Noteworthy Events of the 1936-1937 season
1. Back to Casper—It’s another year for NCHS to host the state tourney, their final year of a run from 1932 to 1937, although the 1936 tourney planned for there wasn’t held due to health considerations. Seventeen teams descended upon Casper and after a play-in game won by Kemmerer over Basin, the tourney bracket was filled. The three pre-tourney favorites were Cheyenne, winners of 28 straight heading into round one, as well as Lovell and Rock Springs as both had lost only one game all season long. All three teams had breezed through their respective district tourneys. Rawlins took Cheyenne out of championship consideration with an upset win over Cheyenne in round one and Lovell lost in the semis to Evanston. Okie Blanchard’s Tigers made the State Tourney an easy romp, winning over district foe Evanston in the finale. The championship marked Okie’s final one in Rock Springs, ending a successful 12 year run there.
2. Also to Lingle—At the all comers girls state tourney in Lingle, 20 teams traveled from around Wyoming to vie for a championship. Most were from Districts #2A and #2B, 16 in all. Three were from District #4, Newcastle, Upton and Sundance and one from District #1, Mt. View made it across the state, much to the tourney-goers’ delight. The four playing at the end of Saturday were all an hour’s drive (at most) from each other. LaGrange topped Chugwater for consolation honors and Torrington took the championship with a five point win over host Lingle. The all state tourney team listed players from only four teams: Pine Bluffs, Hillsdale, Lingle and Torrington. (There was a lengthy honorable mention list, but I’ve only been able to track down the first names of 6 of the 12 listed, so I’ll keep looking before I add it to the list of honorees.)
3. Pressure from Laramie—A lengthy op-ed appeared in the Laramie Boomerang sports pages, about bringing the state tourney again to Laramie, as it had hosted the gathering prior to 1932. The article pointed out the advantages to the community—although some businessmen were opposed at a grassroots meeting held prior to the article being penned—and it seems as if the push to move the tourney began, at least publicly, with that editorial from the Laramie paper. [At the back of my mind, I wonder if Casper’s new basketball coach, Okie Blanchard, might’ve been some of the reason for the push, as well. After all, it was bad enough for Natrona County to hire away the state’s best coach (in football, as well as hoops) from Rock Springs, but giving Okie home games for tourney play would be just too much. The solution? Move the tourney to Laramie, which is what eventually happened for the next school year.]

Northeast
You gotta love the northeast as their district tourney involved all 15 schools. They used a modified format from the last district tourney in 1935, that is, it was bracketed so no one played more than five games. As usual, first round losers battled it out for consolation honors and Upton took those laurels with a win over Big Horn in the consolation finals. Sheridan was accorded the #1 seed, a first round bye and a relatively easy path to the championship where they defeated upstart Sundance. Gillette enjoyed their role as hosts, upsetting #2 seed Buffalo twice for the #3 spot and a ticket to Casper. Although Sheridan was the reigning football champion, they couldn’t duplicate the magic in the Oil City, in fact all three teams were two and out at the state tourney.

East Central
Casper Natrona had lost several games to Wyoming teams, however all but one—a split with Glenrock—were to teams outside of District 2-B. The district tourney was scheduled to take place in Douglas, but the Bearcats didn’t qualify, so the competition was moved to Torrington. The Trailblazers enjoyed the home cookin’ taking 3rd with wins over Sunrise and Ft. Laramie the final day. Casper Natrona handled Glenrock easily in the 2-B championship. Two weekends later, the Mustangs also enjoyed their turn as tourney hosts, as well, salvaging a 4th place finish at state. Both Glenrock and Torrington notched a W at state, as well, before exiting.

Rat Droppings***Although Coach Alva Straw had brought home state championships in football and track, he never had the success with basketball. On the night that he resigned from head coaching duties in hoops, the school board hired Okie Blanchard, a Casper alum and probably the best coach in the state at the time for the next school year. The Casper paper doesn’t say, but I’m guessing that Straw got wind of the new hire and got the heck out of Dodge ASAP. In fact, he left for the West Coast the day after a testimonial dinner held on 2/10.

