Noteworthy Events of the 1930-1931 Season
1. High School Week in Laramie—The state basketball tourney was always the highlight of the bacchanalia of events held during High School Week at the University of Wyoming. And it wasn’t just basketball that brought Wyoming youth to the Gem City. There were competitions in debate, essay, voice, music (piano and violin), reading, oratory, shorthand and typing. It was a chance for Laramie and UW—university classes were suspended for the week— to roll out the welcome mat and give Wyoming’s best and brightest a taste of college life. For the 14th iteration of the state tourney, dances were held as well as a parade, a “Grand March” of over 700 contestants indoors at Half Acre Gym—it was late March after all—in midweek.
2. Qualifying for the State Tourney? Yep—Several corners of the state had actual qualifying events. Placers in the district events were inserted into the 16-team championship Class A tourney bracket and the state champion was crowned from this group. In the largest area (in terms of teams, that is) Cheyenne, Laramie, Casper Natrona, Glenrock and defending state champs Wheatland made it through the SE district in Casper with the Indians taking first, Bulldogs second, Mustangs and Plainsmen tying for third and Sheepherders in fifth. Three teams exited the NE District tourney in Gillette to make the trip to Laramie: the hosts taking first place, Buffalo second and Sundance third. Four teams in the NW district made the cut in Lovell: Byron in first, Cowley second, Lander third and Worland fourth. The SW district had no district gathering, rather they just entered their top four teams, based on win percentage versus SW schools. In order, they were Rock Springs, Lyman, Kemmerer and Evanston.
3. Vestiges of the Old Format, however—Besides the 16 teams battling it out in the Class A bracket, other schools were encouraged to enter their teams in search of their own trophy in the Class B, Class C and Class D ranks, a continuation of the system designed by John Corbett, who was now a superintendent and coach at Glendo. Thirty-two teams took up the invitation and were grouped in size according to the population of their male student enrollment. Class B consisted of 10 teams, Class C 10 and Class D 12. The B, C and D classification winners shouldn’t be confused as state champions, however, just groupings of similar-sized schools with arbitrary divisions determined by the number of teams present. Consider their victories tournament wins, but not state tourney wins, since the true competition was battling it out in Class A.
4. Cheyenne, Champions in Class A—Cheyenne breezed through the 16-team bracket of qualifiers, polishing off Worland, Evanston, Rock Springs and, in the finale, district foe Laramie. The Laramie/Cheyenne game was pretty much expected, as the two schools split their regular-season games (one of Cheyenne’s two losses on the season), had a tight game—by two points—in the district semis, and had not been truly challenged by other Class A foes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the tourney.
5. In Class B?—Torrington and Rawlins were the largest schools, followed by Lusk, Jackson, Green River, Superior, Basin, Hanna, University Prep and Lingle. [Play for the B, C and D classification started on Monday and was true double elimination.] In the semifinals, Hanna faced Torrington while Rawlins played University Prep. The two SW schools won and squared off Friday night. Rawlins had already dropped a game to Hanna so if the Outlaws won, another game would be played on Saturday. No need for that circumstance however, as the Miners took the honors by three points.
6. In Class C?—Chugwater and Pine Bluffs were the largest schools (with 36 males) with Guernsey, Glendo, Upton, Cokeville, Manderson, Saratoga, Hillsdale and new high school Albin as other competition. Semifinal survivors were Chugwater versus Saratoga and Cokeville battling Guernsey. Chugwater and Cokeville won and played a Friday night game, with Cokeville entering the game undefeated and Chugwater sporting one loss in tourney play. The Panthers took Class C honors with a one-point win.
7. In Class D?—Big Piney, Carpenter and Ft. Laramie all had 14 male students—only one less than Class C’s Albin. Iowa Center, Encampment, Medicine Bow, Rock River, Egbert, Hawk Springs, Veteran, Baggs and McFadden followed in size, the latter two having a count of eight males. It took six days to eliminate most the teams to pare it down to the finalists. Egbert eliminated Iowa Center on Saturday morning and then faced Carpenter for all the Class D marbles. Carpenter handled Egbert in a 17-9 decision. Iowa Center, Carpenter, Ft. Laramie and Egbert all played six games at the tournament.

