Noteworthy Events of the 1959-1960 Season
1. Class AA/A—In a year that saw the same finalists in all three classes meet again for a state championship, only the Class AA/A sector provided a new state champion. In polls during the year, Class A teams like Cody, Star Valley and Lovell found themselves at or near the top, but come state tourney time, the Big Six teams took three of the four semifinal spots: Rock Springs, Rawlins and Sheridan (along with A-sized Lovell.) The Bulldogs gave Rock Springs all they could handle but the Tigers won a squeaker by three. Sheridan easily defeated Rawlins to set up a Tigers versus Broncs rematch. The familiar foes did have different head coaches from the previous year’s final and Rock Springs was up to the challenge besting Sheridan by 12. It was Rock Springs’ first title in a decade.

3. Perfecto—The St. Stephens Eagles ran the table on the season, etching a 28-0 mark into the record books. University Prep again played the bridesmaid to the Eagles as the Buckaroos brought a perfect 25-0 record into the Class B state championship final, as well. (The meeting of two undefeated teams in a state tourney final is a rarity in Wyoming hoops; this marks the first occurrence since before the ’31-’32 season.) Perennial contender Cowley and SW regular season champ Superior found their way into the semifinals, but were no match for the repeat finalists. Superior edged Cowley for third place on the final day. The Eagles’ lopsided 71-55 score over the Buckaroos is somewhat deceiving, as the two teams were close until University Prep’s all-state center fouled out in the fourth quarter.

5. Three in a row—LaGrange posted its third straight Class C state championship, racking up a 25-1 record on the way to hanging another banner in its gym. Under coach Ron Schliske, the Longhorns’ only loss was to Class B Pine Bluffs early in the regular season. The SE corner of the state again proved too much for the rest of small school Wyoming as the four SE teams won their opener in Laramie. LaGrange faced Yoder in the semis while East Laramie County champ Carpenter squared off against Hawk Springs. LaGrange defeated Yoder for the fifth time that season and Carpenter edged by Hawk Springs. In the championship rematch the LaGrange defeated the Coyotes 54-48, a third state championship for the Longhorns.

10. NBA style—With the blessings of the WHSAA, Cheyenne was the site of a two-game basketball experiment where the 24 second clock was used, just as the NBA continues to do so to this day. The National Federation of State High School Athletics was considering making the rule change, which was aimed at speeding up the high school game. On Dec. 22, the Indians hosted Torrington and easily won 67-40. Only one shot clock violation was recorded, that by the Trailblazers in the fourth quarter when they failed to get a shot taken in time. The next night Rawlins came to the Capitol City and lost 63-49. No shot clock violations occurred; in fact, a Cheyenne reporter wrote that most shots were attempted within 15 seconds. The coaches involved didn’t think the presence of the time limit altered their offensive schemes/patterns at all.
11. WHSAA keeps busy—Executive secretary James Jiacoletti and the WHSAA kept busy throughout the season, ruling on various protests and infractions. Newcastle’s early game—by 10 days—with Belle Fourche on Nov. 20 was allowed. The board disallowed a protest on a Feb. 12 game by Douglas where, with seven seconds left in the game, a referee allowed time for Torrington to score a winning basket after the Bearcats were called for failing to inbound the ball within five seconds. The board said that it was a “judgment decision” on the part of the referee. However, a Worland/Riverton game played on Feb. 20 would have to be replayed a week later when Worland called an illegal sixth time-out and the officials failed to award a technical foul. Pavillion protested the presence of a player on St. Stephens, saying he was 20 years old and therefore not eligible for high school postseason play. The Pavillion superintendent (as well as a Casper sports reporter) accused St. Stephens of recruiting players, as well. The board of control sided with St. Stephens, saying that St. Stephens did nothing untoward. The school the player transferred from in South Dakota had run afoul of that state’s high school athletic association for various infractions and the bureaucratic paperwork in that particular area was hit and miss. The particular athlete in question made the all-state tourney team on the season’s final Saturday night.
12. Jacoletti passes—Folks were stunned in August when news came from Chicago that the executive secretary of the Wyoming High School Activities Association, James Jiacoletti, had passed away due to a heart attack. He was attending a football rules committee meeting there. Jiacoletti was respected through prep athletic and coaching circles, one of Wyoming’s own. He graduated as a star athlete from Kemmerer, continued a successful athletic career at the University of Wyoming, taught and coached at Superior, Kemmerer, and Hanna. He was both a school principal and later a school superintendent. He took over the reins of the WHSAA in 1952 and was instrumental in building the association into an effective overseer of Wyoming prep activities.

