Noteworthy Events of the 1961-1962 Season
1. Perfection as Cheyenne Central repeats as champs—It was smooth sledding for Cheyenne Central as the Indians ran the table on the 1961-62 season, a perfect 27-0 mark. The Indians ended University Prep’s win streak in mid-December at 29 straight and finished the season on a 37-game streak of their own. Their championship was truly a dominant one, as only Douglas and Lovell could keep Central’s victory margin to single digits. Working in Central’s favor was a tepid showing from similar-sized schools, as most of the AA schools noodled around the .500 mark for the season.

3. Shoshoni takes Class B in an all-NW final—Most thought St. Stephens or University Prep would return to the Class B finals again, as the two schools often traded the 1-2 ranking in the weekly polls. Prep did shine in the Southeast, although a solid Sunrise team defeated the Buckaroos during the regular season. Big Piney easily won the Southwest regular season but stumbled in SW district play, bowing out first to Cokeville, then to Lyman. Mt. View won the No. 1 SW seed. The Northeast only sent two teams to state, No. 1 NE seed Upton and Midwest. Day 1 of play proved that the Northwest was the state’s top conference as Cowley, Byron and Shoshoni all won. In the quarterfinals, Cowley and Shoshoni took care of No. 1 seeds UPrep and Mt. View while St. Stephens polished off Byron. The semis saw Shoshoni defeat Upton while St. Stephens eked by Cowley. Shoshoni took the championship on Saturday, besting St. Stephens by three, the No. 4 NW seed Wranglers proving all the experts incorrect.
4. Class B all-state tourney selections—

5. Another all-Goshen County Class C final—The Southeast still contained the cream of the Class C crop although Northeast No. 1 seed Clearmont and Southwest No. 1 seed Encampment made convincing arguments that there were other pockets of small school excellence in the state. Clearmont sent Hawk Springs to consolation play while Encampment did likewise to LaGrange, ending the Longhorns’ run of consecutive state tourney victories at 12 in a row. Goshen County teams Veteran and Yoder dispatched Kaycee and Rock River respectively to the consolation bracket, as well. It took Veteran an overtime period to defeat Clearmont while Yoder breezed past Encampment in the semifinals. In an exciting battle between two schools that are separated by 8 miles of Goshen County roadway, Yoder defeated Veteran by a single point for the Class C championship. It was the 10th consecutive state championship for the Southeast district representative.

11. Sunrise at Glenrock—Suffice to say it was a spirited game when the Sunrise Miners visited the Glenrock Herders. The game was tight for three quarters, but then came the final quarter when the home team cashed in 13 free throws stemming in part from the eight technical fouls whistled. To quote the Guernsey Gazette’s take on things: “It is reported that 2 of the fouls were called against the Miners, one against the Sunrise pep club, one against the spectators near the pep club, one against spectators in the gallery, one against critical onlookers in a corner. When this foul was called, [Miner] Coach Rafferty protested that the people were not from Sunrise, so a foul was called on Rafferty.” Rafferty sent his first string to the showers at that point and finished the game with the reserves and Sunrise lost 55-36. Sunrise avenged the loss in late February and again in district play to earn the No. 3 SE seed.
12. Yoder defeats LaGrange for first time in over 20 years—According to the Torrington Telegram, Yoder broke a 22-year losing streak to LaGrange by defeating the Longhorns 58-56 at Yoder in a February game. [A quick check of the Rat’s records has it at 16 ½ seasons. The Bobcats won once in ’44 and once more in ’45.] Still it’s quite an impressive streak of futility. Starting with a late-season loss in the 1944-45 season, the Longhorns won 42 straight games versus Yoder, at home, away and at neutral sites.
13. Wheatland non-protest—Wheatland mentor Jacque Schmiedt protested a call during a game at Cheyenne East played the second weekend of the hoops season. In an account from the Casper Tribune-Herald & Star, “A Wheatland player was shooting a foul shot early in the fourth quarter when the automatic buzzer went off, a contributing factor in his missing the attempt. The official gave the ball to Cheyenne East out of bounds and Coach Schmiedt served notice that he was playing the rest of the game under protest. The coach claimed his ball club should have had either another attempt or be given the ball out of bounds—depending whether the ball had left the shooter’s hands at the time of the buzzer.” The T-Birds won the game 52-44. A week later it was decided that Wheatland would make no formal protest. Platte County school superintendent Lewis Moulton said, “We believe the official made a misinterpretation of the rules, but that can happen in any game.” He went on to say that Wheatland would send a letter to the secretary of the WHSAA explaining its position on the controversy. One wonders whether the coach and his players agreed with the superintendent’s words. Coach Schmiedt issued no further comments on the matter.
14. New Class C conference formed—The Goshen Hole and East Laramie County Conferences merged into one nine-team league, beginning play in the 1962-63 season. The teams had played one another for a number of years, so this was the logical next step for the small schools as both conferences were reduced in size by schools moving up to Class B play or closed by consolidation.

