Noteworthy Events of the 1967-1968 Season
1. Four new state champions; Lander’s first hoops title—Each classification saw schools claim their first basketball championships. Lander did it the hard way, suffering through a dismal December and January, five games under .500. The addition of eventual all-stater Willard Gould to the lineup at second semester eventually proved to be the right tonic as the Tigers went undefeated in February and tourney time. Cheyenne Central was the favorite among the pollsters for the majority of the season, and the Indians were ranked No. 1 heading into regional play. The Indians did take first in the region but ran into trouble in state semifinals in Laramie where nemesis Cheyenne East won in a tight battle. East played Lander close in the finals, but Lander won by three.

3. Star Valley’s first hoops title—As often as the state’s most successful consolidation of townships into one high school rack up state basketball championships, its first one occurred surprisingly late in the state’s hoops history. The first one was somewhat of a surprise, as the Braves were unranked in one poll and No. 7 in the other. Campbell County was the favorite of the pollsters, ranked at No. 2 or No. 3 in the combined Class AA/A polls. The Camels were certainly worthy of the lofty position, having won the tough Absaraka Conference championship and copping first place at the NE district tourney in Buffalo. Star Valley was lucky to be at the state tourney, benefitting from the fact that the SW district tourney qualified three of its five teams for Laramie. Star Valley, although seeded first, had finished third at the SW district, being upset by Green River in its first game. At state, the Braves shined, methodically besting Torrington, Buffalo and Campbell County by comfortable margins.

5. Glenrock’s first hoops title—The 12-team state tourney bracket had a number of contenders, and three Big Horn Basin teams traded the top spot in the two statewide polls as the regular season progressed. Basin, Byron and Shoshoni all posted excellent seasons and as tourney time began, as Basin stood atop one poll while Shoshoni led the other. No. 2 in both wire services’ estimation was Glenrock, which had narrowly won Texas Trail regular-season championship honors over Albin and defending state champion Goshen Hole and had captured the SE district title. In the SW, Mt. View had edged regular season champ Big Piney to merit a first-round bye at state, along with Upton, Glenrock and Shoshoni. After winning its Wednesday opener, Basin then won against Shoshoni in what was a poorly seeded tourney bracket. Glenrock defeated Pine Bluffs, Mt. View won over Albin and Dubois did likewise, toppling Upton. Glenrock bested Basin in the semifinals as did Mt. View by defeating Dubois. Glenrock then took a tight one-point win over Mt. View for its initial state hoops championship.

7. Medicine Bow’s first hoops title—Consolidation and demographics had diminished the Class C ranks to 13 teams. Ten Sleep became a Class B school and there were five teams each in the SE and SW along with three in the NE. Generally the SE district provided the champion, and Carpenter had sailed through its SE conference regular season unscathed. Carpenter did lose a December game to the SW’s Rock River, which indicated a potential change in the balance of small-school power. Rock River and Medicine Bow tied for SW regular-season honors, and the Wranglers, in spite of a middling .500 February mark, played their best ball at tourney time, capturing the SW district title. The SW sent Medicine Bow, Rock River and Farson to state; the SE sent Carpenter, Chugwater and Ft. Laramie; and the NE sent Kaycee and Arvada. In Laramie, Arvada, Medicine Bow, Rock River and Farson all won their openers, shutting out the three SE teams, definitely a seismic event in Class C play. Medicine Bow squeaked by Arvada in the semis by a single point while Farson upset Rock River in a high-scoring affair. On Saturday, Medicine Bow won its first state title.

