Noteworthy Events of the 1941-1942 Season
1. WWII Effects—Coaching
The bombing at Pearl Harbor ushered the United States into World War II and young men in Wyoming were anxious to enlist; the sooner, the better. Single coaches, in particular, were apparently as patriotic as any demographic out there, often being assigned duties as physical training leaders, getting the mass of volunteers and draftees into fighting shape. As one scans the ’41-’42 hoops record, several teams changed coaches mid-season. Uncle Sam waited for no one, so sometimes their departure was missed at key moments in the season. For example, Coach Howard Bash of Rock Springs left for training right after the Tigers took the district tourney and missed seeing his boys play at state tourney. Burns’ ball club probably suffered the most with at least four temporary head coaches during the season.
2. WWII Effects—Players
If one was an upperclassman male, the temptation was strong to enlist prior to graduating. In spite of entreaties from school officials and an official plea from Wyoming’s Superintendent of Public Instruction for the boys to finish their schooling, many boys did enlist prior to graduating. The reasons for doing so were primarily patriotic, wanting to get their licks in before the war was over. Enlistees had a bit more say as to which branch of the service they wished to serve unlike those who were draftees. [The Rat guesses that some volunteered to exit school and studies ASAP; possibly some wanted the uniform to impress females; peer pressure might’ve influenced some while some were smitten by the swashbuckling, romantic notions of war. No matter the reason, all were patriots for their service, part of “The Greatest Generation” as Tom Brokaw coined it.]
Understandably, basketball became less of a big deal during the duration of the war. And because players left school early for the service, team’s fortunes changed overnight. For example, Newcastle, which had returned most of their starters from the ’40-’41 season—a season where they had qualified for the Class A state tourney—were absent two brothers who volunteered days after Pearl Harbor. The team won about a third of its games—quite a change from a 6-2 football season record the Dogies posted that autumn. Uncle Sam’s gain was Newcastle’s loss.
3. WWII Effects—Hardships Imposed
The sacrifices made during WWII certainly show the spirit of the population as they scrimped and suffered so products could be siphoned to the war effort. Tires, for example, almost caused Encampment to cancel their basketball season. Tires—which wore out easily in the 1940s—were strictly rationed. The school board voted to cancel the season in mid-January as a means of reducing travel and patriotically saving rubber. Coach David McDonald announced this to the wire services but no other district followed suit. Buoyed by their two wins over nearby rival Saratoga in February, Encampment was able to finish their season at district in Green River to conclude their season.
Most schools in Wyoming adopted the six day school week—so that school could be let out earlier in May—that way rural kids could help with planting (and harvesting in autumn) since Uncle Sam had commandeered much of the male population for the military. “War Time”/Daylight Saving Time was adopted in early February so people could make the most of the daylight hours. This was important since blackout conditions and drills were part of Civil Defense edicts. Student athletes endured one day weekends, fewer Saturday games and traveled to school in pitch darkness, sacrifices for the greater good of the war effort.
Coverage of ball games is spotty for some schools. Quite frankly, the war was bigger news and some newspapers devoted little to no space for their local teams, even less if the team was posting a poor record. At this time many thought that high school sports would become more popular but that college ball—lacking in athletes—would fade away until the soldiers were brought home. That didn’t happen, of course, but the renaissance of high school ball didn’t happen in the winter of 1942, at least in Wyoming. The Rat apologizes for some spotty results. Hopefully some yearbooks, when found down the road, might fill in some gaps.
4. Cody 3 Meeteetse 2—December 6, 1941—one day shy of the Pearl Harbor attack—is a date that will live in infamy, well, at least to those who love offense in basketball games. This score is not some sort of forfeit but an actual score of an entire game played in Meeteetse. “The game was far better than the score indicated, spectators said, and kept everyone on edge until the final gun,” the Cody Enterprise reported. Each team scored a free throw in the first quarter and then went scoreless until the final quarter when Cody’s Bob Creager sunk the game’s only field goal. Meeteetse sank another free throw but couldn’t force overtime. Meeteetse’s narrow court gave the Broncs a lot of difficulty, according to the Cody paper. The Rock Springs Rocket wrote a few words about the game with this title: “The Score Equals the Odds in This Basketball Game.” The coach of Meeteetse? John Deti…yes, that John Deti of Laramie High football fame. Maybe he had his Tigers blocking and tackling that particular day.
5. And the Class A Champion—Cheyenne played its best ball the final few weeks of the season and breezed through district and state tourney play. At the helm of the Indians was Walter Dowler, having made the move from Rock Springs to teach and coach in the Capitol City. [Only three coaches won state championships in the years from the beginning of seeded, bracketed tourneys in 1932: Okie Blanchard with five, Floyd Foreman two, and Walter Dowler three.] Casper Natrona and Midwest were contenders from the NE, while Thermopolis and Lovell from the NW, Laramie from the SE and Rock Springs from the SW were all considered contenders heading into the state tourney. Cheyenne finally won a championship that had eluded them for over a decade.
6. A Basket Shy of Perfection—Generally the Class B programs were ignored by the media at this point in time—made worse by increased coverage of WWII—but the little school in Rozet began to open eyes around the state as they made a run at an undefeated season. Rozet played both Class A and B competition and had a 27-game winning streak heading into Casper. The Mustangs extended the streak to 29 games reaching the finals where they played a tough Lyman team. Lyman had a few more losses during the season—three to Class A SW teams—but had gone through the regular season in Class B and the district tourney undefeated. The finale was a close game the whole way with Lyman eking out a one-point win. The Eagles were state champs, placing four players on the all-state tourney team.