The big question in District 2-A seems to be always the same, that is, what other team besides Cheyenne and Laramie will go to Casper? Cheyenne was the cream of the crop (if not the whole state) ripping off 28 consecutive wins from January 2nd through the championship at the district tourney (check out those tourney scores!) Laramie was second although the Plainsmen were only a game over .500 entering district play. Hillsdale and Cinderella Chugwater (an upset winner over a favored Wheatland crew) fought it out for 3rd place honors with the Pioneers making their second trip to Casper during the 1930s. Upset by Rawlins in round one at Casper, Cheyenne bounced back with a 5th place finish; Laramie grabbed 8th place.

Rat Droppings***I’m running into the whole “practice games” scenario again. The first two games, although the results were written up in the Eagle, weren’t counted in the season’s total for the Indians by the local newspaper. Yet one might notice that both games were away games and when they played ‘regular season games’ again later on, it was at the Cheyenne high school gym. Makes me think of a home and home arrangement which explains why I’ve listed them as part of the record.
Cheyenne’s top scorer was one of Wyoming’s true claims to fame, guard Curtis Gowdy, or more familiarly, Curt, the moniker that made him a constant for decades in sports broadcasts, in a Hall of Fame career.

Northwest
Eighteen teams met in Worland for the District #3 tourney. There were two play-in games to reduce the field to a more bracket-able size of 16. Deaver sent Meeteetse packing and Byron did likewise to Burlington. Lovell, by virtue of their undefeated record versus Big Horn Basin teams entered the tourney as the favorite, and didn’t disappoint as they easily won their way to the championship, the final a 12-point win over Greybull. Third place was garnered by Cowley with a win over Basin, earning another trip to Casper for the Jaguars, their fourth trip in five years. Basin was accorded the play-in bid (vs Kemmerer) for the State Tourney, meaning all four teams from District #3 were from Big Horn County. Lovell finished 3rd at State and Greybull notched 7th.

This particular district was loaded for bear, producing the state champion Rock Springs (Okie’s last championship there), runner up Evanston, 6th place finisher Rawlins (whose upset over Cheyenne in the first round at state stopped the Indians’ win streak at 28) and even at-large qualifier Kemmerer was a first round winner. The win percentages are somewhat lower because each team was defeating the other; for example, Evanston lost to Green River, Kemmerer and Rock Springs. Before the State Tourney, on the first weekend of March, eight teams qualified for the Class A portion of District #1. Rock Springs, Green River, Rawlins and Superior qualified from the east and Kemmerer, Evanston, Star Valley and Lyman represented the east. Eight other teams (actually nine, as Diamondville lost a play-in game to Baggs) vied for the Class B honors with Hanna defeating Cokeville in the B finals.

Rat Droppings***Hanna’s center was one of the few blacks to play prep hoops in Wyoming at the time. His name was Jesse Owens—a name identical to the recent ’36 Olympic champion—and he was often referred to as Hanna’s “colored” player. [His brother Sylvester (or Sylvestre, I’ve seen it spelled both ways) starred for Hanna in a state tourney earlier in the decade.] Hanna also had a speedy guard of Japanese descent whose ancestry also received mention in scoring summaries, making the Miners a, dare I say, racially diverse outfit. Gathering coverage on Hanna is always frustrating, as they had no home newspaper and the column about Hanna, a regular feature in the Rawlins paper, never mentioned prep sports, even when they fielded a state runner-up in 1933. What is usually found is skewed a bit by opponents’ bias. There’s a great story here that I believe has been lost to the ages.

Rat Droppings***Jackson/Wilson was bit more of a presence on the prep hoop scene, although they still played most of their games as intra-class battles with an occasional town team opponent thrown in. The games in mid-March were part of the Winter Carnival events at Jackson, a four team tourney. On the final weekend in March, Jackson traveled by plane to their opponents’ courts, the first evidence the Rat has seen of air travel for hoop teams; travel by car caravan, yes; by bus, yes; by train, yes, but no airplane travel prior to this date.
