Noteworthy Events of the 1957-1958 Season
1. Gillette surprises the field, another Class A champion—Gillette’s championship was certainly a shocker. In the two statewide polls that kept track of the AA/A teams, the Camels were ranked No. 10 in one and were unlisted in the other. Cheyenne and Rock Springs were the odds-on favorites, but the two AA teams met in the semifinals—the activities association filled the AA/A bracket by a blind draw again—while Gillette faced conference foe St. Mary’s in the other semi. Gillette topped Cheyenne by five in the finale, spoiling Okie Blanchard’s swan song as the Indian mentor. It also signals the rise of the Absaraka Conference—in its second year—as rival to the Big Horn Basin circuit, which was generally considered to be the top Class A competition in the state.

3. A familiar Class B winner—There were some stellar Class B teams. University Prep almost ran the table on a perfect season, posting a 24-1 mark. Out west, Cokeville excelled, dropping only two games to Class A Star Valley during the regular season and sweeping the conference with an 18-0 record and district title. But when all was said and done, Cowley was there to repeat as state champions. The Jaguars finished behind Byron during the regular season and barely took third at district. But the final weekend in Laramie was a perfect 4-0 as Cowley won all its games by seven points or more. The Jags handled Cokeville in the semis and an illness-riddled University Prep in the finals, spoiling the Buckaroos’ chance at a perfect season.

5. Another SE winner in Class C—Again the SE teams were the ones to beat in Laramie. After besting all four SW and NE teams on day one—Burns had won a play-in game the day before—the SE teams again paired off in the semis. LaGrange topped Burns while Albin bested Veteran in the semifinals. LaGrange, which finished third in SE District play, caught fire in Laramie and easily topped Albin in the final contest, the school’s first state championship.

10. A 12-team bracket for Class B; no change for the AA/A bracket—The state activities association wisely expanded the Class B bracket to 12 teams. Winners of district play were awarded first-round byes to the quarterfinals. The byes helped University Prep and Cokeville, but Deaver and Moorcroft both lost their quarterfinal opener and were one and done in Laramie. Plenty of griping came from the Class AA/A coaches about the blind draw for the 16-team AA/A bracket. Four of the five AA teams ended up in the same half of the bracket. Just Sheridan of the Big Five competed in the other half and the Broncs were eliminated by Gillette in the quarterfinals.
11. Gillette/Sheridan brouhaha—The aforementioned Gillette win was sweet revenge for the Camels as Sheridan had easily handled Gillette twice during the regular season. The second game of the season in Sheridan left a bad taste on the Camel faithfuls’ collective palate.
An Associated Press article in mid-February stated that Gillette would not schedule any more basketball games with Sheridan because of its objections to officiating provided by Sheridan at its home games. Campbell County school board president Harris Swartz blamed “home town” refereeing at Sheridan and said that the scheduling ban would remain in effect “indefinitely. Due to the unpleasant and unfair conditions our basketball teams have encountered on the Sheridan floor, and more especially Saturday night, February 8.” He added that the officiating had been “going on for three years.” The Sheridan board president J. R. Hylton could see no reason for such action and had requested Gillette make “specific complaints.” We’ll see what the ’58-’59 season brings…
12. Okie bows out—C.H. “Okie” Blanchard had announced that the ’57-’58 season would be his final one, and the Cheyenne Indians tried their hardest to make Coach Blanchard’s curtain call season end with another state championship. After an opening weekend loss in Colorado, the Indians ran off 24 straight wins but dropped their final game to Gillette in the state finals in Laramie. The state’s greatest basketball coach will pen one more page to his hoops coaching resume in about a decade. In the meanwhile, he “retires” to his activities director position within Cheyenne High School.
13. Reshuffled for the 58-59 season—Rawlins will move back to Class AA, forming the ‘Big Six’ once again. Jackson and Kemmerer will become Class A schools (the Rangers had been playing in Class A although they were a Class B-sized school.) Class B-sized Basin would continue to play in Class A while Class C-sized Deaver and St. Stephens would continue to play in Class B.
14. Barioil’s junior high team—The Rawlins Daily Times had fun with the Bairoil Junior High basketball team during the winter. Because there were so few boys playing ball, the team added some female classmates to the squad. Betty Weeks and Wanda Worley—two of them, there may have been others—both made points for the Bairoil squad. In fact, Ms. Weeks was often among the team’s top scorers. Bairoil did win some games during the year, a season made possible by the inclusion of girls to the roster.