9. Gaskell brothers—A common (and lazy) thread in sports reporting at that time was referring to the players by last name only. I’m almost 99.9 percent sure that the Gaskell brother that attained all-state status is Reese Gaskell and not his younger brother Elwood. Reese was a speedy guard who ran things and could put up points and his brother just didn’t have the stats at district and state to convince me otherwise. The first round of the state tourney matched Hanna’s Gaskell brothers versus Carpenter, which sported the Schliske brothers (Bob and Hilbert). I was able to confirm that Bob was the all-stater from some Laramie county newspapers, but since Hanna is in a news coverage-free—at least for sports—area, I could never find a kill-shot source that their all-stater was definitely Reese. It’ll have to do for now…

Northeast
The finals of the Class A district tourney at Gillette played out according to Hoyle as the two best teams, Casper Natrona and Midwest, met to play the rubber game of the 41-42 season. Each team had won on the other’s home court during the regular season. The teams bested by the Mustangs and Oilers in the semis—Sheridan and Gillette—won early eliminator games on Saturday morning and played for third and fourth, with the Broncs winning over the Camels for the No. 3 seed. Casper Natrona had an easy time of it in the finals, routing Midwest by 14 points. Two weeks later at the state tourney, not one of the qualifiers made it to the final day. Both Casper and Midwest had first-round wins but proceeded to lose their next two games. Gillette lasted a day longer than Sheridan by posting a win after a first-round loss. Sheridan was two and done in Casper.
Rozet was the odds-on favorite to take the Class B, having posted a perfect regular season record. They didn’t disappoint during district play as they racked up three easy wins. Their final win was over Big Horn, which had played the Mustangs close on one previous occasion. At Casper, Rozet blasted through the first two days with ease to the finals where they faced Lyman. Sadly, they came up short by one point, losing 29-28 to the Eagles. Like Sheridan, Big Horn was two and done in Casper.

Southeast
Cheyenne finally ended its decade-long drought of state hoops championships by hiring Walter Dowler from Rock Springs. The Indians only lost four games all season long, three of them in Natrona County. They caught fire the final few weeks of the season and only Laramie could come within 10 points of Cheyenne (at district in Wheatland). Laramie finished third at state, certainly the best showing from the SE corner of Wyoming to date. Third place Lusk and fourth-place Wheatland and were two and done in Casper.
Again, the bracket for the Class B portion of the district tourney showed just eight of the 20-plus teams. Hillsdale played the Albany County representative for the final spot in the bracket— losing in a draw of cards to fellow tri-champions of the East Laramie Conference, Carpenter and Pine Bluffs—but defeating University Prep to play at district. Sunrise, Ft. Laramie and Guernsey represented the North Platte Conference while Chugwater and LaGrange took laurels from Goshen Hole Conference. Carpenter and Chugwater met in the finals with the Coyotes squeaking by Sunrise and the Buffalos outlasting Hillsdale in the semis. Chugwater took first. Two weekends later in Casper neither team placed, although Chugwater did play for consolation honors, losing to Shoshoni. Carpenter was two and done.

Rat Droppings***I found a conflict with the 12/5 game at Hawk Springs. The Veteran community reporter for the Lingle Guide-Review tabbed this as a Veteran win with the score reported as 13 to 11. I choose to believe, however, a Torrington Telegram sports column from a week later where no score is listed but the columnist mentions that Veteran is 0-2 after their first two conference games. It’s rare to find differing accounts of wins, differing scores—yes; different teams winning—no. Still, wins were rare as hen’s teeth for Veteran, and I’d hate to be the one who denied them a (potential) sole win to their season.