12. He ain’t heavy—There are brother combinations every year that make their mark, but the state tourney squads of this season had several brother combos of note. Rock River had the Sandoval brothers, Ray and Victor. Cheyenne Central had the Gadlin siblings, Jerry and Tony. Farson-Eden had the Browns, Kurt and Kelly. And Glenrock’s Phipps brothers—Bruce and Joe—led the Sheepherders to the apex of Class B teams, the school’s initial championship.
13. Lusk health issues—Lusk was a year away from a state championship run during this season, a campaign made difficult by illnesses to the team’s top players. The Tigers posted a 4-1 December that was relatively healthy. Starting in January, the team was hit by mumps, and head coach Dick Price played some games with as few as seven or eight total players, common for small schools but not for Class A competition. All-staters Steve Cockreham and Jim Peterson both were stricken and missed most of January—Peterson also had measles—and the Tigers posted a 5-3 mark. February brought with it the usual bout of flu that teammates shared, and again several starters were shelved. Lusk got healthy around tourney time and the Tigers took SE district honors and the third-place trophy at state.
14. Schedule snafus—In Class AA, the two regional alignments were tweaked a little, which made difficulties for several schools involved. In the South AA, a Big Horn Basin team was again added to the other seven teams—the two Casper high schools, two Cheyenne, Laramie, Rock Springs and Rawlins—and this time it was Thermopolis. The Bobcats played pretty much a Big Horn Basin slate—the exception being a home and home with Rawlins—so come tourney time Thermopolis had no experience against the other six schools. Casper Kelly Walsh had a similar problem being switched from North AA to South AA, apparently after the schedules were posted. KW did manage to play nine games against South AA schools but also scheduled nine games against former North AA foes. In Class A, the absence of any NW Class A teams meant Class A-sized Greybull played a Class AA schedule, including tourney play. Minus any NW Class A teams, the classification was the state’s second smallest, having only 14 teams, one more than Class C.
15. Hall of Famers—The Campbell County High School Hall of Fame announced its initial group of inductees in November of 2023. Included in the group are Mark Fitch and Mike Hladky, key players of their runners-up team during the 1967-68 season. In June of 2023, the Niobrara County High School Alumni Association announced its initial group of inductees for its first Hall of Fame class in Lusk. Included in the group was Steve Cockreham, also a key player during the 1967-68 season. All three players were named first-team Class A all-state by the Associated Press in early March of 1968.

Northeast
Sheridan played 11 regular-season games against Big Horn Basin teams—12 if you count south region rep Thermopolis—and finished atop the grouping by percentage points over Powell. Unfortunately, a regional semifinal loss versus tourney site host Cody paired the Broncs against Riverton in a Saturday morning eliminator. Riverton had Sheridan’s number both at home and away during the regular season and the Wolverines ran their season mark to 3-0 over the Broncs with another W. The premature ending to Sheridan’s season was certainly a surprise as the Broncs were rated as high as No. 4 in the statewide polls.
Best of the lot for the NE district was Campbell County, as the Camels won top seed in the Class A NE, took Absaraka Conference honors and were ranked as the top Class A team in the AA-A polls, as high as No. 3 statewide. At the district tourney opener in Buffalo, Newcastle threw a scare into Gillette but the Camels persevered and eked out a one-point win. Two easy victories over the hosts assured Campbell County the district championship. At state, both Gillette and Buffalo won their openers. In Friday’s semifinal games, Buffalo lost to Star Valley while their NE counterparts defeated Absaraka foe Lusk. Saturday, Buffalo lost in the third-place game to Lusk. Gillette exited Laramie with the runners-up trophy, losing to Star Valley by seven. Their 21-3 mark was Class A’s best record of the 1967-68 season.
Moorcroft and Upton tied for the Class B regular-season championship. Moorcroft, by virtue of its two wins over Upton, received the first-round bye for the NE district in Buffalo. That bye might’ve been a bad thing as Midwest easily topped Moorcroft in Friday’s semifinal by nine points. Upton, with two easy wins over Sundance and Hulett, made Saturday’s final, as well. Upton bested Midwest by seven in the penultimate game. The NE provided only two entries to the 12-team state tourney bracket (as did the SW) and neither team fared all that well. Midwest exited Laramie with an 0-2 mark. Upton saw only one game at state. The Bobcats earned a first-round bye and then lost their second game to Dubois.
The Class C NE district was pared down to three teams with Ten Sleep moving up a notch to Class B NW play. Kaycee and Arvada tied for regular-season conference honors. Clearmont, which had played mostly against JV squads during the winter months, lost to Arvada in the opener. Friday, Kaycee defeated Arvada and then on Saturday Arvada repeated a victory over Clearmont. That evening Kaycee again won over Arvada for the district crown. At state, Arvada fared somewhat better than Kaycee. The Buckaroos dropped both their games to be eliminated on Friday. Arvada won its opener and then dropped a one-point game to eventual champion Medicine Bow. On Saturday, the Pirates lost to Rock River in the third-place game.

Rat Droppings***Wyoming prep teams were allowed to schedule 18 regular season games. The two with the Buffalo JV made it 19. Only one was reported in the Buffalo paper, but their yearbook cited two scores…possibly a Kaycee JV game? Or did the Buckaroos over-schedule? Curiouser and curiouser.

