Noteworthy Events of the 1968-1969 Season
1. Laramie trifecta—The Laramie Plainsmen put in a stellar year, capturing state championships in football, basketball and track. The basketball banner was more difficult to come by, given the tough competition in the Class AA ranks. Casper Natrona took regular-season bragging rights by two games over Laramie, although the two teams split their scheduled games, both winning at home. Throw in losses to Cheyenne Central and Rock Springs along with a No. 3 or No. 7 ranking depending on the pollsters at season’s end and thoughts of a championship were found only with the most optimistic. Laramie kicked it up a notch at the south regional in Cheyenne, winning three games with ease for the No. 1 seed. South region teams won all four games during day one of the state tourney, and Laramie dispatched Cheyenne East to the third-place game on Friday. Cheyenne Central played Laramie within six points but the game ended with Laramie on top, the school’s seventh hoops championship banner.

3. Sheer perfection—Lusk’s first state title—Lusk ran the table on the season—23 straight—and finished atop the Class A ranks. It wasn’t always easy, as a mid-February road trip demonstrated. In Newcastle, a last-second steal and layup averted overtime or a loss, the Tigers winning by two. The next night in Laramie, University Prep almost notched a win, but Lusk prevailed by two points again. Lusk breezed through the SE district tourney, racking up C-notes in two easy wins. At the state tourney, only the opener allowed Lusk fans easy breathing. Semifinal foe Evanston gave the Tigers a good game, losing by six. University Prep awaited Lusk in the finale, and again the Buckaroos played solid ball, behind by the same two points at game’s end. Much of the media attention centered around 7’3″ Paul Kruse, but all-staters Steve Cockreham—later a wishbone QB at UW—and “Jungle” Jim Peterson were the engines of the Tiger attack.

5. Byron’s back for another banner—Pollsters weren’t wrong, as Big Horn Basin teams ranked atop the B/C polls all season long. The difficulty was figuring out which one would play their best ball in tourney time. Shoshoni, Byron and Basin all spent time atop the polls as the season progressed with Burlington and Dubois not far behind. In the season’s final poll, Shoshoni and Byron ranked 1-2 in both the UPI and AP polls. Sixteen Class B teams qualified for the state tourney and, as expected, Shoshoni took the BHB south tourney top spot with Dubois second while Byron did likewise in the north, topping surprise finalist Burlington. At state, the two teams marched through three rounds of wins to make the finals. Five of the six wins were by double digits, the exception was a two-point semifinal win by the Wranglers over Moorcroft. Shoshoni had won the only regular-season game scheduled against the Eagles, an eight-point win in Byron. For all the marbles, Byron turned the tables on Shoshoni, winning by five points, the school’s fourth basketball championship.

7. LaGrange lands another—Most eyes were focused on SW Class C foes Medicine Bow and Rock River, as the two schools breezed through their seasons with what would eventually total 19 wins apiece. Rock River had more of an advantage by besting Medicine Bow twice during the regular season. LaGrange flew in under the radar, so to speak, totally ignored by the media. LaGrange’s season was a bit deceptive, as the Longhorns had scheduled eight games with Class B Texas Trail schools, suffering five losses versus the larger schools. Still, LaGrange was perfect against Class C opponents and things stayed that way through tourney time, too. After easily taking SE district honors, the Longhorns were never really tested at the state tourney. LaGrange topped Medicine Bow by nine, Deaver by eight and Rock River by 12 for the school’s sixth championship trophy.

