Noteworthy Events of the 1955-1956 Season
1. Changes in Class AA/A—No new teams were added to the large school classifications but there were a few changes come district tourney time. Rather than contest a NW District play-in game, the ninth-place team was sent over the Big Horns to the NE district tourney in Gillette. Lovell finished at the bottom of the Big Horn Basin and made the journey east. Douglas, which had played in the 1955 NE tourney, was moved back to the SE for tourney play. When all was said and done, the Big Five schools excelled in district play, taking first (Cheyenne and Casper Natrona) and second (Rock Springs, Laramie and Sheridan).
2. Okie wins another—The Cheyenne Indians atoned for their 1955 state tourney finals loss to Casper Natrona with a two-point victory over Swede Erickson’s Mustangs. Cheyenne dropped only two games to out-of-state teams—both avenged— during the regular season but had one other close call during state tourney play, that being a two-point win over Star Valley in the quarterfinals. The best Class A finisher was Cody, which lost by two to Laramie in the game for third place.
3. Class AA/A all-state tourney selections—

4. Changes in Class B—The Class B ranks swelled with the addition of Moorcroft in the NE, Manderson, Meeteetse and Morton in the NW, as well as Big Piney and Superior being added to the SW. Regular season champs were Pine Bluffs, Lingle and University Prep in the SE, Upton in the NE, Byron in the NW and Jackson in the SW. Lingle was eliminated in SE district play and Upton was upset by Midwest in the NE. At state, the semifinals saw Pine Bluffs facing University Prep while Cowley squared off with longtime foe Byron [the seeding process needed some tweaking]. The Buckaroos handled Pine while Cowley finally hung one on Byron, the Eagles’ first Class B loss of the season. Prep took the state championship the next night in a close game with the Jaguars.

6. Changes in Class C—Given that there were only two remaining Class C teams in the NW, Ten Sleep was shipped over the pass to NE district tourney while Dubois was sent packing to Green River and the SW. It didn’t matter all that much because the SE corner of the state was where the strength of the Class C was located. That was proved the first day when all four SE teams won, their opener, including Albin’s (an at-large entry) upset of undefeated Dayton, ensuring that the state championship trophy would remain in the SE. LaGrange beat Carpenter in the semis while Veteran handled Albin. Veteran won its third championship in a four-year span on Saturday, an easy win over LaGrange. It marked the first time all three state championship trophies stayed in the same geographical area: The SE—Veteran, University Prep and Cheyenne.

9. All-State Teams—The week of the state championship the Associated Press released its All-State teams (there is no mention of how the teams were selected.) This squad is different from the squads listed above in that teams that didn’t qualify for state still could include their best players. For example, Hubert Friday from Lander was chosen. Lander was upset in NW district play, but Friday set several Big Horn Basin scoring records and if a book is ever written about Native American basketball players in Wyoming [are you listening Randy Tucker or Owen St. Clair?], then Mr. Friday would constitute at least a chapter, one of the true greats.

10. Peyton’s Place—Rock Springs coach Mack Peyton’s suspension resulting from his actions at the 1955 AA/A state tourney—he refused to substitute for a player that had fouled out, finishing the game with four players—continued to play out across the sports pages and courtrooms of Wyoming. The ultimate question was this: Did the Wyoming School Activities Association have the power to dictate to a school board who could coach the students of that community? Is it local control or state interference?
Certainly Coach Peyton had not feathered his nest. The WSAA listed seven incidents that were contrary to “good sportsmanship, cooperation and the cultivation of ideals of friendship”—basic tenets of the Association. The incidents included heated arguments with referees, displays of temper that resulted in broken glass [water bottle, door window] along with verbal and physical confrontations with fans.
However, Rock Springs rehired coach Peyton for the 55-56 hoops season, which forced the issue. The one-year suspension stated that Peyton could coach the team in practice situations but he could not be in the gym for games. Rock Springs’ first two games were in Utah in mid-December. First to blink was the WSAA, which granted Peyton a temporary reprieve which allowed him to be on the bench for the Utah games. The Rock Springs school board had filed suit against the WSAA, with hopes that the hearing would be completed by the time Rock Springs played their third game against Rawlins on Dec. 21. As things dragged somewhat, Peyton’s assistant coach took the reins for the Rawlins game, the only game Coach Peyton would sit out as things came to fruition.
When events looked like a district court hearing would settle the matter, an out-of-court settlement was brokered the final week of December. In it Coach Peyton would apologize to the official—Casper’s Mike Mahoney— that was working the state tourney game in question. In turn the Association would agree “to take no action with respect to any conduct on the part of any coach of any school unless, and until his school district shall have been requested to take appropriate action and shall have neglected or refused to do so.” Essentially it was more of a loss for the activities association. Local control took precedence over actions from outside agencies.
11. “I see nothing…” —On a March night in Torrington, the Trailblazers eked out a close win over the Laramie Plainsmen. Guard Bob Hankins sank a long, one-handed set shot with four seconds left. Laramie coach Vern Jensen claimed the ball, while being inbounded to Hankins, had hit a basket brace, which would’ve meant a turnover and a Laramie possession. Neither referee saw the ball hit anything, and one walked over to the scorer’s table and asked the timer if the ball had hit the brace. The timer refused to comment. The official then declared there was no turnover and the basket was good. Final score: Torrington 57, Laramie 55.

