Noteworthy Events of the 1948-1949 Season
1. The Infamous Blizzard of ’49—The research into this particular basketball season has more than its share of gaps in it, and much of the blame there can be directed at the miserable weather endured by the state from the initial days of January through mid-February. Dozens of games were postponed, rescheduled, postponed again, and at times, never contested. The southeast corner of the state was most affected by this initially, but several more storms brought cancellations to the central and northeast areas, along with the entire southern tier. (The snow that fell in early January was “stay snow” as old northern woodsmen referred to the phenomenon, as it “stayed” until late spring. Subsequent blizzards and smaller storms just added to the accumulation, and omnipresent Wyoming wind just kept rearranging the drifts.) The Big Horn Basin was spared the spate of cancellations, but several Basin communities racked up record lows in the negative 40s, absolutely lethal conditions to be hauling a basketball team anywhere.
Class B towns suffered the most during this stretch of time. Keeping the state’s main highways open became a priority, and rural communities away from these roads had to endure hardship as a consequence, as well as no trains, no food supplies to restock stores and no mail. Some southeast schools didn’t open for two or three weeks. And just because school was open didn’t mean that the rural students could make it to class. Coaches made do, playing games at times without several of their starters who were still snowed in. Rural community reporters, usually housewives who sent in a weekly update of doings around their township, farms and ranches—and oftentimes a key source to many small school game results—had little to report as they were snowed in, kept out of the loop.
And just because a team made the away trip to a different school didn’t guarantee the road would be open once the game was completed. A recurring story is that of a team forced to spend the night with members of the host team, waiting for next day’s sunshine and/or possibly a plow. And the postponements began to build up, making a mockery of conference play. In the Southeast Laramie County Conference, several teams had to play up to five conference games in the space of ten days to complete the schedule prior to the district tourney.
Let’s just say the Rat tried to get it right and hopefully some yet-to-be-found yearbooks and school newspapers will help fill in some of the gaps down the road.
2. Have a Great December, Coach Weir?—Green River coach Jim Weir had an interesting and eventful December, starting with a tournament in Casper, held the week before Christmas. Because the football team had had playoff games lasting until nearly the end of November, Coach Weir’s roundballers had not played a single game, which made them the last Class A team to begin their season. They drew Casper Natrona—eventually the state champion—in the opener and lost by over 20 points. The second night Green River played Worland in a close game, losing by three. Several nights later, the Wolves lost their home opener to Superior by a single point. It was a promising start for an inexperienced team.
Around midnight that same evening, after getting a call about some of his players being out and about, Coach Weir and his assistant coach drove around town and found a group of his players smoking and keeping late hours, obvious violations of the school’s training rules. The ringleader, his senior starting guard and all-state footballer, was dismissed from the team. Four other members—at least three of them on the varsity—were suspended until further notice. The shortage of players was problematic but Coach Weir said he’d play those who kept training rules on their late December jaunt to Laramie and Rawlins.
Those games never happened. Traveling in two cars to Laramie, the trailing car was involved in a three-car pileup and the assistant coach and four players were hospitalized in Rawlins. Weir learned about the accident when the lead car reached Laramie. The team turned around and headed home and the Laramie game was canceled. The game at Rawlins was eventually rescheduled. Rumors flew that the Green River team would cancel the remainder of the season, but Coach Weir, whose initial player roster had been whittled down from 20 players to 11, said that Green River would complete their season as scheduled. (Green River did OK in their final two months and came within a game of reaching the state tourney, losing a Saturday morning eliminator game at the district tourney.)
3. The Class A winner is—Casper Natrona, led by Coach Earl ‘Shadow’ Ray, established its dominance early on in the season, winning 10 in a row before dropping a game in Worland. The Mustangs, rusty from no competition due to cancellations, had a rough pass in Cheyenne in late January, dropping two tight games to the Indians. But their final close loss to Midwest toward the end of February was their only district loss. The host Mustangs, helped by Sheridan’s upset of Midwest at the district tourney, breezed through to the district championship with two easy wins. At the state tourney, the Mustangs won a tough opener against Thermopolis by five, then found easy sailing in the subsequent three games with double digit point spreads, winning the state championship.