12. Changes in the Class A, B and C ranks—The WHSAA reshuffled the deck, so to speak, and a few schools made a step up or a step down to a different classification. Greybull made the drop from AA to Class A play. As the Big Horn Basin’s only Class A school, Greybull competed in the NE district with Buffalo, Campbell County, Douglas and tourney host Newcastle. Unfortunately, the move came after the season schedules were set. The four NE teams played a full 16-game Absaraka Conference schedule, leaving little room for Greybull to face any of its district foes. The Buffaloes played a piecemeal slate of 12 games versus Class B and Montana schools, four against Class AA BHB competition, and two games with Buffalo (both wins). At district, Greybull won one game over Douglas and but lost two games (both to Buffalo) and failed to advance to state.
In Class B, Clearmont and Kaycee moved up to that classification and were unable to schedule a full slate of games with the other NE schools. The two schools met for a play-in game in Buffalo, the winner earning the No. 8 seed and a chance to topple Tongue River. The Buckaroos easily won for the third time of the season over the Panthers. After dropping its district opener to the top seed Eagles, Kaycee’s stay in Newcastle ended on Friday with a loss to Big Horn.
Arvada joined Big Horn Basin teams Deaver, Manderson and Ten Sleep in a new arrangement, as the BHB trio became Class C competition. The three newcomers had full schedules with traditional BHB schools but were able to schedule Arvada at least once during the regular season. Arvada was unable to win any of those match-ups and was seeded No. 4 for the NW/NE district tourney in Ten Sleep. The Pirates were able to finish second in district play, however, and qualified for the state tourney.
13. Arvada fivesome—Arvada quickly became a fan favorite in Laramie, as the Pirates only suited up five players. The team started the season with seven players—there were only eight boys in the school—but discipline and eligibility issues reduced the number to five around the December holidays. Coach Jim Grammar soldiered on with five through the remainder of the year, compiling a 6-12 regular-season mark. Seeded fourth in district play, Arvada eliminated both Ten Sleep and Manderson in loser-out games and qualified as the No. 2 seed behind Deaver. At state, Arvada won its opener then lost its next two games, as midnight ended their Cinderella tourney efforts.
14. Lucky/unlucky Kaycee—Kaycee found luck—both good and bad—just prior to tourney play. An accident involving two cars injured six Kaycee players prior to their play-in game with Clearmont. Two regulars were injured enough to prevent them from playing. The accident happened just minutes before the team was scheduled to board the bus for the contest in Buffalo. The six players were rushed to the Johnson County Hospital where all but one were treated and released. Two were able to play in the game and their coach reported that they were “pretty sore and stiff Wednesday morning,” according to the Buffalo paper. Kaycee was lucky the injuries weren’t worse in the broadside crash.
15. Okie at Hillsdale—After a decade’s absence, Coach C. H. “Okie” Blanchard staged his swan song, finishing his stellar career at Hillsdale. The Pioneers had fallen on hard times during the 1960s, last attaining a plus .500 won/loss mark in the 1959-60 season. Recently retired from his job as athletic director for the Cheyenne schools, Blanchard described himself as a “retread coach” in assuming the mentorship of the Pioneers. Like the Arvada team, the Pioneers battled to keep enough players eligible and healthy enough to field a full squad. In their initial game at Bushnell, Nebraska, the Pioneers showed up with five players and by the end of the game only two remained as the other three had fouled out. Bushnell, however, took out a player each time the visitors lost a player and for the last four minutes of the game a total of four boys were on the floor, a 77-57 Pioneer loss. Coach Blanchard and Hillsdale ended the season with two losses in SE district play, compiling a 5-12 mark, possibly his only sub-.500 season in a stellar career that began in 1925 coaching Glenrock. An Associated Press article in December of 1968 listed his career record at 708-126; make that 713-138 with the 1968-69 season added in. It was Hillsdale’s final season as the school district merged with Burns the next year.
16. Lusk versus Laramie—It’s somewhat rare for the eventual Class AA and Class A champions to square off during the regular season—it’s more apt to happen in the small school classifications—but the game played on a mid-December evening influenced basketball pollsters for the rest of the season. Lusk visited Laramie on a Monday and emerged with a 74-55 victory. It was a measure of revenge for the Tigers who lost on the football gridiron to the state champion Plainsmen by a 60-20 drubbing in late August. After the basketball victory, Class A Lusk was placed atop both the AP and UPI AA/A polls for the remainder of the year, a spot almost exclusively reserved for teams in the largest classification.
17. Season ended by accidental gunshot—Lander’s chances at a repeat state championship were gunned down by the loss of 6’3” starter Matt Coffey due to a freak shooting accident at his home. A pistol Coffey was carrying dropped and discharged with the bullet striking him in the leg. Young Coffey recovered from the accident but not in time to help his Tiger teammates. It’s not the first—nor would it be the last—time this has happened in Wyoming prep sports history, given the Cowboy State’s love of hunting and the outdoors.

