Noteworthy Events of the 1969-1970 Season
1. Redemption Song for the Mustangs—After spending most of the 1968-69 season ranked near or atop the best teams in the state, then failing to qualify for the state tourney, the Natrona County Mustangs started the 1969-70 season with blood in their eyes and a determination to complete some unfinished business. Led by the decade’s—1960s or 1970s, your choice—most dominant player, Ken Morgan, NCHS breezed through the regular season with a 17-1 mark. The south regional provided little in the way of opposition and NCHS qualified for state with two easy wins. In Laramie, No. 1 Casper squared off against No. 5 Powell, No. 2 Rock Springs, and No. 3 Sheridan. Rock Springs just managed—by nine points—to keep their loss to single digits, but the other two games were Mustang routs. It was Casper Natrona’s first title since Swede Erickson prowled the sidelines in 1955, its sixth overall.

3. Back-to-back for the Tigers—In spite of returning the state’s tallest player in 7-foot-3-inch Paul Kruse, the Lusk Tigers (actually the Niobrara County High School Tigers, the state’s ‘other’ NCHS) were facing a rebuilding season, having graduated a deep and talented senior class in May of 1969. Lusk still received love from the pollsters initially, but an early January road trip to Buffalo and Campbell County hung two losses on the Tigers and knocked them from atop the polls. Although Lusk later atoned for both losses with home wins, Buffalo assumed the top spot in the Class A ranks for the remainder of the season, posting a nifty 17-1 regular season record. Lusk hosted the SE district tourney and racked up two dominant wins. Campbell County surprised Buffalo in the NE/NW district finals and Jackson grabbed SW district honors. At state, No. 3 Lusk won over SW competition Star Valley and an excellent No. 2 Jackson team. In the finale, Lusk squared off against Absaraka foe No. 4 Campbell County and won by 11 points, capturing the school’s second state title.

5. Back-to-back for Byron—The state tourney again featured a 16-team bracket for Class B play, but pollsters and most fans believed that the path to the state championship banner meant dispatching a stellar Byron crew, one that returned most of its title-winning team from the previous season. In the SE, five Texas Trail teams posted double-digit conference wins—regular season champ Pine Bluffs racked up 12—and two other teams had nine Ws. Albin and Burns played for the SE title in Torrington, with the Wildcats winning. In the NE, Upton breezed through the regular season with a 17-1 mark and took the NE district title in Gillette over Tongue River. In the SW, Lyman, Cokeville, and Pinedale took turns defeating each other in conference play and Lyman copped the No. 1 seed with a close win over Pinedale in district play in Evanston. In the NW, Byron won 18 straight regular-season games and entered district play in Basin as the No. 1 seed. It was an odd tourney, as the Eagles defeated Wind River in a slowdown game, 25-12. In the district finale, Byron lost to the hosts by three points. At state, two district champs stepped aside early when Lyman lost its opener as did Upton. Semifinalists found Basin facing Albin while Byron squared off versus Cokeville. The two NW schools won easily, setting up another Big Horn Basin Class B state finale. Byron avenged its NW district loss with a 62-49 win over Basin for all the marbles. It was Byron’s fifth hoops state championship.

7. Ten Sleep racks up its third hoops title—With the addition of Burlington and Meeteetse to the Class C ranks, the NW/NE had six teams battling for the BHB conference title. Ten Sleep breezed through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 mark, atop of Deaver by three games and Meeteetse by four. In the SE, LaGrange posted a 6-0 conference mark, and in the SW, Rock River and Encampment tied for regular-season honors. In the final AP Class C poll, Rock River stood at No. 1 and Ten Sleep No. 2. District play went according to script, with Rock River, Ten Sleep and LaGrange all capturing district titles. At state, the three district champs all qualified for the semis, with the addition of Deaver. Rock River was bested by Ten Sleep while LaGrange edged Deaver. Deaver won against Rock River for third-place honors while Ten Sleep dispatched LaGrange in a five-point win, the Pioneers’ third state championship.

