves were an unexpected champion, unranked in one final poll and at No. 8 in the other. Lovell received the most love from pollsters during the year along with St. Mary’s and University Prep. The Prepsters, however, were bounced from state tourney play at the SE district tourney in Lusk, with two losses to Wheatland. Evanston took regular season honors in the SW but Green River surprised them in the SW district championship. Lovell easily won the NW district while Gillette took the NE. At state, Lovell and Evanston squared off in one semifinal while St. Mary’s and Green River did likewise. Lovell won by double digits to make the Class A finale. Green River joined them with a narrow win over St. Mary’s. Green River took Lovell by five points to win it all on Saturday night, the Wolves’ first state hoops title.

5. Albin captures an expanded Class B state tourney bracket—The WHSAA doubled the size of the Class B bracket to 16 teams, taking four teams from each corner of the state. Favorites for the title included Byron, which entered the state tourney as the only undefeated team, and Big Piney, which had lost only one game to Class B competition. Best of the NE district was Tongue River while a trio of SE schools had a chance: Texas Trail champ Guernsey-Sunrise, Huntley and Albin. State tourney play began on Wednesday within the bracket and Guernsey-Sunrise and Huntley were sent to consolation play after day one. After Thursday’s day of play, Byron, Tongue River, Big Piney and Albin had qualified for the semifinals. Byron easily won on Friday over Tongue River and Albin shocked Big Piney with an equally lopsided win. Byron came up a game short of a perfect season in the finale, as Albin took it all with a nine-point victory. It marked the first time a school moved up in size—the Wildcats were Class C the year before—to take the state title.

7. LaGrange returns to a familiar spot—It was a familiar refrain for the Class C schools as the SE teams won every game on opening day at the state tourney. Veteran and Chugwater were expected to win as they had been among the B/C polls all season long. However, Yoder and LaGrange were both unranked. On Friday’s games LaGrange upset Chugwater by three points while Veteran vanquished Yoder, their Goshen County rival/next door neighbor, by double digits. It was an all-Goshen County finale, as LaGrange continued its hot streak with a shellacking of Veteran. The title was LaGrange’s fifth and Coach Ron Schliske’s final state championship.

12. Tweaks to the Big Horn Basin championship—Since the Class AA schools in the Big Horn Basin did a better job of scheduling Natrona and Sheridan into the regular season schedule—although not completely—the Class A teams of the BHB only counted one game against the larger schools instead of both the traditional home and away games. It was decided that the conference championship would be awarded by win percentage points, due to the unequal number of games being played.
13. TV games—Laramie played Casper Natrona in front of TV cameras in one of the first regular-season televised prep basketball games in Wyoming. [Rat’s note: I don’t believe this was the first one, but I’ve not found evidence of one sooner than this to date.] The broadcast was aired by KTWO TV in Casper and the town of Laramie was able to tune in via their community TV system. This game was contested on Feb. 12, 1965. The Plainsmen handily won the road game—87-67—and extended their season record at the time to 15-0. The following night KTWO televised the Sheridan/Natrona game, which was won by the Broncs 89-75. It was a tough weekend for the Mustangs, hosting the top two teams in the state.
14. Lucky uniforms—Back in 1935, then-Cheyenne head coach John Powell ordered a set of eight warm-up uniforms—more precisely jersey and sweat pants— for the Indian varsity team. The original purchase price was just under $20 for each one, a total of $160. The purchase proved to be a savvy one, as Cheyenne used them for the next 30 years. The heavy, brushed wool uniforms had a bright red V emblazoned on the front and flaps that bounced in the back. During that three decade span, Cheyenne High School (and then Cheyenne Central) won 13 state championships (with three runners-up finishes) and over 600 games, posting a 626-155 mark to be exact. More than 700 Indian athletes used the uniforms.
Larry Birleffi, whose weekly sports byline was a constant must-read for sports fans statewide, wrote the original article for the Wyoming Eagle and followed up that missive with comments from readers in his weekly column. “The scratchy, itchy outfits…must’ve had some sort of black magic woven into them,” wrote one CHS grad. “Send me my old outfit,” said Curt Gowdy, who was Wyoming’s most famous sports figure and broadcaster at the time. Green Bay Packer end Boyd Dowler commented, “One of my biggest thrills was the day I found out I earned a place on the team and got to wear one of those outfits.” Dowler’s father Walt coached the Indians to their first state championship. Then legendary coach Okie Blanchard added nine more banners, followed by Jim Storey’s three.
Coach Storey retired the threadbare warm-ups for the ’64-’65 season. Central did qualify for the state tourney that season, but lost in the third-place game, signaling a possible end to the Indians’ magic. Birleffi quipped that maybe it was time to retrieve the old uniforms out of mothballs. It’s hard to believe that warm-up uniforms merited a whole page of newsprint—with eight photos of players past and present wearing their old togs—but maybe it was a slow day for sports news (or a chance to brag on Cheyenne’s dominance on the hardwood.)
15. Tongue River 18, Sundance 17—A 1930s throwback game? New Sundance coach Bob Beaudoin tried a delay game against the powerhouse Tongue River team. The Bulldogs were 0-7 entering the game and tried the stall versus the 3-1 Eagles. The Bulldogs saw initial success leading 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, taking up most of the time with deliberate ball handling. Tongue River didn’t press but rebounded when Sundance got hungry for a shot. At halftime the Eagles led 8-5. “The fans were beginning to mutter,” quoted the Associated Press article. Sundance pulled into a 14-14 tie by the end of the third quarter although foul trouble was catching up with Sundance. (Tongue River had cashed in six free throws as a result.) With Tongue River leading by one 16-15, with a minute left to play in the game, the Bulldogs committed a turnover on an offensive foul and the Eagles’ star, Bud Jelly, tallied a field goal to make it 18-15. Sundance canned a jump shot but time ran out on their upset attempt. The Sundance paper’s account of the game ran this title: ‘Dogs Bow 18-17.