Northeast
Sheridan had the better year of the two NE Class AA schools, although Kelly Walsh was agonizingly close to heading to the state tourney. The Trojans won at least one regular-season game with all of their Big Horn Basin foes and split their games with Sheridan. Two one-basket losses to the Fremont County schools at the north regional in Lander kept KW out of the Big Dance, however. Sheridan finished among the top three in the north region and finished third bouncing back from a semifinal loss to Powell. At state, Sheridan dropped its opener—as did all the north region teams—but grabbed consolation honors by topping Riverton and Lander.
Greybull, the lone Class A school in the Big Horn Basin, was added to the NE district in Newcastle. Campbell County earned a first-round bye and breezed through two games to capture the NE district title. Newcastle and Buffalo had to play a challenge game on Monday to determine the No. 2 seed, and the Dogies settled the matter convincingly. At state, Gillette had the longer stay as the Camels dropped their opener but came back to take the consolation trophy with two wins. Newcastle went 0-2 in Laramie, exiting play on Friday.
Tongue River and Hulett staged a spirited regular-season battle for NE district bragging rights in Class B with the Eagles besting Hulett by two games for the title. Prior to the district tourney in Newcastle, Kaycee and Clearmont—moved from Class C to Class B—contested a play-in game in Buffalo for the No. 8 seed, as both teams had not competed/completed a full conference schedule. Kaycee took that game easily to qualify for tourney play. District shook out like the regular season as Hulett and Tongue River battled through to face one another in the finals, which was won by the Eagles. Third and fourth place also qualified for state—Class B had a 16-team bracket—and Big Horn topped Moorcroft for the No. 3 seed. At state, Big Horn lasted three days—eventually eliminated by consolation champ Pine Bluffs on Friday. Hulett and Tongue River both won their openers but lost on Thursday, exiting the tourney with 1-1 efforts. Moorcroft made it to the semifinals, but lost on Friday and also on Saturday in the third-place game, a four-game tourney stay.
Arvada fought number problems all season long. The Pirates started the season with seven players but two were ineligible after the December holidays. Coach Jim Grammar gamely kept the team intact playing with just five players for the remainder of the season. District play was held in Ten Sleep and the Pirates surprised by qualifying for state, topping the hosts and Manderson in consolation play to finish second despite two losses to Deaver. At state, Arvada surprised again, besting Ft. Laramie in the opener. The Arvada quintet lost in the semifinals and also in the game for third place, ending their Cinderella run.

When I find a discrepancy, I tend to take the newspaper account rather than the yearbook record, in this case the Sheridan Press. It happens on occasion and serves as a cautionary tale with this type of research. ***The February win over Kaycee is a 19th regular-season game for Big Horn. Big Horn played a bunch of JV/B games, but this one had the Dow cousins—both key varsity starters—playing in it, so I believe it should count as a varsity game, even if it is one over the allowed regular season limit of 18.