12. Sunday play at the State Tourney—A severe late winter storm in NW Wyoming altered tournament play in Laramie. Worland, Lovell, Ten Sleep, Deaver and Greybull were all stranded in Thermopolis and unable to make Thursday opening-round play. Class B—which had a 16-team bracket that necessitated Wednesday opening games—had all teams already in Laramie. They played their first round Wednesday and their second round on Thursday. Class B then had Friday off while Class C, A, and AA played their first-round games. Semifinal action for all classes was contested on Saturday and the consolation finals, third-place games and championship finals were held on Sunday. It was the first Sunday play since the 1930 state tourney.
13. Changes in the Class A, B and C ranks—In Class A, Greybull had the oddest schedule, again abandoned by most of its traditional Big Horn Basin teams, which were playing Class AA competition. Greybull, which would adopt a full Absaraka Conference the following season, managed to qualify for state tourney play with a third-place finish at the NE district tourney, possibly a Karmic result for enduring the cornucopia of different teams throughout Wyoming and Montana. In Class B, the Big Horn Basin lost several teams: Meeteetse and Burlington to Class C competition and the consolidation of Morton and Pavillion into Wind River High School. Class C lost Hillsdale, a consolidation with Burns.
14. Big Horn’s forfeit—Big Horn got dinged by the WHSAA for scheduling an extra game over the 18-game maximum. It was a pre-season scrimmage between Big Horn and Meeteetse. The game was played before the regular season started and by the time the infraction was discovered, Big Horn had only conference games left. Big Horn opted to forfeit the game with Kaycee. Meeteetse had several non-conference games still to play so it was easy to lop one off their schedule to comply with the 18-game limit.
15. Were the refs double parked?—A game played in Carpenter between Rock River and the Coyotes was contested in 55 minutes. The Longhorns won 47-25. It was reported that the officials believed in letting the boys play, calling only 12 total fouls (nine against the hosts!), staged two jump balls the entire game, and but one travel violation was called against Rock River. The game length harkens back to play from the 1930s and ’40s, when low scores and delay tactics dictated pace of play.
16. Bronc Bravado—Sheridan found tourney time to be out of the ordinary. A drinking incident at North regional play in Thermopolis led to a player being dismissed from the team. The Board of Trustees then called head coach Ray Schaffer on the carpet for not dismissing other players. The coach stood behind his players, believing their stories, however the school board did not. (Sheridan at the time was the No. 3 team in the state and had captured the top seed from the north region tourney.) Coach Schaffer was dismissed from his coaching duties for not maintaining discipline, and assistant coach Ted Rapstad took over the helm for the state tourney. Winter weather delayed their state tourney opener by 24 hours, then the Broncs won two of three to finish as runners-up, an excellent showing in spite of all the hubbub.
17. And the girls?—1970 marks the return to actual varsity play (pre-Title IX!)—as opposed to GAA gatherings—for several girls teams across the state. The Stat Rat found the coverage to be spotty, but will persevere to amass results in due time.

Northeast
Of the two Class AA teams in the NE, Sheridan had the better season. The Broncs captured the top spot in the northern region during the regular season, splitting series with Lander, Powell and Riverton and sweeping the other four schools. Sheridan received love from the pollsters all season long as well, usually ranked in the top three (although Casper Natrona kept the No. 1 position all season long.) Casper Kelly Walsh was again close, posting wins over all their Big Horn Basin foes save Lander. At the North regional in Thermopolis, Kelly Walsh just missed qualifying for the state tourney, losing a Saturday morning eliminator to Lander in overtime. Sheridan breezed through their three games, the closest being a 13-point win over Riverton. At state, Sheridan faced three southern region schools, polishing off Laramie and Cheyenne Central with ease, before falling to Natrona in the state championship.
The NE Class A district was the stronger of the groups of teams that comprised the Absaraka Conference.
Buffalo, in particular, posted a stellar season. The Thundering Herd ended Lusk’s win streak at 30 straight in early January and dropped only one game during the regular season, grabbing conference honors and the top seed for the NE district. Campbell County found regular season success, losing only one game (to Buffalo) through January but then stumbled somewhat with a sub-.500 February. Greybull again played a mixture of games in and out of state as Absaraka Conference scheduling kept the Buffaloes from scheduling a full slate of NE schools. At the NE district gathering in Gillette, Greybull eliminated Douglas and Newcastle to grab the No. 3 seed. Buffalo was upset in the championship, dropping its second game of the year, this time to the hosts. At state, Greybull went 0-2, while Buffalo went 2-1 versus SW teams. The Bison dropped their opener to Jackson, then rallied with wins over Star Valley and Evanston to bag consolation honors. Campbell County kept the momentum gained at district with wins over Evanston and Torrington. In the Class A finale, the Camels lost to Lusk by 11 points to take the runners-up spot.
Five teams in the Class B Powder River Conference posted 10 wins or better regular seasons. Upton was the regular season champion, losing only one game en route to the title. Tongue River was second, followed by Big Horn, Hulett and Sundance. Since the NE district provided five entries—the state tourney bracket had 16 teams—how would things shake out in Gillette? Pretty much as the regular season did, for all intents and purposes. Upton and Tongue River won through to the finals where the Bobcats captured the top seed with ease. Big Horn and Sundance battled for third and fourth place with the Rams winning by 10. Hulett took the fifth spot, ousting Moorcroft. At state, all five teams lost their opening game on Wednesday. Four teams faced each other in loser-out games on Thursday. Big Horn sent Upton packing and Tongue River did likewise to Sundance. Hulett also won over Pinedale, so three NE teams entered the consolation semifinals on Saturday after an off day on Friday. Tongue River won over Hulett and Big Horn dispatched Lyman which set up an all-NE consolation championship. Big Horn won by four over Tongue River to grab the trophy, exiting Laramie with a 3-1 record.
Class C Arvada competed against former Big Horn Basin schools in a six-team conference consisting of Burlington, Deaver, Manderson, Meeteetse and Ten Sleep. I’ve included their season record in the NW district compilation.