8. Lusk versus Harry Ukelele—in a tight game with Douglas, noted referee Harry Ukelele penalized the Lusk team for unruly behavior of fans. According to the Lusk Herald, “An unfortunate foul gave Call from Douglas a free throw, and due to remarks from the crowd he was given four extras, and he made four out of five.” The four points figured greatly in the Bearcats’ 27-22 win over the host Tigers.
A follow-up column entitled “Our Opinion of Mr. Ukelele as a ‘Fair’ Referee” went on to posit that “Mr. Ukelele gave as glaring an exhibition of ignorance and unfairness as was ever witnessed at a basketball game. The whole problem is that Ukelele is so swelled up with his own importance, and is suffering with such an aggravated ego that he thinks he must pull something spectacular so the fan will be sure to know that he is THE referee…he gave a fair example Monday night of his total unfitness…”
Mr. Ukelele responded with a letter to the Herald, “Did you make any inquiry before publishing the article? I don’t think you did. Just speak to [the offending fan] and ask him why the team was punished. It was he who caused me to call the first foul and continued so more fouls were given and as long as he kept it up I was forced to do so. My respect for Lusk High is just as much as ever.”
Lusk coach Brick Owen defended Mr. Ukelele, by the way. The Herald printed one more short op-ed on the event concluding that Ukelele “is one of the best officials in the Rocky Mountain section. He refereed a close game, to be sure, but strictly according to the rules.” [Possibly Coach Owen pointed out to the folks at the Herald that Mr. Ukelele could be refereeing the Tigers in post-season action as he had done the year before? At least that’s one explanation for the Herald’s change of heart.]
9. Powell votes for new gym—Powell fielded no team during the 1930-31 season due to the fact that there was no place to adequately play games. The vote to approve a $70,000 bond issue for a new gymnasium, junior high school, auditorium for school assemblies and an agriculture shop was voted on Jan 31. The bond issue passed by 134 votes. With the project slowed by Depression economics, it would take until the 1934-35 season before Powell would field a team in Big Horn Basin play.
10. Pitching shutouts—With low-scoring games a sign of the state of basketball at this point in hoops history, a couple of shutouts turned up during research for the era. Burlington was blanked 18-0 at Meeteetse in January. This was most likely the Huskies’ first year of hoops and the Longhorns their only opponent for the season as Burlington school officials eschewed a full slate of Big Horn Basin conference foes.
Mt. View put in a long season and bravely worked to complete its schedule of games. The Buffalos actually stood 1-1 after a 7-6 victory over visiting Reliance early in the season. It went downhill fast from there, however, as Mt. View was on the scoreless end of a 46-0 shellacking by visiting Evanston in mid-January. After losing another 7-6 decision to visiting Superior, Mt. View took a 92-5 pasting from arch nemesis Lyman. Back then, racking up 40 points in a game was a ton of scoring, while 50-plus points were achieved by only a handful of the best Wyoming teams. Ninety-two points? Unheard of. The team took two weeks off while their coach and several players were sidelined with scarlet fever in February. Their last game in February was an 81-4 drubbing by Kemmerer. In March, Mt. View hosted Lyman and managed double digits, a 42-10 loss to the Eagles, certainly an improvement. [Nothing lasts as long as a coach’s memory. Unfortunately, the Lyman coach moved away at season’s end before Mt. View could seek a measure of revenge for the two blowouts.] The Buffalos finished the season on a high note with a two-point win over Big Piney, 13-11.
11. Grievance game—Disappointed with the referee after a 16-14 loss in Medicine Bow, Saratoga coach Duke DeForest called for a “Grievance Game” to be held in a neutral site, with a neutral referee. Bow’s coach Stanley Emerson gladly agreed, probably because the Wranglers were having trouble scheduling games with foes other than Rock River, UW’s Sherwood Hall and McFadden. The two teams met in Hanna and the game went into overtime, with Saratoga eventually winning 20-17. Eleven days later, the two teams met again in Saratoga, and this time the Panthers won by eight. The two Ws for Saratoga were two-thirds of its regular-season victories.

