Noteworthy Events of the 1971-1972 Season
1. A More Familiar Look—After the radical changes to the district/regional and state tourneys the year before, sanity prevailed and things moved back to a familiar format. The state tourney brackets for Class AA and A were expanded from four to eight teams, the Class B bracket grew from eight to 12, while Class C stayed the same with four teams qualifying for state. Instead of two sites for contesting the championships—it had been held in Lander and Rock Springs in March of 1971—it was back to Laramie for all four titles to be decided. There also would be no Super Tourney for the AA, A, B and C winners.
2. Who Moved Up, Down or Away—In Class AA, things downsized from 16 to 14 teams. Rawlins was moved to the West and joined Rock Springs in playing a mostly Big Horn Basin slate of games. Those two teams plus BHB teams Cody, Lander, Powell, Riverton and Worland comprised AA West; both the Casper and Cheyenne high schools, Gillette, Laramie and Sheridan squared off in the AA East.
Two BHB teams, Lovell and Thermopolis, joined Greybull in the Class A ranks from Class AA. The three BHB teams scheduled many games with old conference foes and Greybull ceased playing Absaraka Conference contests in which it had competed the previous year. The three teams were bracketed with the three Class A NE schools, Buffalo, Douglas and Newcastle, come tourney time in Buffalo.
Class B saw a few subtle shifts. Meeteetse moved back into the Class B grouping, making the NW district a seven-team scramble for the three seeds to the state tourney. Arvada and Clearmont consolidated into one school and played in the eight-team NE district as a Class B entry. Twelve teams still comprised the Texas Trail in the SE, although Saratoga eschewed the conference schedule of games, opting to play a mélange of area and out-of-state schools instead. The SE district did merit four invites to the state tourney, but the bottom eight teams had to square off in four play-in games, needing a win to keep playing or ending the season with a loss. The SW was unchanged with the usual five-team battle for two invites to state.
Class C was split like Class AA into two areas. Again the division was North/South instead of East/West. In the North, with Meeteetse reclassified, only five teams remained: Burlington, Deaver-Frannie, Kaycee, Manderson-Hyattville and Ten Sleep. The South had six teams: Chugwater, Encampment, Farson-Eden, Medicine Bow, Rock River and Snake River. Farson played its regular season against SW Class B schools instead of a complete slate of similar-sized opponents. Carpenter closed its high school, merging with Burns.
3. Rock Springs Repeats in Class AA—It was relatively smooth sailing for Rock Springs as the Tigers captured back-to-back titles with a veteran lineup. Playing in the Class AA West region, there were few hiccups for Rock Springs as the regular season played out. A two-point win at Riverton and a loss at Casper Natrona—both in early January—were their only stumbles, but Rock Springs remained atop the Class AA polls all season long. Sixteen other wins were of the double-digit variety. Earning the bye for their perfect AA West mark, the Tigers edged Cody by four in the semis and beat Riverton by six in the regional final. In Laramie, nemesis Natrona was avenged in a two-point pants-wetter. On Friday, Rock Springs squared off against Cheyenne East, winning by a dozen points. The other Cheyenne high school awaited the defending champs in the finale, and Rock Springs responded with an 89-80 title-securing win over Cheyenne Central. Rock Springs was an impressive 46-2 during its double championship run, this one marking the school’s 11th state basketball title.

5. Buffalo Bags a Title—Only in Class A was there no repeat champion, although Green River did its best to claim another, falling just short in the championship game. Buffalo had put in a good but not stellar regular season, ceding its spot as defending Absaraka Conference champs to Newcastle, finishing tied for third with Torrington. Fortunately for the Bison, Buffalo was the host site for the combined NE/NW A regional, and the Bison enjoyed the home cooking and familiar beds as the tourney played out. No. 1 seed Newcastle and Buffalo merited first-round byes in the six-team bracket—seeding was done by records versus Class A opponents—and faced BHB competition in the semis. Thermopolis upset Newcastle while Buffalo won easily over Lovell. Buffalo took the top seed the following night by romping to a lopsided win over the Bobcats. At state, Buffalo (ranked No. 3 or 5) easily won its opener over unranked Star Valley and then cruised by (No. 2/4) University Prep on Friday to face top-ranked (in both polls) Green River. Possibly karma was on the Thundering Herd’s side as Buffalo had entered the two previous state tourneys as the top-ranked Class A team, but it finished with the consolation trophy in ’70 and as runners-up in ’71. This time, they were up to the task as Buffalo stampeded the Wolves for the state championship, the school’s first hoops title.

