Noteworthy Events of the 1973-1974 Season
1. What’s new?—The only major change was in Class C, where the classification lost three teams to the Class B ranks. Encampment, Medicine Bow and Rock River all cited scheduling issues as the reason to move from the smallest school category to Class B play. All three joined the Texas Trail Conference, and the three teams were grouped with Glendo, Glenrock, Hanna-Elk Mountain, Saratoga and St. Mary’s to form its Western Division. These eight teams rarely played against Eastern Division teams and in fact had their own district tourney separate from their eastern counterparts. The three newbies, more or less constant visitors to the Class C state tourney over the past decade, were unable to qualify in the new classification.
2. A Different State Tourney Format—While Classes AA and A had the same setup as in previous years, Classes B and C found a different format awaiting play in Laramie. In Class B it was decided to use a 16-team bracket (as it last did in 1970), a change from the 12-team format used in the previous three Class B state tourneys. Only first-round losers qualified for consolation play, and if a team won on Wednesday and lost on Thursday, it would exit Laramie with a 1-1 mark. A number of Class B coaches were not pleased with that aspect and aired their discomfort about the format in the Laramie paper prior to the opening round. “I hate to see a team win one then lose one and be out,” complained Midwest coach Hal Loghry. “What it amounts to is that two district champions will be eliminated in the second round,” opined St. Mary’s coach Pat Durrow. Despite over half of the 16 teams not being happy with the setup, the WHSAA did not change the tourney format at that late date.
The Class C bracket was increased from six to eight teams. In fact, ALL eight Class C teams were included in the state tourney, and therefore did not need to stage district tourneys prior to the state tournament.
Another change for all classes was the elimination of the week between regional/district play and the state tourney. This week of no competition had been a scheduling constant since the 1930s, and by eliminating it, the season shortened by seven days.
3. Number One Comes from County #1—Casper Kelly Walsh won the school’s first state hoops championship, besting crosstown rival Casper Natrona in the finals. During the regular season, Kelly Walsh dominated the Class AA East, dropping only one conference game. The Trojans finished ahead of Casper Natrona by two games and the two Cheyenne high schools by four. Pollsters never could fully embrace Kelly Walsh due to three-time champion Rock Springs garnering a majority of first-place votes, so the Tigers kept their lofty No. 1 ranking heading into tourney play with KW in the No. 2 position. Kelly Walsh took the regional crown with a low-scoring game against Sheridan and dispatched Natrona in the regional final. Rock Springs did a similar number in their regional and most expected the two teams to eventually square off in Laramie for championship banner. It was not to be as No. 3 ranked Casper Natrona upset Rock Springs in the semis, setting up the first all-from-one-city state tourney finale. Kelly Walsh was up to the task and defeated Natrona for the fourth time that season to capture the first-place trophy.

5. A Big Horn Basin Winner in Class A—It had been over a decade since the Class A champion hailed from the NW corner of the state. It was 1963, to be exact, when Lovell claimed the top spot. Thermopolis’ road to the state title was somewhat of a surprise, as the Bobcats were ranked No. 4 or 5 among the 14 Class A-sized schools by the end of regular-season competition. Pollsters showed more love for Torrington, voting the Trailblazers to the No. 1 position while SW schools Star Valley, Kemmerer and Green River were considered a notch or two above the Hot Springs County crew, depending on the poll. Thermop was fortunate to exit the regional in Evanston as a No. 3 seed, winning by four over Evanston, losing by one to Green River, then winning two in a row over Lovell and Kemmerer. At state, Thermopolis ruined Buffalo’s try for a three-peat championship in the opener, easily brushed aside Star Valley in the semis and smoked Torrington in the finale. All the victories in Laramie were by double digits, and it was obvious the Bobcats played their best on that final weekend of the season, bringing home the school’s third state basketball championship.