Northeast
Sheridan had the better year of the two Class AA teams from the NE. The Broncs used a platoon system and put up point totals over 100 thrice and 90 or more five times. Sheridan suffered only one loss within Wyoming, to Lander, which was avenged in February. Natrona’s season saw only five victories, the best of which was probably over Cheyenne Central late in the season. At the district tourney in Lander, Sheridan won its opener while Natrona lost. Natrona won a Friday game but was eliminated in a Saturday morning qualifier. Sheridan faced the hosts in the semis and won an overtime thriller by two. By besting Worland in the regional finale, the Broncs were touted as the team most likely to upset favored Laramie at state. The two teams did meet in the semis, but the Plainsmen were able to throttle the Broncs’ scoring machine to only 53 points in the win. The final day Sheridan took third place with an easy win over Central.
SE doormat Douglas joined the three Class A NE teams for the district tourney in Buffalo. The Bison were favored to take it all, based on their regular-season effort, a 4-2 mark over the three other teams. Douglas came close to upsetting the hosts in the opener, losing by just two points. Gillette won handily over Newcastle. In the semis, Gillette eked out a one-point win over Buffalo and awaited a consolation winner for the finals. Buffalo eliminated Newcastle to qualify for state and setting up the district title game rematch. The Camels took another one from the Bison to claim the NE district title. At state, Buffalo lasted all three days in Laramie, losing the opener, ousting St. Stephens on Friday and losing in the consolation finals against Gillette, their fifth game of the year versus Campbell County. Gillette finished 2-1 in the Gem City and brought home the consolation trophy.
Tongue River and Moorcroft tied for regular-season honors in the Class B portion of the NE, while Midwest and Upton finished in third, two games back. Tongue River, by virtue of its first-round bye, was an automatic qualifier for the district semifinal in Buffalo and faced Midwest while Moorcroft and Upton squared off in the other half of the bracket. The Eagles prevailed over the Oilers and the Bobcats did likewise over the Wolves. Midwest and Sundance—the latter an unexpected outlier—won Saturday morning qualifiers over Big Horn and Moorcroft, respectively. Midwest took the No. 3 seed over Sundance later that same day. Tongue River took its third straight Class B NE district championship by defeating Upton. At state, Sundance was two and done as was Midwest. Upton won its opener but was eliminated on Thursday with a two-point loss to Big Piney. Tongue River made the final four, dropping the semifinal game to top-ranked Byron. On Saturday the Eagles lost the third-place game by two points in overtime.
Class C Arvada won the conference easily over Kaycee and Clearmont, but was expected to have troubles against Ten Sleep, a team that defeated the Pirates by almost 20 points in December. Arvada won its opener as did Ten Sleep and the two winners met on Friday and the Pioneers repeated their December effort, winning by over 20 points. Arvada played a consolation eliminator, winning against Kaycee, and returned to face Ten Sleep once more for the district championship. The Pirates shocked everyone with a one-point win to claim district bragging rights, exiting Buffalo as champs. At state, the two NE qualifiers were destined to meet again as both dropped their openers, won their Friday games and found themselves playing one another for the consolation championship. Ten Sleep took that game with a comfortable win over Arvada.