Northeast
In the NE Class AA/A, three teams had a fair chance at a state title: Casper, Sheridan and Gillette. Swede Erickson’s Mustangs were a streaky team, sloughing off a moribund February showing and getting hot in time for NE district play in Newcastle. Sheridan had a red-hot February and posted wins over both of the other two NE contenders. Gillette carried an Absaraka Conference title into district play and had lost only twice since Jan. 1. Casper eked out a NE district title with a two-point win over Gillette. Sheridan, which had lost to Gillette in the semis, took third with a win over Buffalo. At state, Cinderella Gillette took it all, upsetting Sheridan in the quarterfinals, then besting two Laramie County teams, St. Mary’s in the semis and Okie Blanchard’s Cheyenne Indians in the finals. Casper took consolation honors at state, Sheridan finished 1-1, and Buffalo was 0-2.
With the addition of Big Horn to the Class B, seven teams formed the bracket for the district tourney. Midwest had taken Powder River Conference honors for the regular season, followed by Upton and Sundance. The Oilers’ first-round bye—the same thing occurred the year before—may have hurt their chances as they played a poor semifinal game against Moorcroft, losing by eight. Exiled to consolation play, Midwest took the No. 3 seed by defeating Sundance on Saturday. Upton and upstart Moorcroft squared off for the NE district championship and Moorcroft surprised again, taking the No. 1 seed by double digits. At state, both Midwest and Upton lost their openers but survived to meet in the consolation final. The Oilers won handily over the Bobcats. Moorcroft received an opening round bye for the 12-team bracket, then lost to eventual champion Cowley, finishing 0-1 and done.
In Class C, Ten Sleep was again sent over the mountain to play in the NE district. [Again there was no NW district as Class C sized Dubois played in the SW district again, while Class C-sized St. Stephens played in the Class B tourney.] Arvada defeated Kaycee while the Ten Sleep crew easily handled Clearmont. In the district finale, Ten Sleep won a squeaker over Arvada to take the No. 1 seed. Arvada squared off against Burns for the final spot in the Class C bracket the day before the state tourney officially began for Class C play. Burns took a four-point win and Arvada’s season was concluded. Ten Sleep lasted all three days at state, easily taking consolation honors over fellow displaced NW team Dubois.

Southeast
Cheyenne was one of the top-rated teams in Class AA/A all season long. After losing one game on the opening weekend, the Indians damn near ran the table, notching 24 straight wins against all comers, including a district title in Torrington over Laramie. No doubt the Indians wanted to win it all for Coach Blanchard, who had announced that this campaign would be his final one. The Indians made the finals with three close wins in Laramie but came up short against Gillette on Saturday night. Okie, Wyoming’s greatest hoops coach, had yet to write one more final chapter, but that would take more than a decade to come to light.
Three of the five SE teams in the Class A Absaraka Conference were weak as Douglas, Lusk and Torrington all posted sub-.500 records. St. Mary’s was awarded the first-round bye at the district tourney by virtue of the Gaels’ two wins over Wheatland. Laramie bested St. Mary’s in the semis while Cheyenne did likewise to Wheatland. After winning Saturday morning eliminators, St. Mary’s topped Wheatland the game for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. At state, host Laramie was eliminated by Cheyenne on the second day, and the same fate befell Wheatland as the Bulldogs dropped their fourth game of the season to St. Mary’s. Eventual champion Gillette knocked the Gaels to the third-place game (which they lost to Rock Springs) in the semis.
All eyes were on Class B University Prep as they carried a 22-0 record into the Class B state tourney. The Buckaroos were top rated by the pollsters and had emerged unscathed winning a two-point pants-wetter in the district final against Glenrock. The Class B bracket had been expanded to 12 teams and Guernsey surprised by taking the No. 3 seed, shocking favorites Lingle and Glendo in consolation play. At Laramie, Guernsey went 1-1, losing on Thursday to Cokeville. Glenrock had the poor luck to meet UPrep in the semis and the Sheepherders lost their third game of the season to the Buckaroos, and then lost in the third-place game. With their star center out of the tourney—he’d been hospitalized with pneumonia prior to the tourney—the Buckaroos’ chance at a perfect season was torpedoed by Cowley in the finals.
Regular season winner of the East Laramie Conference, Carpenter, lost its top scorer before district play in Huntley and lost more games there than the Coyotes did all season. Goshen Hole co-favorite Ft. Laramie lost to red-hot Burns in the opening game and couldn’t survive consolation play. For those that did survive, it was another sweep by the SE in the opening round of the Class C tourney as Burns, No. 3seed LaGrange, SE district champion Albin and No. 2 seed Veteran all won against opponents from the NE and SW. (Burns had won a play-in game against Arvada the day before to fill out the eight-team bracket.) In the semis, LaGrange defeated Burns and Albin bested Veteran. LaGrange easily won it all on Saturday over favored Albin. Veteran topped Burns for third place.

