Noteworthy Events of the 1962-1963 Season
1. Four classifications—With the beginning of the 2022-2023 basketball season, Wyoming will have completed 60 years of maintaining four classifications of high school hoops. It had been tried for a couple years in the early 1950s, then shelved, but the 1962-1963 season is a line drawn in the sand, so to speak, ergo: The largest schools in Wyoming would compete with schools of a similar size for their own state championship. Two Class AA regions were designated. The South consisted of Rock Springs, Rawlins, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Laramie and Torrington. The North had five Big Horn Basin schools—Cody, Lander, Powell, Riverton and Worland—plus Casper Natrona and Sheridan. The smallest of the South schools, Torrington, was not pleased with the setup. Torrington made a concerted effort to join a Nebraska Panhandle conference—one might note the Trailblazers’ schedule had several more Nebraska teams than usual—but reluctantly agreed to accept the WHSAA’s plan. There was no conference of Class AA teams. Big Horn Basin teams played their traditional foes be it Class AA or Class A. That made seedings for the regional challenging—it ended up being a blind draw—but since the South regional eliminated only two teams while the North meant the season’s end for three teams, there were few gripes.
2. Three in a row for Cheyenne Central—The four South Region representatives—No. 1 seed Cheyenne Central, No. 2 Laramie, No. 3 Cheyenne East and No. 4 Rock Springs—along with the four North Region teams—No. 1 seed Cody, No. 2 Natrona, No. 3 Riverton and No. 4 Powell—were bracketed into the eight-team state tourney bracket. Day one of the tourney had two surprises as Rock Springs upset Cody along with Riverton winning over Laramie. The higher seeds won the semifinal games: Riverton over Rock Springs and Cheyenne Central toppling Natrona. Central and Riverton squared off on Saturday for all the marbles and the Indians three-peated. It wasn’t a huge surprise as Central had been ranked atop the polls for most of the season. Their win streak, begun two seasons back, ended early on in Colorado at 39 consecutive games. Both their Wyoming losses occurred in Albany County, one to UPrep and the other in OT to Laramie. Maybe it was fitting that Central won its third straight championship in Albany County, as well.
3. Class AA all-state tourney selections—

4. Lovell’s Cardiac Kids take Class A honors—With the larger schools in the state having their own tourney, the Class A ranks were anyone’s guess. The pollsters still ranked the Class A schools in with the Class AA ones, which made prognostication even tougher. The team that ranked consistently the highest was a newcomer to the Class A ranks, University Prep, moved up that season from Class B. Yet Prep had been upset in SE district play by Wheatland. Lovell received some love from the polls, as did Star Valley. Newcastle was the last team in the state to suffer a defeat, yet it was a weakened squad that the Dogies brought to Laramie, via sickness and injury. Day one in Laramie saw total dominance from the west side of the state as Greybull, Evanston, Lovell and Star Valley all won. For the semifinals, the Big Horn Basin schools took control. Greybull manhandled Evanston while Lovell eked out another win. The championship finale between the two conference foes was fierce, and the Bulldogs took the trophy by a scant three points over the Buffaloes. Lovell’s three wins were by a total of 10 points, with the initial victory in OT, so their moniker of “Cardiac Kids” was well-earned.

6. Another Shoshoni title—Once St. Stephens’ state tourney nemesis, University Prep, entered the Class A ranks at the start of the season, most figured that the Eagles would finish atop the Class B. However, conference foe and reigning state champion Shoshoni provided ample competition. Another Class B team showing promise was Big Piney, which had finished its conference play undefeated and had split with Shoshoni and St. Stephens on a December road trip to Fremont County, besting the Wranglers and losing to the Eagles. At the state tourney in Laramie, the west side of the state dominated day one—like it occurred in the Class A ranks— with Mt. View, St. Stephens, Big Piney and Shoshoni all winning. The second day recorded the tourney’s biggest upset as Mt. View surprised St. Stephens by three. Shoshoni exacted revenge for its December loss to Big Piney, easily defeating the Punchers. The grand finale had Shoshoni winning easily over Mt. View for its repeat championship.
7. Class B all-state tourney selections—

8. Kaycee surprises all—The Class C ranks had been the purview of the SE conferences for the past decade. That changed with this tourney as the NE portion of the state sent two powerhouses, Kaycee and Clearmont, to Laramie. The SE still sent four teams to state as the SE had 10 small schools compared to the four in the NE/NW and the five in the SW. Day one of the state tourney had two winners from the SE—Veteran and Albin—along with the two NE schools. The semifinals had Kaycee defeating Veteran by five points and Clearmont topping Albin by 10. The finals guaranteed a first-ever Class C winner from the NE. The two teams were playing for a fifth time—Clearmont, as district champ, held a 3-1 edge heading into the championship—but this time Kaycee won a foul-fest by seven points, its initial state title.