Northeast
Twelve teams—Buffalo, Rozet, Upton, Newcastle, Sundance, Ranchester, Gillette, Hulett, Moorcroft, Midwest, Sheridan and Clearmont—gathered in Gillette for the NE district tournament. Three teams qualified for the 16-team Class A state tourney bracket slated for the last week in March. The district tourney was a true double elimination event, with the exception of the consolation portion of the tourney. If the team lost its opening game, it entered consolation play and one team of the six was crowned consolation champ with only one loss in total. (This happened to Midwest, which lost to Moorcroft then eliminated Clearmont and Ranchester for the consolation title.)
The district tourney was held over two and a half days, which probably should’ve been three days, given that the champions crowned on late Saturday night—make that Sunday morning, well after midnight—played six games on Friday and Saturday. The hosts took all the marbles in the tourney, dropping a Friday game to Buffalo, then winning three games on Saturday, including two over the Bison. Sundance was the other team that lasted until mid-Saturday before the Camels sent them packing.
The trio of NE qualifiers for the Class A tourney bracket did all right as the team from Byron figured negatively in every NE team’s tourney chances. Sundance exited the tourney on Thursday, losing its opener to Kemmerer by a single point and then to NW No. 1 seed Byron. Campbell County High School lasted until Friday, dropping its opener to Laramie, easily besting Worland on Thursday and meeting the same fate as Sundance with a loss to Byron on Friday. Buffalo dropped its opener, too, then reeled off wins over Lander and Cowley and faced Byron on Saturday for consolation honors. The Bison stayed close but couldn’t top the Eagles, losing by three.
Only one other team from the NE entered the all comers portion of the High School Week in Laramie and that was Upton. Upton was placed in the Class C division and was done by Tuesday, losing two games, the latter by two points to Manderson.

Southeast
The SE district had the most schools in the state and was divided into southern and northern divisions. In the north were schools from Douglas, Midwest (which moved to the NE later in the season), Casper Natrona, Glenrock, Glendo, Guernsey, Sunrise, Ft. Laramie, Lingle, Torrington, Lost Springs, Manville and Lusk. The southern teams were Rock River, University Prep, Egbert, Hillsdale, Burns, Pine Bluffs, Carpenter, Veteran, Hawk Springs, Chugwater, Centennial and Wheatland.
Due to the size of the district, two prior qualifying tourneys for the main SE district tourney were slated, one in Douglas for the north and one in Cheyenne for the south. As it turned out, only the Douglas event was held and three southern teams attended the SE district tourney in Casper, which were Cheyenne, Laramie and Wheatland. (Picked by acclaim and records, I’m guessing.) In Douglas, five teams qualified from the north, including Casper, Sunrise, Douglas, Lusk and Glenrock. Those eight teams met in the SE district tourney in Casper had Cheyenne taking first over Wheatland in the finals. Laramie and the hosts tied for third—there was no third-place game—and both teams qualified for the Class A state tourney bracket. Consolation champs Glenrock were also guaranteed a place in the bracket as the SE sent five teams, the NE three, the NW four and the SW four to Laramie.
Of the five teams, only defending state champion Wheatland lost its opener, and the Bulldogs were ousted the next day with a loss to Cowley. Casper Natrona and Glenrock both lost on Thursday to SW schools and left Laramie with 1-1 marks. Cheyenne and Laramie were on a collision course for the finals, winning their quarterfinal and semifinal games easily. The two rivals had defeated each other in home games during the regular season and the Indians held a 2-1 mark over the Plainsmen after narrowly defeating them at the district tourney. The finale was rather lopsided, however, as Cheyenne won by a convincing 28-17 count, its third state hoops championship.
