Noteworthy Events of the 1944-1945 Season
1. Goodbye to WWII—The Rat can’t say he’s all that sad to see WWII disappear from the headlines. Understandably, war news was at a premium and trivial things like basketball scores assumed a place of unimportance. Newspaper staffs, particularly sports departments, were affected by the exodus of males into the armed forces, making for poorer coverage, if a local sporting event was covered at all. Class B schools, in particular, have significant gaps in their season records for all the war years. Our hope is, down the road, the gaps accrued during WWII will be filled in, maybe by unearthing yearbooks or possibly school newspapers from the smaller schools.
2. A True Hero—One of Wyoming’s more famous POWs was Captain Johnny Winterholler, who was captured by the Japanese forces at Bataan in early 1942. Forced to undergo the infamous “Death March” across the island of Luzon in the Philippines, a distance of about 70 miles in sweltering jungle heat, Johnny was fortunate to have survived—5,000 to 18,000 POWs did not—that ordeal as well as three years of internment in various POW camps. The confinement eventually led to an untreated hematoma in his back and he lost use of his legs.
In his high school days, Johnny was a standout for Lovell in three sports. He was all-state in football in 1934 as well all-state tournament for the 1933-34 and 1934-35 basketball seasons. At UW, Johnny lettered in football (was the Pokes’ leading rusher one year, honorable All-American), basketball (led in scoring, all-conference), track and baseball (all-conference, offered tryouts with Cardinals and Red Sox.) Instead of taking the tryouts, he enlisted in the Marines upon graduating in 1940.
As the WWII progressed, Big Horn Basin newspapers would update the locals via shared postcard updates to his fiancée and parents, the only form of communication allowed by his captors. Liberated from his POW status shortly before the war ended, Johnny was shipped home where he eventually married his betrothed and they relocated to California. As part of his rehabilitation, now promoted Colonel Winterholler helped develop one of the first wheelchair basketball squads—then in its infancy as a sport—and became a star again. Johnny and his sweetheart Dessa raised two boys and he managed a doctor’s office, in Lafayette, California.
In 1985 Lovell named its high school hardcourt Winterholler Gymnasium, proof that his hometown had never forgotten him and his sacrifice. Johnny was enshrined into the University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993 and he passed away in 2001.
3. Army teams—Another phenomena crowding out local prep scores were games played by teams from Army and Army Air Corps bases around the region. In particular, the efforts of the basketball (and football) teams from Ft. Warren in Cheyenne captured the imagination of sports fans throughout Wyoming. It does seem a tad odd that many army, air corps and naval installations had sports teams at this critical time in U.S. history—it could be argued it was a misuse of manpower—but in terms of endearing draftees from around the country to their local hosts, it was a public relations coup. At times, high school squads from around the state played against enlisted teams and even UW squared off in hoops against the Ft. Warren Broncos. Since this is first and foremost a record of prep teams, I’ve chosen not to list the results if a high school team played against a team from a nearby post—it did happen—as part of their season records. It’s strictly high school team versus high school team for this research.
4. A three point basket—it’ll never happen—The rat ran across an article in the Rock Springs paper published by the NEA, the Newspaper Enterprise Association. In it, proposed changes to the game of basketball were being championed by Coach Howard A. Hobson. Two potential changes stand out. The first is the widening of the lane area to a rectangle, thereby removing the “key” shaped paint area. Said change would eliminate much of the goal-tending and would widen the three-second area from six feet to 12. This eventually happened in the early 1950s. Another suggestion was to have a three point field goal for any shot taken from a line 21 feet away from the basket. That suggestion would take much longer to be adopted, not until the mid-1980s.
5. Fouling out takes five—Although some bemoaned the rule change, saying it would make the game more rough and tumble, the number of fouls needed for disqualification from a game was increased from four to five.
6. Sacrifices brought about by WWII—A brief note in the Lander paper entitled “High School Cage Men Need Shoes” pointed out that the Tigers were in need of rubber-soled shoes. They had only 14 pair and needed a dozen more, sized 5 to 11 inclusive. Wartime rubber shortages meant players had to scrounge up shoes significantly inferior for playing during the duration of the war.

Northeast
Seven Class A teams met in Gillette for the NE district tourney. Casper Natrona earned a bye for the first round while Midwest, Buffalo and the host Camels also qualified for semifinal action. Buffalo surprised Midwest in one semi while Casper easily took care of Gillette in the other. Casper Natrona then won the championship game, defeating the Thundering Herd by 21 points. Gillette and Midwest won loser-out games and met for third and fourth places, guaranteeing their appearance in Laramie at the State Tourney in two weeks’ time. Gillette took third over the Oilers.
Seven Class B teams also took to the court in Gillette, with Upton meriting a bye to the semis. Ranchester, Rozet and Big Horn were the other first round winners. Rozet dispatched Ranchester easily in their semifinal game, while Upton did the same to Big Horn. In the finale, perennial powerhouse Rozet was again the winner by nine over the Bobcats.
At State B in Laramie, both Upton and Rozet lost their first games, won their second and met the final day to play for consolation honors. Upton took a measure of revenge over the Mustangs, dispatching the Campbell County team by 20 points. In the A portion of the tourney, Casper Natrona won three straight before dropping their final game to state champion Cheyenne. Of the five games the Mustangs lost that season, four were to the Indians, all in all an excellent season for the Class A runners-up. Midwest and Buffalo were two and out at the four-day affair, while Gillette managed to win one game of the three they played.

