Noteworthy Events of the 1956-1957 Season
1. Seeding brouhaha—The AA/A state tourney brackets were traditionally filled by a “hat draw” and the 1956-’57 drawing left the AA coaches moaning and groaning as four of the Big Five—all district champions— ended up on the same side of the bracket. Cheyenne opened the tourney against Casper Natrona, then potentially play Rock Springs in a quarterfinal pairing (which happened) and then face Sheridan in the semis (which didn’t happen). All four AA coaches registered complaints with the activities association, but the die was cast and the best the association could do was to promise to reconsider the matter for the 1957-’58 season.
2. An A champion instead of an AA one—Cody worked its way through that lopsided bracket that had the four AA schools in its way. The Broncs dispatched Star Valley in the opener, NE champion Sheridan in the quarterfinals, SW champion Rock Springs in a double-overtime semifinal, and eked out an overtime championship over Powell in an all-Park County final. First-year coach Charles Parsley was one and done in Cody, moving away at season’s end, leaving a championship banner on the gymnasium wall.
3. Class AA/A all-state tourney selections—

Lander—Willie Trosper
Powell—Jerry Nielsen
Rock Springs—Joe Carter, Richard Scott

4. A couple of additions to Class B—Glendo moved up to Class B play and found the competition to its liking as the Eagles qualified for the state tourney in Laramie. Dayton and Ranchester consolidated in the NE and the two schools’ combined population also meant for a move to Class B. As with Glendo, the new Tongue River school found success in the move, qualifying for state and taking consolation honors.
5. Cowley does it again—Cowley continued its remarkable run as the Jaguars made the finals at state for the fourth consecutive year. The Jaguars slowly built up momentum through the regular season to play their best come tourney time. Byron won the regular season Big Horn Basin title, but Cowley took district honors with a win over Byron in the finals. At state, Cowley defeated Lingle in the opener, bested Byron again in the semis (apparently the Class B bracket was determined by a “hat draw” too) and put up a then-record 77 points against Upton to take the championship.

7. Southeast schools again dominate Class C—Southeast Wyoming had the vast majority of Class C sized schools, and the competition there was furious all season long. Albin won the East Laramie Conference while Chugwater did likewise for the Goshen Hole Conference. Chugwater found the going tough at the SE district, dropping games to East Laramie county schools Carpenter and Hillsdale, the No. 2 and 3 SE seeds, respectively. Albin took the SE District honors and Chugwater was luckily awarded the at-large berth to the state tourney. All four SE teams made the semis and Chugwater and Albin won Friday to make the finals. Albin took home the bacon in overtime on Saturday, the fifth consecutive year the Class C champ was from the SE.

11. Stalling—A game between Casper Natrona and visiting Laramie featured one of the longest occurrences of stalling that this scribe has run across. Leading 31-22 at halftime, the Swede Erickson-coached Mustangs took the third quarter tip and guard Bob Bolles was passed the ball and then waited in the backcourt for the Plainsmen to come out of their 2-3 zone. Occasionally a Laramie defender would make a run at Bolles who would pass to teammate Dave Coleman who would return the ball to Bolles once the defender fell back into their zone coverage. Laramie players followed their coach Vern Jensen’s orders and stayed in the zone, chatting with each other and nearby fans. With 17 seconds showing on the clock, Natrona finally began to attack the Laramie zone and Bolles eventually canned a shot from the top of the free throw circle with two seconds left in the quarter. The Casper paper described the length of the stall at 7 minutes, 43 seconds in length. Normal play ensued in the fourth quarter, each team scored a dozen points and Casper walked off with a 45-34 win.