7. Huntley Backs up Class B Bragging Rights—It was a 16-team state tourney bracket, and prognosticators had opined that the Class B state tourney champion would most likely be from the Texas Trail Conference. Seven Texas Trail teams—four from the east and three from the west—helped to fill out the bracket, and regular season east co-champions Huntley and Albin along with west co-champs Glenrock and St. Mary’s were all tagged as championship contenders. Pollsters tabbed defending state champion Huntley as No. 1 heading into state tourney play, but the other three Texas Trail co-champs could be found among the top five, depending on the poll. Only Tongue River and Moorcroft managed to elbow their way into the poll, based on their excellent marks in NE district play. At state, after the Wednesday opener, six of the seven Texas Trail teams had made the quarterfinals. The semifinals were composed of all the Texas Trail co-champs: Huntley versus St. Mary’s and Glenrock against Albin. Albin eked out a two-point win while Huntley played two overtimes to win by three. The Class B finale was a slow-down affair with Huntley winning by two, 24-22. The Cardinals had repeated as state champion, the school’s second state title.

9. Farson-Eden Bags First State Championship—With the three traditionally Class C teams—Encampment, Medicine Bow and Rock River—moving up to Class B competition, the state had only eight Class C teams. The bracket was increased from six to eight so all the teams were welcomed to Laramie, and no district play was needed. Pollsters had defending champion Snake River—called Morrow High School at the time—ranked No. 1 in both polls, but Farson-Eden was close behind at No. 2 or 3, be it AP or UPI voting. North schools Burlington (No. 2 or 3) and Deaver-Frannie (No. 4 in both) were also considered as potential finalists. Three of the four teams won their state tourney opener, the exception being Deaver-Frannie, which lost by one to Ten Sleep. Farson-Eden easily handled Burlington in the semis as did Snake River over Ten Sleep, setting up the Pronghorns/Rattlers finale. The two schools had split their regular-season games, each winning at home. Farson-Eden won the rubber game by almost 20 points to secure the school’s first state championship and ending the Rattlers’ shot at a repeat title.

14. I Can’t Drive 55—The winter of the 1973-74 season was a total downer due to the energy crunch, which was initiated by OPEC nations. Crude oil prices soared, lines at filling stations became lengthy and buying gasoline on Sunday was difficult as most stations were voluntarily closed to keep gasoline quotas available for the Monday-thru-Friday work crowd. To save energy, civic Christmas lights/displays were limited to being lit only during the final week prior to Christmas. The WHSAA looked seriously at limiting travel (since fuel costs had doubled), even considering playing varsity-only contests and scrapping all JV and C-squad competition. State culminating activities were also considered on the chopping block to begin with.
State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Robert Schrader, had even suggested that interschool activities occur only on Fridays, no trips would exceed 200 miles and that only school approved or public transportation be allowed to send participants to a game. The state school board association defeated a resolution to do away with half the activities, and at a WHSAA meeting in mid-January, it was decided to let individual schools act to solve their own problems, since the effect of the fuel shortage varied so much around the state. Beginning in March, the national speed limit was set at 55 miles per hour, making even the most angelic Wyoming driver a speed demon in most cases. Activity buses had their governors set to 55 mph, and trips to regional and state tourneys became longer.
15. Cheyenne Central Condemned—It wasn’t really a basketball story—games continued as scheduled at Storey Gymnasium—but the upper floors of Cheyenne Central were condemned as a firetrap by the state fire marshal. Students were given an extra week of Christmas vacation while the bottom floor was brought up to code and classes resumed there as well as in Storey Gym, nearby Clark Elementary and using split shifts to accommodate the displaced students. The new Central wasn’t ready for use until the 1976-77 school year, a three-year inconvenience for students enrolled there.
16. Low Scores—Casper Kelly Walsh’s state title was an impressive accomplishment as the Trojans racked up a stellar 21-2 mark under head coach Rodger Hessler. Coach Hessler’s crew could win up-tempo games with the offense, scoring up to 70 points on one occasion. More often Coach H’s team would play a controlled, ball-possession game, relying on the state’s top defense to reduce the need for a wide-open scoring attack. The Trojans were not afraid to play stall ball as well, and many of their games harkened back to scores from the 1930s. The team won two regular-season games with point totals of 36 and 32. During regional and state tourney play, the team won one game scoring 33 points [while holding Worland to 9 points], and two more with 20-plus point totals, 25 and 23 points.
