Noteworthy Events of the 1929-1930 Season
1. High School Week in Laramie—The 13th annual gathering in Laramie was a stellar mix of high school-aged students from all around the Cowboy State. Students competed in declamatory arts—debate, oratory, reading and voicing—as well as in music—piano and violin. Essay writing was also a contest as were office skills—typing and stenography. The campus was closed for the week and many high schools took some days off so the students could attend. By far the biggest event of high school week was the state basketball tournament. The tourney was open to all schools, and 54 teams vied for the state title. It was a double-elimination event, and it took 106 games and a full week to finally determine the winner.
2. Dream Format—Many is the time this scribe has left the Casper Events Center on a March Saturday night after the final games of the state tourney, wondering how the champions of the four different classes would’ve fared against one another. The 1929-30 state tournament tried to answer that question. The 54 teams were divided into four classes based on male enrollment numbers as of Feb. 1. The 14 largest schools were Class A, the next 14 were Class B, the next 13 Class C, and the 13 smallest were Class D. There would be no David vs. Goliath mismatches of past state tourneys in the opening portion of the tourney, e.g. tiniest Baggs versus largest Casper Natrona. Each classification would determine a champion, and those four teams would battle it out—in single elimination— for the title trophy.
Glen Rogers, coach of defending champion and heavily favored Wheatland, voiced his displeasure about the change in the tourney format. He claimed the Class A winner would have the toughest time of all the classes. “The best teams will eat each other’s throats and then lose in the titular round to a mediocre team that will be outstanding in one of the weaker divisions,” claimed the Bulldog coach. “Some very small school in the state may develop a good team and because the male enrollment is small, will be placed in a class where there is no hard opposition.” The toll of playing tougher games would wear down the Class A team and therefore put it at a disadvantage when it came time to play the winners of the other classes.
Coach Rogers needn’t have worried so much. His Bulldogs entered the tournament undefeated and took the Class A title, although a determined Casper Natrona did hang a loss on the Bulldogs. However, Wheatland eliminated the Mustangs with a win over Casper in the Class A finale. Lingle, one of the smallest Class B teams, took that classification’s title with a win over Green River. Lyman did likewise in Class C, topping SW foe Cokeville. For the smallest schools, it was Veteran’s purview, as the Eagles bested Manderson in the Class D finale, the third time the two schools had met during the week.
Saturday evening, Wheatland faced Lyman and Lingle faced fellow Goshen County neighbor Veteran. Wheatland and Lingle both won, the spread nine points in each game. The state tourney championship was contested on Monday morning in front of a sparse crowd, a full week after the opening round games began. Game No. 106 was won by Wheatland, although Lingle played the Bulldogs close, losing by only four points.
3. So Which Team Finished Second?—I’m not sure how to answer this one. I can see arguments for both Lingle and Casper Natrona. Lingle and Wheatland did play in the penultimate game of the tourney for the championship. The Bulldoggers played Wheatland close, much better than they did during their regular-season matchups. Casper Natrona was the only team to defeat Wheatland and lost by only a point in the Class A finals. Unfortunately, Lingle and Casper Natrona never met during the regular season. I suppose Lingle is No. 2, but Casper Natrona rates No. 2A in my book anyway.
4. Legendary Wheatland—Sportswriters of the 1940s and 1950s would often cite the 1929-30 edition of the Wheatland Bulldogs as one of the state’s finest. Immediately after winning the state tourney on Monday, Wheatland was sent to the National High School Basketball Tourney held at Chicago University. Casper Natrona was also at the prestigious event—another argument for viewing the Mustangs as the second-place team— bracketed in with 34 other teams from 26 different states. The Mustangs lost both of their games in Illinois to teams from Wisconsin and Tennessee. Wheatland had better luck, winning its first two games over teams from Virginia and North Carolina and making the quarterfinals (as they did the year before). There, the Bulldogs’ season ended, as they lost to defending (and eventual) champion Athens, Texas.
For the past 90-plus years, nary a Wyoming championship team has topped the Wheatland Bulldogs’ single season mark of 33 victories from the 1929-30 season. (I’ve run across a 35-2 record for Wheatland that year, but tend to doubt it. I think two B-squad wins over Platte County neighbor Glendo may have skewed that total.) The players, Ed McGinty, Hilton Dearinger, Sanford Dearinger, Casey Rugg, Elery Bird and Don Titus, saw most of the action and their final two weeks of the 1929-30 season had them playing 12 games in 12 days, posting a nifty 10-2 mark. Add to that a 28-game undefeated streak, and the Bulldogs approach mythic status. McGinty, Rugg and the Dearingers all played hoops at UW. A January 1944 Wyoming Eagle sports column caught up with the wartime doings of Coach Rogers’ troops, proof that the Bulldogs were still held near and dear to the hearts of Wyoming hoops fans.