Not all were pleased with the four classification setup—Greybull coach Tony Vinnola bemoaned the Class A NW district tourney in Thermopolis, calling it “a mess.” The event had been pared down to four teams as five of nine Big Horn Basin schools were regrouped in the Class AA North region. Vinnola continued, “There is very little interest in a four-team tournament. I think this new plan is a very definite move to de-emphasize the tournament. We would rather take our chances in an eight-team tournament with both Class A and AA schools. I think we could hold our own in a tournament.” Class A teams Greybull and Lovell tied for second place in the regular season, a traditional Big Horn Basin schedule of 16 games. The coach probably had a point, as both Lovell and Greybull finished one-two at the district tourney and repeated the same finish two weekends later at the state tourney in Laramie.
15. Too many quarters?—Big Horn protested its 63-36 loss to Sundance claiming that a Bulldog player played six quarters, one more than the allowed five by rule. Sundance denied the charges and the matter was turned over to the WHSAA to decide/investigate. The protest was not allowed when it was discovered that the Bulldog in question had fouled out of the JV game he played in the third quarter, racking up only three quarters in that game instead of the four claimed by the Rams (plus two other varsity quarters.) One imagines that the WHSAA sees this problem arise now and then, but rarely does it play out in newsprint like this case did. It was a rare case of where fouling out of a game was a good thing rather than a negative one.
16. Fouls aplenty in Afton—Rawlins and Star Valley played a game where 58 personal fouls were whistled, 29 on each team. The Braves avenged an earlier season loss to the Outlaws with a 52-41 win. Five Rawlins players fouled out and the Braves capitalized, making 30 points from the foul line compared to 15 for the visitors from Carbon County. No Star Valley players fouled out, although five Braves ended the game with four fouls apiece.
17. Tweaks for next year—Class AA schools met at the end of March to work out round robin, home and home schedules for the teams comprising each region of the classification. Problems arose with the 1962-63 schedules as teams like Torrington refused to play SW schools Rawlins and Rock Springs. Up north the five Big Horn Basin teams opted for a traditional conference schedule of both AA and Class A schools, which in turn allowed for few chances for Sheridan and Casper Natrona to schedule extensively with the AA Big Horn Basin schools. The changes, it was hoped, would still allow for traditional games with non-loop teams but would also provide a possibility of properly seeding the season-ending tourneys.

Northeast
Casper Natrona and Sheridan were tossed into the newly formed Class AA division for tourney play although the teams did not play a balanced schedule — due mainly to the Big Horn Basin teams keeping their traditional 16-game BHB schedule. Both NE AA schools ended the season above .500; however, only Casper Natrona stayed among the top five in the polls all season long. At the first AA North regional in Cody, the Mustangs found their way into the championship game along with the hosts. (Sheridan’s tournament had ended earlier with a consolation eliminator loss to Powell.) Natrona lost to Cody for regional honors. At state, Casper proved the pollsters correct by finishing third with an easy win over Rock Springs.
Newcastle had the best regular season as three of its five losses were administered by Class AA teams. The Dogies were the hosts of the four-team district tourney (Lusk was moved to the NE district after losing a coin flip) and handled the Tigers and the Camels (twice) with ease for the championship. Newcastle had lost two starters by the time the state tourney began, one to a knee injury and one to hospitalization. The weakened Dogie squad dropped its opener to Evanston but roared back with two wins to cop consolation honors. Campbell County finished 0-2 in the Gem City.
Upton sailed through regular season Class B play with only one conference loss. Sundance and Tongue River finished tied for second. NW team Meeteetse was added to the NE district to fill out the eight-team bracket. For district play in Newcastle, the two runners-up met in the semifinals and Tongue River won the rubber game as the Eagles and Bulldogs had split games during the regular season. Upton cruised through to the finals with an easy semifinal W. Tongue River kept up its hot play and surprised the Bobcats in the district finale, winning easily. At state, both teams dropped their openers, then won their second games to meet again in the consolation finals. Tongue River had Upton’s number again and easily took home the consolation trophy.
The decade-long stranglehold by the southeast schools in the Class C ranks was finally wrested away by two teams from the NE. Clearmont and Kaycee had tied for the conference title and it was anyone’s guess which team would be district champion. Both teams had hung a loss on the other and would no doubt meet again in the final. In the openers, Clearmont easily took care of Ten Sleep while Kaycee did likewise to Arvada. In the final district game, Clearmont had little difficulty in besting Kaycee. At state, both teams took their openers, then both won again in the semis over SE district teams. For all the marbles, Kaycee triumphed over Clearmont by a 61-54 count, their second win in five games between the two schools.