7. Burns Bests the Class B Batch—The Burns Broncs’ road to a repeat championship was anything but smooth. For one, the Texas Trail Conference was loaded for bear, as Albin, LaGrange and Hanna-Elk Mountain all posted double-digit wins in conference play. Albin took regular season bragging rights with two wins over Burns, which ended up two games back in second place. Burns’ only other loss was to Class A St. Mary’s, but the three losses were enough to convince pollsters to rank Albin ahead of the defending champs, along with Mt. View and Moorcroft—and by tourney time Burns was ranked No. 4 statewide. Burns found sweet revenge in the SE district finals with a win over Albin for the No. 1 SE seed. The state Class B tourney bracket had 12 teams, and Burns garnered a Wednesday bye along with Mt. View, Midwest and No. 5-ranked Dubois. Burns faced conference foe Hanna-Elk Mountain on Thursday and won by four. In the semis, Burns bested Dubois by eight points. Their opponent in the finale was Texas Trail opposition again, this time LaGrange. The Longhorns were no match for the Broncs as Burns rolled to the state championship again, back-to-back titles, the school’s third hoops title.

9. Deaver/Frannie Does it Again—About the only thing that was the same as the 1970-71 season was the state tourney Class C bracket, which remained at four teams. Of course, consolidation around the state during the past decade plus had reduced the classification to 11 teams—six in the south and five up north—so a four-team bracket made sense. Medicine Bow was the darling of the pollsters, having torched the south a la General Sherman with nary a defeat. The Wranglers even had regular-season wins over three of the north contenders – Burlington, Deaver-Frannie and Ten Sleep—solidifying their hold on the No. 1 ranking. As it happened the year before, both district tourneys resulted in surprises. Favorite Medicine Bow lost to Encampment in the finals and eventually qualified for the No. 2 seed by winning a challenge game versus Snake River. Ditto up north where favorite Deaver lost to Burlington in the finale and then bested Ten Sleep in another challenge game. At state, both Medicine Bow and Deaver won their Friday openers, and the Trojans repeated as state champions on Saturday, comfortably defeating the Wranglers for the title. It was Deaver-Frannie’s second state title.

13. Coaching can be a pain in the—gut—Gary Johnson, head coach of Deaver-Frannie, fought an ulcer all season long that caused him to be hospitalized when his team was on the road to Rock River and Medicine Bow in December. The plucky Trojans barely managed a split, winning in overtime against the Longhorns and dropping a close one to the Wranglers sans their mentor. Johnson again missed games in January for the same problematic ulcer, but rallied to be on the sidelines at tourney time where Deaver-Frannie defended its state title from the year before.
14. Roof falling in—The sky was falling in Wheatland; well, not the sky, but the roof on the WHS gym was deemed unsafe—it was falling in, according to the Platte County Record—and the game with St. Mary’s had to be moved to a different Platte County venue. Glendo provided the gym and the Bulldogs dropped their final game of the regular season to the Gaels, 61-56.
15. Season shortened—The WHSAA shortened the length of the upcoming 1972-73 basketball season, starting play one week later than the 1971-72 season. Eastern Class AA officials wanted to lengthen the season somewhat but were turned down.
16. Call the cops—UW campus police were called in when the Burns Broncs were in the midst of cutting down the nets from their repeat championship. The scrappy Broncs did get the net, but only because they had it halfway down before they were stopped. This matter eventually led to the WHSAA awarding of the state championship trophy with a net attached so there’d be no delay of play for the ensuing championship games (or fast breaks being slowed by a ball caught high in a brand-new, unstretched net.)
17. Halftime histrionics—According to the Riverton Ranger RHS freshman coach Mike Harris “must have given a dandy locker-slamming dandy (halftime lecture) Thursday evening. His charges went on to defeat cross-county rival Lander 63-54. Harris went to the hospital for minor surgery on a broken hand and dislocated knuckles.”

