Noteworthy Events of the 1946-1947 Season
1. Cheyenne = Perfect—Okie Blanchard’s Cheyenne Indians ran the table during the ’46-’47 season winning every game by at least nine points, quite the dominant performance. Six of their 26 wins were against out-of-state teams and only Casper Natrona and Evanston were able to keep the deficit to single digits. Many in Laramie County hoped for a Cheyenne Indians versus St. Mary’s Gaels finale at the state tourney— the latter playing for the first time as a Class A team—but the parochial school played for third place, losing to Evanston in the semis.
2. Pioneering finish—Ten Sleep proved to be the top Class B team in the state, dropping only one conference game (to Byron) in late December. The Pioneers were perfect after that, winning every game scheduled during the New Year, a total of 19 in a row by the time the championship trophy was theirs. Their time spent in Laramie wasn’t quite the easy romp compared to Cheyenne’s championship march, as they played and won close games for the first three nights, the toughest a one-point win over Pinedale in the opener. Only their championship victory was lopsided, by 25 points over conference rival Shoshoni.
3. Ten Sleep 112-Dubois 10—The Rat’s work for wyoming-basketball.com only covers games starting from seeded state tourneys, beginning in 1932. This is the first instance he’s found of the century mark being attained. This occurred during the opening round of the Class B district tourney in Greybull on Thursday, 2/27/47. [I’m not sure if the 102-point spread is any sort of record, but it has to be in the top three or four.] The Worland paper said that the Pioneers led at the quarter 19-4, at the half 49-4, 78-9 at the three quarters pole, and that Dubois was able to attain double digits with a free throw in the last quarter. Rhodes of Ten Sleep led the scoring with 24.
4. Chugwater’s bad luck—A note in the Chugwater paper from January: “We have received the new basket ball. This is the 4th ordered this year. Two were returned because of defects and the one has gone out of shape. We are hoping this last one will stand up.” Actually, this is partly explainable as U.S. industry is gearing back to civilian needs rather than military demands. Anything involving rubber had military priority during the war years, creating a shortage of athletic gear in items such as basketballs and rubber-soled shoes. The Rat guesses that visiting teams to Chugwater brought their own ‘pumpkins’ to stage proper games.
5. Lander/Riverton; a home court edge?—The Lander paper issued a decree that future Lander/Riverton games be played only on the Lander court. This edict came after Lander was defeated in the Riverton “crackerbox” gym in the final game of the regular season. Apparently too many tickets had been sold and the large crowd had overflowed onto the playing court in Riverton. From the Wyoming Journal: “Lander players went down the sidelines of the court at their own peril as the feet of ardent Riverton rooters, intent on giving their team every advantage, seemed to be pushed on the floor in the path of the Lander players. Whenever the ball was taken out of bounds, the player with the ball had to step into the crowd to get off the court. Lander players had no trouble getting back on the court, assisted by a push from some Riverton rooter. Riverton’s high school’s team, sharing the cellar position with Greybull, with the help of several hundred members of the crowd, were able to defeat Lander 41 to 36. For three quarters the teams played on even terms, but in the last quarter the strain of playing a bitterly vicious crowd put Lander’s Tigers on the short end of the score.”
6. “Big Six” Conference beginnings—In late 1946 work was started to form a conference of the six largest schools in the state, those being Cheyenne, Rock Springs, Laramie, Rawlins, Sheridan and Casper. There was talk of inviting either (or both) of the two largest Big Horn Basin teams into the fold as well, but Cody and Powell were happy with the status quo. Talk of Class B and a new Class C was being discussed as well.
7. “Mt. View Player Gets There—by Pony”—So said the headline from the Rock Springs paper. They continued, “Mt. View freshman Ted Hickey, awoke to find the roads near his ranch home completely blocked by a heavy storm during the night. He was due to play in town that evening to play visiting Big Piney. He waited until noon, hoping the road would be cleared, but then took matters into his own hands. He saddled up his pinto pony and two hours later he arrived at school, a little cold but all smiles. ‘It wasn’t bad at all,’ he said. ‘Let’s play ball.’”
8. Jim Weir: Go Pro or Coach Alma Mater—Former Green River all-stater and University of Wyoming basketball star Jim Weir had a difficult decision to make after attaining his master’s degree the previous spring at UW. He had signed a contract to teach and coach in his hometown but several professional basketball teams were interested in signing him to play. Initially offered $5,000, the amount was then raised to $7,500 and then $8,000. The Youngstown Clippers said, “Name your own salary, but come on—we want you to play basketball for us!” Although the amount seems paltry to today’s mega-salaries, however, Weir would’ve made as much money in four months as he would make in four years of coaching his former high school team. Coach Weir said no to the pros, saying he’d signed a contract with the school district and would honor that. Green River made the state tourney under Weir’s direction, finishing in fourth place.