8. Laramie Versus Ed McGinty—Besides the one loss at the state tourney to Casper Natrona, a different school caused trouble for Wheatland. Laramie questioned Ed McGinty’s eligibility for state tourney play at the start of the week-long event. Laramie had filed a protest claiming that the Wheatland captain and leader in scoring had been in school for nine semesters (rather than the maximum eight) and therefore not eligible to take part in the state tourney. The claim was that McGinty had attended East Denver High and Laramie High prior to his years at Wheatland, and initially the Board of Control agreed, declaring him ineligible. Folks in Platte County were up in arms and called for Wheatland to taken out of the tourney unless Ed was reinstated. “Bring ‘em home!” was the cry.
Young McGinty and Superintendent/Principal T. F. Ziegler made a Monday afternoon drive to Denver to obtain data that contradicted the claim. They returned to Laramie early Tuesday with a signed letter from the principal of Denver East saying that McGinty had been there, but only for six days. Laramie could not produce any record of McGinty actually attending school there. When the Board of Control met at 10 a.m. Tuesday, it was confronted with proof that their initial decision to bar Ed from playing was in error and totally unjust. McGinty was able to join the Bulldogs at halftime of their opener with Thermopolis, which the Bulldogs easily won.
9. Tough Trip to Sunrise—Torrington’s road game to Sunrise was tougher than expected. Taking the team in two cars to Platte County, the Trailblazers were forced to start the game with their second string as the varsity had trouble with their car. The car’s lights had failed them and the team was forced to return to Lingle for repairs. Eventually the A team made it, around 9 p.m., in time for the fourth quarter. By then, the game was well in hand for the Miners and they cruised to a 34-8 final score.
10. Not-so-dry Game—Lusk hosted Harrison, Nebraska, in its new high school gym and won over the Warriors 22-18. Prohibition was still the law in the U.S., but apparently some spectators operated under different authority. The scribe from the Lusk Herald describes the scene: “Some of the Harrison rooters evidently brought along an ample supply of Nebraska hootch and some of them were singing in high G. It was necessary for the referee to eject one of the noisier of the lot before the game could proceed.”
11. Coal Stove Woes—Upton’s games—both girls and boys—at Rozet were delayed by visibility. A smoky coal stove, used to heat the playing area, had clouded up the premises. Eventually order and sightlines were restored and play resumed. Upton’s girls and Rozet’s boys were the winners that brisk February evening.
12. Lusk’s New School—I was able to enjoy(?) Lusk’s new gym built and opened in January of 1930, albeit a few years after that. My Lusk Middle School Lady Tigers practiced in it for several years beginning with this rookie coach in 1979. It was not quite three quarters’ size, with benches along the sidelines and an upper balcony with three rows of seating that covered all but the stage area on the east end. The basket in front of the stage—which could be raised for performances— would sway after missed shots. The gym had two temperatures: too cold and too hot. The west basket was bolted to the balcony and at least one middle school kid broke an arm jumping from the balcony through the hoop. “I wanted to see what it felt like to be a basketball,” was his explanation. We played our actual games across town in the NCHS gym (the state’s ‘other’ NCHS)—a full-sized court—meaning we had no home court advantage. We weren’t used to its size or balcony-less shooting background. I do wish I would’ve taken the scoreboard out of it, which had an old-timey clock with moving hands and curlicue numbers. Other than that, I wasn’t sad to see it razed in 1983.