The three Class A NE teams all realized a measure of success for the season. Newcastle won the Absaraka Conference title, was ranked No. 1 at times in the polls as well as beating both area teams twice to garner the top seed in the NE/NW combined regional in Buffalo. Buffalo’s regular season didn’t quite match the previous two seasons where the Thundering Herd ended February atop both polls as No. 1, but the Bison still got some pollster love, ranking No. 3 or 5, depending on the wire service. Douglas saved its best hoops for tourney time, which is when coaches want their squads to post peak performances. Buffalo and Newcastle both had first-round byes for the regional while Douglas lost its opener by a whisker to Lovell. Friday night, Buffalo made the championship game with a win over Lovell. Newcastle was upset by Thermopolis in the other semifinal. Douglas played Newcastle for the No. 3 seed on Saturday, upsetting the Dogies by five. The hosts bombed Thermopolis for the regional title. At state, Douglas lasted two days, dropping games to UPrep and Star Valley. Buffalo dispatched Star Valley in its opener and pasted University Prep in the semis by 21 points. Defending champion, top-ranked Green River, was looking to win the title in back-to-back fashion, as ’71 champs Rock Springs, Burns and Deaver/Frannie had done. Buffalo was up to the challenge, winning the state title in a 66-57 score. It was Buffalo’s first state hoops title.
In the Class B portion of the NE, eight teams battled for Powder River Conference supremacy, as Arvada/Clearmont consolidated into one high school and competed within the classification. The regular-season title was won by Moorcroft, which topped second place Midwest by two games. In third was Tongue River, followed by Big Horn in fourth. The NE region tourney in Buffalo would send three teams to the state tourney in Laramie, and it was figured the trio would come from top four. Upton provided the initial shocker to the status quo, upsetting No. 1 seed Moorcroft in the semifinals, while Midwest edged Hulett in the other Friday game. Moorcroft battled back in the Saturday eliminator, ousting Tongue River and then throttling Big Horn to garner the No. 3 state tourney seed. Upton lost by one to district champ Midwest. At state, all three teams had truncated stays in the Gem City. On Wednesday, Moorcroft lost a one-point squeaker to Albin while Upton easily handled Meeteetse. Midwest had a bye on Wednesday as a No. 1 seed but lost on Thursday to LaGrange, ending its stay in Laramie with a 0-1 mark. Day 2 was bad as well for Upton as Dubois ended the Bobcats’ state tourney stay at 1-1. Friday, Moorcroft lost another one-point heartbreaker, this time to Byron in the consolation semis, an 0-2 mark for the Wolves’ efforts at state.

Southeast
Class AA East was an absolute dogfight with five teams in the race until the final week of February. As it played out, Cheyenne Central took regular-season honors by one game over Casper Natrona and Cheyenne East. Kelly Walsh and Laramie were two games back. Campbell County’s and Sheridan’s seasons were forgettable. Which team was hottest heading into East regional play in Sheridan? That was most likely conference champ Cheyenne Central. The Indians carried a perfect mark in February, save for their final loss versus the crosstown rival T-Birds and were the beneficiaries of the first-round bye in the seven-team bracket. Laramie fell to Central in the semis while East sent Natrona to Saturday morning play with a four-point win. Central avenged its late season loss to East with a convincing 40-point W. Laramie bested Natrona to sew up the No. 3 and 4 East seeds. At state, all four East teams stayed three days. Natrona lost its opener but won on Friday and Saturday to claim consolation honors. Cheyenne East and Laramie lost their semifinal games and squared off for the third-place trophy, a T-Bird win. Central (ranked No. 2/4 in the AP/UPI polls) couldn’t handle top-ranked Rock Springs in the championship finale, settling for the runners-up spot.
Class A schools in the SE and NE played in the eight-team Absaraka Conference, which was won by Newcastle. University Prep finished a game behind, while Buffalo and Torrington were two games back. Since the NE teams weren’t included in the SE district tourney at Cheyenne St. Mary’s, University Prep received the bye with the top W-L mark among SE teams. Prep breezed through the tourney, topping St. Mary’s and surprise finalist Lusk to take the No. 1 SE seed. Torrington found tough luck, losing to Lusk and Wheatland. St. Mary’s topped Wheatland twice in the tourney for the No. 3 seed. At state, all three SE teams lasted three days. St. Mary’s dropped its opener, won on Friday and lost to Star Valley in the consolation finale. Cinderella Lusk, the only unranked team to make the semis, won on Thursday, lost on Friday, then defeated University Prep for third place. The Buckaroos—ranked No. 2 or 4— had a disappointing tourney losing to Buffalo and Lusk, teams they had defeated three of four times during the regular season.
The 12-team Texas Trail Conference was the state’s best area for Class B hoops, and several teams shined during the regular season, most notably defending champion Burns, Albin, LaGrange and Hanna. The nastiest part of the SE B district tourney in Torrington were the loser-out play-in games on the first Wednesday of March. Glendo, Goshen Hole, Guernsey and Saratoga had their seasons ended on that day’s play. The top four teams ended up making the semis, which had LaGrange versus Albin while Burns played Hanna. Albin and Burns both won to set up the SE championship, while Hanna and LaGrange entered Saturday morning eliminators. Hanna took the No. 3 seed with a win over Glenrock and LaGrange eliminated Huntley in overtime for the No. 4 seed. (Hanna and LaGrange didn’t play a second Saturday game versus each other.) Burns avenged two losses to Albin with a championship win. At state, Burns received a bye in the 12-team bracket. Albin, LaGrange and Hanna all won their Wednesday openers.
Hanna had the bad luck to face Burns on Thursday and lost by four, ending the Miners’ season. Albin (ranked No. 1 or 3) was defeated that day as well, losing to Mt. View (ranked No. 2 or 1) and the Wildcats were done for the season, as well. Unranked LaGrange and (No. 4 ranked) Burns won on both Thursday and Friday, setting up an all-Texas Trail championship finale. Burns repeated the feat, capturing back-to-back state championships. It was the Broncs’ third hoops title.
Class C Chugwater played a schedule of mostly Class C teams from the SW along with a number of games versus JV and sophomore squads. Their data is found in the SW portion of the 1971-72 compilation.

