Noteworthy Events of the 1954-1955 Season
1. A slight tweak in the AA/A tourney—The Big Five schools did enough griping the season before to effect a change in the district tourney format. Class AA would not have a district tourney on its own. Rather, the Big Five schools would be bracketed into the district tournaments with the Class A-sized schools, a return to how things were set up in the 1950-51 hoops season. The entire Big Five benefitted from this new setup as Cheyenne, Casper Natrona and Rock Springs all won district tourney titles and Sheridan (third), and Laramie (fourth) also qualified for the state tourney.
2. As a result—The AA/A tourney ended up with two Big Five teams in the finals, Casper Natrona and Cheyenne, which was hardly a surprise to anyone. Cheyenne spent much of the season atop the polls and posted a 8-2 regular season record versus fellow AA schools. Casper Natrona’s relatively easy win over Cheyenne in the finals was somewhat of a shock, but Coach Swede Erickson had his Mustangs playing their best at the right time of year. It was Erickson’s only state title, but his Casper College teams would set the standard in junior college play for Wyoming for decades to come. For the Class A schools, Thermopolis and Torrington made the semis and played each other for third place on the final day, a win for the Trailblazers.
3. Class AA/A all-state tourney selections—
Cheyenne—George Dubois; Boyd Dowler
Evanston—Richard Chappel
Gillette—Eddie Ross
Lusk—Jim Sturdevant
Casper Natrona—Mike Tipton; Bill Browning
Powell—Corky Blevins
Thermopolis—Terry Bunche

4. In Class B—The ranks of Class B schools changed somewhat as Sunrise, Burlington and Reliance were added to the grouping. (Big Piney moved down to Class C competition. Manville was closed, consolidated with Lusk, a controversy that could still get your nose punched in No. 14 county to this very day, some 60-plus years after the fact.) Pine Bluffs, Hanna, Midwest and Cowley were the Class B regular season champions in the various corners of the state, although only the Oilers and Jaguars could manage district tourney titles as well. Perennial state tourney overachiever Cowley proved their mettle in Laramie by dispatching scrappy Midwest in round one by three points, Big Horn Basin foe Deaver in the semis and Pine Bluffs in the finals. The final two victories were both by double digits. It was the second state title during the 1950s for Cowley, their fourth appearance in the finals for the decade.
5. Class B all-state tourney selections—

6. And in Class C—As much as the Big Horn Basin schools ruled the Class B ranks, the southeast corner of the state maintained its stranglehold for hoops teams among the state’s smallest schools. Carpenter and Veteran won their respective regular season conference titles as did Rock River in the southwest. Dubois (14 straight) and Dayton (18) carried long winning streaks into district play, but Dubois was upset in the NW finals by Ten Sleep, and they stayed home instead of making the trip to Laramie. The Dayton Elks won the NE district to stretch their streak to 21 but stumbled at state, two and done. The southeast stepped it up however, as Veteran dispatched Ten Sleep in the semis, while LaGrange did likewise to Carpenter. Veteran won its second title on the final day by easily defeating LaGrange, while Carpenter took the third-place game from Ten Sleep, another 1-2-3 finish for the SE schools.

9. Coaching behavior—The WHSAA had to address several incidents of questionable behavior by coaches (and at times, their teams) during the season, such as:
A. Rozet—Mustang coach L. E. Self pulled his team off the floor a few seconds before the close of the first period in protest of the officiating. Apparently his star player had been whistled for his third foul in a tight 14-12 game at the time and Coach Self removed his team at that point. The WHSAA placed Rozet on probation and possible suspension for “unsportsmanlike conduct.” Kaycee was awarded a 2-0 forfeit win. And Rozet managed to get through the season with no other strikes on their record, winning one and losing two in district tourney play.
B. Cheyenne/Rock Springs brouhaha—Things had been strained between coaches Okie Blanchard and Mack Peyton since the year before, when Rock Springs successfully appealed/reversed an Indian win on the Rock Springs court. The two schools declined to schedule weekend double headers for the 1954-55 season—evidence of more strain—a departure from the previous four years’ worth of scheduling. Fast forward to late January of 1955 when the Indians again visited Rock Springs and departed with a 47-28 victory over the Tigers.
Accounts are sketchy from Cheyenne and Rock Springs newspapers, but apparently it was a hard-fought contest, with plenty of physical play and negative banter from both benches. The WHSAA received several complaints about the game, although not from the coaching staffs of either school. The board of control censured both schools warning that any further “unsportsmanlike conduct” will result in more drastic actions being taken. Principals of both schools said that precautions were being taken to avoid a repeat when Rock Springs visited Cheyenne at the end of the regular season and indeed, nothing happened to make matters worse. Both coaches felt the situation was “overblown” and Coach Okie defended his players, saying the actions of his players were “never out of line.” However, there were later implications with the…
C. State tourney censuring of Star Valley and Rock Springs—Concerning their coaching conduct, Braves’ coach Vern Gardner and Tiger coach Mack Peyton were censured by the WHSAA board of control after the state tourney in Laramie was completed. Gardner was put on probation for a year while Peyton, already having one strike against him, was still allowed to coach the Tigers but could not be in the gymnasium during any of Rock Springs’ actual games for the 1955-56 season. (The two schools did not play against each other at state; the incidents were separate.) It was likely the Rock Springs school board would appeal the decision which was handed down in mid-March. Peyton’s appeal would end up in Wyoming’s legal system the following season. Stay tuned.
10. Gaels dodge a bullet—Driving his car home from a game with Torrington, coach Marvin Strauch of St. Mary’s hit a patch of icy road on a curve, swung off the road and rolled over twice into the barrow pit. Five team members and their team manager were passengers in the car. Three were hospitalized and the Gaels’ leading scorer required four stitches on his right hand. Coach Strauch spent a night in the hospital but eventually had enough of his team ready for their district tourney games the following week. Unfortunately their two opponents were Cheyenne, the eventual seocond-place finisher at state and Torrington, the third-place team at state. The season ended for St. Mary’s then and there, sad but grateful they avoided what could’ve happened.
11. Cue ominous music—The Union Pacific Coal Company announced the closing of its Reliance mines as of the end of January 1955, “due to the lessening market demand for coal.” Since early December in 1954, 760 miners had been laid off in the Rock Springs area. Night shifts in the Hanna and Superior mines had been laid off at that time. The switch from coal-fired to diesel-powered train engines was probably a huge reason, a detail that goes unmentioned in this item gleaned from the Rock Springs paper.