Northeast
Newcastle was the surprise team of the larger schools in the NE, starting slowly in the early part of the season and catching fire from mid-January on as the Dogies posted an 11-1 record. They continued their hot play at the NE district tourney in Casper beating the hosts in the final. Sheridan took third place defeating Big Horn Basin basement-dweller Worland. Byes didn’t help Buffalo or Gillette in district play and both clubs finished the season under .400 in win percentage. At state, Natrona had the bad luck to draw undefeated Cheyenne Central in its opener, which sent the Mustangs to consolation play and an eventual 1-2 record. Sheridan was 0-2 against two SW schools and Newcastle ended at 1-1, winning the opener and losing in the quarterfinals. Worland was 0-2 in state tourney play.
Only two Class B schools represented the NE at state, as the NE Class B ranks were reduced to six with the shift of Big Horn to Class C play. Folks figured it would be bye recipients Midwest versus Upton in the final but someone forgot to tell Sundance. The Bulldogs surprised the Oilers in the semifinals and got to face the Bobcats instead. Upton easily handled Sundance to take the No. 1 NE seed. At state, Sundance was two and done. After a bye, Upton won its first game but lost in the semifinals to the eventual state champ, Shoshoni. With loss to Cowley on Saturday, Upton exited Laramie with a 1-2 mark.
Clearmont posted a stellar record in the Class C ranks, capturing regular season honors and the district championship. Kaycee finished second in both the regular season as well as the district, its first trip to the Big Dance since seeded play began in 1932. Both teams fared quite well at state. Kaycee lost its opener but bounced back to take consolation honors, a 2-1 record. After winning its first game, Clearmont lost in the semis (in overtime) to the eventual champion Yoder. The Panthers won the third-place trophy on the final day, their 20th win of a successful season.

Southeast
Cheyenne Central roared through the season, posting a perfect record of 27-0. The Indians won all but two of their games by double digits and were the dominant force in the polls from the preseason through tourney time. Cheyenne East achieved its first state tourney trip and started well, but had the bad luck of drawing Central in the semifinal game. The T-Birds left Laramie with a 2-2 record. Laramie failed to make the Big Dance for the third year in a row.
Of the Class A-sized teams, Torrington took the SE Conference honors and finished second to Central as hosts of the district tourney. Lusk and St. Mary’s had forgettable seasons and it came down to a fight between Douglas and Wheatland on Saturday morning at district to determine the fourth qualifier for the state tourney. The Bearcats won by two points and became the No. 4 seed that evening with a one-point loss to East. At state Douglas became the Cinderella team, racking up three lopsided wins to make the finals against Central. Midnight struck in the championship as the Bearcats lost by 23.
University Prep was again the cream of the SE Class B crop, snagging both Texas Trail South honors and the SE District championship, the latter for the fifth (and final) consecutive time as the Buckaroos would move to Class A play the following season. Huntley surprised Texas Trail North champs Sunrise in the district semis to play Prep in the final. Sunrise recovered with wins over Glendo and Glenrock to snag the No. 3 seed. At state, Sunrise did best, losing to Cokeville in the opener, ousting Huntley in consolation play and losing to Lyman for the consolation trophy. Huntley finished 0-2 drawing eventual champ Shoshoni in the first round. The opening round bye was no help to University Prep as Cowley bounced them from further tourney play, one and done.
LaGrange saw its string of state championships come to an end but still made it to the Big Dance as the No. 3 SE seed. Goshen County neighbors Yoder and Veteran clashed for all the marbles in SE district play, where Veteran took the championship. Hawk Springs finished as the No. 4 seed in the district, ending Carpenter’s string of consecutive state tourney appearances at three. At state, LaGrange went 0-2 and Hawk Springs made the consolation final, losing to Kaycee. Veteran and Yoder met in the Class C championship game and the Bobcats reversed fortunes, eking out a one-point win over the Eagles. It was the 10th consecutive state championship for a SE District team.