1955-1956 NE District
Of the two NE AA schools Casper Natrona had the better season, posting 3-1 records over Sheridan and Rock Springs. AA SE power Cheyenne, however, was too much for the Mustangs as the Indians went 4-0 during the regular season versus Casper and eked out a two-point win in the state championship game, ending Swede’s attempt at back-to-back state titles. Sheridan never quite found its mojo during the regular season but fared well in district play, finishing second. Two weekends later in Laramie the Broncs were 0-2 and gone from further tourney action.
Class A Gillette and Newcastle finished first and second in regular season competition, although the Dogies attained a measure of revenge at district play in Gillette, taking the No. 3 seed from the Camels. Both teams posted a 1-2 mark in Laramie, as Gillette had to face two AA teams to begin with, besting Rock Springs and dropping a close one to Sheridan. Newcastle faced A only competition, losing to Cody but beating Evanston. Both teams were eliminated on Friday, losing close games to Big Horn Basin schools.
The Class B Midwest Oilers went through a ho-hum regular season and were not expected to go beyond district play, but someone forgot to tell them, apparently. The Oilers caught fire and won their district opener versus Sundance, somewhat of a shocker since the Bulldogs had won both regular-season games. In the finals, Midwest easily defeated Upton and became the sole NE entrant at the state tourney in Laramie. The Oilers had the bad luck to draw the eventual state champions in round one, dropping the game to University Prep. Another loss on Thursday sent the Oilers homeward.
All eyes were on Dayton as the Elks carried a 17-game winning streak into the state tourney, undefeated in regular-season play. Also representing the NE in Laramie was Ranchester, which finished second in Powder River play. That the two teams faced each other in the district finals was no huge surprise, although Arvada and Ranchester had split their regular-season games. Ranchester dispatched Arvada handily in the semis while Dayton struggled to beat Ten Sleep. [Ten Sleep was moved to the NE district as the NW had only two Class C teams, the Pioneers and Dubois. Dubois played in the SW district tourney.] Dayton won consecutive game No. 17 over Ranchester on Saturday. At Laramie, both teams lost their openers to SE schools, but still lasted all three days, eventually meeting in the consolation championship, which Dayton won. The Elks finished their final season at 19-1.

Cheyenne bounced back from its bridesmaid 1954-55 season to the top of the AA/A heap. Okie’s Indians were undefeated against Wyoming competition and avenged their two losses with comfortable wins over the two schools that managed to hang a loss on them. Cheyenne didn’t play Big Five schools Rock Springs or Sheridan during the regular season, which softened their schedule somewhat. In district play, Cheyenne won all its games by double digits. At state, they had two two-point wins over Star Valley in the quarterfinals and Natrona in the finals. Laramie, hampered by Cheyenne’s dominance in the SE, finished second at district and in third place at state, the best finish by a Plainsmen team since WWII.
The best Class A team in the SE was Torrington, which won the conference title and finished third in district play behind the two big city schools of the SE. The Trailblazers ran off 12 straight wins from late December to mid-February including an impressive win (in Chadron!) over the Prep team that had been undefeated since 1954. Wheatland managed a fourth-place seed at districts. At state both teams won their first game and lost close ones in the second round, the Bulldogs to eventual runners-up Natrona and the Blazers to Cody (the Broncs qualifying for the third-place game on the final day.)
Three Class B teams shared the conference title: Lingle, Pine Bluffs and University Prep. A coin flip broke the tie and Pine Bluffs won, meaning with first-round district tourney wins, Prep and Lingle would square off in the semis, while Bluffs would have a less formidable semifinal opponent. Since only two teams would represent the SE at the state tourney, the semifinals meant everything. All teams won as predicted, and the Buckaroos and Bulldoggers squared off, with UPrep winning by five. The Hornets had an easier time reaching the finals besting Guernsey easily. Prep won a close one to take the district championship. At state Class B in Laramie, the SE was approaching parity with the two perennial NW powerhouses, Cowley and Byron. Pine Bluffs lost to Byron for third place, while University Prep eked out a tight win over Cowley for the Class B championship.
The 12-team Class C SE district tourney bracket contained the state champion, but it was anyone’s guess which team it would be. Carpenter and Veteran won their conference championships, but Albin and LaGrange had defeated their conference champ to merit second place. All four teams earned first-round byes at the district tourney in Torrington, and all four teams made it to the semifinal games, where Veteran dispatched Albin while Carpenter did likewise to LaGrange. LaGrange battled back to take the third-place seed from Hawk Springs (which had eliminated Albin in a Saturday morning eliminator.) Carpenter took a close game from Veteran for the championship. Albin received an at-large bid for the state tourney. All four teams won their opener at state. In the semifinals, Veteran easily bested Albin while LaGrange took Carpenter by four. Carpenter rebounded to take the third-place game from Albin. Veteran repeated as state champions easily handling LaGrange, its third in four years. It was another 1-2-3 sweep for the SE.

