Noteworthy Events of the 1958-1959 Season
1. Sheridan racks up a hoops championship—So often the championship comes down to the team playing its best ball at state tourney time, and that was exactly the case in Sheridan’s drive to the title. The Broncs didn’t spend many weeks atop the AA/A polls—that was Rock Springs’ privilege—but they were rated top three or four consistently all season long. Cheyenne was expected to contend but did not get the chance. (see No. 10) The Big Horn Basin schools were good but not great as their collective state tourney finish showed. At NE District play, host Sheridan’s offense hit on all cylinders as the Broncs hung up 86 and 96 points on consecutive nights. The Broncs then dispatched Casper Natrona—for the fourth time since late January—in the finals. At state, Sheridan waltzed to the finals with three double-digit wins. This set up a classic final – No. 1 versus No. 2—with Rock Springs. It was a close game, but Sheridan won by six, its first hoops banner for the gymnasium wall. The best Class A team finish was Evanston’s third-place win over Thermopolis.

3. St. Stephens almost runs the table—It had shaped up to be a classic state tourney with powers coming from all four corners of the state to Laramie. In the SE District, University Prep was top-ranked, from the NE was an imposing Upton squad, the NW boasted St. Stephens as the No. 3 crew and Cokeville in the SW had posted another perfect regular season in conference play, although Lyman had upset them in the district finals to secure a first-round bye. Cokeville was the first to fade, losing to Upton. Joining the Bobcats in the semis were the other powers: University Prep, St. Stephens and Lyman. Upton and UPrep battled into overtime with the Buckaroos winning. St. Stephens easily dispatched Lyman. In the finals St. Stephens defeated UPrep by six, capping a 27-1 season, for its first state championship.

5. A repeat winner—It was another championship for LaGrange as the Longhorns continued the SE District’s hold on Class C title trophies. Dubois, the SW No. 2 seed, managed an opening day win over Veteran, which marked the first non-SE school to win a opening round game at the state tourney since Ten Sleep’s 1955 first-round win over Albin. Two SE schools reestablished their dominance the next night in the semis as Carpenter easily dispatched Dubois while LaGrange did likewise to Chugwater. Carpenter had lost twice to LaGrange during the regular season but took the No. 1 SE seed from the Longhorns during the SE District finals. Defending champion LaGrange avenged the district loss and defeated Carpenter in a classic pants-wetter final by a single point for the repeat championship. Chugwater took third and Veteran garnered consolation honors, as the SE teams swept the tourney hardware.