It was back-to-back state titles for the Laramie Plainsmen as the Gem City crew stormed through the regular season, undefeated until the final week of February. A week later, at the Class AA south region tourney in Cheyenne, the Central Indians upset the Plainsmen in the finals, repeating their effort from the season before. At the SW district tourney Cheyenne East and Torrington were eliminated from state tourney play. North region champion Sheridan was a strong entry and was the only north team to win an opening-round game. Sheridan faced Laramie in the semis while Central squared off with Rawlins, a surprise semifinalist. Laramie easily handled Sheridan and Rawlins continued to amaze with a four-point win over Central. Saturday, the Plainsmen were too tough for the Outlaws and Laramie reigned again over the largest schools as state champs.
Class A St. Mary’s, University Prep and Wheatland staged a tight race in the SE with the Gaels finishing first, the Bulldogs second and the Buckaroos third. The district tourney in Lusk saw a similar result, as St. Mary’s took home the championship and Wheatland grabbed the runners-up spot with two wins over Prep. At state Wheatland was two and done, losing both games by a total of five points. St. Mary’s had better luck, winning its opener, losing in the semis to eventual champ Green River, then bouncing back to cop third-place honors with a convincing win over Evanston.
With the Class B state tourney bracket being doubled to 16 teams, the Texas Trail conference sent four strong teams to Laramie. Guernsey-Sunrise had copped regular season honors with only one road loss. Huntley finished in second while Albin—a newcomer to the Class B ranks—took third. At the regional in Lingle and Torrington, Albin faced Huntley in semifinals while Guernsey-Sunrise and Glenrock did likewise. Albin surprised Huntley and faced the regular-season champs in the finale. The Wildcats avenged two regular-season losses to Guernsey-Sunrise with an easy win. Glenrock took third place on Saturday, defeating Huntley for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. At state, only Glenrock and Albin won their openers while Huntley and Guernsey-Sunrise moved to the consolation portion of the tourney bracket. Both Huntley and Guernsey-Sunrise won on Thursday and Friday, so the two teams squared off for consolation honors. The Vikings won, but it took two overtimes. Glenrock lost on Thursday and exited the tourney with a 1-1 record. Albin kept winning its way to the finals and took the championship from No. 1 ranked Byron on Saturday. Rarely has a team moved up in classification and won it all. Albin was the first to do so.
For Class C competition, all eyes were on Chugwater unlike the year before when the Buffaloes won it all as relative unknowns. Even with the scrutiny, Chugwater did win the regular season by a game over Veteran and LaGrange and was expected to face Veteran—which had hung two losses on Chugwater—in the district finals in Huntley and Torrington. Chugwater squared off with Yoder in the semis with Veteran and LaGrange doing the same. Chugwater and Veteran both won, sending Yoder and LaGrange to Saturday morning eliminators. The two semifinal losers won those games and played for the No. 3 and 4 seeds with LaGrange winning. Chugwater got payback from Veteran with a district championship. At state, all four teams won on Thursday. Friday, LaGrange shocked Chugwater with a close thee-point win. Veteran easily handled Yoder. Saturday, Chugwater took third place with an easy win over Yoder. LaGrange stunned fans again with an easy win over Veteran for the state championship, coach Ron Schliske’s fourth.

Class AA Powell and Worland battled mightily for the Big Horn Basin bragging rights and the Panthers ended up in front by one game by the end of the season. Could either of the two schools challenge scoring machine Sheridan at the North regional in Cody? Part of that was determined on Friday as Worland and Powell squared off in the semis—the teams had split wins during the regular season—and the Warriors won by two to make the finals. Powell won a Saturday-morning eliminator and defeated Lander in the battle for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. Sheridan proved too much for Worland as the Broncs breezed to the district championship. At state Powell was two and done, as was Worland. Lander excelled all three days, losing its opener in a close game with Central, then taking the next two games for the consolation championship.
St. Stephens moved from the Class B ranks to Class A and the Eagles saw success at that level, finishing third among the five Big Horn Basin teams. Lovell finished atop the Class A teams with a perfect 8-0 mark, followed by Thermopolis. Basin hosted the NW district tourney, which was handily won by Lovell. St. Stephens had lost two regular-season contests against Thermopolis but eked out a three-point win in the semis over the Bobcats. Their loss to Lovell left them with the No. 2 seed from the NW. A five-point loss to Green River left the Bulldogs as runners-up. The loss to the Wolves was their first loss to a Class A school all season long.
All eyes were on Byron for the entire season, most of it spent atop the AP and UPI Class B/C polls. The Eagles breezed through the regular season undefeated, winning 17 of 18 games by double digits. Only their regular-season finale victory was by less than 10 points and that was eight points in a 78-70 win over Manderson. NW district played out the same way as Byron routed Deaver, Burlington and Manderson on the way to the No. 1 seed. With Class B having 16 teams in the bracket in Laramie, Burlington and Pavillion (a surprise winner over Dubois) took the No. 3 and 4 seeds toward SE Wyoming. Burlington and Pavillion’s success was limited to two games apiece at state; two and done. Manderson did win the opener but was eliminated the following day by eventual champion Albin. Byron kept its win streak intact through Friday—24 games—but were surprised in the finals by the aforementioned Wildcats. It was a spectacular season for Byron that ended one game shy of perfect.
Class C Ten Sleep had a rough go of it playing against NW Class B teams, managing only two wins in conference play. But the Pioneers found things to be a lot easier when they went over the hill to Buffalo for district play versus Arvada, Clearmont and Kaycee. They opened with wins against Kaycee followed by a semifinal win over Arvada. Arvada won a Saturday-morning eliminator and surprised Ten Sleep in the district finale by a basket. At state, Ten Sleep lasted all three days, losing its opener but bouncing back to take its next two games for the consolation championship. The Pioneers’ four wins in tourney play matched their quartet of regular-season victories.