Southeast
Six Class A teams met at Wheatland the first weekend in March to determine the four teams that would represent the southeast at the mid-month’s state tourney in Laramie. Instead of the usual Cheyenne and Laramie final, the host Bulldogs found themselves playing Cheyenne for all the marbles, continuing their mastery over the Plainsmen for the third time in the semis. Wheatland hung close to the Indians but lost by six, meaning another district crown for Coach Okie Blanchard. Laramie easily won a Saturday eliminator game with Lusk, then did likewise over Torrington in the third/fourth place game, which was not bad for John Deti’s first year as a Laramie coach.
The Class B field featured 19 teams—each assured two games—and the unfairness accorded Class B schools is plain to see. Only two of the 19 teams would go to the state B tourney in Laramie. The bracket must’ve resembled a double helix of DNA, and four programs slugged their way into the semis: Sunrise, Albin, Huntley and Hillsdale. Sunrise, the class of the North Platte sextet, defeated Albin by a half dozen points to reach the finals. Huntley, cream of the crop of the Goshen Hole Conference, easily ousted Hillsdale, the champion of the East Laramie County Conference. Sunrise won by two over Huntley in the finals, Hillsdale took third, and Pine Bluffs took consolation honors by winning four straight over two days following their opening-round loss.
At Laramie, Sunrise had better luck than Huntley in the Class B bracket, winning their first game and just missing the finals by two points to Cokeville. Sunrise lost in their try for third place honors. Huntley was two losses and done. For Class A, the Cheyenne Indians again captured the state championship with a six-point win—the closest of their four wins—over Casper Natrona. Wheatland took fourth place honors with a 3-1 record. Host team Laramie made the consolation championship and lost to Rock Springs, finishing with a 2-2 mark at state. Torrington went 0-2, losing to Rawlins and Thermopolis.

Northwest
Greybull was the site of the NW district tourney and nine Class A teams meant for a more-than-full bracket. Top seed Powell had blasted through its Big Horn Basin schedule just like its football season, that is, undefeated. Powell did have some Wyoming losses but they were out-of-district ones: two to Casper Natrona and one to Rawlins. Powell didn’t disappoint as it won its first round game along with the host Buffaloes, Thermopolis and Worland. Powell easily dispatched Greybull in one semifinal game while Worland ousted Thermopolis to the third and fourth place game. On the final day, Thermopolis won over Greybull to solidify the third and fourth place seeds, while Powell breezed past Worland to claim the top spot.
Ten Class B teams also scrapped for NW district bragging rights, led by Ten Sleep, which had breezed through all its Class B opposition undefeated. Ten Sleep easily won its first round game, as did Manderson, Byron and Cowley. In the semis, Ten Sleep eked out a win over Manderson while Cowley dispatched Byron away from further postseason play. Cowley pulled off the upset on the last day, handing Ten Sleep its first Class B loss of the year.
At Laramie, Cowley continued its fine play, losing by one to the eventual champions Hanna in the semis and bouncing back to take third place over Sunrise. Ten Sleep found the Gem City as a poor place to visit, dropping both of their games. For Class A, many were predicting a Powell/Cheyenne final, somewhat wishful thinking carried over from a playoff-less football season, as many thought the schools’ two grid teams were Wyoming’s best. Alas, the pairing didn’t happen on the hardcourt, although Powell did finish third. (A third [one point!] loss to Casper Natrona in the semis kept the Panthers out of championship contention. ) Greybull split its four games, losing their final one to Wheatland in the fourth place contest. Thermopolis lasted three days, winning one game, while Worland went 0-2.

Rat Droppings***Even with the announcement that the Heart Mountain facility would be closed in December of 1945, two road games were cancelled for the Eagles, one to Byron and one to Red Lodge. Only their B squad trip to Deaver was a road trip. The Eagles did have a huge advantage at home, however, as their 1,500-seat gymnasium was often SRO for games. No mention of the Eagles having a chance to play at the district tourney was even brought up this season, unlike the previous two seasons. The season was declared over at Valentine’s Day.

Rat Droppings***I’ve been hesitant to list any standings I’ve found during WWII. For one, they were usually submitted by people outside of the press and are generally inaccurate. However for this particular season the Class A standings are spot on. The above Class B one wasn’t, the W column doesn’t equal the L one in totals. I’m missing two games for Manderson and I’ll bet dollars to donuts the missing game for Shoshoni and Morton was between those two schools, a home game at Morton (or wherever the Broncs held their games) and probably a Shoshoni win. The two games between Byron’s B and Deaver were counted as varsity wins for Byron, varsity losses for Deaver. I wouldn’t normally count them that way but those that seeded the NW District B tourney did, so I’ll defer to them just this once.

Southwest
With Reliance moving to the Class B bracket, only seven Class A teams squared off in Green River. The favorites were Rock Springs and Green River, but both were upset in the semis, the Tigers by Star Valley and the hosts by Rawlins. Star Valley took care of the Outlaws in the final while Green River and Rock Springs met for third and fourth, after winning loser out games early in the day. Rock Springs garnered third place with a close win over the Wolves.
The Class B bracket was more than full, necessitating two games for lower seed winners on the first day. Cokeville, Reliance, Mt. View and Hanna all made the semis and Cokeville and Hanna both won on the second night. Hanna took all the marbles in the championship, easily besting the Panthers. Reliance and Mt. View won loser out games to battle for third place, with the Pirates besting the Buffalos.
At State A, Star Valley and Rock Springs lasted all four days. The Cheesemakers lost to Powell in the third place game and Rock Springs took the consolation championship. Both Green River and Rawlins won their initial games, but dropped their next two. In Class B the SW teams finished first and second, as Hanna repeated its district championship win over Cokeville, a state championship for the Miners.