10. Cheyenne ousted from state tourney participation—Since the advent of state tourney play in 1919, the Cheyenne Indians had been a constant presence. That streak of appearances ended at 41 when a technicality arising from district play kept the Indians out of the 1959 state tourney.
Cheyenne had excelled at the SE district tourney in Torrington, dispatching the hosts in the opener and then eking out a two-point win over Lusk in the semifinals to face Douglas in the finals. On Saturday night, the Indians easily won over the Bearcats by 10 points to secure the championship. Laramie bested St. Mary’s earlier in the day for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. That’s where the trouble began.
The two Cheyenne papers ran a letter from Lusk Principal Evan Worley the following Monday, stating that the current format of Class AA and Class A teams was unfair to the smaller schools. He cited Lusk having to play AA Cheyenne on Friday night and then being eliminated by AA Laramie the following morning as an example of the unfairness. His argument was that the two levels should be separated: AA plays AA; A plays A. The argument is a familiar one posited by smaller schools in every classification to current times and was pretty much ignored, save for the two Cheyenne daily papers printing it.
Toward the end of the week, the news came that a meeting of the WHSAA board of control was being held. The reason of the meeting? It was an investigation into the claims that Cheyenne had used an academically ineligible player during the district tourney. After doing their due diligence, the board decided that yes, indeed, Cheyenne had been in error in playing the athlete in question. As a punishment, the Indians would be banned from state tourney play. Cheyenn-igans were out outraged at the decision and made more irate when it was discovered that the complaint came from the aforementioned Principal Worley in Lusk.
Had the state tourney been held the weekend after district play, Cheyenne would’ve probably been part of the state tourney competition. However, with a two weeks’ gap between district and state, there was enough time to determine Cheyenne’s guilt/innocence. Principal Worley had received an anonymous phone call from a Cheyenne resident, alerting him to the possible infraction made by Cheyenne. Worley traveled on that Saturday between tourneys to Cheyenne to confer with Cheyenne principal Merritt Jensen. The infraction was discovered and the WHSAA was informed. On Sunday, the board of control rendered its decision.
Worley was vilified by the Laramie County locals and a game was arranged on Monday between Wheatland and Lusk—the two teams eliminated at district that Saturday morning—which the Tigers won over Wheatland. (The school board in Lusk had, by this time, already notified Coach Tom Kennedy that he wouldn’t be rehired as a coach for the ’59-’60 season. Kennedy, to his credit, did coach his team for the playoff game and at the state tourney.) Oddly enough, Lusk was given Cheyenne’s place as the No. 1 SE seed in the tourney bracket. Cheyenne principal Jensen took the blame for the bureaucratic inattention that allowed the athlete to play.
11. Riverton locker room fight—Coach Art Hill got into a scuffle in the Riverton locker room with one of his players after a game against Casper. The player had been benched because he had violated the dress code about all players wearing ties on game days. The player was normally a starter and no doubt the Wolverines could’ve used his presence in the game, which they lost by three points. Coach Hill went to the player’s home after the game and apologized to him and his parents for his actions. The school principal placed a letter from the school board reprimanding Coach Hill for his actions into his file. Coach Hill was not rehired at the season’s end.

Northeast
Make it two years in a row for the NE to capture a state title in the AA/A classification. Gillette surprised them all in the ’57-’58 campaign and this time around Sheridan did likewise. The Broncs caught fire in latter weeks of January and racked up a 16-1 record from then on to capture AA/A bragging rights. No stranger to statewide football glory, the hoops crown was Sheridan’s first. Only Rock Springs could keep the point spread to single digits during tourney play, and that was in the final game. Casper Natrona sported a new coach, George Collins, whose Thermopolis teams saw plenty of success, but his first year with the Mustangs wasn’t all sunshine. Casper did finish second at the NE regional but was eliminated on Thursday by Coach Collins’ former team, the Bobcats.
It wasn’t to be for the three NE Class A-sized teams. Buffalo, Gillette and Newcastle all posted sub-.500 regular season campaigns. Newcastle did survive district play, defeating Cinderella Basin in the battle for the No. 3 seed. In Laramie, the Dogies split games with fellow Absaraka schools, then dropped their second game to Star Valley, exiting the tourney on Friday.
The Upton Bobcats shined during the regular season and district tourney play, running the table on Wyoming teams and dancing among the top-ranked Class B teams all season long. The Bobcats had the bad luck to draw the No. 1 ranked team, University Prep, in the semifinals and lost by four in a classic game. Upton bounced back to take third on the final day and finished the season at 24-2. Both Midwest and Sundance, the No. 2 and 3 seeds respectively, lasted two days in Laramie, each team winning their first game and dropping the second.
Only four teams squared off for the Class C NE district title and Arvada, regular season champion, took home district bragging rights, as well. Arvada dispatched Kaycee in the district opener while Clearmont beat Ten Sleep. Arvada then defeated Clearmont handily for the championship. In Laramie two weekends later, Arvada was one and two while Clearmont dropped both of its contests.