Rat Droppings***The Hillsdale coach found himself in hot water after running an illegal practice session in September. A member of the WHSAA board observed a gym class that was being held indoors due to inclement weather. Coach Phillips had given the class a basketball drill to work on, an illegal act according to rules. The Pioneers were placed on probation for the 1961-62 season.

Northwest
For the larger Big Horn Basin schools it was a typical topsy-turvy season. The BHB Rule of Thumb: Ignore the regular season standings come district tourney time. Certainly the 1961-62 season typifies this best. Of the four top teams at the end of the regular season, only one advanced to the state tourney in Laramie. The No. 7 and No. 8 seeds—Greybull and host Thermopolis—and No. 5 seed Lander all remained standing; in fact, the Tigers repeated as NW district champs. Only runner-up Lovell represented the top tier of BHB teams at state. In Laramie, Thermopolis’ stay was three days, a day two win sandwiched between two losses. Greybull and Lovell both won their openers but lost in the quarterfinals ending their stay in the Gem City with 1-1 marks. (Lovell gave undefeated Cheyenne Central its toughest test all season losing by a scant point. Certainly it was a moral victory for the Bulldogs.) Lander posted the best mark—3-1— at state, copping third place, dropping a semifinal game to Douglas.
Although the pollsters gave the most love to St. Stephens during the season, fellow Class B rivals Cowley, Byron, Pavillion and Shoshoni as well as the Eagles made the upper echelon of the BHB small schools the state’s best Class B conference. At NW district play in Lander, Pavillion was the first to stumble, losing its opener to Byron, then a Saturday morning eliminator to Byron (again). Shoshoni faced Byron in the battle for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds—the NW sent four teams to state—and Byron won that one, as well. In the district championship, St. Stephens shined by whipping Cowley soundly. At state, Byron won its opener and then was eliminated by St. Stephens the next day. Cowley won two games then lost to St. Stephens in the semis. The Jaguars recovered to take third place on the final day. Shoshoni had the good luck not to face St. Stephens until the finals and took the Class B championship trophy by three points over the Eagles. It was the fourth consecutive state championship final for the Riverton school, made tougher this time by having to play three BHB rivals.
Ten Sleep again played in the Class C NE district tourney in Casper. A semifinal loss to Kaycee kept the Pioneers away from Laramie. Ten Sleep played a full Big Horn Basin schedule against Class B opposition, finishing with a 6-10 conference record.

Parity reigned in the SW district as Rock Springs eked out a tight regular-season championship over Evanston and Star Valley with Green River nipping at its heels. The bye the Tigers earned as regular-season champs helped some with a relatively easy semifinal win over Rawlins at the SW district tourney in Green River. The Red Devils rode that momentum into the championship game and took all the marbles with a win—their third of the season—over Rock Springs. Kemmerer surprised Rawlins in a Friday eliminator game and battled Star Valley for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds. The Braves won by four. Best of the batch at state was Star Valley, as the Braves won consolation honors over Evanston. Rock Springs finished 1-1 in Laramie, winning its opener. Kemmerer was two and done.
Big Piney easily won the regular season race for the SW Class B schools. However, the Punchers stumbled at the SW district tourney. They lost first to Cokeville in a semifinal game and again to Lyman in the battle for the No. 3 SW seed to state. Cokeville lost in the SW district final to Mt. View. At the state tourney in Laramie, Cokeville upset a favored Sunrise team, then lost to Upton, exiting Laramie with a 1-1 mark. Mt. View ended up one and done, dropping a quarterfinal game after enjoying an opening-round bye. Lyman fared best of all, capturing consolation honors in a tight game over Sunrise. The Eagles posted a 2-1 record while in the Gem City.
Class C regular-season honors were captured by Encampment as the Tigers breezed through an undefeated conference schedule. Rock River played them close in the final regular-season game and a Tigers/Longhorns final was expected at the SW district tourney in Saratoga. The two schools did not disappoint as both easily won their semifinal games. In the district final, Encampment eked out a one-point win over Rock River. At state, Rock River went 0-2. Encampment won its opener, lost its semifinal game and lost again in the third-place game to Clearmont, a 1-2 mark for the state tourney.