Laramie’s title was somewhat of a surprise, given that the Plainsmen sat second in their own region, ranked behind Casper Natrona for most of the season in the standings and the polls. However, the Plainsmen played their best ball when it mattered most and nabbed the school’s seventh basketball championship, pairing nicely with their perfect football season during the fall sports calendar. All four south region teams won their openers at state, as both Cheyenne schools atoned for sub-.500 seasons. Central made the finals but lost to Laramie for the runners-up trophy, just as they did at the Cheyenne regional two weekends before. Natrona’s stunning no-show at state was the result of a bye, a shellacking by Central, and one-point ousting by Rock Springs in regional play.
The Lusk Tigers rolled to a perfect season, winning 23 straight games, and copped their first state hoops championship. Although they managed to score over 90 points nine times that year, it wasn’t always easy, as they had three games decided by two points or less, including the championship game in Laramie against a fine University Prep team. Lusk stood atop the statewide polls for most of the season, which was a first for a Class A team in the combined AA/A rankings. Wheatland was a surprise in making the trip to Laramie, qualifying for state with a total of six wins. The Bulldogs proved to be no fluke, as they won their opener in the Gem City before dropping the next two games. For a team that was 0-18 the previous year, it was a stellar showing.
Five of the eleven Texas Trail Conference teams qualified for state, as the Class B tourney bracket in Laramie included 16 teams. Lingle and Glenrock had finished 1-2 in the final conference standings and the Herders reversed that, capturing the SE district crown with a two-point win over the Doggers. Albin and Glendo ranked fourth and fifth in the standings battled for third and fourth place, with the Wildcats winning easily over the Eagles. Pine Bluffs defeated Hanna for the fifth and final spot in the state tourney bracket. In Laramie, the best placing went to Pine Bluffs as the Hornets dropped their opener and then reeled off three straight Ws to claim consolation honors. The Hornets’ foe in their final game was Laramie County neighbor Albin, which exited Laramie with a 2-2 tourney record. Shortest stays at Laramie were shared by Glendo (0-2), Glenrock (1-1) and Lingle (1-1), as all were done by Thursday evening.
In Class C, LaGrange’s regular season was a combination of dominance over conference schools and the smart scheduling of several tough Texas Trail Class B schools. The Longhorns were perfect against the SE Class C teams and battled to a 3-5 mark versus Albin, Burns, Goshen Hole and Pine Bluffs. Even though the pollsters totally ignored the Longhorns—not even a vote in either poll—the tough games did the trick as LaGrange dominated tourney play, easily taking the district crown and taking three games at state by nine, eight and 12 points, their sixth and final state championship. Ft. Laramie, which took the No. 2 SE seed, finished at 0-2 in Laramie, ousted by SE foe Carpenter on Friday. Carpenter played for consolation honors on Saturday, losing to Medicine Bow.

Rat Droppings***Ken Morgan’s second game against Sheridan is most likely a triple double. Rebound numbers rarely made it into the wrap-up articles back then unless it was a huge number. Eleven blocks were indicative of how phenomenal a player Morgan was and I’ll bet dollars to donuts he had at least 15 caroms. *** The Rat had the pleasure of watching the February double-header in the old third story gym as a Rapid City High School junior, watching Morgan square off against John Dutton (later a Nebraska Cornhusker/Baltimore Colts/Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman). Dutton’s Cobblers won the South Dakota state title that year. Points in the paint that particular weekend were tough to come by as both patrolled the lane as their own personal turf.

Rat Droppings***I’m quite sure that Hillsdale only won five games during the season. A picture of the team in the Pine Bluffs paper printed the week of district tourney had them at 5-10 for the regular season. I’ve no reason to doubt that, although I’m missing scores from three of their JV opponents during the final few weeks of February. If the Pioneers won two of those three games my data would jive with the Pine Bluffs Post. Finding those results have proved to be problematic as the Cheyenne Eagle and the Tribune all but ignored many JV results as did the Torrington Telegram. Sorry Okie, I can only confirm (sorta) five wins. Charles Sandberg’s 47 and 48 point games are legit, by the way, and need to be included among the all-time single game scoring marks.

