Noteworthy Events of the 1949-50 Season
1. Parity Reigns—It was an oddity that the conference champions weren’t also the champions in three of the four districts. In the northeast, Newcastle earned the No. 1 seed, yet just made state by finishing fourth. For the northwest, co-champs Lovell and Lander ended up in second and third to red hot Thermopolis, which upset both teams. Reliance was the dimpled darling in the southwest but their state tourney plans were scrapped by Rock Springs and Rawlins. Only Lusk in the southeast managed to win both the conference championship and eked out a fabled—well, in #14 county at least—one point win over Cheyenne for the district championship. It was anybody’s tourney in Laramie for the state championship. Which team was playing their best in mid-March? Mack Peyton’s Rock Springs Tigers. They squeaked by Cheyenne in the semis with a two point win and easily handled Lovell in the finale.
2. Make That Three in a Row—Byron won their third consecutive championship with a perfect record against Class B opponents, 16-0 during the regular season [although I can only verify 14 Class B wins] plus seven district/state tourney wins. At Laramie, the Eagles had smooth sailing through the first rounds with three easy wins. Only the final against conference nemesis Cowley was close, a four-point win. Coach Wilford Mower certainly ranks among the all-time greats in Wyoming prep coaching, be it in football or basketball.

4. Sportscasters and Writers—All State Tournament team—The press and radio picked their own All-State tourney team, as they were somewhat put off by the “All Senior” designation to the team chosen by the coaches and officials. They reasoned that some underclassmen deserved merit as well. Only Rhone and Eliopulos were unanimous choices. Only one underclassman made the top ten—junior Jimmy LaFleiche of Lovell—although many juniors (no sophs or frosh) received honorable mention.

5. Coach of the Year—The Laramie Daily Bulletin started naming prep basketball’s “Coach of the Year” the season before by tabbing Reliance’s Jack Smith, who led his Pirates to the runners-up finish at the Class A state tourney of the 1948-1949 season. For the 1949-1950 season, Lovell mentor Chet Christiansen was named recipient of this honor, as his Bulldogs also finished second at the Class A tournament in Laramie. Other coaches considered for the honor: Mack Peyton, Rock Springs; Joe Schwartz, Rawlins; Earl ‘Shadow’ Ray, Casper Natrona; John Bays, Midwest; Bill Bush, Lander; Sid Werner, Wheatland; Jim Weir, Green River; and Brad Erzinger, St. Mary’s.
6. War in Worland—Casper Natrona was scheduled to play two games against Worland on a December road trip to the Big Horn Basin. The Mustangs were putting the finishing touches on an easy victory over the Warriors. Casper’s Darrell Hougham and Worland’s Jack Vannoy scrambled for a loose ball and Vannoy dislocated his knee in the scuffle. Vannoy’s father leaped from the stands and struck Hougham with a fist. Casper coach Shadow Ray left the bench to rescue his player and the two were immediately mobbed by spectators. Worland coach Charley Roberts rescued Ray from the mob while Natrona assistant coach Bill Reese hauled Hougham to the locker room. Order was restored and the final 90 seconds of the game were played. The Mustangs won 39-28.
Through the years basketball has had many dustups and brawls—Malice in the Palace, Minnesota vs Ohio State’s brawl turned riot, and quite recently the Kansas/Kansas State brouhaha—and thankfully, most prep ones are never subject to press coverage. And the Rat is willing to bet almost every school has a tale of boys being boys, caught up in the emotions of the moment, getting carried away. [Girls, too. As a coach the Rat had a player expelled from a middle school game for fighting.] In the Worland/Casper Natrona incident, the teams cancelled the second game in the series and the Mustangs cut short their road trip to the Basin. Teams in Wyoming rarely schedule the same team on consecutive nights nowadays and the Rat wonders if this change in making schedules maybe got its start with this game.
7. Top Ten—Prior to the start of the state tourney, the United Press/Laramie Daily Bulletin had the following teams listed as the state’s top ten fivesomes:

Northeast
Newcastle breezed through the regular season, dropping their only conference game at the end of February. The Dogies did not schedule Casper Natrona yet received a first-round bye for the tourney at Gillette’s new gym. Semifinalists were Casper versus Midwest and Sheridan facing Newcastle. It was a night of upsets as the Oilers won handily over the Mustangs and the Broncs toppled the Dogies. Casper Natrona and Newcastle won Saturday eliminators and squared off for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. Casper won easily. Midwest took the Class A championship with an easy win over Sheridan.
The Class B tourney favorites boiled down to three teams that registered double-digit conference victories: Big Horn, Ranchester and Clearmont. The trio of teams made the semifinals along with Hulett. Big Horn easily dispatched Hulett in one semi while Ranchester eked out a close one versus Clearmont. Clearmont worked its way through a Saturday morning eliminator and grabbed the third (and final) seed with a big win over Dayton. Big Horn won by six over Ranchester to grab the Class B trophy.
It was another disappointing finish for the seven northeast schools at the state tourney in Laramie. In Class A best of the lot was Casper Natrona, which won consolation trophy honors. Midwest lasted all four days as well, losing in the fourth-place game to Rawlins. Newcastle and Sheridan both won their openers, but dropped their next two to exit the tourney on Friday. For Class B, Big Horn lasted all four days, losing in the fourth-place game. Ranchester and Clearmont were two and done in the Gem City.

Rat Droppings***The Jan. 11 issue of the Sheridan Press ran the article, “Ralph Keene, Former Coach, Is Found Dead.” It reported on the suicide of Coach Keene of a gunshot wound through his chest. His body was found by his brother who was visiting from South Dakota. Keene and his wife had recently separated prior to the start of the year. He had coached at Deadwood, S.D., Powell and Sheridan prior to his tenure in Clearmont. His football team at Sheridan won the mythical state crown in 1946 in a close game over Cody in the first Casper ‘Turkey Bowl.’ His Clearmont Panther basketball team won the northeast district tourney in 1948. (No mention of his tragic death appears in the 1949-50 Clearmont yearbook.) He left behind a widow and two children. A coroner’s inquest ruled the shooting a suicide in the Jan. 19 issue of the Press.

Rat Droppings***Mumps hit the six man Buckaroo hoops squad. A Buffalo Bulletin article mentioned, “Kaycee Basketball Team Out of Order –Kaycee high school’s basketball team—composed of five players and one substitute—is out of commission this week.
Kermit Coates, one of the six available ball players, suffered a badly sprained ankle and will be unable to play for a while. Now three members of the five remaining are down with the mumps.
Consequently, Kaycee’s schedule will have to wait until more of the players return for duty. The remaining two have their fingers crossed that they won’t catch the mumps about the time the rest of the boys report back for practice.”