Northeast
Twelve NE teams met in Gillette for the regional tournament. The favorites heading into the event were probably Buffalo and maybe Moorcroft as they sported the most wins versus NE competition. The double-elimination event began Friday and wasn’t resolved until the wee hours of Sunday morning. The final three teams were Buffalo, Sheridan and Midwest. Sheridan handed Midwest its first tourney loss and then one-loss Buffalo did the same to Sheridan. Buffalo then lost by two points to Midwest, which set up the finale between Midwest and Sheridan. The opening tip for the championship was tossed shortly after midnight and the Oilers won by six over the Broncs. It was the fourth game of the day for both teams.
The NE sent 50% of its 12 NE tourney teams to the state tourney in Laramie. Campbell County, Midwest and Sheridan played in the Class A bracket. Buffalo and Sundance were Class B entries while Moorcroft competed as a Class C entity. In Class A, Gillette’s tourney was the shortest as it was done by Tuesday, exiting with an 0-2 mark. Midwest and Sheridan lasted a day longer, as both teams posted wins on Tuesday and left with 1-2 records. Moorcroft and Sundance did the same. Both squads lost their opener, won on Tuesday and were eliminated on Wednesday. Buffalo was the most successful of the NE crews, winning Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday proved to be problematic as the Thundering Herd lost twice, first to Green River and then to Glenrock. Still, Buffalo’s 3-2 mark was the NE’s best state tourney effort.

Southeast
The SE district was loaded for bear during the 1929-30 hoops season. Defending state champion Wheatland reeled off 28 straight victories, dropped a game in the Class A portion of the state tourney, avenged that loss the next day and repeated as state champs. Their final two wins in Laramie were over Class C champion Lyman and Class B champion Lingle. The Bulldogs, along with Casper Natrona, were invited to attend the National High School tourney in Chicago where the Platte County boys made the quarterfinals, exiting the Land of Lincoln with a 2-1 mark. (Natrona had a less successful Illinois stay, losing two games.)
The SE held two tournaments but neither was a full-fledged battle royale of all the best teams. The first one was held in Douglas in late February and featured mostly teams from the northern part of the region: Casper Natrona, Glenrock, Douglas, Manville, Lusk, Glendo, Lingle, Chugwater and Guernsey. Cheyenne Central and University Prep also joined the gathering as the two southernmost teams. The two largest schools made the finals with Cheyenne winning by five over Casper. Torrington hosted the other tourney the first week of March. Lusk and Lingle squared off in the finals of that event, which featured many of the smaller schools of the district like Ft. Laramie, Guernsey, Sunrise, Iowa Center, LaGrange and Veteran. Lusk won the championship by 10 over Lingle. It’s interesting to note that powerhouse Wheatland was not a part of either event, possibly unappreciated, definitely uninvited.
Most of the SE participated at the state tourney gathering in Laramie. Only winless Hawk Springs and Manville opted out of the festivities.
At the state tourney, six SE teams entered the largest classification and along with Wheatland and Natrona’s fine showing, host Laramie took five days to be eliminated, Central and Douglas four days and Torrington three. By contrast, Campbell County, Lander, Rawlins and Thermopolis were bounced from tourney play after two days. Kemmerer, Midwest and Sheridan lasted three days and outlier Rock Springs went five days. The power portion of the state, at least for larger schools, rested in the SE.
Class B showed a bit more balance as quarterfinalists represented the SE—Glenrock and Lingle; SW—Green River; and NE—Buffalo. The Herders sent Buffalo packing and on the next day, Glenrock was eliminated by Lingle. In the Class B final game, Lingle easily bested Green River for the title. Saturday, Lingle defeated Class D champ/Goshen County neighbor Veteran and then lost to Wheatland on Monday, a week after the state tourney began.
The only state champion from a different quadrant of Wyoming was Lyman. Quarterfinalists in Class C were the Eagles and fellow SW foe Cokeville, NW’s Cowley and Ft. Laramie from the SE. The Pioneers were done by Thursday, the Jaguars on Friday, and it took a Friday and Saturday double-header for Lyman to finally best Cokeville for all the Class C marbles. Lyman drew tough-as-nails Wheatland on Saturday night and lost by nine. Ft. Laramie was the toughest SE team in Class C, lasting until late Wednesday.
Veteran finished the triptych of SE state championships at the Class D level of smallest schools. From the original 13 teams in the classification, NW representative Manderson battled with the Eagles, Iowa Center, and Carpenter as quarterfinalists. Iowa Center was eliminated first, followed by Carpenter. Manderson and Veteran had to play two games back-to-back to determine the Class D winner, and Veteran answered the final bell for the trophy. The Eagles then lost to next-door neighbor Lingle to end their tourney run.