Southeast
In Class AA, Cheyenne Central wore targets on their backs for the regular season, perched atop or near the apex of ranked teams in both the AP and UPI polls. Their one-point semifinal win over crosstown rival East was an ill omen for the Indians at the regional, but they captured the regional crown with ease in the championship game, easily besting Laramie. In a change, both Casper teams were included in the region, but both stumbled and missed qualifying for the state tourney, even though the Oil City was the regional host. At Laramie, both Cheyenne schools and Laramie made the semifinals as did North regional champ Lander. East upset Central in the semis while Lander handled Laramie. The next night, Lander won it all, quite the surprise for a Tiger team ranked outside the top 10 in the AP poll prior to regionals and at No. 9 in the UPI’s survey. Laramie finished in third, edging Central for the first time all year long.
Class A St. Mary’s captured regular-season honors in the SE and finished second in the always-tough Absaraka Conference behind Campbell County. The Gaels’ biggest SE challenger was Lusk, which had battled through bouts of mumps, measles and flu that sidelined several starters through January and February of the regular season. At the SE district in Torrington, a more or less healthy Lusk easily copped the district championship, handily defeating the Gaels in its opener and then doing likewise to the host team. The Gaels also qualified with a tight, two-point win over University Prep. At state, only Lusk won its opener as St. Mary’s and Torrington both lost to the eventual finalists. Lusk dropped its semifinal game to Gillette while Star Valley won over Buffalo. Lusk took third place on the final day, topping Absaraka Conference foe Buffalo. St. Mary’s went 0-2 in Laramie while Torrington lost in the consolation finals, exiting Laramie with a 1-2 mark.
Four of the 11 Class B Texas Trail teams qualified for the state tourney, and the SE district tourney in Torrington had a number of teams as contenders or pretenders. Glenrock won regular-season honors by percentage points over Albin and Goshen Hole. All three teams merited first-round byes. Hanna and Burns were also considered potential state tourney visitors. Burns upset Hanna to make the semis as did Albin, Glenrock and Goshen Hole. Glenrock and Albin defeated Goshen Hole and Burns respectively to make the championship finals. Goshen Hole battled through the consolation bracket and eventually defeated outlier Pine Bluffs in the battle for third and fourth place. Glenrock took first place over Albin in a close game. At state, Albin and Pine Bluffs won their openers and then dropped their next games to finish with 1-1 marks. Goshen Hole left Laramie with an 0-2 record. Glenrock, however, enjoyed the round one bye in the 12-team bracket and then reeled off three straight wins, including a one-point win over Mt. View in the championship, the school’s first.
Generally the Class C state champs came from the SE district. That was not the case for the 1967-68 season. Only five teams comprised the SE as consolidation had diminished the ranks to a total of 13 Class C teams statewide. Best of the lot was Carpenter, which breezed through the regular season undefeated in the SE. Chugwater finished second and LaGrange and Ft. Laramie tied for third. The real question at the SE district was which of the third-place teams would qualify for state. That question was solved in the second round when Hillsdale upset LaGrange, actually the first win for the Pioneers over a conference foe for the entire season. Ft. Laramie ended the Cinderella run for Hillsdale the next day, qualifying for state with a third-place finish. Carpenter took the district championship honors over Chugwater. At state, all three SE teams lost their openers. Ft. Laramie ended its state tourney run at 0-2, losing on day two, as well. Chugwater and Carpenter lasted one more day, dueling for consolation honors. Carpenter won its fourth game of the entire season over the Platte County foe and earned the consolation trophy.