Northeast
Sheridan took three of four from Natrona, split 2-2 with Cheyenne and swept Laramie during the regular season and was considered a state tourney favorite, along with No. 1-rated Rock Springs. The Broncs’ record at the NE district in Gillette was solid proof, with three lopsided wins, topping Casper in the finale by double digits. Class A Newcastle—0-3 against Sheridan for the season—sprung day one’s biggest surprise by winning in a walk over the Broncs. Sheridan was done by Friday, exiting with a disappointing 1-2 record. Casper did win on day one over Cheyenne, but was bounced from the tourney in the second round, losing to Rock Springs.
Class A Newcastle and Gillette, the No. 3 and 4 seeds from the NE, did better than their AA NE counterparts. Newcastle lost in the second round after its Cinderella win versus Sheridan, posting a 1-1 mark in Laramie. Gillette made a solid run, lasting all four days. The Camels won their first two games in Laramie, lost to Powell in the semifinals and lost to Rock Springs in the game for third place, certainly the highest finish for a NE school of this size. St. Stephens and Basin from the NW were added to the NE district tourney in Gillette. Neither was a huge factor as the teams combined for a 1-4 mark during the regional.
Class B Upton and Midwest tied for the Powder River Conference honors and both received byes for round one of the NE district tourney. The newcomer to Class B competition, Tongue River, was a tough semifinal opponent for Midwest and eliminated the Oilers in a tight semifinal game. Upton had an easier time with Sundance to make the finals. Tongue River took care of the Bobcats on the final night of district play with another win. At state, both teams excelled. The Eagles took consolation honors, racking up a 2-1 record in Laramie. Upton’s record was identical to Tongue River, but their loss occurred in the finals, losing to perennial championship contender Cowley, the best-ever showing of NE Class B schools to this date.
Class C play during the regular season was decimated by the consolidation of Dayton and Ranchester into Class B Tongue River. Rozet didn’t have enough to field a team, so the four remaining NE schools played each other four times during the regular season. Big Horn took the Powder River Conference championship for the regular season. Ten Sleep again played in the NE district tourney as there were only two teams in the NW (Dubois again played in the SW district tourney). Having played five games against NE competition during the regular season, Ten Sleep won the NE district in a breeze, defeating Big Horn handily in the finale. At state, Ten Sleep managed consolation honors, going 2-1. Big Horn was two and done by the end of play on Friday.

Southeast
For the largest schools in the SE, it was a disappointing year. It was an un-Okie-like year for Cheyenne, the perennial championship contender ever since Coach Blanchard took the reins after WWII. Laramie’s record was worse, although the Plainsmen managed a regular season W over the Indians, stopping a lengthy losing streak against the Indians. The AA schools did finish first and second at the SE District Tourney, but both logged a 1-2 record at state, exiting on Friday evening.
Class A St. Mary’s won the regular season in the SE, but it was Douglas and Torrington that finished as the third and fourth seeds, respectively, at the district tourney in Torrington. In Laramie, both were done by Thursday as the Bearcats dropped two in a row while the Trailblazers managed a 1-1 mark, winning their opener.
In the Class B Texas Trail league, Lingle won the regular season honors in a close race with Sunrise and—new to the ranks—Glendo. The Eagles dispatched the Miners in the semis of district play while Lingle did likewise to University Prep, champs from the 1955-56 season. Lingle won in a laugher the next night over Glendo. Neither team enjoyed their abbreviated stay in Laramie for the state tourney. Both were 0-2, Lingle losing to teams from the north while Glendo dropped theirs to SW teams.
In spite of the less-than-successful plight of the larger SE schools, the SE Class C reigned supreme across Wyoming again. At the district meet in Torrington, Goshen Hole Conference champion Chugwater faced Carpenter in one semifinal while East Laramie Conference champion Albin battled Hillsdale. Carpenter scored the upset while Albin defeated Hillsdale. The following night Albin won easily from Carpenter while Hillsdale edged Chugwater for the No. 3 seed. The district only qualified three teams, but Chugwater received the at-large bid from the state athletic association. At state, all four SE teams qualified for the semifinals and Albin eventually won the whole shooting match, the finale being a tight OT win versus Chugwater.