Southeast
Class AA Cheyenne’s first year under a new coach was a disappointing one. Although the Indians had a winning record, a dismal end to their February games portended more misery to come. Many thought the Indians had righted the ship with their district championship, but their fortunes ended there, as it was determined that they had fielded an ineligible player and were banned from state tourney play. It marked the first time in 41 years that a Cheyenne team was not included. Laramie finished third in district completion and lasted three days at state, ending its run on Friday with a 1-2 record.
Class A teams Douglas and Lusk were ones to watch at district tourney time and the Bearcats impressed, making it into the championship game. Lusk was eliminated on Saturday morning after giving Cheyenne a scare in the semifinals, a two-point loss. St. Mary’s made it to the game for the No. 3 and 4 seeds for state, losing to AA Laramie in a one-point squeaker. When the aforementioned difficulties with Cheyenne were decided by the WHSAA board of control, Lusk and Wheatland squared off, with the winner replacing Cheyenne in Laramie. Lusk won and got the trip to the Gem City. The Tigers lasted two days, posting a 1-1 mark. The Gaels were 0-2, also finished on Thursday.
Class B University Prep kept its Texas Trail Conference record perfect for the second straight year, defeating Glenrock in the conference championship game. The two teams met again in district play in Torrington and the result was the same, with the Buckaroos taking first place. The No. 3 seed was Lingle’s, as the Doggers won two eliminator games on Saturday to qualify. At state, University Prep was again denied a championship trophy in the finals, losing to St. Stephens. Glenrock and Lingle dropped their first-round games but managed to win in consolation play and faced each other for consolation trophy honors. The Sheepherders won their fourth game of the season over the Doggers to secure the prize.
The SE district had the toughest Class C teams although Dubois did manage a first-round win to make the semis. Pundits predicted that Carpenter and LaGrange would be the favorites as each team took the regular season conference honors for their respective leagues. LaGrange took two wins from Carpenter in the regular season, while the Coyotes avenged those losses with a district title over the Longhorns. Chugwater underachieved during the regular season but caught fire during district play and took the No. 3 seed over Veteran. Veteran was given a play-in game with Snake River on the Wednesday of state and took the final spot. The predictions held true to form as LaGrange and Carpenter made it to the finals. This time LaGrange was the big winner, Carpenter the runner-up. Chugwater took third while Veteran garnered consolation honors, another impressive showing by the teams from the southeast.

Rat Droppings***Although the Indians won the SE District championship, Cheyenne lost a decision by the activities association’s board when it was determined that their roster contained an ineligible player. As a result, Cheyenne was not allowed to participate in the state tourney. Wheatland and Lusk played a game to replace Cheyenne’s spot in the 16-team state tourney bracket, which was won by the Tigers.

Northwest
There’s never easy sledding in the Big Horn Basin and the ’58-’59 season was no different. In Class A, Thermopolis had the inside track early in the season until a three-game losing streak in February opened the door for Greybull to take conference honors. At the NW district tourney in Thermopolis’ new gym, Greybull, Riverton, Lovell and Thermopolis squared off in the semifinals. Greybull easily handled the Wolverines while Lovell sent the Bobcats packing to consolation play. Thermopolis emerged with the No. 3 seed besting No. 4 seed Lander. Lovell and Greybull staged a typically classic district final with the Buffaloes winning a squeaker.
At the state tourney in Laramie, both Greybull and Lander lost their openers, then advanced in consolation play to the championship where Greybull took also-ran honors. NE No. 4 seed Basin also lost its opener, then was eliminated by Greybull, exiting tourney play with an 0-2 mark. Lovell and Thermopolis both won their initial games, but the Bulldogs had the bad luck to draw eventual state champion Sheridan in the quarterfinals, leaving Laramie with a 1-1 record. Thermopolis lasted all four days, losing to Rock Springs in the semis and then dropping the third-place game to Evanston, a 2-2 outcome for the Bobcats’ effort.
It was St. Stephens’ turn to shine in Class B play as the Eagles damn near ran the table, save for a road loss in Pavillion, a 27-1 mark for the season. Cowley, Pavillion and Shoshoni had excellent regular seasons, too, but only two of that trio (along with St. Stephens) could qualify for the state tourney. Byron, which had surprised Shoshoni in the NW district opener in Cody, faced St. Stephens in the semis while Pavillion and Cowley battled it out in the other game. Cowley and St. Stephens both won by the identical 48-44 score to make the finals and qualify for state. St. Stephens won a low-scoring final for the No. 1 seed. Byron and Shoshoni won Saturday morning eliminators and squared off, again, for the No. 3 seed. Shoshoni won by a single point for the No. 3 slot. At state, Shoshoni went 0-2, while Cowley split a pair of games. St. Stephens made a magical run with two easy wins and a six-point victory over University Prep in the finals, the Eagles’ and coach Bill Strannigan’s first state championship.
In Class C, Ten Sleep competed in the NE District, finishing third at the Sheridan tourney. Dubois competed in the SW District, qualifying for state at the Saratoga SW District tourney. At state the Rams won their opener—the first non-SE team to do so in years—but then lost their next two games.