Northwest
It was a year of parity in the Big Horn Basin with the conference championship being decided on the final weekend of play, de rigueur for BHB schools. The question remained Are any tough enough to dethrone the AA’s stranglehold on the AA/A championship? First off, which four teams would survive the district tourney in Powell to make the trip to Laramie? [Last place Lovell was shipped over the Big Horns to the NE district tourney in Gillette.] Basin provided the first upset, knocking co-champ Lander to the consolation bracket, while the hosts were upset by Thermopolis. In the semis, Cody defeated Worland while Thermopolis continued its run, besting Basin. In consolation play upstart Greybull and Worland eventually squared off for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, with the Warriors winning easily. Thermopolis then atoned for a so-so regular season, walking off with the championship. At state Cody, Worland and Thermopolis lasted all four days, the latter two squaring off in the consolation finals, an easy win for the Bobcats. Cody made the championship semis, losing to eventual champs Cheyenne. The Broncs dropped a close decision in the third-place game, losing by two to Laramie. Greybull was two and done at state.
A trio of former Class C schools was added to the NW Class B ranks, the “M” schools Manderson, Meeteetse and Morton. None of the three was in contention for the Basin conference championship, although Manderson did post a .500 record, the best of the three. Byron continued to be the powerhouse, going through the season undefeated. Burlington challenged Cowley for the No. 2 spot in the conference coming up a game short. During the district tourney semis, Byron dispatched Morton while Cowley did likewise to Burlington. Only two teams from the NW would attend state, and to no one’s surprise, it was state tourney regulars Byron and Cowley, with Byron easily taking the No. 1 seed. By some curious seeding at state, Byron faced Cowley in the semis. Cowley won a close game in the upset of the Eagles, finally defeating them to improve their season record versus their archenemy to 1-3. The final day, Byron easily won the third-place game over Pine Bluffs while Cowley took second place, losing to champs University Prep.
Being that there were only two remaining Class C schools in the NW, Ten Sleep was moved to Gillette and the NE regional while Dubois faced similar-sized schools in the SW regional at Green River. Both teams did well in district play, with Ten Sleep finishing third, losing to undefeated Dayton by one in the semis. Dubois took second in Green River, as they benefitted from scheduling several SW schools during the regular season, something Ten Sleep didn’t do. Dubois found the going rough in Laramie, posting an 0-2 record.

Southwest
Rock Springs certainly kept the headlines in the initial month of the season due to their school board’s battle with the state activities association concerning the latter’s ban from coaching [during games] for Mack Peyton. Will he be on the sidelines? was the subject of many an article in early December, but Coach Peyton was only absent that second weekend—he was on the sidelines the initial weekend— for a game against Rawlins. The Tigers played decent ball finishing second for the regular season and district tourney to Star Valley. At state, Rock Springs was two and done, posting a 1-1 record.
The Class A portion of the SW was Star Valley versus the rest as the Braves breezed to the conference championship and eked out district title over Rock Springs by a basket. Evanston posted a sub-.500 regular season but qualified with surprise wins over host Green River in the first round and Kemmerer in the consolation semis. Facing Green River again for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, Evanston stayed close but lost to the Wolves by four. At state, none of the three Class A teams lasted beyond two days. Evanston and Green River went 0-2 while Star Valley was 1-1, the loss a two-point defeat by eventual champion Cheyenne.
For Class B, Jackson took the regular season championship, dropping only two games of the 18 scheduled conference games. Lyman, Hanna and Mt. View finished with double-digit wins, as well. At the Green River district tourney, Reliance and Saratoga were eliminated in play-in games to reduce the bracket from 10 to eight. Jackson, Mt. View and Lyman all made the semis as expected, however Pinedale sent Hanna packing to consolation play in an upset. The two Uinta county teams made the finals with Mt. View edging Jackson and Lyman easily ending Pinedale’s championship chances. Lyman won the finale by two over Mt. View. Jackson took the No. 3 seed with the consolation championship. Mt. View and Lyman met again at state in consolation play, with Lyman winning again and sending Mt. View home with an 0-2 record. Jackson and Lyman met for the consolation championship on the final day, another easy win for the Eagles.
Lacking NW Class C teams to play, Dubois was added to the Class C district tourney and took second place, as the Rams were no doubt helped by scheduling several SW teams during the regular season. Dubois hadn’t faced Rock River until the district finals, but gave the Longhorns a close game. Both finalists were bracketed into the state tourney, but neither Dubois nor Rock River could last all three days, each posting 0-2 marks.