Defending state champion Casper Natrona was the favorite heading into district play, having dispatched four of their six district foes both at home and on the road during the regular season. Sheridan had other ideas, building momentum off an overtime loss to the Mustangs in mid-February, and turned the tables in the district finals, winning over Casper by double digits. Midwest posted another fine season, finishing third with a win over Newcastle to determine the seeds at the state tourney.
Clearmont’s two Powder River Conference losses during the regular season were to Moorcroft but the Panthers finally found the way to defeat the Wolves in the Class B finals by more than double the score. Ranchester battled Upton for the No. 3 seed (the Northeast sent only three teams to Laramie) after both won Saturday morning eliminators. The Rustlers had posted two close wins over the Bobcats in late January but found the going easier with a nine-point victory and a trip to Laramie in two weeks’ time.
At the state tourney, both Casper Natrona and Sheridan lasted all four days, the Mustangs copping the consolation trophy and the Broncs losing a close one in the fourth-place game. Midwest won its first game before losing its next two, and Newcastle was two and done in the Gem City. In Class B, Clearmont had some success, winning its first game but dropping games on Thursday and Friday. Both Moorcroft and Ranchester were two and done.

Southeast
The Cheyenne Indians made their run to the state title look about as easy as it could be. Only two of their victories were decided by less than double digits, both of them nine-point wins over Casper Natrona (during the regular season) and Evanston in the Class A finals. Mark up another state championship for Okie Blanchard. Besides the Indians, SE Class A teams at state were Laramie, St. Mary’s and Torrington. St. Mary’s first go at Class A competition was quite the success story and the Gaels darn near upset Laramie at the district tourney in Wheatland, losing by a one-point margin, and spoiling a potential battle between the two Cheyenne schools, much to the disappointment of Laramie County hoop fans.
The Class B story of the Southeast District was that Huntley was playing a (mostly) Class A schedule, scheduling home and away games with Douglas, Lusk, Torrington and Wheatland. Their games with fellow Goshen Hole Conference teams would be played by their JV squad, which virtually conceded that particular conference title to LaGrange. Albin was the East Laramie County Conference winner while Guernsey went undefeated in the north of the Platte River grouping. Twenty teams met in Wheatland to choose the six Class B teams to represent the SE at the state tourney. (Hillsdale had disbanded mid-season due to a shortage of players.)
When the dust had settled after four days of Class B competition at Wheatland, Huntley reigned supreme, eking a two-point win over Guernsey in the finale. Albin finished third, Pine Bluffs surprised many with a fourth-place finish, while Glenrock defeated Veteran in the fifth/sixth place game. LaGrange’s inability to make the state-bound sextet was the biggest surprise at Wheatland.
At the state tourney, Cheyenne took the championship, while St. Mary’s and Laramie also lasted all four days. St. Mary’s made the semis before losing a close one in the third-place game to Thermopolis, while Laramie lost to Natrona in the consolation finals. Torrington was two and done. For the Class B teams, Guernsey, Huntley and Glenrock lasted all four days. The Longhorns took third place, the Cardinals lost the fourth-place game and the Sheepherders took consolation honors. Albin and Veteran each lasted three days. The Wildcats won their first game while the Eagles won their second game, each exiting with a 1-2 record. Pine Bluffs was two and done.

Rat Droppings***Huntley played their five traditional Goshen Hole Conference opponents with their B squad so I’ve not listed those results on their varsity record (although I did list the results for the opposing schools since the games figured into the conference standings. ) When they played a Class B school outside of their conference like Albin or Guernsey, they used their varsity team. At the Goshen Hole Conference tourney (that Huntley hosted) the B squad represented the school.