Southeast
The first weekend of March the seven Class A teams met in Wheatland to send four teams to the state tourney in two weeks’ time. Lusk was handed the first-round bye as their record was slightly more impressive that Cheyenne’s. (The two teams did not meet during the regular season.) Parity ruled the rest of the conference as only two teams posted conference records at .500. First-round winners joining Lusk were St. Mary’s, Torrington and Cheyenne. Lusk easily won over the Gaels and Cheyenne dispatched the Plainsmen to set up the finals between the Tigers and the Indians. Wheatland and St. Mary’s squared off for the third- and fourth-place seeds, and the hosts were victorious. In the championship, Lusk and Cheyenne staged quite the battle, with the Tigers winning by a single point. It was the first time since the ’42-’43 season that a team other than Cheyenne had won the district. [The game ranks easily in Lusk’s top five victories of all time.]
The following weekend in Cheyenne, 20 Class B teams met in a 35-game double elimination tourney to choose the top five teams for the state tourney. Lingle, the East Central Wyoming Conference winner, and runner-up Glenrock were afforded byes, as well as East Laramie County Conference champ Pine Bluffs and Goshen Hole Conference victors LaGrange. Semifinalists were three of the above—Lingle, Glenrock and LaGrange—and one surprise, Sunrise. Lingle and Glenrock won to make the finals, a replay of the previous season’s district tourney finals. This time Lingle won it all with Glenrock taking the No. 2 seed. Sunrise and LaGrange played each other for the third and fifth seeds with the Miners taking a close win. Huntley and Burns played through the plethora of consolation bracket games to play for the No. 4 seed and Huntley won by a basket. The ECWC teams took the top three seeds, Goshen Hole teams the final two slots, and the ELCC was shut out from state tourney play.
At the Class A state tourney, Cheyenne did the best, bringing home the third-place trophy. Lusk, St. Mary’s and Wheatland were all two and done, sent packing by Thursday night. For the Class B teams, Huntley played the best by taking home consolation honors over Sunrise. Lingle, Glenrock and LaGrange all lasted three days, posting 1-2 records. The southeast corner just didn’t have the ponies to compete with the northwest powerhouses, going 0-3 versus Byron and Deaver.

Northwest
Like the majority of the districts around the state, the conference champions/favorites failed to take home the Class A district championship. Lovell dominated the Big Horn Basin early in the season and two mid-February losses enabled Lander to tie them for conference bragging rights. But upstart Thermopolis surprised Lander in the semifinals and dispatched Lovell in the championship game. Lander and Cody squared off for the No. 3 and 4 seeds with the Tigers taking an easy win from the Broncs.
Class B held true to form as Byron blasted through the conference schedule undefeated and did likewise at the district tourney, polishing off Deaver by double digits in the finale. Deaver had handled a tough Cowley squad in the semis, but the Jaguars won a Saturday morning eliminator and then bested Burlington by two points in the battle for the No. 3 and 4 seeds.
The Big Horn Basin teams shined at the state tourney in Laramie. In Class A, Lovell made it to the championship tilt, taking the runners-up trophy. Lander lost in the match for third place. Cody lasted three days while Thermopolis was two and done. For Class B, Byron won its third straight state championship by four points over Cowley, a repeat of the previous year’s title game. It marked the fourth straight year that the Class B championship banner went to a team from the northwest area of the state. Deaver played for third place, losing to Mt. View. Burlington lasted only two days, being eliminated by Friday.

Heading into the tournament in Green River, Reliance was the No. seed and quickly moved into the semifinals with an easy victory over Superior. Rock Springs sent the Pirates to the Saturday morning eliminators with a close win and the host Wolves upset Star Valley in the other semifinal. Hard luck Reliance was eliminated by a scrappy Rawlins team who then lost to Star Valley in the No. 3 and 4 seed game. Green River played Rock Springs close for the championship, but the Tigers eventually won by five.
The southwest Class B tourney was played the weekend before in Rock Springs. As always perennial contenders Mt. View, Lyman and Hanna figured into the mix, with the Buffaloes and Miners taking the west and east conference championships. (Mt. View’s was determined by winning a coin flip with Pinedale.) Saratoga played Mt. View in one of the semifinal games while the other was between Pinedale and Hanna. Mt. View and Hanna easily won their games to square off for the championship. Hanna won by three over Mt. View to take the No. 1 seed. Pinedale and Lyman won eliminator games and the met to determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds, where Lyman won easily over Pinedale.
In Laramie, the southwest did well. Rock Springs won the Class A state championship while Rawlins took fourth place. Green River also lasted all four days, losing in the consolation finals to Casper Natrona. Star Valley lasted three days, being eliminated by Green River on Friday. For Class B, the four southwest representatives didn’t have the ponies to keep up with finalists Byron and Cowley, but Mt. View did take third-place honors and Hanna won the fourth-place game. Pinedale and Lyman found the going somewhat more difficult as both were eliminated by the end of play on Thursday.