Rat Droppings***Saratoga eschewed a Texas Trail schedule, playing an independent slate of games. The Panthers went 0-5 against four former Texas Trail foes, but still played in the SE B district qualifier.

Rat Droppings***The Casper Star-Tribune considered Chugwater a Class C independent, but I’ve included the Buffs’ W/L record with the other South C region teams, as they competed home and away versus all but Farson (which scheduled mostly SW Class B opposition). That data can be found in the SW compilation.

Northwest
Like the previous year, Rock Springs enjoyed play in the Class AA West, winning all its games against conference foes, losing one game to a AA East team, then dominating during tourney time to repeat as state champions. Big Horn Basin foe Riverton gave the Tigers two good scares, once in Fremont County and the other during the regional finals. No other conference foe came close to upsetting the Tigers, save for Cody, which came within six points in the regional semis. Lander and Cody finished as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, thus qualifying for the Big Dance in Laramie. Both teams were done by Friday, leaving UW with 0-2 state tourney marks. Riverton, the No. 2 seed, had better luck, winning one game on Friday after dropping its opener, but on Saturday exited the event with a 1-2 record. Rock Springs had a tricky ride through the bracket, as Casper Natrona—which had hung the Tigers’ only loss on them during the season—lost by only two points to the No. 1-ranked Tigers. Things became easier for the Tigers after that with easy wins over both Cheyenne schools. It was the 11th state hoops championship for Rock Springs.
The three Class A teams in the northwest played independent schedules, with an emphasis on contests between old, mostly Class AA, Big Horn Basin foes. Thermopolis played 10 games versus Class AA BHB teams, Lovell eight and Greybull three, in addition to games against each other. The three teams were combined with the three NE teams in the regional in Buffalo. Greybull dropped its opener to Thermopolis, then was eliminated by Douglas. Lovell won its opener but lost to the hosts and then Newcastle. Only Thermopolis survived the regional, upsetting top seed Newcastle in the semis and losing to Buffalo in the regional championship. At state, the Bobcats dropped two games to Absaraka teams to exit the tourney with a 0-2 mark.
What had been Byron’s domain for the past few years was truly in doubt come tourney time in the NW B district tourney in Shoshoni. Dubois entered the tourney as the top seed, winning the Big Horn Basin title by two games over Byron during the regular season. Byron, still respectable in second place, had lost two games to the Rams, plus games to Shoshoni and Meeteetse during the winter months. Dubois received the bye and faced the hosts in one semifinal. Byron squeaked by Basin in its opener and squared off against Cowley in the other semifinal. Both Dubois and Byron won, the Rams easily and the Eagles in a two-point squeaker, setting up the district final. Meeteetse, upset by Cowley in the opener, faced Cowley again for the No. 3 NW seed to state and avenged the Thursday loss. Dubois won by seven over Byron for the No. 1 seed. At state, all three teams lasted the duration of the tourney. Meeteetse and Byron faced each other for the consolation championship. Dubois faced defending champion Burns in the semis and lost by eight. The Rams came back to take third place with a victory over Mt. View.
The north in Class C had been a regular-season dogfight between three teams: Manderson-Hyattville, Ten Sleep and defending state champion Deaver-Frannie. Unfortunately, since the Class C state tourney bracket totaled four teams, only two would get to visit Laramie during tourney time. Deaver finished atop the regular season standings, two games ahead of Ten Sleep and Manderson. The district tourney in Thermopolis provided several shocker moments. Shock No. 1 was a lopsided semifinal loss by Manderson to Ten Sleep. Shock No. 2 was Burlington upsetting Deaver—the No. 2 Class C team in statewide polls—in the other semifinal. Burlington also figured in Shock No. 3 by defeating Ten Sleep for the district title on Saturday. Since Ten Sleep hadn’t played Deaver, a Monday qualifier was played in nearby Lovell for the No. 2 seed to the state tourney. The Trojans soundly defeated the Pioneers and kept alive the chance to repeat as state champs. In Laramie, both teams brought home trophies. Burlington copped third-place honors with a win over Encampment. Deaver-Frannie repeated as state champs, eking out a one-point W over Encampment and handily waxing No. 1-rated Medicine Bow for all the marbles, the Trojans’ second state hoops title.

