Noteworthy Events of the 1943-1944 Season
1. Senior boys (and girls)—A common occurrence for all prep teams was the loss of upperclassmen to the armed forces. Seniors had to keep their grades up to be deferred—if not, their draft board was immediately notified—but many opted out of part or all of their senior year to serve Uncle Sam. Okie Blanchard bemoaned the loss of starter Powell late in the season to the press, but received crocodile tears from a Casper sportswriter which commented with words to the effect, “Only one? The Mustangs have had it WAY worse than that!” Upperclassmen males were in short supply and the same was happening for females, as well. Many would-be senior girls either enlisted, moved to states where defense jobs were offering employment, took government clerical jobs or, most common, got married, causing a decline in distaff enrollment, as well. State officials from the governor on down encouraged the students to stay in school and graduate, but the message was met with many a deaf ear.
2. Older coaches—Teaching shortages around the state left around 500 teaching positions unfilled for the ’43-’44 school year. The Rat has brushed on this phenomenon in prior years, as schools scrambled to fill vacant positions. [Rural one-room schools suffered the most and many were closed; a qualified replacement could not be found.] Older men, often the superintendents or principals, took over the coaching reins, as the majority of the high school faculty was staffed by females. The Rat isn’t sure but much of the scoring in games seems lower and the odd games with total scores in the teens and low twenties resurface a lot more during the war years. It’s the Rat’s guess that older coaches coached the game more like the game in the ’30s, with much more slower, deliberate play. It makes sense, since that’s the way they were used to coaching prior to moving into administration.
3. Okie wins again—Cheyenne had a relatively easy time of it, losing in Wyoming only once in the regular season, to archrival Laramie. Cattycorner opposition came from Carl Dir’s Worland team, which had only one loss all season long. Each team won their respective district tourney—Cheyenne’s wins were somewhat more lopsided—along with Casper Natrona and Superior as No. 1 seeds from the NE and SW, respectively. Cheyenne made the finale by ousting Casper while Worland dispatched surprise semifinalist Laramie. The two best teams sporting the two best records in Wyoming played and Cheyenne had an easy time of it, winning by nine and hanging another championship banner for Okie Blanchard, the state’s best hoops coach.
4. And in Class B—Cowley and Glenrock were both relative newcomers to the Class B ranks. The Jaguars made the move for the current season and the Sheepherders had done so the school year before. Each team had a close semifinal game with Cowley winning by three over Big Horn while Glenrock squeaked out a one-point win over Hanna. The final game was anticlimactic, as Cowley won in a romp over Glenrock.

7. Lusk/Douglas: No Hard Feelings—The trouble began at the Armistice Day football game between Lusk and Douglas. It was a hard-fought game between traditional rivals, a 12-7 win for the visiting Tigers. Emotions ran heavy both during and after the game as the Douglas Enterprise mentioned a “rough and tumble contest” which would’ve been prematurely ended had “much more arguing and bickering between players, spectators, coaches, officials, and what-have-you” happened. The Lusk Herald mentioned “countless fights among the spectators on the sidelines, a Douglas player bit the finger of a Lusk player, and together with indecisive refereeing, the afternoon was bedlam.” A Douglas high school scribe/wag mentioned that Douglas Football Queen Dorothy Leman “was not the only one crowned” that day.
Both communities called for a moratorium on games between the two schools and when the Herald published the Tigers’ basketball schedule in early December, sure enough, no games were scheduled with the Bearcats. Sports columnist Lou Musser of the Casper Tribune-Herald urged both parties to reconsider, to resume friendly relations. A number of Lusk Lions Club members took matters into their own hands and met with the newly chartered Douglas Lions Club proffering an olive branch, and with approval from both school boards, basketball games were eventually scheduled in early and late February.