Given the SE’s proximity to Laramie and the open invitation for all teams to attend, the SE was well represented in Class B—Lingle, Lusk, Torrington and University Prep—Class C—Albin, Chugwater, Glendo, Guernsey, Hillsdale and Pine Bluffs—as well as Class D—Carpenter, Egbert, Ft. Laramie, Hawk Springs, Iowa Center and Veteran. In Class B, Torrington and University Prep lasted the longest—until Friday—and were eliminated in the semifinals. For Class C, Chugwater was a finalist, losing to Cokeville. SE teams dominated Class D, with Ft. Laramie, Iowa Center, Veteran, Carpenter and Egbert making the final five teams. Egbert eliminated Iowa Center in an early Saturday semifinal game and later faced Carpenter in the finale, where the Coyotes won. Carpenter’s win shouldn’t be misconstrued as a state championship, however. None of the B, C or D teams had qualified for the Class A bracket.

Sixteen Big Horn Basin teams met in Lovell for the NW district tourney. The top four teams advanced to the state tourney in Laramie in two weeks. Since the BHB regular season schedule was not a complete one, seeding the 16 teams proved problematic. Odds-on favorite was Byron, which had traipsed through the season with only one loss. Manderson, Thermopolis and Cowley had also compiled excellent seasons. The semifinals had three of the above teams: Byron, Thermopolis and Cowley. Manderson was eliminated by Worland, somewhat of a surprise. Byron dispatched Worland and Cowley did likewise to Thermopolis, which set up an Eagles/Jaguars finale, won easily by Byron. Worland handled Thermopolis for third-place honors. Thermopolis then stepped aside and offered the trip to Laramie to Lander, citing the poor seeding as the reason (and probably tight Depression budgets?). Lander accepted.
In Laramie, all four NW representatives lost the opening game in the Class A bracket. By Thursday, Worland and Lander were eliminated from competition, exiting Laramie with 0-2 marks. Cowley lasted until Friday in consolation play, beating Wheatland on Thursday and dropping a two-point decision to Buffalo on Friday. Byron lasted all four days, defeated two NE teams on Thursday and Friday and then topping Buffalo by three for the consolation trophy. Byron finished the year with a nifty 20-2 mark.
Basin and Manderson were the only other NW teams to take part in the all-comers portion of the state tourney. Basin played in Class B, dropping games on Monday and Tuesday to Hanna and Lingle. Manderson lasted two days longer, losing its opener to eventual C champ Cokeville, defeating Upton and Glendo, then losing to Guernsey on Thursday.

Southwest
The only district to avoid a post-season tourney was the SW district. It was decided that four teams would qualify for the Class A bracket in Laramie based on win percentage points versus other SW teams. Rock Springs breezed through the season undefeated to secure the top spot while Lyman and Kemmerer were in second and third, respectively. Cokeville and Evanston were going to play a game to determine the fourth-place spot, being separated by .111 percentage points for fourth place, but Cokeville ceded the spot to Evanston and decided to play against similarly-sized schools in Class C at Laramie. All four Class A teams won the first day and Uinta County schools Evanston and Lyman lost on Thursday to exit Laramie with 1-1 marks. Kemmerer and Rock Springs made the semifinals and lost to Laramie and Cheyenne. There was no third-place game, so both ended their tourney stays with 2-1 records.
Five SW teams competed and did well in the Class B portion of the tourney: Green River, Hanna, Jackson, Rawlins and Superior. Jackson and Superior were eliminated—by SW teams—on Tuesday, dropping two games each. Green River lasted until Thursday, being bumped from further action by Rawlins. Rawlins and Hanna ended up in the finals and the Miners took the Class B trophy, finishing High School Week with a perfect 6-0 mark. Rawlins was second, having lost twice to Hanna during the week, ending at 4-2.
Class C had two SW teams, Cokeville and Saratoga. Both teams lasted all five days of the Class C competition. Saratoga was eliminated in the semis by Chugwater on Friday. Cokeville, which had hung Saratoga’s other tourney loss on the Panthers, made it to the finals and took Chugwater by a point, winning the Class C championship with a perfect 5-0 record.
Half of the 12 Class D teams were from the SW: Baggs, Big Piney, Encampment, McFadden, Medicine Bow and Rock River. By the end of day two, five of the teams were finished, defeated by a strong contingent of SE small schools. Exiting were Baggs, Encampment, McFadden, Medicine Bow and Rock River, all with 0-2 marks. Big Piney (1-2) lasted until Wednesday, winning its opener over McFadden and then losing to two SE teams.