Northwest
Cowley won the regular-season title of the Big Horn Basin, and the Jaguars were the favorites heading into the NW regional tourney in Lovell. Fourteen teams were signed up for the event, and first-round losers were fielded into a consolation bracket, ineligible for the tourney title. Greybull pulled off the first shocker, topping Cowley by nine. Deaver, Byron, Cody, Thermopolis, Riverton and the hosts also qualified for the title bracket on day one. Semifinalists from Friday’s play were Thermopolis versus Byron as well as Greybull against Lovell. Thermopolis won easily over Byron while Greybull topped the hosts by one. That evening, Thermopolis won it all by five points over Greybull. Cowley atoned for its opening-round loss with a win over Manderson to cop consolation honors.
Deaver, Hyattville, Riverton, St. Michael’s, Ten Sleep and Worland all skipped the state tourney. (Burlington and Meeteetse were not 9-12 high schools at the time and therefore not invited, at least to the hoops portion of High School Week.) Riverton’s absence is probably the most curious as the Wolverines had around a .500 mark against area teams. Perhaps the two largest Fremont County schools had a coin flip deal. The winner got the trip to Laramie (Lander) while the loser played in the regional tourney at Lovell (Riverton).
Nine teams made the long trip to Laramie for the state tourney: In Class A, Lander and Thermopolis, for Class B Basin, Cody, Greybull and Lovell, in Class C Byron and Cowley and Class D Manderson. Five teams were two and done: Lander, Thermopolis, Cody, Greybull and Lovell. Basin won its opener but lost its next two games, finishing with a 1-2 record. Byron was finished by Thursday, leaving with a 2-2 mark, and Cowley was done early Friday, posting a solid 4-2 W/L showing. Manderson did the best of all the NW teams, dropping both its games to eventual champion Veteran (but also defeating the Eagles once, as well) with the final loss occurring in the Class D finale, a nifty second-place finish.

Southwest
The SW had no season-ending tourney, rather just declared the area’s champion by won/loss percentage versus SW opponents. That honor went to Rock Springs—Coach Okie Blanchard’s first year there—which lost only two SW games (as did Kemmerer and Hanna) but played more total games than any other school to bump the percentage points a touch higher.
Most all of the SW teams participated in the state tourney, even geographically isolated spots like Jackson and Big Piney. Only winless Mt. View opted out of the trip to the Gem City.
At Laramie, Kemmerer, Rawlins and Rock Springs competed in the large-school pool of 14. Rawlins was first to exit on Tuesday, dropping games to Kemmerer and Sheridan. Kemmerer lasted a day longer, playing eventual champion Wheatland close and exiting with a loss to Cheyenne. Class B teams from the SW were Evanston, Green River, Hanna and Jackson. Jackson was eliminated on Tuesday with two straight losses. Evanston and Hanna lasted until Wednesday, leaving the tourney with 1-2 marks. Green River had success all week long, lasting until the Class B finale with Lingle. The Wolves dropped their second game in as many days to the Bulldoggers and finished as Class B runners-up.
For Class C, Cokeville, Lyman and Superior represented the SW. Superior lost two straight games, two and done. Lyman and Cokeville battled all week long and the Uinta County team eventually prevailed over the Lincoln County one, as the two teams needed three games against each other to decide the Class C championship. By virtue of finishing first, Lyman drew Class A champ Wheatland on Saturday’s semifinal and lost by nine to the Bulldogs. In Class D, the SW loaded the small-school ranks with seven teams: Baggs, Big Piney, McFadden, Medicine Bow, Reliance, Rock River and Saratoga. Big Piney, Medicine Bow and Reliance all were finished by Tuesday, losing both of their games. Baggs, Rock River and McFadden all lasted until Wednesday, posting 1-2 records. Saratoga was the best of the lot, lasting until Thursday and breaking even in Laramie with a 2-2 result.

Rat Droppings***During the latter part of January into the first two weekends of February, Cokeville played no games. I’m not sure what the deal was—I’ve no access to the Cokeville Register (which was sporadically publishing during that span of time)—but my guess is an illness like scarlet fever closed the school for a few weeks. Lyman claimed the 2/8 game as a forfeit but Rock Springs and Green River did no such thing. I’m tending to side with the larger schools on this one, just counting them as cancelled games.

Rat Droppings***Star Valley High School competed within the league formed of various M.I.A. (Mutual Improvement Associations) teams from districts around Lincoln County/Star Valley. The high schoolers did OK against mostly older competition, sporting a 3-2 mark at the end of January with two games left to play in February. Unlike during their football season, Star Valley played no high school opposition.

Rat Droppings***A new school was dedicated in the autumn of 1929 and hopes were high that Encampment would become a 9-12 high school during the 1930-31 school year. In 1931, parts of the old school were used to construct a gymnasium suitable for basketball games.