Rawlins and Rock Springs played a Big Horn Basin AA schedule; that information is in the NW data.
Class A Green River repeated as regular-season champions, winning the title outright (instead of the previous season’s three-way tie) with a perfect 8-0 mark against the other four conference foes. The Wolves were beneficiaries, too, of being the host school for the SW regional and ranked No. 1 in both the AP and UPI polls. The regional tourney shook out as expected, with Green River clinching the No. 1 seed on Friday night with a three-point victory margin over Evanston. Star Valley and Evanston clashed on Saturday to determine the No. 2 seed and, although Evanston had defeated Star Valley twice during the regular season and earlier in the regional, unranked Star Valley provided quite the surprise with a 10-point win over the No. 2 (or No. 4) Red Devils, thereby garnering the ticket to Laramie. Both teams lasted all three days at state and both brought home trophies. Star Valley dropped its opener then won the next two to bag consolation honors. Green River won on Thursday and Friday and earned a chance to repeat as state champ against Buffalo. The Bison stampeded the Wolves, however, by nine points, and Green River ended up as runners-up. Class A was the only classification to not have a repeat champion.
In Class B, Mt. View had the ponies to take it all, as evidenced by its perfect record in the SW district and a No. 1 or 2 ranking in the state’s two press polls. The Buffalos found the going easy at the SW district tourney in Green River as they easily won both their games by double digits. For the other state tourney qualifier, Big Piney—after dropping their opener to Pinedale—stormed back to eliminate Cokeville and Lyman, then avenged the loss to Pinedale, taking the No. 2 seed. All three district tourney Ws by the Punchers were close ones. Big Piney didn’t have quite the same luck at state, dropping its opener to Hanna-Elk Mountain, then being eliminated by Meeteetse in the consolation semis. Mt. View enjoyed a bye in the 12-team bracket, then dispatched No. 1 (or 3) Albin on Thursday. Friday’s semifinal was lost to Texas Trail power LaGrange, and the battle for third place was lost to Dubois on Saturday. The two losses were the only losses to Wyoming teams all season long for Mt. View.
The Class C South was the purview of Medicine Bow, which ran the table on the other conference teams while No. 1 ranked in both media polls. Challengers were Encampment or Snake River, which finished second and third, respectively, several games in back of the Wranglers. The district tourney in Rawlins was a surprise to hoops fans and pollsters alike as Encampment handed Medicine Bow a 12-point shellacking for the district title and No. 1 seed to Laramie. The No. 2 seed wasn’t a guarantee as Medicine Bow had not played Snake River during the tourney, so a challenge game was arranged on Monday with the Rattlers. Medicine Bow won easily over Snake River to advance to state. Surprise No. 1 South seed Encampment lost a one-point pants wetter to Deaver-Frannie in Friday’s play while Medicine Bow defeated surprise No. 1 North seed Burlington in the other. On Saturday, Encampment lost to Burlington for third-place kudos while Medicine Bow lost by double digits to defending champs Deaver-Frannie.