Northeast
Swede Erickson and his Natrona County Mustangs took it all in 1955. NCHS was not the favorite heading into the postseason, as Cheyenne had won three of four regular season games between the two schools. Tourney play proved to be the motivator for the Mustangs as they blitzed through district play with ease. Fellow AA school Sheridan finished as the No. 3 district seed, upset in the opener by Newcastle. At state AA/A, Lovell was the toughest opponent for NCHS as the Mustangs won an overtime squeaker and then eliminated Sheridan the following day. The last two wins were comparative breezes over the past champion Thermopolis and nemesis Cheyenne.
Gillette won the A/B Powder River Conference regular season title and earned a first-round bye as did Buffalo at the district tourney. Natrona easily bested Douglas—the Bearcats being moved to the NE to balance bracket play—and Newcastle eked by Sheridan. The Dogies defeated the host Camels in OT the following night and saw their Cinderella run end under the hooves of the Mustangs in the finals. Gillette finished as the No. 4 seed, losing to the Broncs. At state AA/A, both Newcastle and Gillette went 1-2, being eliminated on Friday of the four-day tourney.
A simple four-team bracket constituted Class B play in Gillette and Midwest, as it had demonstrated during the regular season, was the best of the batch, having posted a 6-0 combined record versus Hulett, Sundance and Upton. District play was no different, as the Oilers won both games easily, besting Hulett first and Upton in the finals. At state Class B, Upton was eliminated in two games while Midwest lasted all three days, losing a close one to eventual state champ Cowley, defeating Glenrock in consolation play and losing another close one to Hanna in the consolation finals.
Dayton ran off 18 straight regular season games, the longest streak in the state as teams entered district play. The number stretched to 21 with three more wins, although Arvada and Ranchester gave the Elks close games in the district semis and finale. At state Class C, LaGrange ended the Dayton win streak in the opening round and Rock River sent the Elks home on day two. Ranchester fared about the same, losing to eventual champion Veteran in the opener and to Albin the following day, a disappointing end for the smallest NE schools.

The WHSAA stepped in and at fist declared the game a tie, with a playoff game to be scheduled at a later date. They later reversed that decision, abiding by the signed scorebook instead.