Northeast
Of the two Class AA teams, Sheridan posted the better season, repeating the trip to the state tourney championship finals from a year ago. New coach Morris Zempel’s Broncs came up short to Rock Springs as the Tigers avenged their loss on the way to the state championship. The Broncs’ second-place finish was still the best of any NE team. Casper Natrona suffered through a sub-.500 year, finishing third in the district and exiting the state tourney by Friday with a 1-2 mark.
Only one Class A NE team qualified for the state tourney, and that was Newcastle, which finished fourth at district in Gillette. Greybull, the representative from the Big Horn Basin Conference, surprised many by upsetting Newcastle in the opener and Natrona in the semis. The Buffaloes even gave Sheridan a run for their money in the district final, losing by three. Newcastle, the Powder River Class A regular season champs, took the No. 4 NE seed to Laramie. The Dogies won their opener but lost their second state tourney game, which meant for a late Thursday exit from state.
Midwest ran the table in the Class B NE, posting a 12-0 mark in Powder River play. Upton and Moorcroft finished second and third respectively and the district tourney played out the same exact way. Midwest won a close game from Upton to earn the bye in the 12-team state tourney bracket. The bye proved to be no help to the Oilers as they dropped their Thursday game to Cowley, and Midwest headed home with a 0-1 record. Moorcroft lasted two days, being eliminated by nemesis Upton on Thursday. Upton played for consolation honors but lost by two to Pine Bluffs, leaving with a 1-2 state tourney mark.
Clearmont was the best of the three NE teams during the year, posting a perfect mark against Arvada and Kaycee for the regular season. Ten Sleep, the only Class C team in the Big Horn Basin, was again added to the four-team NE District bracket and the Pioneers proved to be too much for the NE schools, winning both district games easily. Clearmont was given a chance at a play-in game with Hawk Springs on day one of the state tourney, but the Panthers lost a close one and their season was over.

Rat Droppings***Morris Zempel hired me in autumn of 1976 to teach sixth grade language arts and social studies at Lusk Middle School, the first of a dozen or so principals I worked for in my 34 years there. ‘Zemp’ left three years later and one of his final acts was to name me seventh grade middle school girls basketball coach. I knew nothing about coaching hoops—Lady Tiger fans agreed with that fact for the next 25 years—nonetheless, I eventually became the head middle school coach in 1983.

Rat Droppings***When the Rat started teaching at Lusk Middle School in autumn of 1976, the science teacher there was Don Larsen, who at times mentored this noobie instructor, his insight certainly worth more than my four years of college education classes. Don had long since waved goodbye to coaching by then but there were few I taught with that knew more about middle school learners, especially special needs students. Don was also decades ahead of the rest of us in envisioning computers as a key part of future classroom instruction.

Southeast
Of the two southeast AA schools, Cheyenne had the better chance of a high placing at the state tourney. Laramie’s year was forgettable and it marked the end of Vern Jensen’s tenure as the Plainsmen’s head coach. Cheyenne, denied a chance at the state tourney in 1959, had a puncher’s chance at the title, winning one of three regular season battles versus eventual champ Rock Springs, winning both games from Sheridan, and splitting four contests with Natrona. The Indians breezed through the district play, taking first in an all-Cheyenne final over St. Mary’s. A loss to Sheridan in the opening round at state exiled Coach Storey’s crew to the consolation rounds, losing on the final day to Star Valley.
St. Mary’s was the best of a tepid Class A bunch in the southeast as the SE teams played Big Horn Basin teams to a combined 3-8 regular season record. The Gaels finished second at district ahead of Douglas and the host team Torrington, the other two schools to qualify for the 16 team AA/A bracket. Torrington was 0-2 at state while St. Mary’s and Douglas managed to win their openers, then drop their Thursday game, exiting the Big Dance with 1-1 records. All three teams were eliminated by AA schools in their final day of play.
All eyes were on University Prep as the Buckaroos battled their way to an undefeated regular season in the Texas Trail Conference. They won all of their games and those at district by double-digit margins. Unfortunately for the Buckaroos, St. Stephens on the other side of the state had a similar course to the finals, setting up a classic Class B championship tilt, a repeat of the previous year. A solid Pine Bluffs team finished second at district and conference runners-up Guernsey took the No. 3 SE seed for the 12-team Class B state tourney bracket. Guernsey was 0-2 at state while Pine Bluffs dropped its opener to Cowley then rebounded to take consolation honors. As for Prep, after making the finals again, St. Stephens continued to have their number, winning 71-55, the only blemish on their 25-win season.
Class C play continued to be the purview of the SE schools as LaGrange continued its run of state championships. The finale again matched the Longhorns against Carpenter and LaGrange triumphed by six in taking all the marbles. The Longhorns finished with a 25-1 record, losing only to Class B Pine Bluffs during the season. Carpenter posted an undefeated regular season East Laramie Conference record and finished third in district play. Yoder surprised Carpenter in the district semis and finished as the No. 2 SE seed. Hawk Springs was awarded a play-in game against NE District runners-up Clearmont and qualified for the eight-team Class C state tourney bracket, as well. In fact, Yoder and Hawk Springs met in the third-place game, which the Bobcats won, ending another successful run at state by the SE Class C schools.