Rat Droppings***I’ve got Clearmont playing 19 regular season games, one more than was allowed by the WHSAA. I suppose the game versus the Sheridan Frosh might be considered a JV game but the Panthers’ best scorer all season long played in that one, which makes me think they snuck in an extra one there or possibly their JV numbers were depleted.

Casper Natrona stormed through Class AA opposition all season long, atoning for its collapse in regional play the year before. As the pollsters’ darlings from December to March, the Mustangs suffered their only loss in Cheyenne but eked out two-point road wins over Laramie and Rock Springs to cinch the top seed and bye for the South regional. In tourney play, no one came close to springing an upset, and the Mustangs walked off with their sixth state hoops title. The two Cheyenne schools finished tied for fourth in the region, although only Central made the Big Dance, taking third-place honors. Laramie couldn’t repeat as champions but still made it to state, copping consolation honors.
In Class A, Lusk made it back-to-back state championships behind the play of their 7-foot, 3-inch pivotman, Paul Kruse. The Tigers found the going tough in the Absaraka Conference and three foes—Buffalo, Gillette and Torrington—hung losses on the Niobrara County hoopsters. Only Buffalo found itself in the UPI AA/A rankings at season’s end. Lusk found its mojo at tourney time, sweeping two easy games as SE district host, then taking state. Torrington took the No. 2 seed into state tourney play and lasted all three days, losing in the third-place game.
The 11 Class B teams in the Texas Trail Conference experienced their usual grind of conference play, and five teams finished with double-digit wins. Pine Bluffs was the regular-season champ with a dozen victories, while Glenrock, Albin, Hanna and Glendo notched 10 Ws, followed by Burns and Goshen Hole with nine. District play in Torrington determined five SE entries to state tourney play. Opening-round play saw surprise losses by Pine Bluffs, Glendo and Glenrock. The first teams to exit district play were Glenrock and Hanna. Albin and Burns eventually battled for the district title, won by the Wildcats. Third and fourth place went to surprise Huntley and Goshen Hole, respectively. Pine Bluffs eliminated Glendo for the fifth and final spot. At state, Albin made the deepest run, losing to Cokeville in the third-place game. Burns exited Laramie on Thursday with an 0-2 mark as did Pine Bluffs, Huntley and Goshen Hole with 1-1 records in the 16-team bracket.
With the closing of Hillsdale, the Class C teams in the SE numbered four. Defending state champion LaGrange swept the other three teams at home and away with ease, 24 points being the narrowest of the six victory margins. The Longhorns scheduled six Class B Texas Trail teams—five of the six qualified for state tourney action—and found the going tough, losing six of nine. The Longhorns easily took SE district play in Torrington with two easy wins and qualified for state. In Laramie, LaGrange won its way into the championship and lost by seven to Ten Sleep in the finals to finish second. Ft. Laramie took the No. 2 SE seed to state and lasted all three days, losing to Meeteetse in the consolation finale. It marked Ft. Laramie’s final game, as the school merged with Lingle the following year.