It’s hard to find a better year for the Big Horn Basin teams than the 1956-’57 campaign. Two state champions, one runner-up, one third place and one consolation honor came from the seven teams that qualified for Laramie.
In Class A, Powell and Thermopolis shared regular-season honors with Cody a game behind. In typical BH Basin fashion, none was crowned NW District champion as that honor went to Lander as the Tigers defeated three teams with 10 conference wins to take all the marbles. Cody finished second while Thermopolis topped Powell for the No. 3 seed. At state, Cody and Powell marched through three close games to square off, an all-BH Basin finals. The Broncs won in OT over the Panthers. Thermopolis and Lander finished the week at state at 0-2.
It was not a huge surprise for hoops pundits to see Cowley and Byron back at state, their presence there as common as cold March wind in Laramie. Byron won the regular-season crown, splitting its two games with Cowley, each winning at home. Cowley took the NW District from Byron in the finale, winning by six. At state, both teams were on the same side of the bracket, which meant a semifinal pairing after their first-round wins. Cowley doubled the point spread from the district tourney and won by 12. Byron won the third-place game the following afternoon, easily besting Superior. Cowley topped Upton with a (then) finals record 77 points against the Bobcats.
Ten Sleep had no NW Class C competition as the only other team, Dubois, was included in the SW District and played a full SW schedule. Ten Sleep was sent to the NE District Tourney in Gillette—it had played five games versus NE competition during the season—and took first place, winning over Big Horn in the finals. At state the SE teams dominated as usual, as all four teams won in the first round. Ten Sleep managed to win the next two games in consolation play, defeating Snake River and Rock River for the trophy, a 2-1 showing in Laramie.

Southwest
Rock Springs strung together the state’s longest win streak of the year—19 games—from January to mid-March. Only a double overtime loss to eventual state champion Cody in the state tourney semis—their only loss to a Wyoming school—kept the Tigers out of the state championship game. Rock Springs rebounded the final day to take third place over Gillette. Conference bottom-dweller (and district host school) Green River surprised with a second-place SW District finish. The Wolves continued their hot play in Laramie, making their way to the consolation finals, dropping that game to the No. 3 SW seed, nemesis Star Valley. Rawlins, the No. 4 SW seed, was two and done in the Gem City.
In Class B, the state activities association wanted Saratoga and Hanna to play their district games in the NE district tourney, but when four SW schools threatened to not schedule the two Carbon County schools during the season—a potential loss of eight regular season games for the Panther and Miners—the board relented and said that the two schools could continue regular season play in the SW and attend the SW tourney in Green River. Superior and Cokeville were the top two seeds at district, based on their 1-2 finish during the regular season. Cokeville lost its opening game to Jackson, however, and Saratoga then defeated the Teton County school in the semis. Superior won over Saratoga in the district finals. At state, both teams lasted all three days. Superior won its opener, lost in the semis and lost in the third-place game. Saratoga dropped its opener, won its second game and lost in the consolation finals, a 1 win-2 loss state tourney record for both schools.
Class C Rock River breezed through the regular season undefeated while Baggs was a solid runner-up in the conference standings, which earned both schools valuable byes at the district tourney. Each won their semifinal game easily and met in the SW District finals, although this time it took the Longhorns an overtime to defeat the Rattlers. Baggs went 0-2 at state while Rock River lost in the consolation finals to Ten Sleep, in a one-point heartbreaker.

The forfeit to Elk Mountain was because of “disciplinary reasons” and the Laramie-bound Rattler crew was minus six players at state tourney for “breaking training rules.” The Rattler crew competed in the tourney with a total of seven players, only three who played in the SW District tourney.

Rat Droppings*** Dubois was 1956-57’s most snakebit team. The Rams’ gymnasium had burned down the season before so they only had a handful of “home” games at St. Michael’s gym in Ethete. Due to a lack of Class C teams in the Big Horn Basin, the Rams opted for a full schedule of games in the SW, Farson being the nearest at 120-some miles.