Northeast
Seven Class A and seven Class B teams met in Gillette for the Northeast District Tourney. For the larger schools, Casper Natrona—back after absenting themselves from the previous year’s district event—was the prohibitive favorite. Earning a first-round bye, the Mustangs didn’t disappoint the experts with two easy wins to take the championship. The final game was a laugher over the host Camels. Third and fourth place went to Midwest and Buffalo, with the Oilers winning in another one-sided affair. At State A, Casper took third, losing to eventual champs Cheyenne in the semis. Midwest won one game of the three they played in Laramie while Gillette and Buffalo were both eliminated in two games.
Hulett’s surprise appearance at Gillette was welcome, even though the Class B school played only two games during the regular season. The Red Devils increased the bracket to seven teams—Arvada and Kaycee did not field teams and Dayton’s regular season ended in January—with Big Horn earning the first-round bye. Big Horn dispatched Rozet in the semis while Ranchester did likewise with Upton, setting up a final between the Rams and the Rustlers. Big Horn held a two wins to one advantage over Ranchester from the regular season and took a third victory from the Rustlers in the finals. At the State B tourney Big Horn won their first game before losing their next two. Ranchester was two and done.

Rat Droppings***Sundance traveled to Upton in two cars on January 28. The car containing most of the varsity got stuck in a snowdrift but the other one, with two varsity players, made it to the Bobcats’ gym. The ones there played a game using borrowed uniforms from Upton—theirs were in the coach’s car stuck in the drift—and, coached by the JV coach, lost in a rout to Upton. Upton shows this game as a varsity win. Sundance doesn’t list it in their season record.

Southeast
Six teams vied for Class A bragging rights at the district tourney in Wheatland. Cheyenne and Laramie (as usual) were the favorites to make it to the finals and didn’t disappoint. The Indians won easily over Douglas and Torrington en route to the finals. The Plainsmen dispatched Lusk and squeaked by the host team Bulldogs to gain the finals as well. Laramie had the distinction of being the only Wyoming team to defeat Cheyenne for the season, winning at home and losing in Laramie County. The rubber match between the two teams for the district championship was no contest, as Okie Blanchard’s crew won easily. Cheyenne would take the state championship two weeks later. Torrington and Wheatland finished third and fourth respectively, and each team won one game at state. Host Laramie played all four days, winning two and losing two.
It was a crowded Class B bracket as 18 teams were entered into the fray. Favorites heading into the tourney were Albin and Sunrise, whose teams sported the best records. In the quarterfinals Chugwater won over U Prep, Sunrise over Burns, Glenrock over Manville, and Albin over Huntley. The semifinals saw Chugwater squeaking by Sunrise while Glenrock easily handled Albin; so much for the favorites. Glenrock won by a point over Chugwater in the finals. Glenrock maintained that momentum with a second-place finish at the state tourney in Laramie. Chugwater was two and done.

Rat Droppings***Sunrise played an A schedule as well as a Class B one and did well, as the Wyoming Eagle had them at 14-0 after their Wheatland win in February, Wyoming’s only undefeated team that far into the regular season. Their season took a turn for the worse when their two best athletes, Francesco and Balazon, were taken by the armed forces in early February, actually a fairly common occurrence for all teams. Once males turned 18 years old, they were eligible to be classified for service for Uncle Sam, depending on the local draft board’s purview/quota system. [They could be deferred until graduation if their birthday was within a six months’ window of graduation.] The Rat’s not sure if that’s the reason the Miners played in Class B for tourney play or not—it might be a factor—but certainly their enrollment numbers qualified Sunrise for Class B play. Cowley and Byron did the same in the NW, that is, play mostly an A schedule but compete in Class B for tourney play.