Southeast
The deck was reshuffled again as the Big Five/AA teams were moved back into AA/A district play rather than contest their own AA district. To no one’s surprise, four of the Big Five were ranked in the top six come tourney time, so in effect the larger schools were the tail wagging the dog. The fairness of the classification structure took a giant step backward to the status quo of the 1950-51 season, where the smaller schools again had to contend with the big-city schools at a district level. At the district tourney in Torrington, No. 1 ranked (statewide, that is) Cheyenne breezed to the championship with three victories, all by double digits. Laramie found the going somewhat tougher at district, with two losses to Class A teams, but still managed to qualify with a fourth-place finish.
Class A teams were relatively even as each took turns besting the other. (Douglas—listed as a SE school since the bulk of their games was with the other SE teams—was moved to the NE for district play.) Wheatland won enough games during the regular season to merit the first-round bye, which placed them in Cheyenne’s bracket for the semis. Lusk surprised after a so-so regular season with two wins to qualify for the finals and sure enough, it was Okie’s Indians that the Tigers had to face. Host Torrington managed a third-place finish and Cheyenne took all the marbles. At state, host Laramie was done in two games as was Lusk, each winning in the first round and losing in the second. Torrington made the semifinals, losing to Cheyenne. On the final day, Trailblazers took third-place honors and the Indians were runners-up to Swede Erickson’s Natrona Mustangs.
Sunrise, Glenrock and Pine Bluffs were the top three Class B teams in the SE. Although Pine Bluffs won the regular season conference championship, the resultant bye for the district tourney in Torrington might have been a negative, as the Hornets won by a single point over Lingle (while Glenrock defeated Sunrise) during the semifinal round, then Pine lost by a single point to Glenrock in the finals. At state, Pine Bluffs atoned for its lackluster district performance by soundly defeating Hanna and Cokeville to reach the finals. A state championship was not to be, however, as Cowley again had postseason success, continuing a Jaguar tradition. Glenrock was two and done in the Gem City.
A 12-team bracket—Sunrise had been moved to Class B play at the season’s start—meant for quite the district tourney in Torrington as at least three teams would qualify for state. [It turned out to be four SE teams, eventually.] First- and second-place teams in the Goshen Hole and East Laramie conferences earned first-round byes and champs Veteran and Carpenter, along with Albin and Chugwater, gained an extra day of practice. The byes were no help to Chugwater and Albin as both teams lost on Thursday, but Veteran and Carpenter excelled, winning then and on Friday to set up the championship finals. Albin battled back to the third-place game, winning four elimination games to take third, the last W versus Hillsdale. Carpenter and Veteran staged a classic championship with the Coyotes taking first by two points, the Eagles’ first loss to a Class C school. Both Hillsdale and LaGrange had lost their Saturday morning eliminators so both were in consideration for an at-large berth. [LaGrange, with a slightly better overall record, got the nod, maybe because Hillsdale had received the at-large bid the year before.] At state, the SE flexed its muscle, taking the top three spots and the four teams lasted all three days. Veteran defeated LaGrange for their second Class C title, Carpenter took third and Albin lost to Rock River in the consolation championship.

Class A Thermopolis breezed through the regular season with only two losses, a full three games better than second placer Lovell and Cody could muster. At the district tourney in Powell, the host Panthers caught fire and surprised with a first-place finish, quite the change from their ho-hum regular season. The Panthers faced Lovell in the finals, having sent favored Thermopolis to consolation play in the semis. Thermopolis battled through the Saturday morning eliminators as did Lander. The Bobcats eked out a two-point win over the Tigers to take the third seed. At state, Thermopolis made its yearly deep run, losing to Casper in the semis and Torrington the next day in the game for third place. Powell maintained its momentum—after a first round loss—to take consolation honors in a close game with Lovell. Lander posted a 1-1 mark, losing on the tourney’s second day.
Traditional Class B power Cowley had smooth going in all three elements of a typical hoops season. The Jaguars breezed through the Class B portion of their regular season undefeated. In district play, Cowley had two easy games to take the No. 1 seed with wins over Shoshoni and Deaver. At state, Cowley dispatched Glenrock first, conference rival Deaver in the semis and blew away Pine Bluffs in the finals for the state Class B championship. Deaver made it to the third-place game, losing to Cokeville on the final day.
Dubois was the hard luck team of the Class C ranks and maybe the entire state. The Rams breezed through the regular season undefeated in conference play and was certainly a favorite to represent the Basin at the state tourney. It was not to be, however, for at the district tourney Dubois lost to Ten Sleep in a two-point heartbreaker in the finals. Since that district of the state only sent one representative to Laramie, the Pioneers earned the privilege. Hopes for the at-large berth awarded by the activities association went to LaGrange—the fourth team from the 12-team SE bracket—and the Rams’ season was over a week too soon. LaGrange did finish second at state but the Longhorns’ January and February record wasn’t anywhere as impressive as the Dubois effort over the same span of time.

Southwest
Certainly the southwest part of the state had better years as the 1954-55 hoops season was pretty much one to forget about, especially at the AA/A level. Star Valley had the best regular-season record, splitting with Rock Springs and sweeping its other Class A competition. The district tourney in Green River had several upsets, the first being Evanston’s upset of Superior on the first day. The host Wolves did likewise in the semis, dispatching Star Valley to the Saturday morning eliminators, setting up an all-Sweetwater County finale, Green River versus Rock Springs. Evanston and Star Valley scrapped through to the third-place game and the Braves righted the ship by taking the No. 3 seed. Rock Springs easily won the district championship. At Laramie all four AA/A representatives were two and done, easily the poorest showing by big-school SW teams since 1932.
Hanna emerged as the regular-season champion in the Class B ranks. Cokeville managed to split its games with the Miners and was placed on the opposite side of the eight-team district tourney bracket as the second seed. The semis featured the Panthers versus Reliance (a Class B newcomer) and the Miners against Lyman. Cokeville won a one-point squeaker, while Hanna breezed by the Eagles. Cokeville again won another one-point pants-wetter against Hanna on the final day. Unlike their area AA/A schools, both Cokeville and Hanna lasted all three days, with the Panthers taking third place and the Miners capturing consolation honors.
Only one Class C team from the SW was allowed at the doings in Laramie as only five teams made it to the end of the season (Medicine Bow’s season ended around the beginning of February.) Rock River was the sole team to post a regular season record above .500 and the Longhorns took district bragging rights as well, although Big Piney played them close in the finals. Rock River lasted all three days in Laramie, eventually taking consolation honors over Albin.