Cheyenne Central posted its third consecutive basketball championship, although this one wasn’t quite as easy. The Indians dropped three games all told—the initial L ending their winning streak at 39— including a conference matchup at Laramie at the end of the regular season. That loss was only their second loss to the Plainsmen dating back to the middle of WWII—a 44-2 w-l mark over almost two decades—and served notice that easy Ws were a thing of the past versus LHS. Central breezed through Class AA tourney play, winning all but the state championship game by double digits. Riverton came close during the finale, but Cheyenne won by five for coach Jim Storey’s third banner in a row. Laramie took consolation honors as the host team at state posting a 2-1 mark. No. 3 seed Cheyenne East was two and done.
With the larger schools out of the running, the Class A tourneys were wide open and it was anyone’s guess which school would take all the marbles. University Prep had moved up to Class A, and its season was one of surprises as the Buckaroos defeated both Cheyenne schools, Natrona and all their conference opposition during the regular season. Wheatland upset Prep at the district tourney but the Albany County team fought back to take second place and earn a crosstown trip to the state tourney. Prep had the bad luck to face eventual champion Lovell in the opener and lost in an overtime thriller. The Buckaroos bounced back to compete for the consolation championship but lost by five to Newcastle. Wheatland finished the season 0-2 at state.
Class B Glenrock ran the table in Texas Trail regular season play, and it was expected that either Pine Bluffs or Lingle would be the Herders’ biggest threat at the Torrington district tourney. A Big Horn Basin team, Pavillion, rounded out the eight-team bracket. (Two other NW schools were sent to different district tourneys as well: Morton to the SW and Meeteetse to the NE.) In a departure from tradition, first-round losers were automatically eliminated from further competition, so the Panthers, as well as Glendo, Huntley and Guernsey, were sent packing after day one. When the dust settled, Glenrock was crowned SE district champ and Pine Bluffs took second by defeating Lingle, a team that had defeated the Hornets in the opening round. Class B state tourney play had been reduced from 12 to eight teams, and it wasn’t the Texas Trail representatives’ year, as both Glenrock and Pine Bluffs exited the tourney 0-2.
The new 10-team conference of Class C SE teams finished the regular season with Veteran on top and Carpenter a close second. Albin finished in third with Chugwater and LaGrange close behind. At the Huntley district tourney, Veteran backed up bragging rights with the No. 1 seed, winning handily over runner-up Albin. Carpenter, exiled to consolation play after a close semifinal loss to Albin, rebounded with two wins, the latter for the No. 3 seed over LaGrange. Pundits had all but awarded Veteran a place in the state finals, such was the cachet of the SE teams, but the four teams all found difficulty in Laramie. LaGrange lost to Veteran in the opener and exited competition on Friday with an 0-2 mark. Finalist Clearmont defeated Carpenter in the Coyotes’ first game and in the semifinals Clearmont again polished off another SE team, this time Albin. Carpenter battled back to the consolation championship but lost, ending the weekend 1-2. Veteran lost in the semis to eventual champion Kaycee and squared off against Albin for third place, winning handily, the Eagles’ fourth win of the 1962-63 season versus the Wildcats. Veteran ended state tourney play at 2-1, Albin at 1-2.