Rat Droppings***This is the closest approximation to the league standings I could come up with, as no paper published an actual standings account at the end of the season. A mention of Guernsey and Ft. Laramie playing to break the tie for second in an extra game in a Platte County paper leads me to believe their conference records were both 6-4 heading into that game (the extra game isn’t figured into the above standings count.) Somewhere along the line I’ve copied some incorrect data because I have Lingle at 5-5 down in the season record for the Doggers and Guernsey at 5-5. If that is correct, then Ft. Laramie and Guernsey didn’t need to play the extra tie-breaker. It’s my mistake which I’ll need to correct if I can find some yearbooks to help me down the road.

The District No. 3 tourney in Worland had its moments of surprises, although the two finalists—Lovell and Thermopolis—were expected. The biggest stunners centered around the successes of the two Fremont County teams, Lander and Riverton. Both teams found their way into the semis with a pair of relatively easy wins, save for Lander’s three-point upset squeaker over Byron. Neither team could repeat their victories in the semis, so they played for third and fourth place with the Tigers avenging two regular-season losses to the Wolverines with a seven-point win. Lovell was once again the top dog [Bulldog?] with an easy win over runners-up Thermopolis. At state in Casper, Thermop lost in the championship finals to Cheyenne while Lovell dropped the third-place game to Laramie. Riverton made it to the consolation finals, losing to Reliance, while Lander was two and done in the Oil City. That’s the best BH Basin showing at state, at least to this date, anyway.
Nine Class B teams met in a two-day district tourney at Thermopolis, a week prior to the Class A doings in Worland. Burlington surprised with two unexpected wins over Ft. Washakie in the semis and eking out a one-basket margin versus favored Shoshoni in the finals. At Casper, both teams lasted all three days. Shoshoni took consolation honors versus Chugwater while Burlington lost the third-place game to Hanna.

Southwest
Ten Class A teams and nine Class B teams met again in Green River to determine which schools would represent the SW at the state tourney in Casper. For the Class A portion of the draw, Rock Springs and Superior were tied for top seeds from the east while Star Valley was tops in the west. On one side of the bracket, Star Valley was upset in the first round by the host Wolves and Superior eked out an overtime win against Rawlins. This set up a one-point squeaker of Superior over Green River in the semis, while the other side of the bracket was a wide open path for Rock Springs to the finals. The Dragons ran out of gas in a loss against the Tigers in the championship. After the semis, Reliance and Green River won eliminator games to qualify, as well, with Reliance taking the No. 3 seed with a win over the Wolves. In Casper, the group of four had a tepid showing, compared to past years. Rock Springs finished fourth with a win over Superior, keeping the Dragons from placing. Reliance took consolation honors after losing in the first round by a mere two points. Green River just missed the consolation finals with Reliance, having been eliminated in double overtime the day before.
In Class B Diamondville—now a two-year high school—met Encampment in the play-in game for the eight-team bracket the day before the first round games began with the Tigers winning their way into the tourney. Lyman was undefeated in conference play—certainly the favorite—and took two easy decisions to reach the finals. Cokeville also made the finals, besting Hanna by three in the semis. Lyman won easily over Cokeville in the championship, earning a trip to Casper. Cokeville did not go to Casper for state, so the third place winners, Hanna, went in their stead. Lyman won the whole shooting match in the Oil City, with two easy wins to reach the finals and winning a one-point pants-wetter over undefeated Rozet in the finale. Hanna also took third place, so it was an extremely successful season for the Class B SW.

Rat Droppings***Normally the Rock Springs paper was excellent at posting Reliance and Superior scores, but that wasn’t so during the winter of 1942. Neither Superior nor Reliance had local newspapers so when the schools faced each other the score wasn’t reported, unless the Rock Springs paper did so. War news of the era often crowded out local sports news.

Rat Droppings***Encampment had part of their season cancelled—see the 1941-42 history section—in a patriotic move to save tire rubber. The Rat guesses that when no other team followed suit and when the Tigers defeated archrival—and nearby—Saratoga twice in the space of a week, that the school board reconsidered the move and allowed them to travel to Medicine Bow and to district play in Green River. It’s strictly a guess and no newspaper proof has been found to prove or disprove the theory.