4. For Class B—Several schools had excellent regular season records entering the state tourney. In the southeast, Lingle had the best record at 24-1, although their perfect season was ended in the district finals by a tough Glenrock squad. In the southwest, Uinta County neighbors Lyman and Mt. View had pretty well dominated the competition and Lyman had the upper hand with three wins over Mt. View. Clearmont’s record in the northeast was stellar. Northwest schools Byron and Cowley were the cream of the Big Horn Basin, with Cowley holding a 2-1 edge in games over Byron. Byron, Lingle, Cowley and Mt. View made the semis at state and the Big Horn Basin schools both won to set up a fourth game between the Eagle and Jaguars. Byron won their second straight state hoops championship with an eight-point win over Cowley.

Northeast
District doings played out in Casper for the first time instead of Gillette, which had hosted the gathering for the past two decades. Host Natrona was favored over the rest of the Class A field, although some expected Midwest—a winner over the Mustangs in late February—to give them stiff competition in the finals. That pairing never materialized as Sheridan upset the Oilers in the semis. Casper had an easy time of it with a lopsided victory over Gillette. Midwest and Gillette atoned with wins in loser out games and battled it out for the No. 3 and 4 seeds with the Oilers winning handily. Casper polished off Sheridan for district honors and the No. 1 seed.
Clearmont was the clear-cut favorite posting an 18-2 record against Class B foes during the regular season. The Panthers easily made the semifinals along with Upton, Ranchester and upstart Arvada. Upton and Ranchester played a close game, the Bobcats winning by one, while Clearmont sent Arvada packing. Clearmont then bested Upton for the championship. Ranchester won two Saturday morning eliminator games to garner the No. 3 seed.
At the state tourney, the Class B representatives were all eliminated before Saturday’s session began. Ranchester went 0-2 and was gone by Thursday while both Clearmont and Upton posted 1-2 records. Clearmont had one of the best Class B records in the state, but wasn’t quite the caliber of Byron, Cowley, Lyman, Lingle or Mt. View. Casper Natrona brought some needed glory to the northeast quadrant as they shined in Laramie, hanging up the state championship banner with four easy victories. Sheridan and Gillette had identical 0-2 showings, while Midwest lasted three days, exiting with a 1-2 mark.

Southeast
Seven teams met in Wheatland to determine which schools would represent Southeast Wyoming at the state tourney. Wheatland and Cheyenne had a home win over the other during the regular season and many thought this was the rare year when a team other than the Indians would emerge as the No. 1 seed. The Bulldogs faced Laramie in the semis while Cheyenne squared off with an improved Lusk team. Both favorites won relatively close games to attain the finals while semifinal losers Lusk and Laramie faced Saturday eliminator games. Lusk won a nail-biter over Torrington and Laramie lost to tournament Cinderella, Douglas, by two points, as well. The Tigers topped the Bearcats by a single point for third and fourth seeds. Cheyenne had an easy time in the championship final, dispatching the hosts to the second seed spot.
Twenty Class B teams gathered in Cheyenne (Rock River opted for the SW District) and Lingle was the prohibitive favorite, sporting an undefeated season in regular season play. LaGrange was the champion of the Goshen Hole Conference and Pine Bluffs did likewise in the East Laramie County Conference. But the North Platte Conference teams flexed their muscle in Cheyenne, with three of the four semifinalists: Lingle, Guernsey and Glenrock. The Bulldoggers easily handled the Guernsey Longhorns, while the Sheepherders throttled the LaGrange Longhorns. Glenrock needed overtime to upset Lingle for the district championship while Guernsey took the third seed from LaGrange, sending that school to the fifth (and final, as the SE sent five instead of six teams) seed. Pine Bluffs came through the consolation brackets to merit the fourth seed.