Sheridan was the victim in both 20-point games, in the regional semifinals and state semifinals, losing 23-21 in overtime and 25-21, respectively. In the latter game, KW took the opening tip and played ball control for 7 minutes, 59 seconds. With one second left, a KW player was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 1-0 first quarter lead. Sheridan never really touched the ball until the second quarter. The Broncs rallied for a 6-2 halftime edge, and KW played somewhat more up tempo to close the third quarter down two, 16-14. The fourth quarter was nip and tuck and came down to better free throw shooting by the Trojans who hit seven of 11 from the charity stripe to the Broncs’ one of six. Only one substitution was made in the game, by the way, when a KW player fouled out with about two minutes left in the game.
17. Where in blazes is Morrow?—Was the question many were asking as the school’s scores were reported on the AP and UPI wire services. The Little Snake River Rattlers, defending state Class C champions and top-ranked among pollsters almost all season, were now referred to as Morrow High School. The school was named after a beloved educator, principal and administrator, W. Wesly Morrow. This represents somewhat of an oddity as few schools in the state went by names other than the city or county the school was located in, unless the municipality has more than one high school. (Exception: Green River High was called Lincoln High until 1960 or so.) Many small Idaho high schools have names that don’t always reflect the town or county, sometimes frustrating for researchers. My findings for this year and future years will list the school as Snake River, so the data dovetails with years prior to the year of the (temporary) name change.
18. Female referee—Wendy Louise Davis found the task of becoming a basketball referee quite easy. Applying as W. L. Davis, she submitted an application to the WHSAA and was eventually certified. The WHSAA found out after the fact that W. L. Davis was a woman. Miss Davis, a UWyo student from Mt. View, said she couldn’t find anything in the WHSAA rule book saying women couldn’t become referees, but just to be sure, submitted only her first and middle initials instead of her full name. “I was shocked how easy it was. They sent me a packet that included a test and a rule book. I sent the test and a $5 check back and that was all there was to it.” After being graded by three certified officials in a real game, Davis was able to officiate at women’s games and a few boys’ junior high games. She wasn’t able to referee boys’ high school games since she hadn’t attended any of the rules clinics the WHSAA requires.

It was pretty much a two-horse regular-season race with Moorcroft finishing NE play with a perfect mark, two games ahead of Tongue River. Three teams were clustered around .500 as tourney play beckoned in Newcastle: Arvada-Clearmont, Upton and Midwest. Semifinalists were the top dogs along with Arvada-Clearmont and Upton. Tongue River and Moorcroft both won to set up the inevitable third clash between the two powers. Arvada-Clearmont and Upton were exiled to Saturday morning eliminators and neither team qualified for state, as only three from the district would qualify. Both teams lost to Midwest. In Laramie, both Moorcroft and Midwest found difficulty, exiting Albany County with 0-2 marks. Tongue River won the Wednesday opener but lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Huntley by five.

East/Southeast
In Class AA, the two Natrona County high schools reigned over the east region with Casper Kelly Walsh taking regular-season honors by two games over Casper Natrona. The two Cheyenne high schools finished in a tie for third place. Come tourney time, four east region teams were ranked in the polls. West powerhouse Rock Springs, vying for a fourth straight title and sporting the best overall Class AA record, was ranked No. 1, but Kelly Walsh, Casper Natrona, Sheridan and Cheyenne Central held the No. 2 thru 5 positions in the AP poll. (UPI had Riverton at No. 4, however.) Kelly Walsh captured the east region title in Gillette besting Sheridan in the semis and Natrona in the finals. Sheridan captured the No. 3 seed with a close win over Cheyenne Central. At state, three east schools made the semis: Kelly Walsh, Casper Natrona and Sheridan. Kelly Walsh edged Sheridan while Casper Natrona ended Rock Springs’ state tourney win streak, setting up an all-Casper finale. The Trojans won their fourth consecutive game over the Mustangs to garner their first state hoops title. Sheridan lost to Rock Springs in the third-place game, while Cheyenne Central bagged the consolation trophy with a win over Worland.
For the first time in a number of years, the state Class A title didn’t have Absaraka Conference ties. The six remaining teams in the east were relatively close in ability, save for Newcastle’s winless season. Torrington and Wheatland tied for regular-season honors and two-time defending champion Buffalo was a game behind. At the east regional in Newcastle, Torrington and Wheatland drew byes while Douglas defeated Lusk and Buffalo bested Newcastle. In the semis, Torrington won easily over Douglas while Buffalo sprung upset No. 1 by breezing by Wheatland. Lusk surprised Wheatland—upset No. 2—in a Saturday morning eliminator and squared off with Douglas again for the No. 3 and 4 seeds, losing again to the Bearcats. Top-ranked in statewide polls, Torrington took regional honors and the No. 1 seed over Buffalo. In Laramie, Douglas and Lusk were eliminated in two days, exiting with 0-2 marks. Buffalo lasted all three days, losing their opener but coming back to cop consolation honors. Torrington did make it to the finals, but lost to No. 4-ranked Thermopolis in the title tilt by 11 points.