Northwest
Nine Class A teams and eight Class B teams met in Cody for the Northwest District Tourney. For the larger schools, Worland entered the tourney with only one loss during the regular season and was the odds-on favorite. The Warriors didn’t disappoint with a first-round win over Lander and eked out a one-point victory in the semis over the host Broncs. Basin had found its mojo in a six-win, one-loss February and made the finals with easy wins over Lovell and Greybull. Worland posted its fourth win over Basin for the championship. Cody defeated Greybull for third place, which necessitated a final fourth-place game between the Buffalos with the consolation champs, Powell. The Panthers, who were relegated to consolation play by Greybull on day one, soundly defeated Greybull in their second tourney try. Powell’s run to the fourth place was quite the march as the Panthers won four games over two days to do so.
In Class B, the finals featured Shoshoni versus Cowley. Shoshoni had dispatched Ten Sleep and Burlington in close games in the quarter- and semifinals. Cowley had an easier time of it with big wins over Dubois and Manderson. Cowley kept the heat on, taking the Class B honors with an eight-point win over the Wranglers.
At state, Worland maintained its success and stretched its win streak to 20 games before finishing second to the Class A championship winning Cheyenne team. Basin and Powell were two and done in the Gem City while Cody lasted all four days, losing to Rawlins in overtime in the fourth-place game. Class B state championship honors went to Cowley; only its semifinal win was close (27-24 over Big Horn) with two other easy wins. Shoshoni lost its first game (to eventual runners-up Glenrock) but rallied for two easy wins and consolation honors.

Rat Droppings***Playing at Heart Mountain was quite the challenge as attendance at games there was usually well over 1,000 people. Just prior to the district tourney, Heart Mountain found out it had not been invited to participate. The Sentinel sports editor didn’t mention exactly why, just said “for one reason or another” the Eagles weren’t invited. He speculated that they’d be a challenge for teams from Class A or Class B (although the high school’s enrollment was well over the 100 A/B student dividing line.) [The previous year both Lander and Heart Mountain were denied entry into the district tourney, the reason cited as neither school had played a variety of Big Horn Basin schools. When you compare the schedules for the two schools for ’43-’44 season, the Eagles had scheduled a variety of Basin schools, in both classifications. Lander had scheduled games with just four schools. Guess which school was invited to district? Yep, Lander. Apparently the forced relocation of the Japanese-Americans wasn’t enough, the Nisei—second-generation children born in the US—were still paying for the Pearl Harbor attack more than two years later.]

Rat Droppings***The Cowley Progress reported the 1/12 score as a win for Cowley. The Heart Mountain Sentinel reported just the opposite. The Rat tends to believe the Heart Mountain account which contains a box score and is reflected in their summation/season record at the end of the ’43-’44 regular season. To be honest, the Cowley Progress had a ways to go to improve their hit and miss sports reporting.

At the Southwest District tourney, eight teams formed the Class A bracket, knowing that this was the year that a weaker Rock Springs could be toppled from its stranglehold on the No. 1 seed from the SW, a common occurrence in the past dozen years. Just about all the teams had either won a game from the Tigers or had played them close. Rock Springs did win its opener on day one, along with Rawlins, host Green River and Superior. Rawlins sent Green River to the consolation side of the bracket and Superior did the same to Rock Springs. The Dragons took first with an easy win over the Outlaws while Sweetwater County neighbors Rock Springs and Green River battled through eliminator games to square off for third and fourth place. Green River eked out a one-point win for the No. 3 seed.
Nine teams constituted the Class B side of things, necessitating a play-in game for the No. 8 seed in the bracket between Baggs and first-year team Eden. The Rattlers won the spot in the tourney, while the Bulldogs—that’s their mascot name then—were sent packing. Hanna, Mt. View, Lyman and Jackson all won their opener, then Hanna dispatched Mt. View while Lyman did likewise to Jackson. Hanna had played the toughest regular-season schedule of the Class B teams and it showed in its 10-point win in the championship over Lyman.
At state A, Rawlins did the best of the four SW teams, winning three of four to finish fourth. Green River won three of four as well, taking the consolation championship over Superior, which had won two and lost two. Rock Springs managed one win, its opening game, but was eliminated with two losses over the next 48 hours.
