Noteworthy Events of the 1935-1936 season
1. A season best forgotten—sickness—There were signs early on in the initial weeks of December that coaches and athletes would be battling illness all season long. The little school at Veteran closed for three weeks in December because of an outbreak of scarlet fever. A larger municipality—Cheyenne—joined in the act the day after Christmas when the Laramie County health officer banned all school children from public gatherings because of a prevalence of scarlet fever in town. The order applied to all children from kindergarten through the junior high grades and lasted through Jan. 6. They were prohibited from attending churches, theaters or parties. The sickness (along with outbreaks of measles, mumps and even smallpox) spread throughout the state during the months of January and February, necessitating closings in Gillette, Lusk, Big Piney and in other schools as well. There were several deaths of schoolchildren around Wyoming, generally from scarlet fever. As district tourney-time approached, it became iffy as to whether some of the state’s districts would be able to stage their tournaments.
District #2-A (Cheyenne),# 2-B (Douglas) and #4 (Gillette) were all ordered by the Wyoming Board of Health to cancel their tourneys as well as the boys state tourney at Casper and the girls state tourney in Lingle. There was some protest to this order from the superintendent in Douglas who said there was no sign of illness in Douglas. And the order did not pertain to a UW playoff game or the State A.A.U. meet held during the same time in Laramie. District tourneys WERE held in District #3 (Lovell) and #1 (Green River) which apparently were healthier parts of the state. No state champions were crowned and no all-state tourney teams were selected. [The closest we can approximate all-state teams were the all-tourney team from District #1 and a prize winning stars from #3.]
Okie Blanchard tried to organize an invitational pseudo-State Tourney, inviting eight top teams from around the state. Five teams were officially invited to attend: Rock Springs, Thermopolis, Cheyenne, Rawlins and Worland. Three other teams would’ve been chosen from the following: Lovell, Kemmerer, Laramie, Casper, Douglas, and Midwest. State health officials rallied forces to put the kibosh on the whole deal, saying there was no way Casper, Laramie, Douglas or Cheyenne would be there as the schools were still under the aforementioned ban. Rawlins had scheduled a trip to Laramie to see the A.A.U. tourney. The final nail in the coffin was when the State Board of Health said there could be no inter-district play between schools. No tourney was held.
(I suppose we tend to forget how events like the Spanish flu epidemic from 1918-20 affected people from this era. Parents of the players, coaches and state health officials would’ve grown up during that epidemic [the upperclassmen student athletes were infants during that time] that accounted for over a half million deaths in the US alone, and at least 50 million worldwide. For most adults, if they hadn’t been touched by a death in the family from the Spanish flu, they knew of someone who did.)
2. A season best forgotten—weather—To add to the health woes around the state, the winter of 1936 was a nasty one. Killer storms with blizzard conditions occurred in both January and February. The one in mid-February was particularly irksome as there was little time left to reschedule postponed games and many were cancelled. I’ve tried to list the games that were cancelled, but haven’t found them all. One will notice breaks in the schedule, however and if a team didn’t play on a particular weekend, it’s probably weather-related cancellations.
3. Okie’s denied a two-peat—Defending state champion Rock Springs was the cream of the state’s basketball teams, returning three all-state tourney team members: Bekakis, Strannigan, and Muir. (Rock Springs was also the 1935 state football champion, as well.) The Tigers roared through their season, losing only one game—the finals of the District #1 tourney to Rawlins. Rawlins had lost two previous games during the regular season to Rock Springs, including a two-point game at home. Cheyenne was strongest in District 2-A and had whipped nemesis Laramie in both regular season games for the first time in years. Casper Natrona was the best in 2-B, while Worland took honors in District #3 and #4 was up for grabs between Sundance and Sheridan.
4. And the ladies?—Wheatland gets the nod as the toughest of a cluster of excellent teams. Torrington was the only team to defeat Wheatland as the two teams split their games. Burns won the East Laramie Conference for the third straight year and Veteran posted an impressive season record, as well. It would’ve been a great state tourney in Lingle and the “all-comers” aspect guaranteed that no deserving team would’ve been left out. Girls basketball was in its death throes around the rest of the state and teams (like Newcastle, a recent state champion) were begging to find games with nearby schools.
5. All-State tourney teams?—No state tourneys mean there were no honors accorded to the best players statewide, male or female. I can’t even begin to guess at the girls’ side as few papers detailed any standout performers; a researcher is lucky to come up with a score. Several do come to mind on the boys’ side. Only District #1 listed an all-tourney team. Several of those names are familiar, including Rock Springs’ Mike Bekakis and Pete Muir as well as Byron Martin of Kemmerer, each an all-state tourney player from 1935. First team newcomers included Clyde Pryce and Ralph Bottoms from Rawlins, Robert Krall from Kemmerer, and Alois Hudachko from Rock Springs. Second team newbies were John Roletto from Kemmerer, Sammy Boothe from Evanston and Leon Ward from Saratoga. (Saratoga would’ve been a non-attendee in Casper and Evanston would’ve had to win a play-in game to participate at state.)
Prizes awarded at the District #3 tourney included Thermopolis’ Jack Aggers as best forward and Lazo Galovich as the best center. [Galovich was one of the state’s first stud behemoth centers, listed at 6’7’ or 6’8”, depending on the writer.] Worland’s Harlow Davis was hailed as the best guard and Lovell’s Jack Pearson was high point scorer for the three day tourney.
Certainly a Cheyenne and Casper Natrona player would’ve cracked the first or second teams had a state tourney been held, maybe even one from a weaker Laramie squad. No doubt the NE would’ve been whitewashed again without an all-state pick, which would’ve been the fifth year of sectional ignomy.
6. A fantasy hoops tourney—Here’s a take on how the boys’ state tourney would’ve played out, at least on the championship side. (based on the 1935 tourney seedings)
First Round, Top Bracket—Cheyenne over Kemmerer; Sundance over Lusk; Lovell over Douglas; Rawlins over Wheatland.
First Round, Bottom Bracket—Thermopolis over Casper Natrona; Rock Springs over Sheridan; Laramie over Evanston; Worland over Upton.
Quarterfinals—Cheyenne over Sundance; Rawlins over Lovell; Rock Springs over Thermopolis; Worland over Laramie.
Semifinals—Cheyenne over Rawlins; Rock Springs over Worland.
Finals—Rock Springs over Cheyenne.
7. Rule Changes?—Just two main ones. They eliminated the center jump after a successful free throw. This sped up the game considerably. The other was the three-second rule which kept the offensive players from being in the lane—and the free throw circle!—for longer than three seconds.