Three traditionally Class C teams moved up a classification to enter Texas Trail Conference play. The three teams—Encampment, Medicine Bow and Rock River—were added to the west portion of the conference with Hanna, Saratoga, Glenrock, Glendo and St. Mary’s. The east was comprised of Albin, Burns, Goshen Hole, Guernsey-Sunrise, Huntley, LaGrange, Lingle-Ft. Laramie and Pine Bluffs. The east would send four teams to state, the west three in the 16-team state tourney bracket. Huntley and Albin took regular-season honors in the east, tying for first place with 13-1 marks, each winning at home versus the other. Guernsey-Sunrise and Burns tied for third. At the district tourney in Torrington, both Albin and Huntley made the semis, along with Guernsey-Sunrise and LaGrange. The conference co-champs won to make the finals while Guernsey and surprise consolation winner Lingle-Ft. Laramie qualified on Saturday to earn the ticket to Laramie. By virtue of a coin flip, the Vikings were the No. 3 seed, the Doggers No. 4. Huntley took the district title over Albin.
Glenrock and St. Mary’s battled for regular-season honors, and like their eastern counterparts, tied for bragging rights with 13-1 marks, again winning at home against the other. The west district tourney was held in Rawlins, and Glenrock, Medicine Bow, St. Mary’s and Saratoga won openers, qualifying for the semis. The conference co-champs won their way into the district finale while Hanna-Elk Mountain emerged from the Saturday eliminators with the No. 3 seed. Glenrock topped St. Mary’s by 11 for the district top seed.
At state, six of the seven Texas Trail schools won their openers. Hanna-Elk Mountain was the only school to lose on Wednesday and exited the following day by losing to Mt. View. Lingle-Ft. Laramie and Guernsey-Sunrise lost their quarterfinal games, which ended their time in Albany County with 1-1 records. The four semifinalists were Glenrock versus Albin and Huntley against St. Mary’s, the cream of the two Texas Trail divisions. The east was a tad stronger, winning tight games over the west teams: Albin by two and Huntley by three in double overtime. Glenrock and St. Mary’s met on Saturday for third place—another squeaker—that the Herders won by a single point. Huntley captured its second consecutive Class B state championship by topping Albin by two in a slowdown 24-22 title game.
Class C Chugwater played an independent schedule, and, since all the Class C teams were automatically state tourney entrants, took their 4-11 regular season mark to Laramie. The Buffaloes were defeated by Burlington on Thursday and Kaycee on Friday to exit Laramie with an 0-2 tourney record.

Rock Springs continued its run of success in the Class AA west, capturing its fourth consecutive regular-season title, fourth straight regional crown and medaling at state, although it was a disappointing third-place finish after three championships. The Tigers rang up an awe-inspiring 49-1 regular-season mark versus Big Horn Basin Conference foes (and Rawlins), stood perfect in regional play and had won 12 of 13 state tourney games during that time span. Riverton finished second in regular season action with Lander the only other team at the .500 mark. The regional in Cody proved beneficial for the hosts, as the Broncs upset Lander on day one, Riverton in the semis and played the champs within six in the finale. Lander rebounded to take third, defeating Worland after the two teams qualified with Saturday morning wins. At state, Lander and Cody were eliminated with 0-2 marks on Friday. Worland and Rock Springs lasted all three days. The Warriors lost to eventual state champion Kelly Walsh on Thursday, eliminated Cody on Friday and lost in the consolation finals to Cheyenne Central. No. 1-ranked Rock Springs did not four-peat, knocked out in the semis by finalist Casper Natrona, but still exited Laramie with a 2-1 mark.