Northwest
For Class AA, the two Fremont County schools and the two big city teams—Casper Kelly Walsh and Sheridan—stood apart from the rest during the regular season. (The standings below reflect records without Worland added in as the Warriors were part of the seven-team south region.) Riverton took regular-season honors and entered the north regional in Lander as one of the top seeds. The biggest upset in the opening round was Powell’s win over the host team Tigers. Powell surprised again in the semis with a win over Sheridan. The Panthers stayed red hot in the final and just missed upsetting Riverton for the title by two points. Sheridan topped Lander for the No. 3 seed. At Laramie, all four north region teams lost their openers, relegating the quartet to consolation play. Sheridan and Lander won their games over Riverton and Powell and played on Saturday. Sheridan took the consolation trophy with a six-point win.
Greybull, as the lone Class A team in the northwest, found it tough to schedule traditional opponents. The Buffaloes’ regular season was a mélange of games against mostly NE Class B schools, Montana teams, and a couple of old Class AA BHB foes, Thermopolis and Lovell. At the NW/NE district in Newcastle, Greybull found the going tough as the Buffaloes managed only one win. The did manage to eliminate Douglas on day two but lost two games to Buffalo to end their season.
Class B in the Big Horn Basin was loaded with powerhouse teams. Several were ranked atop the Class B/C wire polls, including Basin, Shoshoni and Byron, with Dubois and Burlington not too far behind. In the north, Burlington and Basin fought for the second spot all season long. Basin finished the regular season in second with two wins over the Huskies. At the Byron district tourney, Burlington found sweet revenge with a hard-earned 85-82 win over Basin. Byron had little trouble besting Burlington the following night for the No. 1 seed. At the Pavillion district tourney, Shoshoni had little trouble with two easy wins, the second one over No. 2 seed Dubois. At state, the four teams saw mixed success. Dubois and Burlington were two and done, eliminated by Thursday evening. Shoshoni and Byron found better luck, winning through to an all-BHB finale. Byron won its fourth state title by a five-point margin over Shoshoni.
Three NW schools were moved to Class C play: Ten Sleep, Manderson and Deaver. Deaver had the best regular season and entered the district tourney in Ten Sleep as the top seed. Arvada, with no Class C opponents in the NE, was added to the district. Deaver easily bested Arvada in the opener while Manderson did likewise to the hosts. Arvada bounced back with wins over Ten Sleep and Manderson to face Deaver again in the finals. Again, Deaver won by a similar amount. In Laramie, both Arvada and Deaver won their openers and lost their semifinal games. On Saturday, Deaver again defeated the five-man Arvada team to finish with the third-place trophy. Arvada lost to Deaver five times over the course of the 1968-69 season.

Southwest
Between the two SW Class AA schools, Rock Springs had the better season than its traditional foe, Rawlins. The Tigers finished third in the south region and had wins over every region team except Natrona. However, at the regional, Rawlins stunned Rock Springs in the opener and moved the Tigers to consolation play. Rock Springs bounced back with two wins to battle for the No. 3 and 4 seeds, losing to Cheyenne East. Rawlins could find little success after that first regional win, ending its season early Saturday morning. Rock Springs fared well at the state tourney, winning over Riverton, losing to Cheyenne Central and then taking third-place honors, avenging their regional loss to Cheyenne East.
Parity reigned supreme in the SW Class A ranks as two games separated top from bottom at the end of the regular season. Jackson and Evanston tied for the top spot and Jackson won the coin flip for the first-round bye in SW district play. Three SW teams qualified for state, and in the semis Jackson won by two over Star Valley and tourney host Green River upset Evanston. Evanston won the No. 3 seed on Saturday by topping Star Valley. Green River got the W over Jackson in the championship, its first win over the Broncs all season. At state, Evanston had the best run, qualifying for the semis (where it lost to eventual champ Lusk by six) and then bagging third-place honors with a Saturday win. Jackson was two and done while Green River lasted until the final day, losing to Campbell County in the consolation finals.
Lyman and Cokeville were the cream of the SW Class B crop, tying for honors in the regular season. Cokeville won the coin flip bye, but things held true to form and the two teams faced one another in the district finale in Green River. It was a stellar battle and Lyman won by a point in overtime. Pinedale took county nemesis Big Piney for the No. 3 district seed. At state, Cokeville lasted all four days within the 16-team bracket, qualifying for the semifinals but then losing to eventual champ Byron. The Panthers rallied back the next day to garner the third-place trophy with a win over Moorcroft. Pinedale went 0-2 at state while Lyman lost its second state tourney game in the consolation semifinals, exiting Laramie with a 1-2 mark.
Both Medicine Bow and Rock River excelled during the regular season, with Rock River taking regular-season conference honors and a first-round bye at the Medicine Bow-hosted district tourney. The first round had quite the shock as Encampment stunned Medicine Bow in the first round. The win guaranteed the Tigers an appearance in the finals, which was against top seed Rock River. Rock River won for the third time in the season over the Tigers to take the top spot. Medicine Bow eliminated Farson and Snake River to grab the No. 3 seed. At state, Rock River won through to the finals where it lost to LaGrange for the tourney title. Medicine Bow lasted all three days at state, losing its opener (also to LaGrange) and then winning two in a row for consolation honors. Encampment went 0-2 in Laramie.