Rat Droppings***Shoshoni had to pull out of the tournament because of “disciplinary reasons” prior to playing their consolation quarterfinal match with Cowley. According to the Worland paper, the Shoshoni superintendent of schools said the team was removed from the tourney because of an “incident” that happened on Thursday, the second day of the district tourney. No further explanation was given and it marked an ignoble end to the three-year state championship reign of the Wranglers.

1964-1965 SW District
Both SW Class AA schools made the journey to Laramie for state tourney. For Rock Springs, it was expected as the Tigers finished second in the region standings. Rawlins’ presence there was a surprise, given its lackluster regular-season mark, with only two January wins and two February victories (over Class A opposition). Rawlins hosted the regional, which worked in the Outlaws’ favor. Rawlins upset Cheyenne East in the opener, played Laramie in a close loss in the semis, then took the No. 3 seed with two wins on Saturday, the latter over Rock Springs, which qualified the Tigers for the No. 4 seed. At Laramie, Rock Springs dropped its opener on Thursday, won on Friday and lost in the consolation final the last day. Rawlins kept up its hot play, winning two on its way to the Class AA championship where the Outlaws lost to Laramie. The Outlaws’ five wins in March were one more than they had all during the previous three months of play.
Evanston—the regular-season champion—and Green River—the runners-up—were expected to exit SW district play to progress to the state tournament. That’s exactly how the district tourney in Green River played out. The Wolves reversed the final standings, topping the Red Devils in a tight overtime win on Friday. Evanston had to wait until Saturday to qualify, besting the crew from Jackson. At state, both Evanston and Green River made the semifinals. Evanston lost its game to Lovell, which was the highest ranked qualifying Class A team from the AA/A polls—University Prep didn’t qualify—so the loss wasn’t a surprise. Green River had better luck edging St. Mary’s by five to make the championship finale. On Saturday, Evanston lost to St. Mary’s in the third-place game. Green River surprised many with a win over Lovell for all the marbles, the Wolves’ first state hoops championship.
Big Piney was again the powerhouse of the SW Class B ranks, eventually posting its fourth straight 20-plus-win season, quite the impressive run for Coach Otto Low’s troops. The Punchers took regular-season honors by two games over Saratoga. Hanna finished third and Lyman fourth. That order was repeated in the SW district tourney in Green River. After a first-round bye, Big Piney went through the opposition with ease winning both games—the latter over runners-up Saratoga—by double digits. Hanna and Lyman met the final day for the No. 3 and 4 seeds and the score was close, a four-point W by the Miners. At state, Hanna lasted two days, winning its opener and losing in the quarterfinals to (then) undefeated Byron. Saratoga and Lyman lasted three days, losing their openers, winning their Thursday games and losing their consolation semifinal games to two Texas Trail schools. Big Piney lasted all four days, winning its way into the championship semifinals. There the Punchers lost to eventual champion Albin. The Punchers bounced back on Saturday, winning third place for the second consecutive year.
Medicine Bow had the best record in the Class C SW, capturing conference honors by a game over Snake River. Encampment, however, surprised Medicine Bow in a Friday game at the Saratoga district tourney site. This set up a SW district finale between Encampment and Snake River, which the Rattlers won with ease over the Tigers. At state, both SW teams were eliminated on Friday by teams from the NE/NW district, and they both exited Laramie with 0-2 marks.

If that’s the case, I’m guessing the 12/18 or 1/30 game was a loss and the other wasn’t played. The Rat has Farson for an 0-16 mark in the previous year. Given their sizable win over Big Piney at the season’s end, I’d say the St. Stephens game was the loss while the Big Piney game in January wasn’t contested.