It was turmoil as usual in the Big Horn Basin, as the regular season champs didn’t qualify for state and the conference’s two cellar dwellers did. Cody and Lovell staged a regular-season battle for the top spot in the conference, which was settled by the Broncs’ two wins over the Bulldogs. What with the district tourney being held in their home town, Cody was a definitive favorite to take it all. Cody lost its opener to county nemesis, No. 8 seed Powell, and was rudely bounced from the tourney in consolation play the next day. Lovell took district honors with three lopsided wins. Worland lost to the Bulldogs in the final, securing the No. 2 NW seed. Thermopolis and Powell battled through consolation play to finish as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively. At state, Lovell made the semis, but lost to eventual champion Rock Springs. The Bulldogs atoned the loss on Saturday with a third-place finish. Powell and Thermopolis both ended their tourneys on Thursday with 0-2 marks. Worland lasted one more day, exiting with a 1-2 record.
For St. Stephens it was sheer perfection as the Eagles finished the season undefeated at 28-0. Compared to its finals opponent, University Prep, St. Stephens had several wins by less than double digits, but the Eagles’ 16-point finals win over the Buckaroos left little doubt as to the best Class B team in the state. Cowley had a fine season and finished second, both in the regular season and at the district tourney in Thermopolis. The No. 3 NW seed turned out to be Pavillion, as the Panthers dropped their district opener to Manderson and then won three lopsided consolation games. At Laramie, Cowley made the semifinal round, losing to UPrep and then lost the next day in the third-place game. Pavillion won its opener in the 12-team bracket, but lost the next day to St. Stephens, exiting with a 1-1 mark.
There was only one Class C team—Ten Sleep— in the NW as Dubois had moved into the Class B ranks. In the regular season Ten Sleep played Class B competition, which certainly helped the Pioneers when they played again in the NE district tourney in Gillette. Ten Sleep easily won both its district games and entered the state tourney with the No. 1 NE/NW seed. Unfortunately, they faced defending champion LaGrange in the opener and lost. The Pioneers then bounced back with two victories over SW teams to capture consolation honors.

Southwest
It was an excellent year for the SW teams, particularly in the Class AA/A ranks. Rock Springs took four straight wins in Laramie for its first state championship in a decade. The Tigers lost one regular-season game in December, two in January, one in February and none in March on their way to the title. Rawlins, playing again as an AA-sized school, made the semifinal round at state and eventually lost to Lovell in the third-place game. Class A Star Valley—the No. 2 SW seed—which tied with Rock Springs for regular-season conference honors, dropped its state tourney opener to Lovell, then rebounded to snare the consolation trophy. Green River was the No. 4 SW seed at state and won its opener but was bounced from further competition by Lovell. The Wolves exited with a 1-1 mark in Laramie.
Class B Cokeville, Lyman and Superior all posted double-digit victories in conference play, but the Dragons were, well, superior to the others by copping the regular-season championship, district honors in Green River, and posting a third-place finish in Laramie. Superior wasn’t quite up to St. Stephens’ caliber as its semifinal loss to the Eagles was certainly lopsided. Still, the Dragons dispatched a fine NW team—Cowley—in their final game in Laramie. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 SW seeds, Lyman and Cokeville respectively, won their openers at state but were eliminated on Thursday with losses, Cokeville to University Prep and Lyman to Superior.
Three teams qualified for the state tourney at the Class C district tourney in Saratoga. It was no surprise to see SW conference co-champions Rock River and Encampment in the district finals. Each team had a regular-season home win over the other, and it was Rock River that captured district honors with a six-point win over the Tigers. Snake River took district consolation honors, earning the No. 3 SW seed to Laramie and state. Each of the three teams lost to a SE district team in the opener and Snake River and Encampment both lost as well on Friday, heading home with 0-2 state tourney marks. Rock River bowed to Ten Sleep in the consolation championship on Saturday, racking up a 1-2 record.