Northwest
In Class AA, Lander brought home its first state hoops championship in a Jekyll-and-Hyde sort of year. Mr. Hyde went first as the Tigers stumbled through December and January with a 3-8 record. From February on, Dr. Jekyll took over and Lander was perfect in February and in tournament play with the addition of all-stater Willard Gould at the start of second semester. The Tigers won some tough tourney games, by four over Powell in the regional semis, by four over Rawlins in the state tourney opener, and by three over No. 1-ranked Cheyenne Central in the championship finale. At state, the three other Big Horn Basin teams lost their openers. Riverton ended its run by losing to Cody in the consolation semis, exiting Laramie at 0-2. Powell and Cody faced off on Saturday for the consolation championship, and the Panthers won by a single point, their third win over their county rival during the season.
There were no Class A teams in the Big Horn Basin, although by school census numbers Greybull was smaller than Class A Lusk and Lovell was about 50 students larger than the Tigers. Confined by geography, the two schools played a typical Big Horn Basin schedule and unfortunately finished at the bottom. Thermopolis played in the South AA regional, against non-BHB teams, apparently drawing the short straw to do so. It was hardly a fair test for the Bobcats, as they had faced only one AA South team all season long, but the Bobcats lasted until the Saturday morning eliminator.
Four teams saw the most success in the Class B Big Horn Basin. In the south, Shoshoni finished atop the regular-season standings with Dubois placing second. In the north, Byron and Basin finished in a tie for conference bragging rights. At season’s end, Shoshoni was favored by pollsters in one poll while Basin was top ranked in the other. Byron was No. 3 or No. 4 depending on the poll and Dubois was a bit further down at No. 6 or No. 9. The district tourneys really didn’t decide much. Shoshoni took the south with a win over host Dubois in the final. Byron took the north with a win over host Basin in that finale. At state, Shoshoni had the shortest stay, earning a first-round bye and then losing to Basin. Byron dropped its opener but stormed back with two wins to take consolation honors. Basin and Dubois made the championship semifinal on Friday but both teams lost, setting up a battle for third place on Saturday. Basin defeated Dubois in that game, departing Laramie with a nifty 3-1 mark. Dubois broke even; its record was 2-2.
There were no Class C teams in the NW this season as Ten Sleep had moved up to Class B play.

Southwest
It was a relatively successful year for schools from the SW portion of the state. The area claimed two state championships, two runners-up and a third-place finish among the nine SW teams that qualified for play that final weekend in Laramie. Class AA was the least successful, however, as both Rock Springs and Rawlins posted so-so records. At the South AA regional in Casper, only Rawlins avoided elimination by finishing fourth. Rock Springs lost in a Saturday morning eliminator to Cheyenne East to end its season prematurely. Rawlins dropped both its state tourney games to Big Horn Basin schools and was finished by Friday’s play, two and done.
Three of the five SW Class A teams qualified for state, which was lucky for the eventual state champion. Star Valley had easily won the regular-season championship, but the Braves were upset in their first SW district game, losing by a bucket to Green River. The Braves took third on Saturday with a win over the host team, Kemmerer. Jackson took the SW district title. At state, Green River dropped its opener but then won two straight to capture consolation honors. Jackson lost both its state tourney games. Star Valley had a stellar championship run, comfortably defeating Torrington, Buffalo and the top-ranked Class A team in the finale, Campbell County. In a half century of Wyoming state tourneys, this was Star Valley’s first, and more would ensue, numbering in double digits for the next half century.
Big Piney and Mt. View were the cream of the SW Class B teams, and the Punchers won the regular-season crown by a game over the Buffalos. Mt. View gained a measure of revenge in SW district play by defeating Big Piney in the Friday night finals, which delayed Big Piney’s invitation to Laramie by 24 hours. Saturday, Big Piney defeated Cokeville for the second time in tourney play to qualify for the Big Dance. The two teams lasted all four days at state. Big Piney lost its opener but battled back to the consolation finals where it lost to Byron, exiting Laramie with a 1-2 mark. Mt. View had a tough path to the finals but defeated a solid Albin crew and a tough Dubois squad to make the championship. The Buffalos lost a one-point heartbreaker to Glenrock and finished second.
Medicine Bow and Rock River staged a season-long battle, split their home and home series and ended up tied for first at the end of the regular season. It was assumed that the two would meet for the SW district championship, which is exactly what happened. Tourney host Medicine Bow, which had racked up a ‘meh’ .500 record in February, gelled at the proper time and easily defeated Rock River. Farson took the third-place game and, as in Class A, three of the five teams would represent the SW at the state tourney. All three SW teams won their Laramie openers, normally the purview of the SE Class C teams. The power in small school hoops had shifted west. In the semis, Medicine Bow eked out a one-point win over Arvada while Farson-Eden sprang the state tourney’s biggest upset over Rock River. The Longhorns bounced back on Saturday to take third place. Medicine Bow then bested Farson for the championship. All three SW Class C teams had medaled: first-, second- and third-place finishes.