Rat Droppings: Torrington seriously considered joining a western Nebraska conference as school officials were less than thrilled about the Trailblazers’ move to Class AA competition. (A quick check of their schedule shows a larger than usual number of foes from the Cornhusker state and neither SW AA team.) Northwest
Five Big Horn Basin teams were promoted to Class AA, yet the conference held true to form and scheduled a traditional conference schedule with the four Class A teams. Three teams qualified for the state tourney, including regular-season champion Riverton, regional host and champ Cody and surprise winner Powell, which upset Sheridan to snag a berth in the state tourney bracket. At state, Riverton made it all the way to the finals, losing by five to three-peater Cheyenne Central. Powell lost in the consolation finals while Cody was two and done in Laramie.
Class A teams Greybull and Lovell tied for second in regular season — they split their two games, each winning on the road — although there was grumbling about a lackluster four-team tourney, the two teams met in the district finals as expected. Lovell won the district championship and Greybull took second two days later with a challenge game victory against Thermopolis. In Laramie, the two Big Horn Basin teams both won their Thursday and Friday games and squared off for the first (Class AA-free) Class A state championship. The Bulldogs won a close game over the Buffaloes by three points, claiming the championship trophy.
Whereas pundits were surprised that two NW teams came out on top in Class A, most expected NW powers St. Stephens and Shoshoni to duke it out for top honors in Class B. Both teams registered 15-1 regular season marks in conference play, with the two teams splitting road wins against the other. District play solved little as the Wranglers and the Eagles breezed through the first two days’ worth of competition to meet in the finals. The Eagles came out on top, just as the pollsters had predicted, while the Wranglers settled for second place. At state St. Stephens was surprised by Mt. View in the semifinals while Shoshoni had an easier time of it with a win over Big Piney. The rematch between the two NW schools was spoiled, but both teams played well on Saturday with St. Stephens winning third place and Shoshoni repeating as state champions.
Class C Ten Sleep played full NW Class B schedule with occasional glimpses at NE schools Arvada, Clearmont and Kaycee. The Pioneers made the trip across state to play in the district tourney at Newcastle, losing first to Clearmont and then to Arvada.

For the two SW Class AA schools, it was a so-so regular season. Both Rawlins and Rock Springs finished above .500 — feasting on mostly traditional SW Class A teams — but only the Tigers could extend the campaign to the state tourney, and that was as a No. 4 seed. After dispatching Cody in the first round, Rock Springs lost both its semifinal and third-place games, exiting Laramie with a 1-2 mark.
The five SW Class A teams met in perennial host city Green River to claim the two spots available for hoopsters in the state tourney bracket. Evanston had breezed through the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record versus the other four teams, earning a first-round bye, while the remaining quartet squared off. Star Valley won over the hosts — a direct route to the finals — while Kemmerer bested Jackson to face Evanston. The Red Devils polished off Kemmerer and dropped its first Class A game of the year to Star Valley in OT, a classic SW championship. They qualified for state on Saturday, defeating Kemmerer for the second time in three days. At state, Star Valley had the better stay, capturing third place with another tourney win over Evanston.
Class B was dominated by Big Piney as the Punchers went through their conference opponents unscathed at 12-0. Mt. View was second with a 10-2 record and Lyman was the only other team with a +.500 mark (7-5). At the district tourney in Green River, the two top teams excelled, both winning their way into the championship game with double-digit victories. In the finale, Big Piney outlasted Mt. View by a tight three-point margin to take the No. 1 seed. At state, Mt. View had the better record, pulling the biggest upset of the entire tourney with a semifinal win over top-ranked St. Stephens. Mt. View couldn’t maintain their Cinderella run in the championship finals as it lost to repeat champ Shoshoni. Big Piney made the semis but lost to Shoshoni, then dropped the third-place game to St. Stephens on its final day there.
(The Rat’s work for the SW Class C has been a pain. Usually the Rawlins Daily Times was excellent at keeping track of the small schools; not so during the 1962-63 season as a change in the sports department meant for lazier coverage.) At the Class C district tourney in Saratoga, conference champ Rock River earned a bye while Encampment played Medicine Bow and Farson battled Snake River. Medicine Bow won over Encampment in a one-point OT pants-wetter — a direct route to the finals — while the Pronghorns beat the Rattlers to face the No. 1-seeded Longhorns. Rock River won that game easily and then doubled the score on Medicine Bow in the finals. (This should’ve set up a challenge game between Bow and Farson — the two teams hadn’t met in district play — but I can find no indication of that happening like it did in the SW Class A district.) At state, Medicine Bow was two and done. Rock River fared better, losing its opener then defeating two SE teams to take consolation honors.