For the larger Class AA Big Horn Basin schools, Powell and Lander registered the best regular seasons. For Lander, it didn’t look like that to begin win as the Tigers stumbled through a 1-5 beginning to the year. Things straightened out in January and they rocked a 10-2 mark heading to regional play. Powell started strong, slumped mid-season and righted the ship by tourney time. Sheridan captured North regional honors in Thermopolis knocking off surprise finalist Worland—which had upset both Lander and Powell—by 20. Lander took third place, defeating Powell. At state, Worland continued its inspired play by defeating Powell in a consolation round game, exiting Laramie with a 1-2 record. Both Lander and Powell were held winless in the Gem City with 0-2 marks.
Greybull again played an olio of eight games against Montana teams and in Wyoming three contests against Class B squads and two versus old BHB foe Thermopolis. The only Class A teams the Buffaloes faced were Green River once, with home and away games versus Campbell County and Buffalo. The latter two teams were NE district foes that Greybull had the good luck not to face during tourney time in Gillette. Greybull lost the district opener to Newcastle, eliminated Douglas, then avenged its initial loss with a win over the Dogies for third place and a trip to state. There, losses to Torrington and Evanston ended Greybull’s season.
Byron dang near ran the table on the 1969-70 season, dropping only one game all season long. The Eagles breezed through the regular season, winning 18 straight against Class B and Class C competition. Fellow BHB conference foes Basin, Shoshoni and Dubois kept the victory margin below double digits—the Rams took them to overtime—but Byron faced down all challenges. For the NW district tourney in Basin, the newly consolidated Wind River Cougars played slowdown hoops against Byron but again Byron won by a 25-12 score. The tourney hosts qualified for the district finals as well and Basin prevailed by three points, snapping Byron’s 29-game win streak. Dubois qualified for third and the Big Dance, as well. At state, Dubois exited after its second game, posting a win over Pinedale and a quarterfinal loss to Albin. Basin and Byron racked up three wins in a row in the 16-team bracket to stage another all-BHB Class B state tourney final. Byron avenged its district tourney loss over the Bobcats with a 13-point win, the school’s fifth hoops title.
Ten Sleep romped through the Class C conference now composed of six teams with the addition of Meeteetse and Burlington to the small-school ranks. The Pioneers were perfect against Class C competition, and the team’s only losses were to Class B BHB schools. NW/NE District play in Meeteetse eliminated only three of the six teams. Semifinalists were Ten Sleep against the hosts and Deaver against Manderson. Ten Sleep and Deaver won to advance while Meeteetse and Manderson entered and won Saturday morning eliminators. Meeteetse and Manderson then met for the coveted third-place spot, and the Longhorns earned the state tourney trip with a one-point win. Deaver played Ten Sleep close but the Pioneers won by three. At state, all three teams excelled. Meeteetse took consolation honors, Deaver third place and Ten Sleep captured another state title, the school’s third.

Southwest
Of the two SW Class AA schools, Rock Springs had the easier time of it compared to longtime rival Rawlins. The Tigers suffered six of their seven total losses to Casper and Cheyenne high schools and their only poor game was an early December loss in Evanston. Rawlins, on the other hand, managed only one win versus Class AA competition in the mid-season over Worland. Rock Springs hosted the regional and the Tigers won their opener over Rawlins, dropped a squeaker to Cheyenne Central and atoned with two Saturday wins to place third. Rawlins’ season ended on Friday with a second tourney loss to Cheyenne East. At state, Rock Springs again won its opener, then lost in the semis to eventual champs Casper Natrona, then lost on Sunday to Central in the third-place game.
In the SW Class A ranks, Jackson took regular-season honors by a game over Green River. Star Valley finished third, followed by Kemmerer and Evanston. Home cooking must’ve been just the ticket for host Evanston, as the team excelled at the SW district tourney, doubling its regular season total of two wins with two more Ws—both over Kemmerer. This assured third place and a trip to state for the Red Devils. Jackson took the SW district championship with two easy wins, the latter over surprise finalist Star Valley. Green River was on the outside looking in, dropping two close games. At state, Star Valley was gone by the end of Saturday’s play, two and done. Evanston lasted through Sunday, losing in the consolation finals. Jackson did well, finishing third. The Broncs dispatched two of three Absaraka Conference competition, losing to eventual champ Lusk in the semis.
It was a tightly packed Class B SW district regular season among the top three teams: Pinedale, Cokeville and Lyman. Pinedale and Cokeville finished tied for regular-season bragging rights with Lyman a game behind. Several games within the conference were decided by one or two points, and the SW district tourney in Evanston was anyone’s guess as to which team would take the district title. Lyman opened with a win over Cokeville—a coin flip determined Pinedale’s first-round bye—and the Eagles eventually met Pinedale in the SW district finale. Lyman won that by five over the Wranglers. Cokeville eliminated Big Piney and Mt. View to finish third. In the 16-team bracket at state, Pinedale was done by Thursday, exiting Laramie with an 0-2 mark. Class B didn’t play Friday but Lyman left the Gem City on Saturday with a 1-2 mark, losing in the consolation semis. Cokeville ended the season on a high note, lasting through Sunday and copping third-place honors. Their only loss was to eventual champion Byron in the semifinals.
Rock River and Encampment tied for regular-season kudos, although the Longhorns posted the better regular season mark at 16-1. Encampment had four more losses, but those were to teams outside of Class C play, and the two teams had split home wins. At SW district play in Rawlins, things went true to form and the schools faced off in the finale, and Rock River won by four. Farson eliminated Medicine Bow and Snake River to bag third-place honors and also qualify for state. Farson and Encampment found the going tough in Laramie, both recording 0-2 marks and a Saturday exit. Rock River managed to win its opener, then lost to Ten Sleep—the eventual champ, notice a pattern?—and on Sunday dropped the third-place game to Deaver.