Rat Droppings***Basin’s January win at Powell was the Bobcats’ first Big Horn Basin Conference win in over three years, a string of 48 consecutive conference defeats. The Bobcats “lost” a coin flip to Powell and had to make the trip to Sheridan for district play. By finishing fourth at the NE District tourney, Basin made its first trip to the state tourney since WWII, wrapping up quite the year for the perennial Big Horn Basin doormat.

Southwest
Rock Springs was ranked near or at the top of the statewide polls during the entire season and was a definite favorite to take it all come tourney time. The Tigers had only two losses during the regular season, both tight games on the road to Big Six schools. At the district tourney in Green River, Springs got a scare from Evanston in the semis and breezed past Kemmerer in the fight for the No. 1 SW seed. At the state tourney, Rock Springs battled its way into the finals, dropping the game to state champion Sheridan by six. Rawlins’ return to the Class AA ranks was forgettable, as the Outlaws placed fifth in the conference and only won one game in SW District play.
Parity reigned among the Class A-sized schools as Star Valley, Evanston and Kemmerer took turns defeating each other and distanced themselves from Green River and Class A newcomer Jackson. In SW District play, Evanston lost to Rock Springs in the semis while Kemmerer surprised Star Valley in a one-point win. Evanston and Star Valley eventually met each other in the No. 3 and 4 seed game, with the Braves winning by a slim two-point margin. At state, Kemmerer had the shortest two-game stay, being eliminated by Star Valley in consolation play. Star Valley lost its opener but bounced back the next three games to garner consolation honors. Evanston had the bad luck to draw eventual state champion Sheridan in the semis but won on Saturday in the third-place game, defeating Thermopolis.
Cokeville breezed to another Class B regular-season championship, posting a second undefeated regular season in SW conference play, a streak of 34 consecutive wins. Lyman pulled the upset in district play however, defeating Cokeville by three in an overtime final. Superior bounced back from a second-round loss to Lyman to capture the No. 3 SW seed, eliminating Hanna on the final day. At the state tourney in Laramie, Cokeville (1-1) and Superior (0-2) were eliminated by Thursday. Lyman made it to the semifinals where the Eagles lost to eventual champion St. Stephens. On Saturday, Lyman lost to Upton in the third-place game.
Dubois captured the Class C regular season with only one loss, that to the Utah member of the conference. Rock River was the next-best Wyoming team with four losses to Wyoming conference foes. At Saratoga, those two teams eventually squared off in the SW District finals, with the Longhorns surprisingly eking out a close win over the Rams. Snake River took consolation honors, which earned them an invite to the Class C play-in game against Veteran on the opening day of the state tourney. The Rattlers lost that game to the Eagles. Rock River went 0-2 in Laramie, but both were tight losses, one in overtime. Dubois surprised with an opening round win—usually the purview of the SE schools—but then lost to Carpenter in the semifinals and Chugwater in the third-place game.

Rat Droppings***Bow lasted half a season before hanging it up. They started the season with six or seven players and were competitive in most of their games. I’m suspicious of the forfeits to Manila, UT and Dubois. Even though the Class C standings list Bow with 14 losses, the Dubois yearbook mentions no forfeit wins and probably rescheduled other teams as the Rams’ schedule shows the allowed maximum amount of regular season games without Medicine Bow added in. The Class C standings are probably the work of an enthusiastic sports editor. (Manila’s schedule, published in the Green River paper, showed no dates with Medicine Bow, either.) I’m not counting the Manila or Dubois forfeits although they are counted in the standings at the top of this section.