At the state tourney, Cheyenne and Lusk lasted all four days, the Indians losing to Rock Springs in the fourth-place game and the Tigers dropping the third-place tilt to Lovell. Wheatland managed one win in three days while Douglas was two and done. In Class B, Lingle and Glenrock mirrored the luck of Cheyenne and Lusk, as the Bulldoggers lost in the third-place game, the Sheepherders doing likewise in the fourth-place game, to Unita County schools Mt. View and Lyman, respectively. Guernsey won one game in three days while LaGrange and Pine Bluffs were two and out.

Northwest
The nine Class A teams met in Greybull starting with an eliminator game on March 2. Cody, Basin, Lander and Lovell made it through the first full day into the semis. Lovell and Cody, co-champs of the Big Horn Basin, held true to form, winning on Friday to advance to the finals. Worland and regular season underachiever Thermopolis met in the third- and fourth-place game after winning Saturday morning eliminators. The Warriors defeated the Bobcats handily. Cody won the rubber game with Lovell—both had won at home against the other during the regular season—by a lopsided score to punctuate the championship.
The week before Class B Big Horn Basin co-champions Byron and Cowley were prohibitive favorites to make the finals as each team had defeated the other—on the road!— as their only Class B losses. Playing in Worland, Cowley faced Burlington in the semis and Byron took on Deaver. The two favorites cruised to the finals. Deaver won a Saturday eliminator game while Burlington was upset by Shoshoni in the other eliminator game. Deaver won handily over Shoshoni for third place, but both teams were added to the brackets for the state tourney in Laramie as the Big Horn Basin sent four. Cowley squeaked by with a two-point win over Byron for the championship.
It was a strong showing at the state tourney by the eight Big Horn Basin representatives. In Class B Byron and Cowley squared off again for the championship of the whole shooting match. Byron took home the state championship trophy with a surprising eight-point win. Deaver and Shoshoni shook off opening round losses by winning their Thursday and Friday games to face each other in the consolation finals. Deaver won a close game over Shoshoni and the consolation honors. In Class A, Lovell garnered a third-place finish. Cody was eliminated on Friday with a 1-2 record as was Worland. Only Thermopolis was hung with an 0-2 record and a Thursday elimination.

Southwest
Although the southwest was spared (somewhat) from the terrible weather that struck the southeast corner of the state in early January, subsequent blizzards and storms, particularly in mid-February, made it difficult for the far-flung teams to complete their regular seasons as scheduled. Four Class A teams all had a shot at the conference championship and had they been able to play out the entire schedule, things might’ve ended up differently. Rock Springs had a Jekyll and Hyde season and wasn’t figured to be a factor at the district tourney in Green River. But the Tigers surprised with a win over Star Valley in the opener, and Rawlins was bumped to the eliminator rounds by Green River, while Kemmerer and Reliance won as expected. Rock Springs continued to excel, upsetting Kemmerer in the semis while Reliance won over Green River. Kemmerer and Star Valley, after winning eliminator games, met for third and fourth with Star Valley taking the No. 3 seed. Rock Springs, still keeping Mr. Hyde at bay, won the district championship by a single point.
In Class B, the smart money was on Lyman and Mt. View to meet in the finals at the district tourney in Rock Springs the weekend prior to the Class A tourney. True to form, Lyman and Mt. View won their way into the championship game. Sent to Saturday morning eliminator games, Cokeville and state tourney regular Hanna and emerged to battle it out for the third and fourth place spots at state, with the Miners winning easily over the Panthers. Lyman continue its mastery over Mt. View in the championship with a three-point win.
At state Class A, Reliance played the role of Cinderella, finding its way to the championship finals. The Pirates lost to Natrona to carry home runners-up honors. Rock Springs continued to surprise, lasting all four days and taking fourth place. Kemmerer and Star Valley also stayed the entire time, with the Rangers taking home the consolation trophy, defeating the Braves. In Class B, powerhouses Mt. View took third Lyman took fourth. Hanna lasted three days while Cokeville was two and done. All in all, even without winning a state championship, the southwest shined in both classifications.