For the largest Big Horn Basin schools, Thermopolis seemed a shoo-in for the favorite role, notching 13 straight conference victories to begin the season. Mid-February brought two consecutive losses, and many figured the Bobcats’ chances at the district tourney in Powell had slipped a notch or two. Upstart Lovell caught fire at district and sent the hosts to consolation play in the first round, then turned the trick against Lander in the semis in a double-overtime squeaker. Thermopolis squeaked by Worland in its opener, easily handled Cody in the semis and took the championship over Lovell in the finale. Powell won over Lander for the No. 3 and 4 seedings. A blind draw determined the state tourney pairings, most going against the NW schools. Powell was out in two losses to AA-sized schools. Thermopolis lasted a game longer, but both its losses were to AA schools, as well. Lovell cooled off in Laramie eliminated by Lander, an 0-2 record. Lander fared well after losing its first game, lasting all four days before losing in the consolation finals.
Byron ran off a stellar 17-1 record during the regular season, its only loss dished out by defending state champion Cowley, which finished 15-3. Both were figured as finalists for the district tourney in Lander. Each school made the semis against teams that tied for third in the conference—Byron facing St. Stephens and Cowley taking on Deaver. Byron dispatched the Eagles but Cowley lost to the Trojans. After winning eliminators, Cowley took the No. 3 seed from St. Stephens by two points. Deaver upset Byron to take the No. 1 seed and earning an opening bye in the state tourney bracket. In Laramie, Byron lost a close one to top-ranked University Prep after winning its opener, ending at 1-1 for the year. Deaver lost its first game to Glenrock and was done, 0-1 at state. Cowley pulled the upset of the tourney by defeating University Prep in the finals, stopping its 24-game win streak, and defending its state championship, a stellar 4-0 run in the Gem City.
Dubois played in the Class C SW conference and fared well, finishing second to Rock River. No doubt the Rams were helped by hosting the district tourney, as well. Dubois finished second there, earning the trip to Laramie. Unlike the year before, Ten Sleep played an independent schedule against Class B competition, mostly. They made no trips over the pass to play the NE schools until tourney time. At the district tourney in Newcastle, the Pioneers took first with wins over Clearmont and Arvada, the latter a two-point victory. At state, both Dubois and Ten Sleep lost to SE schools, but won their Friday games against SW schools and squared off for consolation honors on Saturday. Ten Sleep won over Dubois to claim the trophy, a nice ending for both NW Class C schools.

Southwest
In the ranks of the larger schools, Rock Springs went through the season listed at or near the top of the polls, buoyed by a stellar record against larger out-of-state schools and a perfect record against teams from the SW. A lopsided loss against Cheyenne in late January was the Tigers’ only loss versus Wyoming competition heading into SW district play in Green River. After a first-round bye, followed by a narrow win over the hosts, Star Valley took the No. 1 seed in another tight win over Rock Springs. At state, the Tigers made it to the semifinals, where Cheyenne topped them again. On Saturday, Rock Springs took third place over St. Mary’s.
Star Valley was the best of the Class A teams, posting a perfect record against all Wyoming teams except Class AA Rock Springs. Their upset of the Tigers at district in Green River must’ve been sweet revenge. The host Wolves were sent to consolation play after their semifinal loss, likewise with Rawlins. Evanston surprised Rawlins in an elimination game while Green River did the same to Kemmerer. In the battle for the No. 3 and 4 seeds, Green River easily handled Evanston. At state, Green River lasted the longest, posting a 1-2 mark. Evanston was 0-2, being eliminated from play by Green River on Thursday. Star Valley won its first game but dropped its quarterfinal contest, 1-1 and done.
Cokeville’s run through the SW Class B season was exceptional as the Panthers posted a perfect 18-0 record in the tough SW B conference. Lyman, Jackson and Mt. View were next in the conference standings. At the SW District tourney in Green River, Cokeville had the easiest run to the championship, winning two laughers after earning the first-round bye. Jackson and Lyman staged a classic semifinal game with the Broncs winning by one point. Mt. View, sent to the consolation bracket by Cokeville, battled through to the consolation finals where the Buffalos faced Cinderella Reliance, which had bounced Lyman in an eliminator. Mt. View easily handled Reliance to sew up the No. 3 seed. Cokeville continued its perfect run by winning the finale easily over Jackson. At state, both Mt. View and Jackson were two and done by Thursday evening. Cokeville posted a 2-1 record after the opening-round bye. The Panthers lost to eventual state champion Cowley in the semifinals. On Saturday the Panthers took third place, defeating Glenrock.
The Class C regular season ended in a tie between Farson-Eden Valley and Rock River, as the two schools split games during the regular season, each winning at home. SW District play was held in Dubois—a Big Horn Basin site—and five teams battled for three spots at the state tourney as Encampment opted not to play in the tourney. Elk Mountain was the first team eliminated followed by Baggs, which lost to Farson in the battle for the No. 3 seed. Host Dubois squared off against Rock River in the finals—Dubois had defeated the Longhorns the previous day—and lost to Rock River the second time around. At state, all three teams lost their opening game to a SE school. Rock River and Farson were each eliminated by the end of Friday’s play, the Pronghorns losing to Dubois. Dubois lost in the consolation finale, to fellow NW school Ten Sleep.