The three BHB Class A teams played independent schedules. Had BHB Conference standings been kept, Lovell and Thermopolis would’ve tied for the top spot with 3-1 marks, losing on the road versus each other. The three teams were combined with the SW teams for the regional in Evanston. Greybull was eliminated in two games and Lovell in three, while Thermopolis played four games to capture the No. 3 seed. At state, the Bobcats caught fire and polished off defending champion Buffalo in the opener, Star Valley in the semis, and top-ranked Torrington in the finals. All victories were by double digits, somewhat of a surprise for the No. 4-ranked crew from Hot Springs County. It was the third hoops championship for Thermopolis, its first since 1954.
It was quite the battle in the Class B BHB, as five teams posted marks of .500 or better. Cowley took regular-season honors by a game over Basin and Byron and three games over Meeteetse and Wind River. At the NW district tourney in Thermopolis, one semifinal pairing was Basin against Byron, while Cowley and Wind River contested the other. Byron topped Basin while Wind River upset Cowley. Byron won over Wind River on Saturday to take the district. Cowley had to eliminate Dubois and then Basin to take the No. 3 seed. At state, Cowley was through with play on Thursday, exiting Laramie with an 0-2 mark. Wind River lasted another day, posting a 1-2 mark. Byron lasted all four days, losing its opener then winning two to make the consolation finals. The Eagles lost that game to Mt. View and left Laramie 2-2.
Burlington was tops among the five northern Class C teams. The Huskies easily won the regular-season title with an .800 win percentage. Deaver-Frannie was the only other team above .500 and that was by only one game. There was no regional/district tourney as all five BHB teams joined the three other Wyoming small school teams in Laramie to fill out the eight-team state tourney bracket. Manderson-Hyattville was the first to be eliminated, exiting on Friday with an 0-2 mark. Kaycee and Ten Sleep were a bit more successful, winning one game of three but failing to secure a trophy. Deaver-Frannie dropped its opener but rallied with two wins to capture consolation honors, while Burlington took home third-place kudos, losing in the semis to eventual champion Farson-Eden.

Southwest
Kemmerer ran the regular-season table in the SW Class A, posting eight wins in home/away action versus the other four SW teams. Green River was in second, three games behind the Rangers, while Star Valley broke even at .500. With the addition of the three Big Horn Basin Class A teams, the regional in Evanston qualified four teams for the state tourney. Semifinalists were Green River versus Thermopolis while Kemmerer battled Star Valley. Green River won a one-point squeaker while Star Valley upset Kemmerer. Star Valley stayed hot in the finale to take the No. 1 seed. Kemmerer won a Saturday qualifier but lost to Thermopolis for the No. 3 spot. In Laramie, all three SW teams lasted the entire tourney. Kemmerer lost its opener, won on Friday and lost to Buffalo for consolation honors. Star Valley and Green River won their initial games, lost on Friday in the semis and the squared off on Saturday for third place. Green River exacted a bit of revenge for their regional loss to the Braves by defeating Star Valley by eight points.
The two Uinta County schools, Lyman and Mt. View, were tops during the regular season, tying for first place with 6-2 mark. Big Piney was two games back at even .500. The five Class B teams met in Evanston to qualify three teams for the 16-team state tourney bracket. Lyman had the easiest time, earning the bye and winning two games to take the SW district title. Big Piney was the loser to Lyman in the championship game, having upset Mt. View in their opener. Mt. View battled back by eliminating Pinedale and Cokeville to garner the No. 3 slot. At state, Lyman was the only team to win its Wednesday opener but then lost to St. Mary’s on Thursday, ending its stay in the Gem City. Big Piney lost on Wednesday and Thursday, exiting with an 0-2 record. Mt. View saw the most success, losing its opener but winning on Thursday and Friday to face Byron in the consolation finals. The Buffalos defeated the Eagles by six to take home the consolation hardware.
Both Farson-Eden and Snake River (called Morrow at this juncture) played independent schedules for the regular season. The Pronghorns played some of their games against SW Class B schools, all except Cokeville, faring well with a 2-3 mark versus the somewhat larger schools. Defending champion Snake River still scheduled long-time opponents Medicine Bow, Encampment and Rock River, although all three had moved up to Class B play. The two SW Class C schools split their season series, each winning at home. Since there was no district play, all eight Class C schools qualified for state. Each team excelled, winning on Thursday, then Friday and paired off again each other on Saturday for all the marbles. Farson-Eden won handily, its first state hoops title.