Northeast
Weather really pestered the northeast schedule and just about every team had games cancelled, postponed or both during a miserable January and February, which saw killer blizzards and record cold temperatures. Add to that the scarlet fever outbreak that closed school in Gillette for two weeks (although the Camels did play some road games during that time) and then—once the schools reopened—a ruling by county and state health officers that the District #4 tourney in Gillette would be cancelled and one has a massive mess, trying to discern accurate records for each NE school.
Which ones would’ve represented District #4 in Casper? It was wide open, as Sundance and Upton finished 1-2 in the conference and the big three—Gillette, Buffalo and Sheridan—were all weaker than usual and totaled five losses (and four wins) in total versus the Bulldogs and Bobcats. The Rat leans toward Sundance, Sheridan (the state football runners-up) and Upton. Possibly Gillette might figure as a darkhorse, being the tourney host, but a sporadic schedule in February would’ve meant a rusty Camel team at tourney time.

East Central
Casper Natrona was still the gold standard within District 2-B—definitely the #1 seed—although they did lose a game to Douglas during the regular season, which is reason enough for the Rat to believe that the Bearcats would’ve been the #2 seed out of the district. Lusk and Glenrock would’ve battled for the #3 seed and the trip to state. Call me Homer, but I’d give the slight edge to Lusk as they posted a nifty W/L record, their first career 1000 point scorer in Burnaugh and Glenrock’s February schedule might’ve meant the Sheepherders would’ve been rusty entering district tourney play as they played only two games during the final three weeks, both losses.

Southeast
The same question abounds in this district as it did during the previous four seasons: Who will attend the State Tourney along with Cheyenne and Laramie? First off, don’t let the sub-.500 records of the two largest schools in 2-A fool you, both were better than all the rest in the Southeast. In fact, the Cheyenne JV rang up wins versus most of the varsities from the East Laramie Conference from what can be found. Had there been a state tourney, Cheyenne would’ve been the No. 1 seed and Laramie No. 2. The Plainsmen were weaker than usual but still managed wins over all Wyoming competition except Cheyenne, Rock Springs and Rawlins three of the top teams in the state that year. Which team would be the No. 3 seed from #2-A? Wheatland seems the best choice with Veteran and LaGrange other possibilities. I mentioned an article from the Evanston paper that said that the Red Devils would play a team from District 2 for the at-large seed in the bracket at Casper [I would’ve chosen Greybull from District 3, personally] and one wonders if it might’ve been LaGrange, given their two wins over Torrington. The article didn’t mention if it was from 2-A or 2-B.

The District Tourney format was changed back to a full bracket instead of dividing the Big Horn Basin into the north/south split that was used during the 34-35 season. Originally 18 teams were expected to compete in the tourney at Lovell (Ft. Washakie and Burlington were added to the tourney) but Riverton and Meeteetse did not participate. Worland took the District #3 tourney with an overtime win over tourney host Lovell. Thermopolis garnered the 3rd seed with a win over Greybull, quite the disappointment for Greybull which had posted the best record heading into the tourney.

Southwest
District #1 was probably the toughest district in the state. Returning most of the 34-35 state championship team, Coach Okie Blanchard’s Rock Springs Tigers had the ponies to win it all. Standing in their way was Rawlins which had lost both the away and home games to the Tigers during the season. Rawlins got the job done at the district tourney in Green River, however, derailing Rock Springs’ perfect season and snapping a 26-game win streak in the process. Kemmerer finished as the #3 seed with a win over Evanston. In the B portion of the tourney, Cokeville defeated host Green River. Coach Okie tried his darndest to schedule an ersatz state tourney with Rawlins, Thermopolis, Worland, and Cheyenne (and others) but was torpedoed by state health officials.