Rat Droppings***It was announced in the Laramie paper on January 10 that the team name would be the Buckaroos. Previous to this date, they were just called the Preps. Looks like the Rat needs to change some old UPrep files dating back to 1932.

Northwest
The nine Class A teams met in Thermopolis with no clear-cut favorite as the standings from the Worland paper demonstrate. Lovell earned the easiest opening round game against Riverton as the Wolverines had dispatched Greybull from tourney play in the play-in game. Cody, Basin and Thermopolis joined Lovell in the semis and Lovell and Thermopolis had easy victories to reach the finals. Cody met Lander in the battle for No. 3 and 4 seeds, as both teams won Saturday morning eliminators, and Lander’s surprising run continued as the Tigers eked out a two-point win over the Broncs. The host team Bobcats easily took the first-place trophy in a win over Lovell.
Eleven Class B teams had met the weekend before in Greybull. Ten Sleep and Byron were the favorites as each team benefitted from having opponents who had played in the opening games earlier that same day. Burlington and Shoshoni joined the two top seeds with quarterfinal wins. The tourney played out as expected with Burlington and Shoshoni losing to Byron and Ten Sleep, respectively. Burlington and Shoshoni were fated to meet in the battle for the No. 3 seed—the district only sent three to Laramie—and the Wranglers took honors over the Huskies. The Ten Sleep/Byron final was the rubber game between the two schools as each had defeated the other on their home court, Byron being Ten Sleep’s only Class B loss during the regular season. The Pioneers took the top trophy with a six-point win over the Eagles.
The Class A Big Horn Basin teams disappointed somewhat at the state tourney as Thermopolis took third as the only team to last all four days. Lander and Lovell lasted three days, exiting with 1-2 records while Cody was two and done. The three Class B teams were a huge factor as Ten Sleep took first place from runners-up Shoshoni. Byron lasted all four days, as well, losing in the third place game to Guernsey (which was coached by a Byron graduate, Harry Mangus.)

Southwest
Nine Class A and nine Class B schools met in Green River for Southwest District bragging rights. Four teams in Class A had won double-digit conference games and were favorites to head to Laramie in two weeks’ time. Superior eliminated Jackson on Wednesday evening to fill out the eight-team bracket. The host Wolves surprised with a win over Rawlins in the first round as did Kemmerer in an upset of Rock Springs. Favorites Evanston and Star Valley had easy wins to make the semis as well. Friday night Evanston dispatched Green River while Star Valley squeaked out an overtime win over Kemmerer. Green River and Kemmerer continued to surprise with eliminator game wins over Rock Springs and Rawlins, respectively. The hosts continued their Cinderella run, beating Kemmerer in the third/fourth place game. Evanston had an easy go in the championship, winning by 11 over Star Valley.
Encampment eliminated Big Piney to complete the Class B bracket. Cokeville, Lyman, Hanna and Mt. View were all first-round winners. Lyman defeated Cokeville while Hanna handled Mt. View to set up the final game, a classic one-point win by Hanna over Lyman to claim first place. In eliminator games, Pinedale upset Cokeville while Mt. View did likewise to Saratoga. Mt. View claimed third place with a win over Pinedale.
The Southwest continued to be a force to be reckoned with at the state tourney in Laramie. In Class B, Hanna finished in fourth place with a 3-1 record. Mt. View lasted all four days and lost in the consolation finals. Pinedale went 1-2 during their stay in the Gem City while Mt. View was two and done. Class A had two teams last all four days, the best being Evanston, which made the championship final against Cheyenne. They lost, but were able to keep the spread just under double digits, only the second team to do so against the undefeated Indians. Green River took fourth place, their only loss was also to Coach Blanchard’s crew. Star Valley lasted three days, exiting with a 1-2 record, while Kemmerer was two and done.

Rat Droppings: Coach Weir’s training rules:
1. Off the streets every night of the week, except Saturday, by 10pm
2. Two nights before a game, must be off the streets by 9:30 and in bed by 10
3. Alcoholics [sic] and smoking are strictly forbidden

5. Very little sweets, no pie, doughnuts or other greasy foods at any time
